11th Entry - Expedition

11th Entry - Expedition

It is 8 in the morning. Everybody is already here at the teleporter. I look at Jack and ask him if he is ready. He gives me a confident nod. Since I am worried that the teleporter would separate us, I suggest that everyone go in simultaneously. To my surprise, they all follow my lead. We grab each other’s backpacks and perform a short countdown before running into the circle. Same as before: a beam of light appears and teleports us instantly. We are inside the second floor’s forest but at a different point from the last time I appeared. The others manifest their shocks, “what the hell” says Ashley.

After a few minutes of admiration, Derek takes the lead and decides the direction we should take. We walk a few minutes. The vegetation prevents us from seeing far. Jack chooses to climb up a tree. He notices a black structure on top of a hill a few kilometers away. We head to the point. It’s been a few hours, and nothing attacked us. The group starts to question my wolf claims, and I begin to think that my last visit was unlucky. We stop to eat our lunch. After a short digestive pause, we continue our journey to the mysterious hill. We arrive at a small clearing, and I notice something at its center; it’s a wolf eating what appears to be a dead animal.

I immediately sign the other to stop. But at the worst moment, one member of the Bureau that was too far behind asks loudly: “do you see something?” The beast notices us, and it immediately starts to howl. I realize that it is calling for help. I advance toward it, holding my ax; I must kill the beast before it’s too late. My arms are shaking, and the wolf is barking and growling at me. That vision reminds my body of what happened last time. I attack the thing with all my might and manage to hit it on the side. It screams in pain but stays on its feet.

I step back to avoid getting bitten, but my ax stays stuck on the beast. Before it gets the chance to do anything, Jack emerges from behind me and hits the beast with a second blow. This time the beast dies on the spot. I thank Jack and retrieve my ax. Ashley joins us, holding the crossbow: “I was ready to hit it,” she says.

I shout at the other Bureau members that stayed far behind: “We should leave, now!” But it is too late; I observe a dark mass jumping out of the woods. It bites the throat of Derek, who didn’t see it coming. The guy disappears with a burst of light. I look back and see another wolf coming; I warn Jack, but the beast takes him down. I rush with my ax and slam it into the beast’s skull. Unfortunately, Jack is already disappearing, leaving some small luminous powder behind. I then turn again to see something worse; the Black Knight has appeared and shoved his spear into one of the Bureau members’ chests. The other member is getting mauled by two wolves. Watching the scene paralyzes Ashley. I quickly judge the situation to be hopeless and grab her hand: “Let’s go.”

She follows me without question, and we both run through the wood as fast as possible. Seconds later, one of the wolves catches up. Just before it reaches me, I stop and perform a swing. The beast, while jumping, takes the ax right into its face. It crashes on the ground, not giving a sign of life. I go back to running and follow Ashley. When I finally reach her, she stops suddenly. Unable to slow, I push her, and we both roll into a very steep slope. I let go of my ax and hit my head to a three.

When I come back to my senses, Ashley is in front of me, crawling away from the fourth wolf. I notice the crossbow that remained attached to her side. As a last survival effort, I pass my arms around her, grab the weapon, and shoot. The beast falls dead in front of us. I pull her up, and we quickly leave the scene. No other wolf is following us, and we manage to flee away from the Black Knight.
