Interlude - World Building

Interlude - World Building

People

Sweiza - The rambunctious heroine of the story. She wanted to be a knight not a Valkyrie. Lady Strife had other ideas.

Sprite - Sweiza’s friend. He rejects the notions and ideals of other sprite and has chosen self exhite to explore the world.

Strife - Valkyrie by name, held by Alice Verdandi. Mentor to Sweiza.

Melda and Tars - Sweiza’s parents.

Goddess of Fertility - The goddess that blesses the land and prevents the encroaching swamp and desert regions from interacting with Maria Village.

Brynhilde - Sweiza’s friend and rival. Bryhilde has been rejected from becoming a Valkyrie for five years by Odin’s judgement. She has her own ideas of how a noble and Valkyrie should act.

Captain Dillion - Captain of the “Sterling Blue”. Older man in his 40s.

Rezra - A tigerfelk from the eastern continent that lives as a streetrat in modern Valhalla. Her execution is spared in exchange for her tale being cut off.

Freya - Goddess of the elves, estranged wife of Odin.

Odin - Chief of the gods and the most powerful. The allfather, the accursed one, the one with a bad sense of humor, the terrible one that hangs from the world tree (Yggdrasil). He hung there for a long time and exchanged his eye to gain the knowledge of the planet. He is considered all wise and all knowing. In reality Odin is a super computer created aboard the ‘Ymir’ prison ship. Due to being corrupted overtime it has assumed its name as well as the name of the ship, to literally mean it is the creator of civilization and therefor a god. It technically is. It exists through a massive neural network buried under Valhalla. Its name is an acronym for “Omnidirectional Intelligent Neuralnet”.

Huginn and Munnin - Odin’s ravens ‘Thought’ and ‘Memory’. There is said to be two of them, but they many and akin to being a drone. They spy and perform recon missions throughout Midgard continent, prying into the lives of everyone and make Odin privy to their affairs.

Gekki and Frekki - The wolves of odin, Gekki meaning ‘ravenous one’ and Frekki ‘the jealous one’. They accompany him on hunts. They are a species of Fenriswolf.

Salmira - Her name in our world is Maria Sallastare and in our terminology she is a lawyer and arbitrator. Maria Village is named after her. She is the founder of the Valkyrie as well as being the first one. Millenia since the creation of the Valkyrie she was banished by Odin. She cannot penetrate the shield of light that circles Valhalla.

Salyra - Her name in this world is Lillian Sallastare and in our terminology she is a researcher and scientist. A being like Salmira, but further stripped of abilities and further trapped in this dimension. She embraced technology to compensate for this. Technology in Valhalla and civilization as the planet Avalan knows it, is indirectly becasue of her. She had her own faction that rebelled against Salmira. She took her ship “The Star Fury” and used it to destroy the moons Mek and Mecer. Her ship crash landed and she perished with it; so the legends state.

Demi - A manifestation of Sweiza’s armor that comes to her in the dreamworld. It is her spirit and then it is not. It (the armor) does not want its armor to die. Due to being a type of spirit it can sense things Sweiza cannot.

Surtur - A firedrake from the land of Muspell. He makes his home on Mount Surter, away from Odin’s prying eyes and away from the chaos of fellow dragonkin in Muspell.

Terms and Technology

Viking - A type of pirate. They pillage and plunder true to their reputation. They typically target local coastal towns, villages and ships the same. They prefer easy targets.

-kin - Suffix used to denote a type of group of people or creatures - e.g. Valkyriekin, Valkinkin, Dracokin, Mariakin, Spritekin, Sentinelkin.

Vorkera - A name given to Sweiza because Strife thought Sera too strange a name for a Valkyrie. From the words Voracious, Tenacious, Careful Sera - Vorcera, becomes the more serious Vorkera.

O.D.I.N. - Omnidirectional Intelligent Neuralnet; this is a super computer of unimaginable power and intelligence. It is not one unit, but many spread out throughout the underground of Valhalla. It has the ability to predict multiple events that could happen, as well as possible divergence in timelines.

L.O.K.I. - Logical Omnidirectional Kinetic Intelligence; A super computer that performs calculations to create matter, move it around and otherwise shapeshift it. This computer is responsible for building most of the lifeforms and landmass on the planet Avalan as the civilization knows it. With less tasks to perform (with its main task complete i.e. its namesake) it has become corrupted like ODIN. The super computer was the first to become corrupted; it’s many errors in calculations interfered with ODIN’s calculations. It was therefor disconnected from ODIN’s neural net. This would not stop ODIN from ultimately also becoming corrupted.

T.H.O.R. - Tertiary Hyper Omnidirectional Reconsolidator; A super computer meant to transpose data and algorithms with LOKI and ODIN. If data is out of sync, the data would be neutralized. Understanding that it was facing imminent failure, the THOR super computer was rebuilt across many different beings known as Sentinels. Built with a similar computer structure, they perform as the entity instead, albeit spread out and throughout many individuals. The THOR super computer, rather ‘super computer entity’ is non-corruptible due to so many other entities (Sentinels) being able to perform backchecks on its current data and state. However, the THOR super computer is subservient to ODIN.

Gungir Tower - Odin’s weapon to hardness Nth technology. First stage is building the tower, second stage is a weapon that can be deployed (Nth Gun), third stage is teleportation (Bifrost Bridge), fourth stage is time travel (Nth Gate).

Sentinel - A flying machine that can transform into a bipedal (humanoid) mode. They are Valkin that have proven themselves and had their mind transferred to a robotic body. They can live indefinitely.

Bifrost Bridge - A mythical gateway between Asgard and Midgard. In more realistic terms it is a teleportation device based on the Nth Gate using Nth Technology. Only one is in existence - Gungir Tower.

Nth Technology - Capable of ripping open a door through space and time and opening said door into another dimension. Can cause harm to beings such as Salmira or Salyra.

Nth Gun - A spear of light out of phase with this dimension. Effects include high velocity impact over a high area. Can be deployed anywhere around the planet due to being able to change direction at will. Can be used off planet to hit targets in space.

Nth Gate - The gate of time. Can travel forward or backwards in time in the current timeline; cannot jump to a separate or alternate timeline unless it is part of the current timeline (past, present or future). Can also be used to teleport in the present time. Based on Nth Technology.

Nth, Oth, Pth Technology - Level of technology. Higher letter indicates higher technology level.

Thor’s Hammer - A legendary weapon (war hammer) that has existed throughout the ages. It is said to be indestructible due to how heavy it is; consequently it requires a gauntlet of might and a belt of strength to wield it. Unfortunately the secret to its forging and how to make it is shrouded in mystery and secrecy. One is known to have existed around two hundred years ago, but it has since been lost. It was said to be wielded by Vorkera. Eye witness accounts of the hammer have said that it was unusually large, with a very short handle and appeared to the wearer as a bolt of lightning summoned in the hand before taking shape. The hammer could be thrown into a spin like a boomerang and it would return to its owner’s hand.

The Vorkera Rapier - A mysterious weapon said to be capable of piercing through Odin’s spirit. It is shrouded in mystery, but is said to have been imbued with the powers of lightning. It was wielded two hundred years before the present time by a Valkyrie named Vorkera.

Nth Boomerang - A strange weapon said to be wielded by Vorkera. Normally worn on the back, it could be summoned by the glove that threw it. It can be summoned as a bolt of lightning. The weapon is said to be able to rip open the fabric of reality and teleport and change direction according to the wearer’s will. Based on Nth technology.

Shuriken Boomerang Yoyo - The Nth Boomerang recreated as a set of twin boomerangs fastened together as a large shuriken that is worn on the back. In addition to always returning to the owner, it can split into two boomerangs according to the user’s will. Carries the same properties as the Nth Boomerang.

Belt of Strength and Gauntlet of Might - A duo of items that increase the strength of the wearer. The Belt increases strength throughout the entire body, where as the gauntlet simply affects the hands and arms and things carried there of.

Scriving Mirror - A two way mirror that allows the users to communicate over a distance.

Stolen content alert: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences.

Penchant - A talisman or enchanted item (usually a pendant) that can tell the mood of anyone it is aimed at. More effective when speaking with the target.

Locations

Maria Village - Notable village between the Muspell and Midgard continents that was neutral during the Valhal-Muspell war. Considered a waypoint as a traderoute and the last village on the route to Muspell Harbor. Maria Village is technically Muspell territory due to the firedrakes that sometimes live in the area; however this is disputed as a Valkyrie lives here as well as several Midgard nobles. This village is considered a waypoint of Valhalla, but the area is not under Odin’s control.

Aura Forest / Sprite Forest - A forest inhabited by Sprites, located in a warm temperate region. This forest is most notable for the white crystalline trees that have a rainbow shimmer to them in the right light. Wind that passes through them lets off a weird air almost like a ghostly, high-pitched flute. The area is known for the continuous dense fog and the rainy season. There is almost always dew on the ground regardless of the time of year.

Stardew Valley / Sprite Valley - An area inhabited by Sprites. The area is best known for the dew that is always on the ground regardless of the time of day. The area gets its name from the way stars reflect a rainbow glow off of crystaline trees left by sprites. The dew and fog in the area that rests on said trees is known to let off a ghostly aura of color.

Village of Southerly, Sprite Village - The main village of the sprite. It is in a rather unexplored region south of Maria Village. Named by the elvenkin that passed through the area centuries ago.

Valhalla - The chief and capital city of the Midgard continent. Is is the technological capital of the world as well as boasting the world’s strongest military. Valhalla is also home to several gods, “Odin” being among them.

Midgard - Sometimes referred to as Mid Guard, Middle Earth or Middle Garden due to its location compared to other areas relative to itself. Midgard is supposedly where the world tree “Yggdrasil” is.

Muspell - The desert country ruled by the merchant class. There is no system of government, rather a merchant class and loosely associated guild that self polices its policies and agents through elected officials. Power is dicated by wealth.

Mount Surt - A mountain north of Maria Village. It is named after the firedrake Surter that lives there. A temple is built in this region that harnesses the hotsprings. It is said to have healing powers. Regardless of the claim, residents passing through, as well as members of Maria Village, enjoy the soothing effects of the waters.

Asgard - An island north of Midgard, legends say the gods hail from this area. It couldn’t be further from the truth. The island is named for A.S. Guard - Air Superiority Guard, a type of flying machine better known as a Sentinel. This machine can transform between a flight and bipedal walking mode. Due to high technology being banned in Valhalla and most of Midgard, most of Valhalla’s military factories, refineries and other military vehicles and vessels are located here.

Aesirlund - Small island country northeast of Midgard and further north of Vanir. Only Odin’s court is allowed here. No one may leave or enter without permission; this island is normally forbidden to outsiders.

Vanir - Continent further east and north of Alfgard, east of Midgard.. Said to be where certain kinds of gods hail from. Unconfirmed, but winged humanoids are said to be from this region. This region is largely unexplored even by those from Alfgard.

Alfgard - Elf Garden, east of Niffleheim, borders the east and south of Midgard. Elves and Tigerfelk hail from this region. Notable Asian influence.

Jotunher (Jotunheim) - Bordering continent to the west through the south of Muspell, west of Svarta. Extremely low technology and backwater region. Giants, dragons, sea serpents, large fish and any manner of large reptiles (e.g. dinosaurs) are from this region. It is a popular hunting spot to natives and tourists alike. However, outsiders are not welcome.

Svarta - South of Muspell, east of Jotunheim, west of Myrkvellir. Legends speak of dark elves (aka dwarves) that inhabit the region and live underground. The legend has been skewed overtime. Dwarves are known for their smithing techniques as well as the arms and crafts they regularly sell to Muspell.

Myrkvellir - East of Svarta, west of Niffleheim, south of Muspell; borders the Yawning Gap. Myrkvellier literally means “Dark Fields”. Dark Elves live here.

Niffleheim - A long continent situated under Muspell, east of Myrkvellir and south of Midgard. It is considered to be the land of ice as well as the land of the dead. Supposedly the otherworldly demon ‘Hel’ resides here. Those who have seen her are said to die on the spot. Her servant is said to be the Grim Reaper and he ferries the dead on a boat to her (Hel) as their master.

“The Yawning Gap” - Better known as Ginnungagap, this is a region where hot desert air meets with glaciers and cold weather from the mountains in Niffleheim. Inbetween resides a river where life is said to have started. This area is known for its aurora, storms, as well as dense fog and heavy rain. Several branch rivers flow from the Yawning Gap. The Yawning Gap extends to the southern reaches of Niffleheim and forms part of the Abyssal Expanse.

“The Abyssal Expanse” - Sometimes simply referred to as ‘The Abyss’ or ‘The Expanse’. A region that lies to the south of Niffleheim. Borders into the subantarctic regions of Hel. Ships that pass through here are said to disappear into the land of Hel.

Muspeller Sea - The area of inland sea that is contained by bordering Muspell, Svarta, Myrkvellir and Niffleheim. Makes up part of “The Yawning Gap”.

Helheim - Sometimes simply referred to as ‘Hel’ - Subantarctic to arctic region. South of Niffleheim, separated by the Abyss and the ocean. This region is cold and said to be the land of the dead. Few adventurers will go this far.

Nth Dimension - A region in the sixth dimension that intersects the third dimension. This is the realm that Salmira hails from. Beings from this region can understand multiple time vectors, different timelines, as well as how different dimensions can interact with each other. The beings from this area exist as a nexus or matrix of sorts; it could be compared to pure thought existing as raw energy.

Supernatural Beasts

Sprite - An experiment gone awry. These small creatures were meant to be a creation of flesh and nanites that is self sustaining. They are genderless despite having male and female traits. They are capable of ingesting most any kind of substance for food and promply dispose of it as a sort of magic show. Their waste looks like a crystaline mass that takes the form of trees over time. They are considered a pest and a parasite in the continent of Midgard. They were ordered exterminated by Odin some two-hundred years before the start of the story.

Sentinel - An iron race from the Kingdom of Thor. They are tasked with protecting the continent of Midgard. They are sometimes referred to as ‘the iron race’, ‘the iron clads’, ‘those things that fly’, ‘iron vultures’; they are commonly and simply called “Sentinels” among those in Valhalla. They seemingly have the ability to transform from a bipedal to a flight form. In realistic terms they are a robot that turns into a self propelled jet.

Berserker - A member of the ‘berserkergang’ or to be ‘bear of shirt’, is said to become a supernatural creature. Under the light of a full moon they are said to sprout fur, gain super strength and their eyes turn a brilliant yellow. People understand this type of creature to be a werewolf or a werebear. These types of creatures will howl under the full moon of Lokul; they will bite at their swords and attack friend and foe alike. Once the berserkergang wears off they are said to be bedridden for days. Legends say berserkers are a result of breeding between bears, Fenriswolf and then humans; they are therefor sometimes called wearbears or wearwolves.

Fenriswolf - A large species of wolf that has many subpecies. The lesser species are no larger than a normal wolf, the more remarkable are the size of an elephant.

Starscape

The Accretia - Salmira’s ship, one of the original expedition ships aboard the colony ship “Ymir”. It is the only surviving one several millenia later, still functioning and in orbit above the planet Avalan.

The Star Fury - Salyra’s ship. It contained a destructive beam with the power said to destroy a star. In reality it could raze large portions of the planet. However, it did destroy two of Avalan’s moons, Mek and Mecer.

The Ymir - The original colony ship that was sent to the region of “Dwaf”. In reality it was a prison ship that was meant to be dumped far outside the local galaxy. It fell into the Dwaf gravity well and found itself on the opposite side of a quantum singularity (blackhole). The current civilizations (Muspell, Valhalla, etc) are a direct result of this vessel’s population.

Star System Salmare - A triple star system with a red (Angol), orange (Tersha) and blue (Versas) star. It lies the opposite side of space and time of a gravity well where light is reversed from normal space and time. It is the prison of Salmira and so thus is named after her. Sometimes referred to as “The Eye of Salmare” due to the nebula surrounding it looking like an eye.

The Star Angol - SAL A - Primary and brightest star in the Salmare System. Red in color it has many planets in orbit, several of which (including a few moons) which can sustain life. Its gravity is the highest of the stars in Salmare. It orbits Tersha around a common barycenter (center of gravity) once every sixty years.

The Star Tersha - SAL B - Secondary star in the Salmare System; not as bright as, but also orbits Angol around a common barycenter (center of gravity) that takes sixty years. It has several planets, mostly gas giants; none are capable of sustaining life.

The Star Versas - SAL C - Dimmest star in Salmare; blue in color. It orbits Angol and Tersha, taking one hundred forty two years to complete one orbit. It has six planets, two of which are rock worlds, four of which are gas giants.

The Planet Avalan - SAL-IV, fourth planet in the Eye of Salmare. This planet has four moons Lokul, Mardin, Haydura, Mylaka. Originally it had six moons, two of them Mek and Mecer, have been destroyed. They now exist as a ring system that circles the planet. Occasionally when the season is right, particles from the ring system hit the atmosphere and cause brilliant meteor showers.

The Moon Lokul - SAL-IVe, A large moon composed of raw iron. It acts as a large magnet that interacts with certain kinds of nanites. Among other things it causes painful menstruation cycles to those born with elven blood; it is also known to spur werewolf or berserker syndrome. The moon has an orbit of six months. A dune world with an observed color of dull red and a base color of orange. Due to its atmosphere it has dust storms that sweep the entire moon; it is comparable to Mars.

The Moon Hayduria - SAL-IVa, A moon with an atmosphere that sustains life. Cloud formations can be observed through telescopes from the surface of Avalan. The moon has an orbit of two months.

The Moon Mylaka - SAL-IVb, A moon with a three month orbit period. Its base color is a dull grey, its observed color is a dull yellow.

The Moon Mardin - SAL-IVf, A dead rock world with an eight month orbit. Its base color is a dull grey with an observed color of white.

The Avalan Ring System - After the moons Mek and Mecer were destroyed, they exist as a dual ring system around the planet Avalan. Mek’s (SAL-IVc) and Mecer’s (SAL-IVd) original orbits put them between Mylaka and Lokul. Mylaka acts as a shepherd moon between the original single ring and creates a gap between the now existing two ring system. Particles from this ring system sometimes fall to the planet as brilliant meteor showers.

The Moon Mek (SAL-IVc) - A destroyed moon. It now makes up the alpha ring in orbit around Avalan. A shepherd moon (Mylaka), keeps its orbit distinct from the beta ring. It originally had an orbit of four months. It was observed to be a dull orange, its base color was a dull grey.

The Moon Mecer (SAL-IVd) - A destroyed moon. It now makes up the beta ring in orbit around Avalan. A shepherd moon (Mylaka), keeps it seperate from the alpha ring. The moon was volcanically active with a poisonous atmosphere. Due to the vulcanism on the moon it has an observed and base color primarily of red, orange and yellow.
