The Wages of Sin

There was once a very sick man in need of healing. He was nearly bedridden and could barely walk. In his old age, he had become rather cynical and did his best to avoid being social, even to his detriment. His only real human interaction came from his one and only child, his daughter Crystal.

"I don't need a doctor!" He proclaimed. "Dad please, the over-the-counter stuff isn't working anymore. Your health is worsening by the day you need help! ", begged Crystal.

"I don't need help, I don't need a doctor, and I don't need you!", her father shouted.

The sheer sadness on her face coupled with the realization of what he just uttered had finally broken him down. He agreed to see a doctor.

Two days later Crystal drops her father off at the hospital. Immediately he's seated and is waiting to be seen.

One nurse walks in and sees the sick man and immediately his heart is filled with pity. "Hi. What brings you in today?", the nurse asks.  The old man grunts before saying, "If you don't mind I'd like to be left alone, thank you."

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

"Sir really, I could speed up the process..." the nurse was cut short by this statement from the sick man, "I do believe I asked to be left alone."

Looking past the sick man's blatant lack of courtesy, the nurse says, "As you wish sir, but if there's anything I can do for you, you just let me know." Visibly annoyed the sick man remained silent.

A few minutes go by and another nurse finally comes around the corner. "The doctor will see you now." She says calmly and professionally.

The sick man follows her to the room to see the doctor and much to his surprise, the doctor is actually the "nurse" from earlier.

The doctor chuckles and looks at the sick man and says, "What brings you in today?". Furious and feeling belittled the sick man storms out of the hospital in anger, as fast as a sick man could.

Shocked and confused the nurse asks the doctor, "Geez. Must not have been that sick after all?"

The doctor replies, "Oh he was. Whatever his medical illness is he has another one that hurts him way worse."

"And what's that?", the nurse asks.

"Pride."
