Chapter 6 (Part 2): IRL

Noah pressed the accelerator, guiding his car with deft precision through the weekend's sparse traffic. The engine responded with a smooth, cat-like purr, its harmonious hum a comforting backdrop. The wind, as it whisked past the windows, sliced through the eerie silence, its rushing sound a solitary companion on his swift journey. It was as if the world had gone to sleep, leaving him alone in the deserted streets.

He pulled into the office parking lot and sighed at the emptiness. The only other car there was Emily’s.

As Noah approached the building's entrance, a distant sound caught his attention. It was a bird's chirp, soft and sweet, coming from the nearby trees. The melody was a stark contrast to the dull gray walls of the building and the fluorescent lights that flickered above him. It reminded him of the freedom and serenity of the outdoors, whether in the real world or virtual.

He couldn't help but think of the immersive world of 'Age of the Behemoth,' where he could escape to a vivid and liberating virtual reality. The sound of the bird was like a portal, transporting him to a place where he could roam freely in lush forests and fields, and hunt with his friends. A world where he could forget about work, stress, and responsibilities.

Noah shook his head, clearing his mind of the daydream. He needed to focus on the task at hand, but the longing for the outdoors lingered in his heart.

Once inside, he saw Emily sitting at the reception desk, typing away at her computer. Her long, painted nails clicked on the keyboard like tiny, tap-dancing feet. Noah couldn't help but admire her immaculate appearance and poise, a stark contrast to his disheveled and exhausted state.

He trudged over to her, the sound of his footsteps echoing in the empty lobby. "Hey, Emily," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "Ethan told me to come in and take a look at the system."

Emily looked up at him, her face expressionless. "Okay," she said flatly. "I'll let him know you're here."

Noah sighed as he made his way to the server room, feeling the weight of the world on his shoulders. It seemed like the universe was conspiring against him, forcing him to work on a weekend while everyone else got to enjoy their free time. The thought made him feel like a hamster trapped in a wheel, endlessly running without getting anywhere.

Finally, after what felt like hours, Noah finished the job and left the building. He breathed in the fresh air outside, feeling like a prisoner who had just been released from jail. The sun was setting on the horizon, casting a golden glow over the world, and the birds were singing once more.

Noah got into his car and drove home, to his sanctuary, the weight of the day still heavy on his shoulders.

Noah trudged through the front door of his apartment, feeling like a zombie after a long and grueling day at work. His feet dragged on the hardwood floor, and he could feel every step as if he was wading through quicksand.

He kicked off his shoes and slumped onto the couch, sinking into the soft cushions with a sigh of relief. The fabric was cool against his skin, and he closed his eyes, letting out a deep breath.

He sat in silence, his mind weighed down by the events that had transpired. Although he longed to escape into the world of Age of the Behemoths and lose himself in the thrill of the hunt, he felt too exhausted to move.

In search of a reprieve, he reached for the remote and turned on the television, hoping to find some solace in mindless entertainment. The bright screen illuminated the room, casting flickering shadows on the walls and offering a momentary respite from the weight of the day.

As he sat there, staring blankly at the screen, he couldn't help but notice the state of his apartment. The sink was filled with dirty dishes, and clothes were strewn about the floor. The mess only added to his sense of unease, a constant reminder that he had neglected his surroundings.

He closed his eyes again in an attempt to block out his surroundings. But it only made his mind return to the events of the day. The technical issue he had been called in to fix had been more complicated than he had anticipated, and it had taken hours to resolve. He had barely had time to eat or drink anything, and the constant buzzing of his phone had left him feeling exhausted and drained.

He couldn't help but think about how unfair it all was. He worked harder than anyone else in the company, putting in countless hours of overtime and sacrificing his personal life. And yet, he was still overlooked and undervalued.

Noah groaned and covered his face with his hands, feeling the weight of the day crushing him. He was bone tired, and his body ached from sitting in front of a computer screen for so long.

As he lay there, he could hear the muffled sounds of the city outside. The honking of cars, the distant chatter of people, and the occasional siren. It was like a symphony of noise, a constant reminder of the world outside.

Noah knew he needed to take care of himself and his apartment, but the thought of moving was too much to bear. He felt like a lump of clay, too heavy and too tired to do anything. Noah let out a heavy sigh, feeling an overwhelming sense of helplessness wash over him. For now, he just needed to rest and try to let go of the stresses of the day.

As Noah lay there for what felt like hours, lost in his thoughts and the sound of his own breathing, the sudden sound of something moving caught his attention. He opened his eyes to see a blur of movement, and then a familiar shape came into focus. It was Casper, the neighbor's cat, gracefully leaping through the open window. His fur was ruffled by the breeze and he landed on his paws with a soft thud.

Noah watched with a smile as Casper looked around the room, his green eyes scanning every corner with curiosity. His tail swished back and forth in contentment. He couldn't help but smile at the sight of him, feeling a sense of comfort and familiarity in his presence.

"Hey there, Casper," he said softly, reaching out to stroke his fur. Casper purred contentedly, nuzzling his head against Noah’s hand.

Noah sat up slowly, feeling a sense of calm wash over him. He had been so lost in his own thoughts. But now, with the cat by his side, he felt grounded and connected.

Noah watched as the cat explored his apartment, his tail twitching as he sniffed at various objects. He seemed to be searching for something, his nose leading him from room to room.

Casper wandered over to the kitchen and began poking his head into the sink, searching for food.

As the cat rummaged through the dirty dishes, it accidentally got its paw stuck in something sticky. It let out a pitiful meow as it tried to pull its paw free, knocking over a stack of pots and pans in the process.

The cat seemed oblivious to the chaos it was causing, its attention focused on finding food. It hopped up on the counter and began pushing things off with its paws, sending cups and utensils crashing to the floor.

The noise startled it, causing it to jump down from the counter and scurry away.

Noah couldn't help but laugh at the cat's antics, feeling a spark of joy in his otherwise depressing day. He knew he needed to get his life back on track, and watching the cat's silly behavior was just the push he needed to start. I feel a bit more pumped now which makes me want to play Age of the Behemoths, but I guess I should do some tidying first before Casper causes any more trouble.

Casper scampered across the living room and stopped in front of the couch, his tail twitching nervously.

As he made his way back to the couch, he paused for a moment, his eyes fixed on the soft cushions. He sniffed at the air, and then with a graceful leap, he landed on the couch and began kneading the fabric with his paws.

Noah watched in wonder as he settled in, his body molding to the shape of the couch as if it were made just for him. The purring that emanated from him was like a soothing balm, and Noah felt his stress melt away. Well this is not getting things done. I better get up and start cleaning. Then I can get some gaming in.

He got up from the couch, determined to clean his apartment and take control of his life once again.
