not a chapter just background

Good writers sweat and type, poor writers cut and paste, while amateurs just try to guess how to make a paragraph. I really need to learn how to cut and paste…

Characters-

Main character is Alexis, less then 5 feet by a few inches, use to being the shortest person around, and overweight (its just baby fat!) to start. Her Eyes are blue color, hair color brown red. She is smart but generally lazy due to the social system raised in. She has a habit, depending on hair length, of swirling her hair around her right finger or rubbing her cheek. She is naturally left handed but the school system does not allow deviants and she was taught with help of a ruler when she used her left hand to use her right making her almost ambidextrous. Her right arm later on will suffer severe vacuum damage and have to be amputated, later to be replaced with a Warborg hand that does not work well but does give her a second hand. She will live in pain with it due to the technology does not care about pain to the host (Warborgs are always in pain). Her mother was taken away while young due to wanting more children then legally allowed. The father is a scientist who steered her away from his own pursuits.

Secondary character is the Warborgs that she used to help keep her sane during a long time frame where she was the only one awake on the vessel. A Warborg is a metal body with parts of an animal large dog or cat (as in wolves and tigers) that were cloned then dissected and parts installed in to the metal frame. Care for these is almost nonexistent as they are considered murdering machines and are mass-produced for the limited need of combat. The bodies themselves are expected to last less then 5 years due to the animal parts and the metal recycled for another one. Care is given the plug in AI module is what is the brains and it can be changed over to other bodies available. Most have very simple minds as they are only activated for short times, enough to kill this or that, then pulled back out and put in storage. Their knowledge base is all military style and often goes for the direct approach.

Background-

The world at the beginning is more or less combined by UN style over-government. The policies they have are very Socialistic. You could call it like state’s rights over the federal were now put up a scale to world government over the federal government. People who try to better themselves are considered Elitists. The troublesome population is sent on more dangerous jobs. Space exploration is one of the most lethal and gets them off planet and out of the system with little chance of returning, at least during this lifetime. Entertainment is Disney style G rated shows and sitcoms to keep the massed distracted. Sports are around but with the standardization of wages there are no big pay players and the players themselves only play for a few years before transferred to something else to prevent a cult of personality from occurring. The emphasis is on team not star players.

Later on Humans with faster vessels will appear from rogue states that are not part of the big happy family. Capitalistic and violent to her way of upbringing where the strong go ahead of the weak not keep back. These humans will cause her some grief including the loss of her hand. This puts her between the two governments, hundred years from travel to Earth, by her ship’s speed.

Democratic Capitalists League is the other side.

Technology-

Technology has not stood still. But it has been redirected to interests that are slower to mature. Weapons have been limited to computer use for logical nonhuman losses by the UN side. The space exploration ships are like nuclear submarines being mass-produced from raw materials of the asteroid belt.

Prosthetic limb Alexis has golden liquid when proper. It gets 'rusty' looking when fouled.

Freezer Brain is a ‘disease’ caused by too much time frozen. There is a cure for it.

The crew has lost 37 out of 200

The Colonist suffered worst causalities with 492 of 2,000

The Warborg Number 3 Artificial Intelligence unit has been corrupted and one of the bodies died.

And below is my original typing of the story made back in Jan 12 2010. It will let you see how i did some scenes and from your reading you will notice the scenes are no where near close to each other in the story.

Time, many years in the future.

“Mankind has worked hard at balancing between the have and have not. History shows many reasons for this need but those who had it did not want to lose it. The wars it caused are now a thing of the past.” The teacher drones on. Alexis listens with only half an ear.

The slightly pudgy young woman was only in this class to get her Conforming History credits needed to work off-planet. Scores were averaged so she knew the brains would drag her and the rest to a good average C. It would not do to look too good as then she might be docked for elitism.

Instead of doing the class work she was using the data pad to reading instruction manuals of various systems for the RX-34 Cold Ship. It is mankind’s long-range exploration ship that uses cold sleep to travel light years away from the system and she was going to be on one. Privately she giggles at the plan to leave these kids behind and go off to explore the universe and return centuries later with all them dead and buried. She had a hard time with a few kids and was often called a throw back to an era when humans were more barbaric. Conformity for all levels of society and economy did not suit her well as she wanted more but no matter what she wanted she knew she had to hide it just like her birth mother taught her at an young age.

She took a look out of the window at the boring sight of straight lines of roads filled with the same sort of vehicles and buildings all with the same bland façade. It was so fake, but in a week she would be gone from here.

The week was one of the longest in her life. Only the time she spent a month wondering why her mother was locked away for the good of humanity was longer. She wishes she could have said good bye but her mother was caught trying for a third child and determined to be a dangerous individual and put away for the good of all society. Her hidden books helped Alexis get through the next year till they were found and burned as contaminated content. She had to walk a narrow line for three years after that being watched all the time. She made a game of it as a kid but was resentful and that is why she is glad to get away.

Preparations for the flight to orbit with all her stuff being given away or disposed of took her only hour. The fight was sub-light and she would be frozen for most of the voyage. Each crewman would rotate for a part of it to check critical systems before going again back to sleep. The estimated 500 year voyage to and from the system they were to check out would age her 3 years. Her account would have a nice bonus for service rendered and her record cleaned of any, misconduct she had done.

The flight to the deep space launch platform was nothing as her and the crew as they were frozen on ground and launched on a ballistic course to the massive factory just beyond the asteroid belt.

If anything had happened she would never known. She had thought about what it would have been like for a slip in the targeting and the robotically controlled ship could have hit Mars instead. The crater and all the chunks of frozen body parts in the red sand. It was not the best thing on ones mind when she was being frozen.

Alexis woke up still in the cryo-tube. Her mouth felt dry as she slowly awakened for her time at the controls. Looking over there was something wrong but her defrosted mind was still working on it as the tube opened allowing her to get up. The light strips of fabric, one called a bikini from some old historical reference, chafed on her in spots as she removed the mouth cover.

She felt funny a bit and found her hair was almost to stubble length and wondered how long she was out. Her hair should have just been starting to grow from the shaving they did of all hair on the body before being frozen. She did not understand the reason only it was great when she got a copy of the recording Hilary taped of the males getting shaved. The sound of the men crying out when they got clean-shaven, with a few tender spot nicks, everywhere was priceless.

Alexis looked over the Military consol and worried about it but hit one of the switches to activate and defrost a Warborg. Such a devise was only to be used in case of danger by those in charge but she was in charge if the damaged ship and lonely. She needed someone to talk to and help her. Even one of these things would be of great help to her sanity. The Warborg shifted as it was defrosted and the animalist face shown behind the clear plate. Alexis was surprised it was not shaved like the humans on board were but still had most of its black fur on its canine face. A Warborg was not human at all but a cloned animal that was dissected and then spread over a robotic frame with a master AI unit plugged in to it. They were made so humans would not have to fight. Creatures from nightmares whose only job is to kill others do the decent upstanding humans would not have to. She only read about such so seeing one made her want to pee herself. The creature cried out in pain then the AI unit was slotted in to its back and a modulated voice called out, “AI unit 8 activated. Mission and parameters loaded. Non-combat mission to commence under command of…” The machine makes a pause there as its systems move and the Warborg comes off the rack showing to be slightly smaller then she is. It looks over at her continuing, “Non-Military personal Alexis Smith.”

Alexis can not stop herself but pukes seeing fur and skin still on the rack and the sores of the loss of it on the Warborg who stands before her.

The Warborg waits patiently for her not judging her weakness or even the fact she got some on its feet. She now knows why they are shaven but why she can not fathom did they not do the same for this creature.
