Chapter 18

SOME BIRDS BLEED (2)

OAKHART BORDERS

Regis pressed her hands against the wall, feeling the texture of the webs woven together into a sturdy, almost indestructible barrier.

It reminded her of the material Alicia often used in her web magic or the fabric of her dress, but this wall was far stronger ―strong enough to withstand even the force of a volcanic eruption.

Yet, at that moment, Regis couldn’t help but feel more trapped than safe.

“I can’t let Alicia face this alone.” Athena muttered as if still reeling from the shock of being confined here, just like Regis.

There was something undeniably different about Alicia when she had left.

Athena and Regis couldn’t shake the feeling that there had been a faint glint of blue in her eyes. Carrying a hint of sadness in her cold voice, even behind her expressionless face.

One Athena remembered when she saw Sachi for the first time.

Regis, too, felt that same unease. It was the same feeling she had when they faced the dungeon goddess.

The two couldn't shake the sensation that Alicia wanted them to step back and leave her alone —to let her deal with her situation on her own.

“What is her problem?” Regis snapped, frustration rising within her. “She didn’t leave me alone when I wanted to do things on my own, so why can’t I do the same for her?” She repeatedly punched the soft, thread-like walls that surrounded her, the squishy impact only amplified her growing sense of helplessness.

When Regis and Athena arrived at the war scene. Alicia fearing that Homura might target them instead of her, she acted swiftly to protect them. Using her web magic, she encased them inside a large, circular chamber made of her webs.

Despite how fragile the structure appeared, it was surprisingly strong. The threads had a resilience that made the walls virtually soundproof, muting all the noise from the battle raging outside.

The chamber absorbed the shock of every impact, withstanding the force of the magical fight as though it were nothing more than a gentle breeze.

Regis, with all her fighting skills, and Athena, armed with her healing magic, knew they stood little chance if the enemy's entire army descended upon them. Even together, they would have been overwhelmed.

It was only because of Alicia’s quick thinking had given them a moment of safety.

Athena noticed that Regis looked equally frustrated.

But rather than being downcast about not being powerful enough to come out of this.

Regis was angry.

The two were both concerned for Alicia, yet their thoughts were fundamentally different.

“We can’t let Alicia get hurt?” Athena said, her voice steady but filled with worry.

“She’s strong enough to handle anyone. If you really know her, you should have faith in her. Even I don’t like being trapped here, but I don’t doubt that…” for some reason, even Regis did not feel the same this time on leaving Alicia to her own devices even if she had become accustomed to seeing her go and do things on her own.

For some reason, something was different. Regis wasn’t so sure anymore.

“I know how powerful Alicia is. She doesn’t need my help. But we must stop her from killing the prince.”

Regis blinked, her brows furrowing. “Wait, you still want to save that stupid prince who hurt Lucia, enslaved beast humans, and attacked this place? I should have known —humans and their politics, are always the same.”

Athena's eyes hardened, “Believe me or not, I have no political reason. And I, too, believe he deserves punishment. But there’s something else, something I can’t explain. That’s why we need to work together to stop Alicia.”

Regis was a bit taken aback. She could tell Alice was not a delicate princess who would break over in pressure.

For whatever reason, Regis knew that there was some silent secret between Alicia and Alice. She couldn’t explain the reason behind her belief, but she knew —she had to trust in it.

Regis nodded in affirmation.

“We need to stop Alicia. Otherwise, she might end up doing something she’ll deeply regret later.” Athena further explained.

She couldn’t shake the fear that Alicia might be forced to execute her own classmate. By now, Athena was certain that Sachi had realized the prince was one of their reincarnated classmates.

‘Out of all people, it just had to be him. The one who’s been the most unstable of all of the reincarnates lately.’ Athena thought bitterly.

If Alicia killed him, the consequences would extend far beyond her immediate guilt.

Not only would she carry the burden of that decision for the rest of her life, but she might also end up making enemies out of other reincarnates and will be isolated again, cast back into the loneliness she had worked so hard to escape.

“So, what’s the plan? Do you got one?” Regis asked, her tone impatient but eager. She was ready to go along with anything that could get them out of this suffocating enclosure.

“So, what are you going to do? Do you have a plan?” Regis asked as if she was on board with any plan as long as they could get out of this enclosed space.

“I do.” Athena replied calmly, closing her eyes as a soft, golden glow enveloped her hands.

Regis’s eyes widened in amazement. “Is that... light magic?” she asked, astonished. She had seen light magic before, but never anything this radiant, this pure.

“Something more powerful than that.” Athena said cryptically, as the glow intensified.

“Then let’s break out of this jail.” Regis said, a grin spreading across her face.

A fierce, swirling blue energy formed around her hands. It twisted and grew into a powerful tornado-like whirlwind as she pressed it against the wall of webs.

The threads began to unravel, the sturdy barrier loosening under the combined force of Regis’s destructive magic and Athena’s divine energy.

The glow from Athena’s hands seemed to amplify Regis’s power, creating a synergy that quickly tore through the seemingly impenetrable prison.

But as Athena channeled her magic, she noticed something peculiar. Regis’s energy felt fundamentally different from normal magic. That was when the realization struck her.

While normal magic would work to bring the magic particles in harmony to work together for casting magic. Not only Regis's magic was abundant, but it disrupted that very stability in the magic particles and used the destructive energy produced to her own advantage.

Now it made sense why Alicia had chosen to keep Hana and Regis close. Both of them possessed powers that defied the very logic of this world. Abilities so unique and unpredictable that they alone could stand a chance of reaching Alicia or stopping her if she ever lost control.

Even if it worked only for a second to grab her attention, it would have been enough to disrupt Alicia’s power.

Athena chose to keep this discovery to herself for now. She had no intention of distracting Regis or revealing Alicia’s hidden intentions.

With a surge of blue energy, Regis’s enhanced magic drilled a clean, precise hole into the webbed chamber.

The threads disintegrated under the destructive force, leaving a gaping exit in their once-impenetrable prison.

“Not bad.” Regis said, and Athena nodded with a small smile as the two stood confidently amidst the fading whirlwind, with a clear exit hole now visible through the barrier.

KEITH LATIVAN [REINCARNATE HOMURA – CLASS RPESIDENT]

Why is this happening to me? I am scared.

“…Why am I terrified of her?" My voice trembled as fear gripped my chest, making it harder to breathe.

The source of my panic stood right in front of me. My classmate ―Sachi.

The same girl I used to mock for being weak. The same girl we had once even conspired to kill.

I was living the life of a prince. So why has it come to this?

First, that devil Zero took Yumiko. Then that cursed god Erebus and that bastard Kenta stole Goddess Freya from me. They stripped away everything I had.

No one was left. No one.

All I had left was the chance to claw my way back, to get everything I wanted. And to do that, I followed their orders.

So, what if I killed a few demi-humans? So, what if I murdered their families or enslaved them? That was nothing.

Enslaving them was simply a means to an end, a small price to pay for my rise to the top.

It is a given I should use my unique skills to become the most powerful person in this world.

And why shouldn’t I? I’ve been chosen by God to save this world after all!

So why is this freak of a girl trying to kill me? Just for killing a few old grandparents who were already one step away from the grave? Just for attacking her worthless, no-name village?

It doesn’t make sense! None of this does!

“No matter what you do, you are still beneath me!” I shouted at the top of my lungs.

I don’t know where this sudden surge of courage came from. Maybe it was desperation, maybe denial.

But in the end, it didn’t matter —it wasn’t working. Sachi wasn’t intimidated.

The girl who once flinched at the slightest glare now carried herself forward with an unshakable, expressionless demeanor. Her presence felt cold, heavy, and suffocating.

Her sword...

That’s when I noticed it.

“You cannot kill me,” I said, my voice faltering slightly as I grasped at what little leverage I thought I had.

Sachi now going by her other name Alicia; stopped. Right in front of me.

Her head remained high, but her eyes—those black, pitiless eyes—lowered ever so slightly, just enough to glance down at me.

It wasn’t fear. It wasn’t hesitation. It was as if she were staring at something beneath her notice, like dirt crushed beneath her feet.

“Didn’t you hear me? You cannot kill me! You’re still that weak little girl.” I spat blood on the ground, desperate to provoke her.

Desperate to see something crack in her cold facade.

“Even if you have that special sword or powerful magic, you can’t use it, can you? That’s why it’s still in its sheath!”

My words hung in the air, unanswered. Was it working? Why wasn’t she saying anything?

“You should know by now.” I continued. “I’m also one of the chosen ones, just like you! You can’t do anything to me because your contract goddess is weak. Once I get out of here and reclaim my goddess, I’ll come back for you. In fact, I’ll bring all our classmates with me. Wouldn’t you like to meet them? I’ll tell them everything you did, and we’ll see who they side with!”

I looked up, hoping—praying—for a reaction. Anything to prove that my words were reaching her.

But all I saw again were her cold, black pupils staring down at me, as if I wasn’t worth a single ounce of her attention.

Why wasn’t she taking out her sword? Could she really not use it? Maybe I was right.

Maybe she was just a slow person blessed with unfairly brilliant magic and didn’t learn to wield a sword. Someone else in my class group could easily handle her.

Or if not, I’d ask for Zero’s help. After all, she is in his way too.

“I bet you thought defeating me would be like some fairytale!” I sneered. “That I’d beg for forgiveness and become your obedient little subordinate? Well, think again! I’ll come back and destroy everyone you care about! I’ll take that pathetic demi-human girl you’re so eager to protect, too!”

I waited, my words ringing out in the suffocating silence.

Alicia’s sword remained sheathed, her gaze unchanged. My chest tightened as dread began to creep in.

Why wasn’t she reacting? Why wasn’t she saying anything?

For the first time, I wondered if I had made a mistake.

“Say something. Go on, kill me if you can!” I laughed. I laughed, louder and more brazenly than I should have.

I didn’t know if I was trying to convince her—or myself. Maybe fear had already driven me halfway to madness.

But then, Alicia’s cold, unyielding voice cut through my hysteria.

“Homura,” Alicia called, her tone devoid of emotion, “let me give you one word of advice—shut-up. It’s over.”

Her glowing blue eyes burned brighter, casting an unearthly, almost haunting light across her face.

It was no longer the face of the timid girl I once knew. It was something far more terrifying. And in that moment, my defiance crumbled.

And that’s when it hit me: running wouldn’t save me. It never would’ve.

She was in control. She always had been.

“Wait! Listen to me!” My voice cracked, my words coming out in a rush. “It was an honest mistake! I won’t do it again! It wasn’t my fault—they made me!”

Alicia paused.

My heart raced. Was that it? Was she hesitating? Of course.

Deep down, Sachi was still soft-hearted. That much I was sure of. She always had been.

I smirked, leaning into the silence. “See? I knew you’d understand—”

If I played my cards right, if I showed her just enough regret, she’d relent.

But then, Alicia spoke again.

“You’re a degenerate. Trash.”

The words hit me like a hammer, shattering whatever confidence I had scraped together.

“Who are you calling trash?” I barked, trying to regain some control.

Alicia’s lips curled into a faint, mocking smile.

“Tell me,” she said, “What are you going to cry about next? How you lost your hand? Your leg?”

Alicia leaned in closer, her glowing eyes boring into mine.

“Or your neck?”

“Just stay away from me. How can you try to hurt me, your own classmate? If my skill would have worked on you, you would be begging me for my affection right now!”

Alicia tilted her head, her expression blank but her voice icy. “Does that same logic apply to all the people who followed you here to attack us?”

“Of course. They all would have given their life to protect me at the drop of a hat. Everyone loves me, worships me! They’re bound to follow my commands and do whatever I say!”

Alicia’s lips curled into a cold, chilling smile. “I see... that does sound like a fun game. Then let’s make you do just that.”

“What—what do you mean by that?”

“Let’s find out just how loyal these all soldiers really were to you.” Alicia said in her calm tone yet laced with something... twisted.

Her eyes glimmered with unsettling excitement, as though she were savoring the thought of this so-called game.

“You are insane. You already killed all of them.” I didn’t understand at all what she was talking about. But her way of having fun and her being serious about it scared me even more.

“True.” Alicia admitted, her voice light, almost playful. “But they can always come back? Don’t you want to see your loyal followers again, vying for your affection?”

Alicia giggled like a small child playing with her toys —but that felt entirely wrong in this moment.

Something in my gut twisted. I needed to get away. Now.

I didn’t wait to hear what she would do next. I turned and ran, pushing my legs harder than I ever had before. My heart pounded, and every nerve in my body screamed to get as far away from her as possible.

But Alicia didn’t chase me.

When I glanced back, I saw her standing there, motionless. That eerie, precise smile hadn’t left her face.

Relief almost set in —until I felt something wet soaking into my boots.

I looked down, and my feet were sinking into what looked like black mud. But it wasn’t mud. It wasn’t even tangible.

Like it existed and yet didn’t. This dark, pitch-black substance felt ominous, as if it shouldn’t have existed in the mortal plain.

And then I remembered.

I’d seen this before—the day Zero appeared, the same black miasma oozing off him.

“How can you be using black miasma if you’re using divine magic?” I muttered, as the realization dawned.

The black miasma spread faster than I could comprehend, swallowing the ground around me in an instant. From its depths, shadowy figures began to rise—one by one.

The silhouettes were hazy but unmistakable. They were the soldiers, the mercenaries, the villagers I had charmed with my unique skill to fight for me.

Their bodies, or what was left of them, were drenched in the black miasma, taking on grotesque, shadowy forms as they clawed their way toward me.

“Prince…” I heard.

“Oh, prince…” I heard another moan.

“Follow the prince…”

Their voices were distorted, warped into something inhuman, and yet I could feel the echoes of their pain, their anger, their fear.

“No! Stay away!” I screamed, stumbling back. But they were faster.

They swarmed me, their shadowy forms gliding across the blackened ground. I tried to run, but their cold, phantom hands caught hold of me—grasping at my legs, my arms, pulling me down into the black swamp.

Every touch sent a jolt of terror coursing through me. I felt their last moments—the fear and agony they’d experienced as they died, all while under my control.

“Stop it!” I shrieked. “I can’t take it anymore! Go… go away!”

“My prince,” one shadow whispered, its voice eerily familiar. It was my butler, now twisted into this monstrosity.

“Give us your orders,” it said as it tried to grab my hand.

“Stay dead! Just stay dead! Don’t come near me!”

REGIS ASCALON

When Alice and I emerged from the encapsulation, we braced ourselves. We thought we’d face an army of soldiers waiting to ambush us.

But the battlefield was eerily quiet.

There was nothing.

My foot sank into something cold and wet, and I froze. Looking down, I saw a black pool rippling beneath me.

It wasn’t water. It wasn’t mud. It was... something else.

Suddenly, a wave of weakness swept over me, like my very energy was being drained.

“What... what is this?” I muttered under my breath.

I turned to Alice, and she looked pale, her legs trembling as if she would collapse at any moment.

“I’m fine.” Alice said quickly, though her voice wavered.

Her gaze fixated on the black pool, her surprised expression felt like she knew exactly what it was.

That’s when I saw it —the scene ahead.

Alicia stood amidst the black miasma. The shadows —the ones shaped like people, circled and chased after that despicable prince.

“Alicia, what are you doing?” I shouted, rushing to her side.

She didn’t respond, didn’t even acknowledge me. Her icy blue eyes were locked on the prince, who was stumbling and shrieking in terror, the shadows closing in on him like hunters toying with their prey.

When I reached her, I placed a hand on her shoulder.

Her reaction was immediate.

Alicia turned to me, and for a moment, I felt a chill run down my spine. Her cold, piercing blue eyes locked onto mine, targeting me.

“Alicia what are you doing?” I repeated myself.

“Nothing, Regis.” Alicia said, her voice calm. “Just having fun.”

I glanced around. The soldiers, the mercenaries —everyone who had been here moments ago was gone. All that remained was Alicia and that pitiful prince screaming in the distance.

“Alicia.” I said hesitantly, “Are you going to kill him?”

I felt uneasy even asking. He deserved every punishment imaginable, but watching it unfold like this was... horrifying.

Like witnessing the worst nightmare come to life.

Alicia didn’t answer right away. Instead, she chuckled.

“If I tell that now, it wouldn’t be any fun.”

“What are you saying?”

“Just kidding.” Alicia replied, her tone still light. “You know I don’t like pain. If I wanted to kill him, I’d have done it already in one clean strike.”

Alicia’s gaze sharpened, and her smile faded. “But,” she continued, “I remember telling both of you to stay out of this.”

Alicia’s words hit like a warning —as if unknowingly we had somehow crossed her.

OAKHART BORDERS

“Alicia, stop this. We need to talk to him and find out why he did this.” Athena called out.

“Alice you are here as well.” Alicia said coolly. “You think I didn’t try? But I can’t continue talking with this trash any longer.”

Even though Athena and Regis were speaking to Alicia, something felt... off. It was her voice, her body —but it felt like they were addressing a stranger, not the person they knew.

Athena took a deep breath and stepped forward, placing herself midway between Alicia and the cowering prince.

“Then, if not him... maybe she could answer us.” Athena said calling out Homura this time.

“You’re Freya’s contractee.” Athena continued. “Where is she? I want to talk to her.”

Alicia hesitated. Her fingers twitched, and with an exasperated sigh, she finally snapped her fingers undoing the black miasma magic.

The transformation was instantaneous.

The shadowy black ghosts dissolved into fine powder, their eerie forms vanishing as if they’d never existed. The black mud beneath receded as if sucked back into the depth of hell, where it came from.

“So, you’re this bitch’s goddess.” the prince sneered with contempt as he scrambled to his feet. “You lied to all of us, didn’t you? You claimed your contractee was missing. Were you just laughing behind our backs this entire time?”

“Its not true.” Athena replied.

Alicia remained silent.

The prince, emboldened by the lifted magic, continued. “No, wait—you must have been helping her all along, weren’t you? Hiding her while giving her access to strange weapons and forbidden magic. Tell me, what did you use? Potions? Or did you conduct experiments on her? That girl must’ve been willing to stoop to anything for power. After all, how will you explain all of this? She couldn’t possibly be stronger than me otherwise!” Homura shouted.

“What are you talking about?” Athena felt frustrated because of Homura’s baseless accusations.

It was only now, as the gravity of the situation settled over, that Athena seemed to realize her foolish decision of trying to reason with someone like him.

“Just tell me, where is Freya? I can’t sense her anywhere close. Is she no longer participating in this war? After all, she’s your partner.” Athena demanded. “Or did something happen to her?” Athena did not wish for the latter at all, but she had an uncanny inkling.

At the mention of Freya, Homura’s face twisted in anguish. His lips trembled, and his eyes welled with tears.

“Freya… Freya… they took her. They took her from me.” Homura cried.

“Who took her? Why didn’t you tell the rest of your classmates? You should’ve warned them. Who did this to you?” Athena asked.

Homura’s body stiffened, and for a moment, he hesitated. “Who did this... It was the devil himself… and those working with him. I can’t say their names. If I do they’ll kill Freya.”

“Why did they take her? What could they possibly gain by doing this?” Athena inquired further.

“That’s right.” Homura muttered, more to himself than to Athena. “Why did they take her?” His eyes darted back and forth as fragments of memories pieced themselves together.

And then it hit him.

He recalled Erebus’s cryptic words, the mention of needing a god’s power.

“Yes… that’s it. They need a god.” Homura said. His tear-streaked face now carried a twisted grin. “Then someone just has to replace Freya. If I bring them someone else, they’ll give her back. I won’t have to follow their orders anymore.”

“Are you... alright?” Athena asked cautiously.

Homura’s grin widened with a manic gleam in his eyes. “I’m not sick in the head, if that’s what you’re asking. No, it’s all very clear now. I know exactly what I have to do.”

“What are you talking about?” Athena stepped back slightly, alarmed.

“So, dear goddess…” Homura’s voice dropped to a menacing whisper. “Why don’t you come with me and help your fellow goddess friend? Give yourself up as my sacrifice.”

Athena’s breath caught in her throat, not knowing what Homura’s next move was.

“That’s right,” Homura continued, his tone tinged with giddy desperation. “If I have you, then…”

Homura still hadn’t used his last resort. A spell Freya had given him to use for life-threatening situations. There was no reason for him to delay using it any longer.

“―Starlight Allure”. He spelled.

And now, with no hesitation, Homura finally activated the strongest magic spell of his unique skill.

The air around Homura warped and crackled as a surge of raw magic erupted from his body. The light radiating from him was blinding, and the land around him seemed to turn to ash, scorched by the overwhelming power.

But there was a price to pay for accessing this immense energy. Homura’s own life force was burning away at an alarming rate. His limbs began to shrivel, and his face grew pale as if his very essence was being drained.

Athena squeezed her eyes shut instinctively. Regis, too, couldn’t bear to witness it, her vision clouded and her body became stiff as she braced for whatever would come next.

But Alicia noticed where this tremendous energy was being transmitted.

Her gaze shot upwards, locking onto the source of the gathering power as all her spidey senses tingled at the same time.

“Regis!” Alicia shouted, quickly pushing Regis aside.

Regis stumbled, hitting the ground, but before she could react, Alicia raised a protective blue barrier around her, shielding her from what was about to come.

From above, a line of intense light, like falling stars, streaked across the sky.

But these were no ordinary shooting stars. They weren’t physical matter that could be deflected or magic that could be countered.

They were pure, cosmic radiation, a lethal convergence of celestial power, traveling at the speed of light, hurtled down to earth, searing through the air and igniting the atmosphere itself.

The land around Alicia was engulfed in a blinding aura, like a multicolor aurora descending on earth.

The mesmerizing light packed intense heat burning through everything in its path.

“Alicia!” Athena screamed, helplessly watching as the blinding light swallowed the space around them.

"You are coming with me." Homura’s voice rang out, as he closed in on Athena.

“No!” Athena cried out, resisting as best as she could.

Homura’s twisted grin returned.

“I’m sure a little wound in your belly won’t be enough to kill a goddess.” He taunted, raising his divine-energy laced sword to strike. “Blame her for making me do this.”

As the tip of his blade neared Athena’s chest, poised to pierce her heart, his smirk widened, carrying a twisted sense of satisfaction.

But then…

Before his blade could deliver the fatal blow, a flash of black steel cut through the air.

Homura’s movements stopped abruptly, his eyes widening in shock. A sharp, wet sound filled the air as a black blade pierced straight through his chest, clean.

Blood gurgled from his mouth, spilling over his lips as his knees buckled. His gaze shifted downward to the blade lodged in his heart, and then to the figure standing behind Athena.

It was Alicia. Her hands gripping the hilt of the sword, devoid of hesitation or mercy. She had moved faster than even Homura could react, positioning her black sword between Athena and her attacker in a single, fluid motion.

But Alicia was not one who came out of Homura’s attack unharmed. Her own belly was bleeding profusely turning the white fabric of her dress red.

Because of the unstable nature of cosmic radiation, even Alicia’s healing was not able to keep up with the damage.

Homura wanted to speak, to curse her, or to cry out his final words… but the blood filling his lungs silenced him. His vision blurred, the light around him fading as he fell to his knees in silence.

The black sword, still lodged deep within Homura’s chest. The natural stigma of the black sword flared to life, its dark, consuming tendrils reaching to devour Homura’s soul.

A sudden surge of energy shattered the air. A vast pillar of light erupted from the ground, shooting up toward the heavens. From some unknown depth of the earth, a golden energy streaked across the sky.

Engulfing Homura in a radiant embrace Alicia pulled back her sword.

The golden light spiraled and twisted, swirling before solidifying into a human form.

A figure emerged, with bright eyes, and her long, flowing hair cascaded like liquid gold around her.

Athena’s heart skipped a beat as realization struck. "Freya." she whispered.

The form of Freya gave a soft nod as if giving a silent confirmation of her existence.

Her gaze, however, was fixed on Alicia—her sword still raised. And her partner’s lifeless body growing cold at her feet.

A profound sadness filled Freya’s ethereal face as she surveyed the scene, her eyes flickering with sorrow.

Without a word, Freya’s manifested consciousness reached out, her hands gently cradling Homura’s head in her arms, pulling him close. As if she was not trying to interact with his body, but picking his soul.

Freya gave a satisfied glance at the two, as though thanking them for freeing him from her miserable state. It was as if she had silently known all the wrongs he had committed to try and get her back.

The pillar of light shimmered, and as if guided by some divine force, it carried them both upwards, spiraling through the light.

It felt as though Homura’s very soul was being lifted, whisked away to a higher realm —back to the heavens from which Freya herself had descended.
