chapter 12 - cooking is a wonderful thing

’this skill, power throw, is this the cause of that strange feeling? If so then it explains a why the javelin could damage the bear so badly while the spear hardly did anything. But why wouldn’t the feeling flow into the spear? the only difference between the javelin and the spear is the length and the stone spearhead, I doubt that is enough of a difference to prevent the flow. Maybe the fact that one is identified by the system as different objects makes the difference? thinking about this is getting me nowhere, besides that I also got quite a few levels. My stab skill actually managed to level up twice even though it was taking hours just to level up before, is it because I was actually stabbing something? is that the difference? then that would explain why the throwing skill has been leveling up faster than stab but throwing slowed down as well, in fact, I haven’t used it since it ranked up yet it managed to level up as well, strange. And mammal mastery as well, that also leveled up twice, is it because Yuki attacked as well? so this skill parallels with Yukis abilities? so if I manage to train this skill then would Yuki be the most amazing rabbit ever? there’s only one way to try that out, I should try and spar with Yuki to see if the skill levels up, but first, lets deal with the bears body’

Quill walks over to the corpse of the bear, takes off his backpack and takes out a sharp rock.

’good thing I left one in here, otherwise i’d have to make a new one’

using the sharp rock Quill skins the bear of the skin. Given the toughness of the bear, Quite a bit of power to skin it making it a very rough job, more than usual, with holes and uneven thickness but the skinning was still successful and the skinning skill managed to level up three times.

’it leveled up quite a bit but I guess that makes sense with how difficult this thing was to skin’

Quill looked at the newly skinned pelt, thinking of what to do with it before looking to the body of bear as his stomach growled.

“guess it’s bear today”

Quickly gathering materials from the surroundings, Quill started a fire. Though it still took a while before he could get the fire started. At this point Yuki was quite used to Quill making fires but was a bit confused as that would be in the night before sleeping. Yuki curiously approached wondering what was going on.

“Yuki? we’re gonna have some food, wait, can you eat meat?”

Yukis head tilts as if not understanding.

’guess there’s only one way to find out, real rabbits can’t but this is a game so who knows? well, mom and dad knows but that’s besides the point, at least there’s plenty of plants around if she can’t eat it’

Quill goes over to the bear and cuts off a chunk of meat off, sticks a stick into it and puts it over the fire, turning it every now and then to make sure it gets cooked. After the meat was properly browned he took it away from the flame and then.

you have learnt the cooking skill

’cooking skill? how come only now I got this? wouldn’t this be one of the first skills learnt? now that i think of it, this is probably only the second time i’ve actually cooked. I’ve mainly been eating berries and wild veg that Yuki would give me’

After finishing his inner monologue, Quill breaks off a bit of the hot meat, slightly burning his hands but not too much, and gives it to Yuki.

“try it, if you can eat it then great, but if you can’t don’t force yourself”

Yuki sniffs the meat for a bit and inspects it before running off to eat some plants.

’full herbivore then, just like a normal rabbit’

Quill eats the piece of meat he was going to give to Yuki and was quite surprised. The meat had much more flavour than the wolf meat. The texture wasn’t rough and it was relatively easy to chew.

’this...this is amazing! is this the effect of the cooking skill? i’ve been missing out! from now on i’m gonna hunt down animals from meals, much better than just eating plants’

Little did Quill know that the cooking skill hardly had any effect on the taste of the meat and the quality of the bear meat may be a factor but because he hasn’t had meat since he first cooked the wolf meat his body has been craving the taste of meat without him realising. Not eating meat for over a week was not something Quill would usually do. Even when eating a salad he had to have ham or chicken with his salad, in fact, he probably set a record for how long he has went without food.

Quill quickly wolfed down the rest of the meat and even cut some more meat off the bear, cooked it and even ate that. yuki just looked at him in disbelief, how could someone eat so much? By the end there was only half of the meat left on the bear.

As Quill relaxed with a bulging stomach he looked towards the pelt of the bear.

’what can I do with the pelt? it was hard to pierce so it probably has more defence than the wolf pelt i’m wearing right now so maybe I can wear the bear pelt like how i’m wearing the wolf pelt and experiment with the wolf pelt? it would be good to make proper clothes instead of wearing an improvised cloak and a leaf, wait, what the hell happened to the bear!’

While being lost in thought, he glanced towards the bear only to be shocked at the sight. What happened to all the meat on the bear? Quill just couldn’t figure this out. In his mind, no matter how hungry he was, there was no way he would be able to eat half of the bear

’there’s only one logical explanation, a wild animal must have came while I was distracted and ate most of the meat, yeah, that has to be it. There’s no way I’ll be able to eat that much on my own’

Quill may be in denial about his new found gluttony.
