Volume 1 Chapter 39: Noriko’s Failure

As soon as the teleportation spell was prepared, Noriko called her group to follow her. She had already contacted the southern elven group and had ordered an attack on the last anti-magic device. The injured were left behind with a few elves to escort them back to the dragon roost.

With the whirl of a spell, Noriko, Yumi, and almost a hundred other elves, the combined forces from the northern and southern groups, appeared at the eastern gates. Before them was a much larger and more fortified human camp. Every invader that had survived the counter attacks had made their way here and held onto the camp with tenacity. The elves that were already here were forced to siege the camp. A frontal assault was dissuaded as the camp had begun using the ballistas that teleported from the other sites as anti-infantry turrets rather than ones designed against dragons.

Noriko’s and the other hundred elves’ appearance however, began turning the tides of battle. Slowly they were able to pick off the manned turrets while taking ground. What the elves didn’t expect was a massive black fog that was set upon them, rendering their marksmanship ineffective. Taking advantage of that, the humans charged in from behind the vanguard of trolls and ogres. Fierce fighting ensued as chaos beset the entire battlefield. During this moment, Noriko, using her elven song type magic, was able to cleanse parts of the fog and give room for the elves to regroup.

As the fog dissipated from the air and she could see the stars above, she witnessed Gaelia be struck multiple times by ballista bolts and by the god form. With rage, her normally calm voice and song turned into a berserk fury, emboldening the elven warriors with a sense of rage. They sallied outwards and into the uncleansed parts of the fog.

Despite the close proximity of the anti-magic device, Noriko’s magical song held enough power to influence the elves. They could hear and feel her madness as her friend was shot. Through the song, they all knew that they must defeat the humans and destroy the device with haste. Heading into the fray herself, Noriko led the angry elves right into the heart of the camp, damning the consequences.

To anyone’s surprise, their frenzied assault was highly effective as the humans were trying to regroup as well, retreating from the fog and deeper into the camp. Their plan was to stall the elves enough so that they could deploy their secret weapon. In their retreat, they were cut down from behind as no rear guard was set. Elves swarmed into the human camp decimating most of their forces.

Unknownst to both the elves and the humans, the secret weapon was already set and ready. The eastern anti-magic device had a special function. It was designed to place all of the magic gathered into a single place in order to be used quickly at one time, which seemed obvious as all the other ones did the same, however this one also had the ability to absorb souls that had detached themselves within its radius. In this case, the prince was using the gathered ether and souls in order to restore the god form. Although only a few elves fell in the battle, their souls were not taken as they did not believe in the human gods.

As Noriko and Yumi neared the last resistance by the anti-magic device. She shielded her eyes as a bright light lit up the skies. It was as if the sun had suddenly reappeared in the dead of night. She shivered as a massive wave of ether poured out from the light source. Squinting, she saw Gaelia’s draconic outburst. It radiated grace and power. Her own song became empowered, increasing the other elves’ abilities and magic even more so. The black fog also was banished altogether in the blinding light.

Sensing that victory was upon them, Noriko charged ahead, witnessing the prince and the old elf. The prince looked vexed, the old elf was relaxed. The old elf smiled and said,

“Just as planned.”

With a vacuuming of the ether, the anti-magic device violently gathered more ether and the recently fallen souls and converted it into pure power for the god form, shooting the magic at the injured god form in the distance. Noriko turned around, saw what was happening, and attempted to stop them. Pulling up her bow, she readied a runed arrow and shot it. The arrow pierced into the device and exploded, but it was already too late.
