adapting [chapter 1 part 2]

« Poor human… »

A woman was standing next to a floating lionel.

“To be transformed in an unknown species and transported in a world you know nothing about...”

She touched his forehead and his body began to glow. As time passed, his old feature began to show again. He was a human again.

“I’m sorry I won’t be able to help you too much. I’m but a goddess without follower. At most, i’ll be able to give you a longer life, I know it’s not enough for what happened to you but I can’t do much more...”

She patted his head ans smiled.

“At least you’ll be free from your past….”

she let go of him and took a step back.

“I hope you’ll have a long life”

As she said so, a circle appeared under him and he disappeared. The goddess sat on the emptiness and sighed.

“With the energy I have left, I won’t last more then one year…. Well, I met someone at least...”

[On a dense forest]

“Urg, my head hurt...”

I felt like a bastard punched me in the head. I felt pain all over my body. I tried to stand up but I was too weak so I closed my eyes again and fell asleep. I woke up hours later, darkness began to spread around me.

This time I successfully stood up. To my surprise I only had a trouser on. As I looked around, I could only spot trees.

“I need to find somewhere to hide, I don’t know where I am but it would be wise to avoid unnecessary danger. “

I went to the nearest tree and began to climb up. As I reached a branch high enough, I sat on it and thought. I tried to remember how I ended up here and who I was but every time I began to remember something or felt I would remember something, I would have a massive headache.

“I guess it’s not important….for now.”

I closed my eyes again and tried to sleep. I had a strange dream while I was sleeping. A beautiful woman was smiling at me and speaking. I didn’t understand what she was saying but I could feel the kindness in her eyes. When I woke up, I began to miss the tenderness od this woman, it was a strange feeling.

“hum…. I need to make a shelter and build a fire place. Next, I’ll make some hunting tools.”

I began to walk around searching for some branch, liana and rock. Luckily this forest had prety much everything I needed. I had to work on the lianas since they were too short on not strong enough but as the day ended, I had finished the ceiling on the tree. At least, I wouldn’t have to fear about the rain. I just had to do the floor and wall to be okay.

The second day, I began to feel the need to eat and drink. I had to walk around thirty minutes before finding anything to drink and when I finally found a river I realized it was just five minutes from the tree I lived in. I felt stupid when I came back to the tree. I had more luck for the food. Just under the tree, I found some edible berries. On the long run it won’t be enough but until I finish the house it will be enough.

It took me three days to finish the “small” wooden house on the tree. I don’t know why but while I was making it I had the feeling I should make a statue of the woman I saw in my dream. I had no tool to make it right so I made a crude statue but I felt it was enough and put it on an altar inside the house.

After making sure the house was sturdy enough, I began to make weapon to hum. I had no problems when I made the spear but it proved to be more difficult when it came to the bow and arrow. After a lot of mistake, I finally made a rough bow. It was hard to use it but the power was good, as for the arrow, it was hard to work the rock but it only took me three or four arrow to be able to make them good enough.

Sometime, when I was working in the house, I would hear monster passing under it. The first time I saw one of those best was a few days ago. It’s form was gross and disgusting, I never saw something like this…. I think…

Anyway, I saw more and more of them so I had to make my hunting tools stronger and sturdier, if not, I was sure it would break when I would use them. Surprisingly, the rock around there are surprisingly hard.

Finally the day to test them came. Since I didn’t know how strong those beast were, I made sure to stay far from them. The first I met was … I can’t find the word to describe it…

“Well… I guess it’s fine since it has fur”

Since I regained consciousness I was only dressed with a trouser. While I had no problem with that at the beginning, I remarked that the weather was getting colder, not by much, but it meant that it would be winter soon.

I had to wait for hours before the beast went on a good place for me to shoot at it. The string of the bow was really hard to pull but when the arrow flew, it practically disappeared. I looked at the monster as it fell on the ground lifelessly.

“… seriously?”

I went out of my hiding place and approached the corpse. I began to remove the leather and fur and tried to take as much meat as possible. While I was working on the corpse, I understood why it died in one shoot. The arrow was planted on some kind of organ near the head.

“So it’s some kind of weak point.”

The sun was getting low so I had to go back to my house. Since I had nothing to preserve the meat, I smoked it and made bacon. It took me the whole night to smoke everything. I used the time between two preparation to make some “clothes” with the fur.

“Fuuuuuuuu”

It was hard… harder than everything I did so far. I had to use the fur and a needle like rock to sew. It was so damn frustrating. I had to work on the needle like rock to make it thinner and braid the fur to make it longer. I don’t know how much time it took me to finish all the clothes but I’m sure it took me a day.

I stored the food in a hand made box and equipped the clothes I made. It wasn’t really comfortable but it was warm. I made a small device near the river that would clean the water. It’s simple, I took a big leaf put it on a hollow rock with a flat rock on top of it, leaning on the side where I put another hollow rock with a leaf. It sound pretty difficult but it’s very simple in fact. The water will boil when the sun is up, vapor will touch the flat rock, making drops of water falling on the second recipient.

I don’t where I learned that but it sure is useful.

Now that I think about it, I knew how to make a “house”, how to make weapon and how to make clothes… Everything came as if it was natural. Maybe I was already leaving in the wild and got hit on the head? It would explain a lot.

Anyway, it’s calm here, I don’t have to worry about the food, water or house.

“I’ll stay here.”

I don’t know why but I felt the need to speak out loud. Maybe to remember how to speak? Meh…

As time passed I made furniture for the house, I also made it bigger since the tree was big. From time to time, I would go hunting. Every time I would encounter different beast. I don’t know how it is possible. Well, I’m exaggerating a little but there was only a few time were I would meet the cow or bull, I named them like that since they looked alike. While one had a bigger build, the other had two more legs. They looked nothing like cow and bull but I saw them eating grass only so…

One of the most fearsome beast I hunted was a wolf two meters tall. At first I didn’t want to hunt it but the beast was walking near my home and it didn’t look like it wished to leave the area. I tried to kill it with trap but every time it would avoid them. I had no choice but hunting it. At first, I thought, it would rush at me when I went after it but surprisingly the beast avoided me.

After days of hunting, I finally found it’s lair, A small hole in a hill. I stood for days near its hole. The beast knew I was here but it never attacked me. I used this “time out” to observe it.

The beast was smart. Thank to its brown fur, it could hide in the forest and ambush the other monsters. Every time it came back to the hole, it would look at my hiding place. I felt no threat from it so I went back to my house. As the day passed, the prey began to be hard to find. I thought about the wolf and felt bad for it so every day I would give it a bit of my meat.

After a few weeks, I could walk near him without fearing it to attack me. How I know it wouldn’t attack me? I think it was six days after I began to find small prey I never saw before under my house. Those present would appear every night after I came back from the cave.

Those exchange were the beginning of a give and take relationship with the wolf, he would give me prey, I would take out the meat from the prey and give halt to it. As time flew by, the wolf was being more and more familiar with me. I even got to pet it, from the sound it made, it was quite pleased.

One day, it disappeared, I don’t know what happened to it, but I couldn’t find it in the forest. The second day, it didn’t come either. I went to its cave after five days passed, it was strange how much time passed since I last saw it.

I went inside the cave and saw it heavily wounded. I could see its blood on the ground.

It had a tired face, it was dying and I could do nothing. I patted its head and I saw him weakly wag his tail. I felt a bit sad about it. I was about to leave when it grunted. From under him, six small cub came out.

“are you kidding?”

It looked at me and closed its eyes. I went near it and patted it one last time.

“You did well...”

I looked at the cub and then, the cave. I spotted swords, daggers and axes. There was also some skeletons clenching on it with old armors but I paid them no mind. The weapon would be useful for hunting…

I looked at the cub, while I was thinking, the came to my feet and cuddled around me.

“Ha…. Not really a choice here….”

I opened my bag and put them in.

“Look like I won’t be alone anymore.”

The cuteness of those small wolf was too much for me. Even if life is hard in the wild I think I will be able to raise them. When they will be big, I will be able to hunt more effectively.

I brought them to my house and made some round trip between the cave and my house to bring back the weapons, I also skinned the wolf and took the skin of its head to make a hood. It was big enough to cover my head entirely. I have to put it a bit off to see but it would be useful if I face a snow storm.

The cubs were playing around. I looked at them and it look like I have only one male and five females. Look like I wont have to worry about them.
