As the first lzombie, the "Sprinter," broke through, Brad was quick to shoot it down, its body collapsing in the rain. Soon after, the sound of more zombies echoed from the breach, and in no time, they swarmed in like ants.
Brad's team and Ingram's squad, serving as the first line of defense, relentlessly fired their guns to halt the zombie onslaught.
Though these "Sprinters" moved swiftly, they couldn't withstand the intense barrage of bullets, falling one by one to the ground. For a moment, the security team had the upper hand, controlling the situation.
"here you go! We can control the situation!"
Brad cheered triumphantly, his adrenaline pumping. But his joy was short-lived.
Just as the pile of fallen Sprinters lay still, a level-3 zombie, the "Springer," leaped out from the breach, howling ferociously.
These goblin-like creatures weren't to be underestimated. They scaled walls like spider monkeys, leaping several meters in a single bound.
"Oh no! The Frogger are here!"
someone shouted, warning the others. The entire security line had no choice but to retreat as the Froggers evaded bullets and began to swarm over the abandoned buildings, pouncing on the guards from above.
As casualties mounted and cries of agony filled the air, the first defense line fell into chaos.
Ingram, caught in the midst of it, was busy directing the retreat when she accidentally tripped, leaving herself vulnerable to an incoming Springer leaping down from above.
"Watch out!"
A gunshot rang out, and a Springer dropped lifeless, courtesy of Brad.
"It's you..."
Ingram looked at Brad gratefully, but Brad knew it wasn't the time for sentimentality. He swiftly pulled Ingram up by her shoulder, saying,
"SLet’s talk about it later! Let’s get out of here!"
Brad supported Ingram, her twisted ankle making it difficult to move, as they dashed toward the inner city.
Little did they know, as the security forces retreated, the construction drones miraculously came back to life, their depleted power reserves suddenly restored, and they began to rapidly fill the breach.
This wasn't by chance. In the distant control room of the construction drones, Mayor Oz watched everything through their cameras, muttering to himself:
"I can only help here...Young man, I hope you feel that such recklessness is worth it..."
Allen observed the commotion on the outer wall and immediately stepped on the power skateboard to start tracking the zombies' movements.
When some of the Frogger came to the abandoned streets, what awaited them were streets blocked by piles of waste. This was the "maze" created by the two teams of David and Bert.
If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
The challenge now was dealing with the Froggers who couldn't be contained by the maze. With hordes of Froggers approaching and freely leaping from building to building, Hannah, observing from afar through binoculars, gave her orders.
"Take out the Frogger."
"Roger that!" David and Bert responded promptly.
In the pouring rain, as the Sprinters struggled to navigate the maze, the Froggers leaped across the rooftops. But soon, silenced shots pierced through the air, taking down one Springer after another.
Confused and unable to pinpoint the source of the gunfire, the Froggers howled in frustration as they fell one by one, victims of snipers positioned 200 meters away in the buildings, courtesy of David and Bert's deployment.
With the Froggers eliminated, the first phase of the operation was successfully completed.
Returning to Brad and Ingram's situation, they found themselves without a plan as the zombies breached their defenses, forcing them to retreat with their team back to the inner city gate.
Below the inner city wall, 400 guards stood in formation, each holding a weapon. Despite the pouring rain, they remained vigilant, ready to face the incoming zombie horde.
"Report to the commander, 400 personnel are in position and ready for deployment!"
A squad leader approached a man observing the scene with a cigarette in hand, calm and composed. This man was none other than Ethan.
Ethan took a drag from his cigarette as he looked at the squad leader reporting to him.
" Does anyone know where Hannah is?" he asked.
The squad leader shook his head.
"No one knows her whereabouts, Commander. And several squads have also lost contact. Should we locate them?"
Ethan seemed to confirm something upon hearing this but remained composed, simply smiling as he instructed,
"Nothing"
Once the squad leader departed, Ethan exhaled a plume of smoke, watching it rise before murmuring to himself,
""Interesting, what trick are you guys playing?"
However, that wasn't the most pressing matter at hand, for with the commotion outside, the frontline security forces had finally returned to the inner city walls, their numbers dwindling as they reached safety.
After opening the gates and safely escorting the injured Ingram to the medics, Brad led his returning team up to the city walls, ready to defend together.
And sure enough, the zombies were hot on their heels.
Under the glare of powerful floodlights, dozens of Sprinters could be seen sprinting through the rain along the 200-meter stretch leading to the inner city gate. Meanwhile, numerous Froggers leaped from building to building on either side of the street, converging on the same path.
However, what struck everyone as odd was the relatively small number of zombies, with no more appearing behind them. It was clearly a strange situation.
Little did the security forces know that on the outer wall, construction drones had stealthily repaired the breach, and no one had detected the covert anti-Ethan operation in motion. But nobody had the bandwidth to question it now; the priority was dealing with the zombies at hand.
From his observation post, Ethan's demeanor wasn't that of a cautious leader but rather that of someone gleefully treating zombie-killing as a game.
Pulling out his blade, Ethan leisurely sharpened it, arrogantly issuing orders,
"Listen! Prepare the machine gun! Kill all the slingers on the building first!"
At Ethan's command, the machine gunners on the wall immediately aimed at the Froggers on the buildings, ready to open fire.
As the Froggers on the opposite buildings howled and leaped towards them, a barrage of bullets erupted from the machine guns, unleashing a furious onslaught and kicking off the zombie extermination battle.
Though the Froggers fell one by one from the high rooftops, the Sprinters continued to charge forward fearlessly. Their speed was extraordinary, leaving many of the guards on the wall struggling to keep up. Bullets whizzed past them from behind, unable to catch up.
"Damn! They're too fast! Can't hit them!!"
The guards on the wall lamented as they repeatedly missed their targets. However, they seemed unconcerned, as the 50-meter-high wall was impregnable to the Sprinters.
As many Sprinters rushed to the base of the wall, attempting to climb up, they lacked the powerful claws of the Froggers and found themselves stuck, unable to ascend or descend.
The moment everyone had been waiting for arrived. All the guards aimed their weapons downward and, after a barrage of gunfire, systematically dispatched the Sprinters one by one.
"Enough!"
At Ethan's command, the guards ceased fire. Now, only a few scattered Sprinters remained below, roaring in frustration.
Stepping out from the observation tower, fully armored and donning a black mask reminiscent of a horror movie villain, Ethan declared,
"Let me out. I'll personally take care of the rest."
Though murmurs spread among the guards on the wall, none dared to oppose or dissuade him. After all, nobody dared to defy him.
As the heavy gates swung open once more, Ethan, clad in his dark armor and wielding twin blades, stepped out alone into the open space. Only ten remaining Sprinters seemed to sense that this was no ordinary man and hesitated to approach, growling from a distance.
Ethan halted, slowly raising his blades with confidence and provocation.
"Come on, Bring it on."
Before the words even left his lips, the first Sprinter couldn't resist any longer and pounced. In the blink of an eye, Ethan swiftly decapitated it with a blur of movement, then resumed his stance.
The supernaturally fast swordplay left everyone on the wall dumbfounded.
Watching as the headless zombie fell, the remaining Sprinters grew even more frenzied and charged forward. Ethan, twirling his blades effortlessly, taunted,
" Puppies,be careful"
