Wits awareness was a slow thing to resurface, like molasses it was vicious and meandering. He felt like he was waking up from an assortment of endless dreams, filled with detailed scenes of seeds taking root, animals giving birth to cubs, and eggs hatching into larvae.
His mind struggled to juggle the concepts, but he was in no rush to decipher life’s mysteries at the moment.
The first thing he truly noticed was how comfortable he felt, the warmth radiating through his body and the lack of pain had his soul sighing in relief. He lay there curled up for a while thinking of nothing, being the most comfortable he’s ever been. Basking in the bliss and sense of contentment that came along with it.
He lay there in the same position for what had to be years, drifting in and out of consciousness. Thoughts were so slippery, they slid through his waking mind too fast for him to grasp onto. With each passing day, he could feel them slowing down just enough for him to almost have a coherent thought.
Eventually, one gear in Wits' head rotated just enough to get a few others in motion along with it. His first thought was of a vulnerable sprout peeking out of the dirt and stretching in the sun for the first time. It made his body twitch, and begin to feel uncomfortable in the knee-to-chest position that felt perfectly fine moments before.
He tried to stretch but he could barely summon the strength. His body twitched and adjusted, trying to make itself more comfortable, only to succeed in tiring himself out. Drifting off to sleep had him dreaming of an insect trapped in an egg struggling to tear free.
After a few more attempts whenever he was conscious enough, Wit felt like he had built up some actual strength for a decent stretch. He uncurled himself and stretched out his arms and legs, only for his hands and feet to be met by a barrier. The contact fully woke him up, and all the gears in his mind began to turn with renewed energy.
His eyes snapped open, only to be met by a cloudy liquid and a veiny material holding it all in. Seeing the liquid he involuntarily held his breath. He panicked while grabbing the veiny walls and looking for a way out. He pushed against the surprisingly pliable membrane and watched it tear open.
The walls collapsed around him with a wet splash, forcing Wit out onto the open floor in a tangle of limbs shivering in the goo puddle and gasping for air. The thought of a weak newborn kitten covered in birth gunk entered his mind. He shook his head trying to clear out the fuzziness. Wet hair splashed the surroundings and a heavy appendage dragged behind his head.
He looked back and saw what resembled a large dusky black centipede with a translucent purplish underbelly with matching legs tucked underneath, the whole thing was attached to the back of his head. It was flattish and had chitinous linked segments over the top of the meaty body.
It was as long as his body and ended with two leg feelers that curled up in a spiral. Wit couldn’t stop staring at it, and when he twitched it; he was delighted to see it move.
Looking up, he noticed that he was still in some sort of enclosure. Around him was a white dome with no real special features other than the dim light it gave off. The only things of notice inside the dome were an obelisk and a mirror.
Wit tried to stand, only to stumble and shake onto his new digitigrade feet covered in dark bark. It felt like he was walking on his tiptoes, but also not. Weird he thought, trying to get used to these new alien but seemingly natural feelings.
Taking his first step had him throwing his arms out trying to catch his balance. That's when he noticed a long, black short furred tail swishing behind him keeping him steady. He couldn't help but smile as he tried to take control of the thickly muscled tail and actively use it to assist his janky walk.
He slowly made his way over to the mirror one stumble at a time to get a good look at his reborn self. For a long moment, his brain tried to comprehend that the alien in the reflection was in fact himself. He did a few twists and turns taking it all in and noting all the changes compared to his human form. It looked almost exactly like the hologram copy.
His hair was a loose curly dark-green leafy mess that fringed his face and fell down to his shoulders, with large triangle feline ears poking out of the tangled mess. Wit moved his ears around and was surprised at the range of movement they had. His hair also entangled itself with the dark chitinous head-tail’s base, making it look like a unique kind of ponytail.
His skin, which didn’t really look like skin anymore, resembled alabaster stone but took on a greenish undertone with a planty fibrous texture with stem lines slightly raised here and there; reminding Wit of leaves.
Touching his face he traced the smooth stem line underneath his eye. His face looked relatively the same structure-wise, which made Wit happy since he could still see a little bit of his old self in the odd mix.
The leafy skin only took up his head, front torso, and his privates, leaving his arms and legs, and back covered in sleek black fur.
Dark bark grew around his neck up to the base of his skull where the tail's insertion point was, over his hands and feet, and his elbows and knees. They didn’t feel restrictive in the least and tapping them showed high resistance. Twisting around revealed that the bark also went down his spine and wrapped around the base of his tail.
Out of everything though his eyes are what had him truly mesmerized. They were bigger with a majority of vibrant emerald green laced with lines of citrine and amethyst fractals branching off his dilated pupils. He watched as those same pupils narrowed from disks to slits and it made him take a step back from his reflection.
Smiling, he saw the top and bottom four seemingly human teeth in the front; while throughout the back laid sharp canines and molars. His smile seemed longer like his mouth took up more of his face. It was somewhat unsettling.
In all honesty, Wit looked monstrous, dangerous, wild, and like something he would run from if it were moving in his direction. He growled and snapped his teeth. Tensing his new and improved muscles he felt the thorn-claws make their way out of their slits in the bark over his fingers. Adding to the menacing aura of the ten-year-old child.
“Looking good.” He croaked out, feeling his throat constrict from his first words in who knew how long.
Stretching out like a cat, he felt his spine pop in relief. Sending a tingle throughout his whole body that energized him and brought his awareness fully online. He made it, he survived his rebirth. Now is when his life truly begins.
Taking his attention from his reflection he looked at the obelisk. It was made of the same silver-white metal of the entry door with the crystal motif, ‘Platinum’ he thought. Walking over to it he noticed a hole that was shoulder height. As soon as Wit stood in front of the obelisk a familiar voice rang out.
“Congratulations young Witan on your complete metamorphosis. This is a prerecorded message so withhold any questions you may have… Today is the day the first Homo’Omnisapien has been born, take pride in knowing that the odds were not in your favor in many ways. You’ve survived the impossible and it is my hope that you can continue to fulfill your dreams of making the impossible possible.
Now to inform you, while you were going through your rebirth process many things have changed. You have been in gestation for 34 years. In that time Babel has fallen, but do not be sad for it has fulfilled its purpose in keeping human consciousness alive. There is no longer a true homosapien to be found on earth but their minds still ponder and tick in their new forms such as yours.
Unauthorized use of content: if you find this story on Amazon, report the violation.
Due to your long gestation period, I’ve had to relocate your birthing pod down to the lowest level near the power generator in order for your sustained survival. I do not know if any of this will survive the fall but I’ve done my best to give you an estimated fifty years of security so that you may finish your transformation. I've also taken the liberty to make something for you specifically as a reward for surviving the impossible. If you would please insert your hand in the hole. I will provide you with a device that will certainly help you along your journey.”
There was a pause as Rubix’s recorded voice waited for Wit to follow the instruction. Not wasting any more time he put his right hand up to the elbow into the hole. I can't believe it’s been thirty-four years. How many opportunities have I missed? Wit thought worriedly.
There was a hiss and sudden jolt of pain around his wrist, that had Wit yanking his hand out of the hole with a yelp.
“Ow! What the flux!?” He exclaimed, cradling his damaged arm.
Looking down at his wrist showed a matte-black metal watch wrapped around his wrist. With a large rimmed circle face, filled with what Wit instantly recognized as black pixels from the sandbox fluctuating like a pool's surface.
The sleek but somewhat bulky watch covered the majority of his wrist, with subtle lines of emerald, amethyst, and citrine crystals creating cool circuit patterns throughout the metal. It still hurt like a smashed pinky toe, but Wit had to admit the cool factor was very high. The small hole closed and Rubix’s recording continued.
“The device around your arm is called the ‘Omnitrix’. I will leave you to explore its functions on your own time. The metal is adaptive, self-cleaning, and will adjust with you over time. The crystals are processed to be practically indestructible and adds in my opinion a very nice aesthetic. You are the only one capable of wearing this specific device as it's genetically locked to your dna.
Though each child has received something similar, your Omnitrix is truly special compared to their simple Biotrix’s, it's one of a kind. There are many secrets and capabilities inside, that only you are worthy of utilizing. Also in the compartment below you will find underwear that will ease any embarrassment you may be feeling at the moment. Now I wish you luck in your new life, young Witan. Lightspeed ahead.”
Wit looked at the Omnitrix with a whole new light. But before he dived into its mysteries he pulled the little lever at the bottom of the obelisk pulling out a draw. In there lay a pair of dark gray boxer briefs with a hole in the rear for his tail, which made Wit smile. There was also a little white rubix logo at the bottom which he thought was a nice touch.
Dawning them made everything feel more real in a sense, even better than the Omnitrix, the first undies of freedom.
Looking at the Obelisk, Wit did a polite bow before saying. “Thank you for everything Grand Rubix, especially for the underwear. Rest well in knowing that your mission was achieved. You made the Impossible, Possible… Lightspeed ahead.”
Looking around the dome again, Wit saw an exit door on the other side. He also noticed that the center where he essentially hatched minutes prior had at one point turned into a bed of soft dark soil. Ringed around the bed was a light sending out positively warm comfortable ultra violet rays.
Feeling exhausted suddenly had him stumbling over and face-planting in the warm rich soil. Digging his hands and toes into the dirt was relaxing and felt like the best hug ever as the dirt surrounded him. Before he knew it the soul-enriching light that fed and saturated his body had him drifting off to sleep.
What's a few more hours to thirty-four years. Wit thought before letting oblivion take him.
⚡️
Waking up had Wit turning over and stretching, digging furrows in the soil with his heels and large chitinous tail. Taking a breath of fresh air and sensing the endless options ahead, invigorated him. He shot up into a criss-cross sitting position, waving both of his tails behind him lazily, and inspected the Omnitrix.
“Adds a nice aesthetic, you sure weren’t kidding GR,” Wit whispered, twisting his arm, getting a good look at what apparently is now a permanent part of it. Hmm, should I have put my left hand in?
Guiding his focus to the circle-rimmed pool of pixels. He noticed little engraved pictograms around the rim. Getting the picture, he twisted the rim around and the pixels floated into the air creating a three-dimensional map of his current enclosure. Twisting it again had the sandy pixels shifting into a 3D miniature model of himself with a list of some kind.

“Woah.” Clicking the plus signs next to what the Omnitrix called organix highlighted where each trait appeared in or around his body. Showing an x-ray rendition of his physiology bones muscles and all, it was difficult to truly grasp what it all meant, he barely dabbled in biology during his studies. Of all the times to miss the Guides and their endless database. Wit thought with a dry chuckle
Switching to another pictogram,Wit got lost in all of the different applications of his new Omnitrix.
It seemed to be the perfect tool, there were a total of six applications. {Map} for navigation, {Status} for live body diagnostics and organix, {Memo} for notes and research. {Schematic} for creating in the mini-sandbox, {Code} for software development and hacking, and lastly an {A.I.} assistant.
Wit didn’t know what to think, this was the best gift he's ever gotten. It was so useful he drew a blank on what to even use it for. He did know one thing though, the a.i. assistant had him the most curious.
Rotating back to it, had all of the pixels floating above the watch face, hollowing the watch out in the process. There was an ‘initiate’ floating in a small box next to it. Clicking it opened a bar with a blinking line requesting Wit input a name.
Ruminating on a few names took longer than he thought, but he decided his new assistant's name would be ‘Poindexter’. After typing it in on the mini-touchpad keyboard, the pixels fell back into the watch, and all the crystal lines lit up briefly before dimming back to normal.
“Poindexter?” Wit asked curiously.
“Anything I can do for you Witan?” Poindexter replied with a robotic analog voice. The watch face fluctuated along with his pitch.
“First of all, call me Wit, I don't want you to sound like a Guide. Second, what are you capable of exactly?” Wit asked excitedly, he was ecstatic to have something to talk to.
“I can assist you with anything relating to the Omnitrix, Wit. The more you use it, the more I can do. By helping you understand your surroundings, your body, and your mind; your goals and your ambitions will be assisted by me. I'm your assistant in all ways.” Poindexter replied
“Mathematical,” Wit whispered in awe, he just got a right-hand man.
“Alright, wow. Okay, um stay on standby for now.” Wit put the watch down at Poindexter’s quick “affirmative”.
After assessing his situation and enjoying the imitated sunlight, he panned his head around the room. He had to get out of this place, find some other people, and get the lay of the land. He stood up and headed to the exit door. Upon reaching the door, it shuttered open like a camera lens.
