Volume 1 Chapter 5: Home

Walking down a well-lit hallway to a door with three names on it, (Noriko Moriya, Aldrich Elden Agnis, Gaelia Sage Valerian). Entering the doorway, the duo set off to do their daily tasks. Inside there is home is a comfy, but relatively compact apartment. A dining room with short table with four chairs connected to a kitchen with a stove, oven, and kitchen counter can be seen before anything else. 3 small bedrooms stack side by side with a restroom and a few cabinets and essential furniture can also be seen connected to the dining room. A large window can been at one of the walls, showing the evening sun as it sets. On the walls are a few pictures.

The first picture shows an image of young adult dragon, easily out sizing any of the other people in the picture. Only her head shows up next to all of the others. Her scales are green and dark green leading up to her 3 horns, 2 of which extend outwards in separate directions while the third horn extends directly from the middle of her scalp to the back of her head. Next to her is a large egg, the size of a dog. The egg is patterned in green and white scales that spiral upwards. Besides the egg is Noriko smiling as she looks at the egg. A smaller Leah and Hiram are also seen next to the egg with Leah hugging it. The picture next it has Aldrich breaking through his egg with Leah and a few others watching in the background. The newly born Aldrich has no real color, bearing white, clear scales. The following picture has several people gathering around Gaelia and the baby Aldrich as she holds him. Besides the usual crowd, several other people can also be seen gathering around. Lord Sinclair, Gokin, Queen Melissa, and several other important looking people are also gathered around, some holding gifts or food. Gaelia herself holds a grand smile on her face as she looks at her son.

Setting her baggage down, Noriko makes herself at home as she washes her hands and starts on making dinner. Aldrich does the same and then asks her,

“What are we making for dinner tonight?”

Putting her hand on her chin, she ponders a bit before answering,

“Well I was thinking we make an elven dinner tonight. My grandmother was making it when I went over to see them the other day. It comprises of using steamed Azure rice wrapped around some meat. On the side we could use Kiiroi eggs with some Skinny Onions. How does that sound Aldrich?”

As she names the ingredients, Aldrich pictures them. Azure rice, a light blue rice, generally steamed and eaten. Kiiroi eggs, eggs from a Kiiroi, a yellow fowl capable of flight and are always yellow. They are generally eat seeds and fruits and are quite round birds. Domesticated Kiirois lay plenty of eggs and are found near seed bearing plants such as Azure rice. Skinny Onions, thin onions usually used for cooking, making a great smell when cooked but smells when eaten raw.

“I think it’s a good idea. I like Kiiroi eggs, but I’m not sure we have any left.”

Noriko then walks towards a rectangular metal box. She opens it up a door on the box and looks inside for ingredients. On the roof of the box is an active symbol spell. The design and purpose of the spell is to induce a chilling effect inside the box, making it effectively a refrigerator. Another spell is also activated as the door is open, one that generates a source of light that glows at the top of the refrigerator. From top to bottom, several shelves with different types of fruits and vegetables are stored. At the very bottom of the refrigerator is a compartment that can be pulled out. Inside this is a single bag of poultry meat. Taking out the bag and some fist sized yellow eggs Noriko announces,

“We have the eggs, but this is the last bag of Kiiroi meat.”

She waves the bag in the air at Aldrich before continuing,

This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work.

“We’re going to need to go to the market tomorrow, preferably before your lessons.”

Aldrich nods in agreement before responding with,

“Could I chop the meat?”

“Sure”

Noriko hands Aldrich the bag before her stomach rumbles. She chuckles before expressing,

“We should hurry.”

Getting to work, Aldrich pulls up a chair next to the kitchen counter before standing up and pulling out a knife from the cabinet and chanting a sharpening voice incantation. The knife glows and sheens before Aldrich starts separating the bones from the meat. Noriko pulls out a bag of Azure rice from another cabinet and places some in a steaming pot before turning on the stove. She then weaves a water spell to produce clean and clear water into a water pot and then places it on the burner. As the water starts to boil, Noriko places the steaming pot on top the water pot as to let the evaporating water from the water pot flow through the rice and then covering the rice to maintain the steam with the rice. As she finished placing the pots together, she turns to pull out a single Skinny Onion and starts chopping it with another knife. As she holds the knife, she automatically enchants it with a sharpening effect. As she finishes with chopping the onion, she heads over to the Kiiroi eggs and starts breaking them into a bowl. Afterwards she sprinkles some salt and seasonings before tossing in the chopped onion. Finishing up, she mixes the ingredients inside the bowl before speaking to Aldrich,

“Are you done with meat?”

“Yeah almost done, just need to toss out the bones.”

“Good, I’ll start cooking the eggs.”

Pulling out a pan, Noriko pours the mixed eggs onto a pan before turning on another burner. The eggs cook quickly as Aldrich comes in with the meat. Noriko is stirring the eggs before she says,

“Aldrich, you cook the eggs while I season the meat.”

“Alright”

Aldrich places the meat down next to Noriko before taking over the stirring. Noriko takes the meat and adds salt and seasoning to it in another bowl before checking the rice. Pulling the top off, she looks at the rice. The rice has now puffed up and looks incredibly soft. Stirring the rice around, she checks if all of the rice are thoroughly steamed, to which it is.

“The rice is done.”

As she says this, she removes the rice before placing a pan and start cooking the meat. A rich and flavorful aroma makes itself known as both the eggs and the poultry meat are cooked in tandem. The eggs finish first and Aldrich takes out the eggs into a bowl and covers it as to preserve the heat.

“Eggs are done.”

“Great, the meat’s going to take a little bit longer.”

Hoping off the chair, Aldrich goes to wash his hands at the sink before walking to the window. The last rays of light are seen at the horizon as the sun sets. Looking out, Aldrich sees much of the landscape outside the village. The sun sets behind a great sea where the local port sends fishermen out to catch fish. The town descend into the night as the local night lights dot along the roads and houses. Looking up at the stars Aldrich askes Noriko,

“What do you think the stars are?”

“Huh, oh um… stars huh.”

As she cooks the meat, Noriko recalls the stories and theories.

“Let’s see… according to various legends, stars are guiding lights of the star god designed to lead travelers in the right direction but a star god doesn’t exist. Still the stars look like different objects in the sky. You could use them to locate direct yourself in a certain direction. According to dragon scholars, ones who have studied for since the dawn of the world, stars are other sources of magic who’s light dot the void. Like I read from the story today, the stars appeared when magic appeared in our world so the dragons thought that the lights must also be magic appearing throughout the other worlds.”

Aldrich ponders on this as Noriko finishes up with cooking the meat.

“Aldrich come here, we’re going to wrap the meat.”

Aldrich runs over as they start wrapping the cooked Kiiroi meat with the Azure rice.

“My grandmother said that by wrapping the meat, the meat’s juices and taste spreads onto the rice.”

“Am I wrapping it right?”

“Maybe? I think it’s supposed to be like this.”

Noriko and Aldrich make discuss their discoveries and troubles as they wrap the meat. Both of them messes up a few times as the wrap would crumble and not stick. After several minutes, they finish up.

“Well… it doesn’t exactly look like how my grandmother made, but it does look good.”

“I think we did well for our first time.”

“Let’s put it away for now while we wait for Gaelia.”

They put away and cover the rice wrappings before gathering all of the food and placing them on the dining table.
