Interlude - An Interview with Uma

The Author sits atop a small rock with a circular formation of stones arranged around it. The waves of the ocean beat on the beach; the sound of the seagulls overhead is enough to drive anyone mad; but most importantly the air is crisp and clean. This can be none-other than Sentinel Island, the training grounds for future Valkyrie that wish to prove themselves worthy of Odin’s court. However, Valkyrie are not the reason why the Author is here, at least not directly. Instead, he is here for a different sort. Speaking of which…

A strange liquid shape emerges from the water. It slowly takes form as it remains half submerged, but by some enchantment still manages to glide across the water. As it takes form it starts to look like a human. Is it a siren? Not quite, instead, it is a Mantaran. This one in particular goes by the name of Uma. She was introduced quite early on in “Cry of a Valkyrie”.

As the form glides closer, it slowly rises out of the water and takes the outline of a woman with long hair in a dress. The form of the woman finally splashes revealing it is indeed Uma. By the time she has reached the shallow end of the water, she resorts to walking rather than gliding. It is an odd, but graceful way of reaching her land legs. However, when she gets a little closer, she gives a weak smile and proceeds to shake all of the water off of her person.

The Author is promptly soaked.

“Hey!” The Author says it with some authority, but it seems to be lost on Uma.

“I’m so sorry!” She hurries over with a stream of water dripping from her hand; it manifests into a towel

Despite being the creator of this person and novel, the Author is still taken aback at the process.

“So how exactly do you do that?” The Author asks as she rubs the towel up and down his face. She doesn’t answer right away, instead preferring to move the towel all over him. Despite how much water it absorbs, it never seems to get wet. The Author is left to fidget while Uma grabs a hold of him—she plants the towel firmly on his hair and it seemingly absorbs all of the water. She takes one last look at him and then hovers it about a foot from his clothing. Water droplets fly from his clothing and absorb into the towel. Strangely, the towel looks more like a worn rag now. Uma gives it a side glance and then jerks her hand up—the towel turns to water and then absorbs into her hand.

The Author stares at her as she glides over and then elegantly sits down with her legs poised under her. She turns around and looks up at him while shaking her head and flicking her hair. Water droplets splash out from her hair and the Author is left baffled as his face turns red. Uma has won.

“You wanted an interview with me?” Her voice sounds quite young, but low.

The Author goes to open his mouth, but it all comes out as a croak. Uma lets out a cough as she covers her mouth with her fist. Her otherwise blunt and boisterous nature seems to sneak through her elegant facade at points. The Author calms down after that and holds up his notebook. He fidgets with the pages while he looks for his questions.
