Chapter 5: Military Police Department

Chapter 5: Military Police Department

The MPD, short for the Military Police Department, was a formidable force in Omega Sector.

Its members were comprised of former soldiers who were given the choice to continue their service as enforcers or be discharged into the civilian population.

Those who chose to stay received privileges and weapons unlike any other.

The department possessed advanced body armor, weapons, and access to drones, dropships, and other high-tech tools that helped them carry out their duties.

Matching their gear the MPD headquarters was a state-of-the-art marble building situated in the center of the city.

Without a doubt it was a fortress; Anti-air flak cannons, multi-layer shield generators, and underground railway system just to name a few.

One surprising thing to note however was their recruitment system.

If you were strong enough, you could simply join without any problem.

To illustrate the extreme nature of the MPD's recruitment process, even a psychopathic killer who had murdered hundreds of MPD officers could be accepted into the force, albeit with close monitoring for a brief period of time.

After this probationary period, they were given full autonomy to act as they pleased.

However, all this freedom had one cost, if you are called upon, you respond.

To many people’s surprise their ranks had grown quite a bit, they had up to seven companies now.

While other mega cities had alternative law enforcement structures, none matched the brute and might of the Military Police Department of Omega Sector.

Of course other powerful groups in Omega Sector existed aside from the MPD.

Some soldiers who didn't join the MPD often turned to crime and joined gangs, creating their own pockets of resistance.

These criminals weren't lacking in firepower either.

They often were equipped with salvaged goods from the black market, but occasionally or should I say more often than not, more dangerous weapons would appear in mass.

One instance of this phenomenon was the prevalence of old super weapons from past wars, such as the Nova Arm Cannon, which was once wielded by the Killer AI robots that tried to take over the world.

This devastating weapon could collapse atom molecules creating intense heat, like a sun in a bottle, and had the power to shoot it forth and destroy anything in its path.

Thankfully it had been taken care of relatively quickly.

On another note, the MPD command structure was quite rudimentary, dividing the city into five simple sectors with one or two captains overseeing their respective companies of several hundred officers and support roles.

However, with a city as large as Omega, their manpower was limited, and only answered when triggered, like a ravenous hornet’s nest.

Captain L. Luck, leader of the 7th Company in the MPD, had a distinguished military background, having fought in the 10th World War; which wasn’t all too impressive by itself, but the fact that he was unaltered made his survival all the more jaw dropping.

He was bald-headed with a thick mustache that adorned his upper lip, and while he was a man of few words.

The scars on his face and body were a testament to the many battles he had fought, and he held an unwavering sense of duty and a no-nonsense attitude.

He hoped to uphold justice and represent some semblance of honor in a world filled with chaos and violence but even that seemed harder to achieve with each day.

In fact recently he had undergone cybernetic modifications to better cope with the harsh realities of life.

It was a simple augmentation he thought, it was a simple cybernetic arm replacing his right arm.

However he refused to get any type of direct link which would’ve fused his nerves with the machine, rather he opted to wear an external transmitter in his left ear.

Luck was highly regarded by his men, but other Captains looked down on him, often murmuring about his promotion being politically motivated or out of pity for an mostly unmodified human.

Despite the rumors, Captain Luck was determined to give his all, even if his time as Captain was temporary.

Sitting at his desk, Captain Luck was absorbed in the papers spread out in front of him when a knock sounded on his door. "Come in," he commanded.

His subordinate entered, visibly trembling and hesitant to meet the captain's gaze. "Captain," he stammered, "I have some terrible news."

The captain's expression remained impassive, but his eyes glinted with concern. "Report," he ordered.

"Sir, we've received word that one of our outposts in Sector 9 has been destroyed," the subordinate said. "There were no survivors."

The captain's expression didn't change, but his eyes narrowed. "Destroyed?" he asked.

"Some type of explosive, sir," the subordinate said. "There were no survivors."

The captain leaned back in his chair, his eyes still focused on the subordinate. "So, what's our plan of action?" he asked.

"We're working on it, sir," the subordinate said.

"W-we're trying to gather more information and find the culprit. B-but… judging from the situation we may need your permission to mobilize more troops."

The captain nodded decisively. "Do what you must," he said.

"We will not let these criminals destroy our city. Not when we are so close to returning back to something resembling a society!"

The subordinate saluted and left the room. Captain Luck sat back down, his mind racing as he planned his next move.

As the 7th Captain of the Military Police Department in charge of Sector 9, he knew he had to act quickly and decisively to prevent any further destruction.

He was determined to do whatever it takes to bring justice to those responsible.
