Chapter 7: Afterburn

Chapter 7: Afterburn

It was night in the middle of the road, with crickets singing amidst the abandoned farmlands. The weather was pleasant, around 22ºC (or ~72 ºF). The large crater formed in the battle had fully calmed down, and all the fire had extinguished. Luckily, the fire hadn't spread beyond the village or its surroundings. Only ashes remained, drifting in the light breeze of that placid night.

Chump woke up in a violent cough, expelling mostly saliva and mucus. Reacting quickly, he held onto the wheel of the car, the seatbelt pinning him in place. After that violent cough, he gasped for air, looked around in a hurry, and fixed his glasses in place. Strangely, those glasses hadn't broken throughout the entire ordeal.

"Where am I? Are we dead?" he exclaimed, his mind replaying the last moments of the event. "Doesn't seem so..." He looked around, greeted only by the absence of anyone alive. Just beside them, the giant Hamberge/long sword made him jump in surprise, but there was no giant humanoid chasing them. It took him a minute or so for his body to calm down, but his heart still felt stressed. "Zippy? Zippy! ZIPPY!"

Hurriedly unlocking the seat belt, he inspected the car. No bunny, only leftover hair around. He unlocked the door and rushed outside. "ZIIIIPPPYYYY!!!" he shouted, emotions welling up in his throat. "Zippy... no..."

Then he saw a figure in a ball of dust, rising up in the wind. He stepped back a few paces, only for his back to bump against the sword, feeling a force behind him, as if he was against a wall. But his worried face slowly changed to a shy one and then to a full smile.

"Master! You're finally awake!" Zippy exclaimed through telepathy. It seemed that he was genuinely happy to see the human back on its feet, although he brought something with him in his mouth. But that would come after a big old hug in a single jump. Chump took a step back, observing the significant changes that Zippy had undergone.

His arms fully extended, Zippy grew significantly larger, almost a meter tall, including his fuzzy ears. His eyes now had a vibrant blue line connecting them, and his tiny paws had fey blue lines around them. Exaggerated whiskers, half a palm long, formed zigzags in perfect symmetry. His chest emitted sparkles, a never-stopping fireworks display. It was evident to anyone that the peculiar kind of magic the goddess had given him, the Remenant, filled him in new ways.

"Ouch! Sparks!" he complained, half-jokingly, only to giggle. "I really thought we were a goner, buddy..." They hugged and snuggled for some time before parting.

"Are we dead-dead? Or alive? Did my plan work? I was so tired... I couldn't... My brain shut down. I am really sorry, I—" His voice began to tremble, struggling to find the right words before Zippy placed his head on his hand.

"Master! Don't worry! That guy is dead! Here~, I brought you cookies from that store with the door in shambles.~" Zippy handed the now shocked, confused, and bamboozled human a pack of chocolate and cream cookies.

It took a moment to look at the now wholly ruined village, then at the big bunny. Then it looked back and forth a couple more times and shyly asked, "It was you, Zippy?" Zippy shook his head. "…It was me?" Zippy nodded once again. "Is that guy dead… dead? Like fully dead?" He moved his head like a chicken toward him, incredulous of that information.

Zippy nodded with his head. "The system told me! And it gave me this new form! I feel tons of energy, Master! Do you like the cookies, master?"

Chump, without changing his expression of pure confusion and surprise, looked at the bunny and opened the pack of cookies, a bit melted. He took a bite while still processing everything that happened. "They feel warm… They're delicious, Zippy. You remembered my favourites..." He spoke honestly, his tone expressing complete bafflement after the whole day. It took him a while to acknowledge this information.

"Thank you, Master! It was hard to get inside! And the blast destroyed the whole village, but I found some food for you!" Zippy jumped around the human, surveying the entire village.

His mind raced through quick thoughts. "That's not okay, that's not okay at all! The system told him that he is dead?! Why does the system suddenly control everything?! That doesn't make sense! We are alive! Somehow! I…" He snapped out of it and commented while turning around. "Would you mind telling me… All you knew of what happened while we go to the village?"

Zippy nodded before walking with him. "Of course, master! What do we do about the sword?" He asked with a bit of impatience and excitement.

Chump glanced at the car and the giant sword, his face changing, a serious tone taking over. "Oh, right, the sword…" The sword didn’t give any resembling aura; however, the light of the main jewel, a jewel that resembled encapsulated space and stars inside it, lit up the surroundings. "I don’t want to touch it." He placed his hand behind his neck. "What if it's cursed or has something toxic or anything?! Like, you remember—"

“Since when did you…”

In a tiny hurricane, the sword was pulled off the ground, easy enough, and placed on a giant cloud of wind, almost fully transparent if it weren’t for the dust and ashes that made up that part of the spell. Without saying a word, only looking at such a splendid event, Chump opened up the trunk of the car, let the sword fall on it, diagonally, and barely closed it. “Alright, I am gonna see your stats. Do you mind?” Zippy negated with its tiny head.

They took the car and went back inside the blast radius, as Zippy described almost perfectly the whole event after he was knocked out, leaving off the conversation between him and the system since he didn’t remember it. “And…I felt exhausted too, I guess… I can’t remember more. I woke up being and feeling like this…” Zippy added while they got off the car.

“Huh… That’s super weird. I… Doesn’t make sense if that guy decided to blow himself up, but perhaps there's a clue in the place. Let me check you now…” He looked at the stats and him a couple of times and smiled with confidence. “You walking miracle, damn beyond hell, Zippy! Those stats! That evolution! Even your new scientific name is beyond mathematical! You are awesome!” He patted Zippy a couple of times before watching to the front and observing the bunny a last time, trying to deduce what happened to him. “So your stats translated to your new shape… or in reverse… Who cares right now. Now to the important matter here… What happened…”

He took a couple of minutes to observe the scene but couldn't bring himself to look at the body for more than a couple of seconds. As described by Zippy (and in the last chapter), the whole village had exploded, with the centre of the blast now in ruins at the gas station. All cables, stones, bricks, anything solid, was now carbonized or turned to dust; all liquids had evaporated. Many remains, yet the body was only pierced or slashed from many angles.

The place was now warm after the hours that Chump remained unconscious, allowing him to get closer for a detailed inspection. Then he caught a glimpse between all the rubble. Among the remains, there was a metal container folded on itself multiple times. A container big enough to be on any truck was buried under all the cement, as indicated by its position of the explosion, but the ground level was above that thing, and one more detail: its lower part was still fixed in the cement below it, now with multiple cracks.

Chump went through all the details until the idea struck him. "It can't be that... Could it? But they usually… No way..." Chump looked at the horizon, moving his hair backward a couple of times, then looked up, took a big breath, and shouted in relief, holding his knees. "Zippy, you are indeed a rabbit! Diggity hole, we found here. This coincidence saved us! But being fair, winning the lottery three times in a row is way more probable than this!"

Zippy smiled. "Thank you! Although if I can be curious, Master… What did you find out?" Zippy tilted his head and rotated his ears a couple of times while observing his owner lift up from his half-sitting position.

"Let’s get back in the car…" As he turned around, he walked beside the big bunny, half lowered his knees to pet his dear companion, and gestured for him to follow. After Chump made sure that Bunny's seat belt was on the back seat with an improvised seat and half pillows, and turned on his car, he continued. "It’s a miracle we were saved, Zippy."

"Why so?" Zippy was a bit taken aback by this announcement, trying to fit well in the seat.

(warning, BIG deduction rant, you can skip the next big paragraph if not so interested in the details.)

“You said the guy stepped towards us a bit before doing that grand fire enhancement, right? He positioned himself on top of the gasoline container at the gas station. It’s not a super secret, but there’s a container where the gasoline is usually deposited so the dispenser can distribute the gasoline. They tend to be buried deep under the station for safety measures. But this is not enough, as the usual liquid form of petroleum wouldn’t make this happen. It would catch on fire, sure; it's petrol. But just that, catching fire. NOT exploding.” As he made a hand gesture, it exploded while riding off into the night towards their destination. “It would have been in its gaseous state and in large quantities. Usually, that’s impossible too. There are intricate ventilation systems in these types of gas stations to prevent anything like this from happening. But being in a village in the middle of nowhere… Perhaps it was too expensive to have those security measures on all the time, and they would usually let it open the hole for a bit to breathe it out. Now, if we combine those factors, the giant would have had to get to hundreds, if not thousands, of degrees to pass that heat straight down to the container. Perhaps the sword pinned down helped to melt through the layers of terrain. And it got to a point that worked out like a gasoline engine usually moves its valves, compressing the metal and the gas against itself and the terrain in high heat and pressure, making it explode. But instead of a small controlled reaction, it was basically a giant fire column that engulfed everything around it… But still, the explosion should have been smaller. Only enough to break the terrain, or perhaps just the gas station… Not the whole village… It may be off this deduction as well, but I think he couldn’t control that much fire by the sudden explosion, and both powers combined or clashed into each other, creating that explosion. Now, with this intense heat, most steel compositions start melting around 700 to 1500ºC Celsius, but it may have been enough to make it more malleable or shape differently in the moment. With the result that this metal trapped and even impaled the giant multiple times in the revolution of material flying around, thanks to the acceleration and barely any forces imposing resistance in that giant turnabout of events. But the chances of that are astronomically and comically low. We were saved by sheer impossibility!”

...

Zippy just stood silent through the whole explanation, nodding, only to add at the end, “Can you… Explain it better, please Master?”

He stood silent for a couple of seconds. “…They were in the wrong time, in the wrong place, in the wrong conditions. They exploded themselves up with Ka-boom material under them. We could say… That he couldn’t keep up with the heat~” Zippy laughed at that joke, and Chump accompanied in that tiny laugh too.

“Oooooh!~ Then you are awesome to know the exact place! And Zippy helped out to bring down the bad guy!~”

But it didn’t take long before a chilling silence overcame the scene. Chump's tone got void, silent, scared. “Zippy… That guy… was not a human. There’s something wrong with all of this…”
