Herman wondered what his skillset was. And how the System was able to determine it. Was it based on his personality? His past careers? He was pretty sure he had worked with his hands, maybe had seen some fighting based on how strong his sense of danger was.
He decided to dismiss the prompt and went to go grab his nightgown. Checking for any disturbances around the outside of his cave, Herman saw that the mist had mostly evaporated, replaced by scorching sunlight that was shining down the mountainside. It was a gorgeous sight, and while it had some similarities to Earth, everything was slightly bigger. Slightly alien. The colors were too vibrant, or perhaps he was able to better take in the colors?
Anyway, he didn't see anything that would suggest any animals had been nearby. He was thankful that he hadn't run into anything yet. Herman knew he wasn't in any shape to fight, at least not without taking any serious injuries. He did need to find some food and water soon though. Even if he didn't feel fatigued, hungry, or even thirsty, he knew that the human body couldn't function at full capacity for an extended amount of time. Not without help. For now, he decided to explore the System some more. Hopefully it had something that would make his life a little easier, maybe a map.
After he reentered the cave, appreciating the drop in temperature, Herman pulled up the prompt for classes again, curious of the how the system evaluated him.
Class Description Puppeteer Take fate into your hands. Learn to weave a tapestry with nothing more than your fingertips. Control anything with a flick of the wrist. Soldier A basic, well rounded class. Use a wide variety of weapons and skills to fight. Aritficer A unique class that finds its greatest weapon. are the most complex.
.... Herman stared blankly at his choices for a good five minutes before he let out a frustrated sigh.
"I don't know what I was before what I am assuming was kidnapped, but these all sound horrible! Is this some sort of joke?"
Getting no response, Herman grumbled to himself as he thought over his meager options. He knew that each class did speak to him in their own way, but he also knew that none of those came even close to what he was at the core of his being. He was a... a... a wood cutter? A carver? Did he use an ax?... No! He was a worker of wood! The system had taken the name of his chief class, but it didn't take all his instincts for things that he had done for so many years.
Feeling like he had won a small victory, Herman looked at the descriptions of the classes. They gave very little to show him how they were used. He was confused at the puppeteer class description the most. It seemed so... cheesy. The other descriptions sounded like they were given by a machine while the Puppeteer was made by a kid.
Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.
Herman decided that he was going to choose the class that would make the most sense with his... previous profession. Soldier made him think about the way he felt when he was in the middle of the forest, constantly aware of his surroundings and able to make decisive decisions. While that may provide him the most immediate benefit, he felt that those instincts were… unpolished? Maybe rusty? He wouldn't be able to trust them.
Artificer made him think about crafting, something that he felt like he should be doing. Even now, Herman’s fingers itched to pick up tools and get to work. If he could find a place to make things, this class would probably give him a big advantage. Although the best synergy with this class would probably be metal making, he thought he could still make it work.
He didn't even consider Puppeteer. The Class sounded like an entertainer, and while he knew he loathed conflict, he needed something that would lead to his immediate survival. Plus, the overall feeling of the class just made him shudder.
*Owoooo*
Herman froze in his musings as multiple howls sounded in the distance. He thought he might be able to scare away a pack of wolves if given a chance to prepare, but those howls sounded too high pitch, plus he had no tools with which to give him an edge. He felt helpless as he looked at the classes again. Soldier and Artificer both needed weapons by the looks of it. He had no time to put together a complex machine, and there wasn't even a stick in the cave to use for the Soldier class.
*Owoooooo*
The howls were getting closer now, and it sounded like they were preparing for a hunt. Herman quickly picked up a couple rocks and went to the far wall of the cave. Hopefully they were tracking something other than him. He wouldn't know until they were on him though. And he probably couldn't outrun them, not with him still getting use to his new body.
Herman looked at the classes again, gave a disgusted grunt, then mentally chose Puppeteer. He didn't know why he chose it. Maybe it was the building anxiety messing with his logic. Maybe it was the way the class felt customized. Hopefully it would give him something he could easily use to help defend himself.
Then the pain began. Herman did his best not to scream, mentally berating the system for not giving him some sort of warning before the sharp pain was gone almost as quickly as it arrived.

Right as he frantically read the prompts and dismissed them, he heard the howling again, only this time it was moving further away.
... They weren't after him. And he just chose a class that he himself called cheesy.
