Chapter 1: A Bad Beginning

–The scan on your iris and vein has determined that you are an unregistered user. Do you want to create a new account?–

Looking around Keith was shocked to see that he was in a white room with nothing around. Calling out again the voice asked

–Do you want to create a new account?–

Thinking quickly Keith answered, “Yes, I would.”

–Congratulations you are the 3rd player to register an account with Royal Road. For being within the first ten players, on reaching level five you will receive one skill previously selected by the game’s creator along with 5 extra points which can be added onto any of the basic beginner stats. Please select the name of your avatar–

Thinking about the fact that practically every hardcore gamer in Korea basically logged on at the exact same time; the fact that he was within the first 10 to register only one word came to mind. “Random… ”

–Random name will be generated upon choice of gender. Please select gender from Male, Female, or Neutral–

Looking around Keith was trying to figure out what just happened. ‘Wait what just happened? I didn’t say anything did I?’ In the background the computer voice repeated its statement. Thinking back on it, Keith could only object, “Random is a choice? Why would anyone choose that?”

–Random Gender has been generated. Neutral gender has been selected… Generating avatar name... Avatar name now generated. Royal Road has forty-nine playable races. You may select your race from the primary twenty-nine with all available sub-races.–

‘What the F*** Just happened? At the very last the computer should be smart enough to know when not to choose the player’s character for them. All I had said was one word!’

“To hell this with this random stuff!”

–Random race has been generated. The Pixie race has been selected. You may alter your appearance as you wish.–

“Hey computer! Stop doing as you wish! I didn’t want anything like that. I want an Admin!”

–Calling Admin. Please wait.–

After about three minutes a hologram of the Admin popped up in the room.

“Yes hello. Lets see here... Oh hello Pep-Ri Replica! Interesting name choice that. We weren’t expecting any calls this early in game, so you’ll have to excuse us for the wait.”

Looking up at the hologram, Keith really didn’t want to see the charmingly nice face in front of him. “Yeah, the computer started choosing everything for me before I got the chance to speak, what’s with the glitch?”

Looking back on the recording from Keith’s start up the Admin started laughing. Looking back at Keith, he stopped laughing immediately seeing Keith’s death glare.

“I’m sorry sir, but the computer was only reacting to you repeating the word random. There is really nothing I can do other than erase your iris scan from the system. In that case you would have to restart your Capsule and re-enter the game. Normally, I would suggest this to be your course of action, but as you’re the third person to register, you would cause an error in the system. The Computer would have to reconfigure who was registered as the first one hundred players. The first ten players all received some kind of benefit whether it was reand exclusive skill or wish while the rest received extra stat points. As quite a few are already playing. It would be a hassle.”

Looking up at the smiling hologram, Keith could only sneer. “What do you mean it would cause a problem! What about the fact that I’m a pixie! I wanted to be an Elf!!! Never mind the stupid name or gender, at least give me that!”

“I’m sorry sir but there is very little I can do for you. Let me talk it over here with my boss on this end though, maybe I can figure something out.” After about ten minutes of waiting Keith was ready to destroy the infernal speakers blazing out the annoying elevator music by Kid Ink.

You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.

“??? I know we ain't really spoke well, ??? But it's a private party later at my hotel room. ??? You should come by a little later, If you down girl meet me at the elevator, Then we going up Going up, ?? going up, going up ??? Going up, going up ?? Then we going up Going up, going up,????? going up Going up, going up.??? ” <(sorry I just had to find the lyrics on Google)

Not only was this a waste of his time, but he was also missing out on being one of the first gamers to start their Journey in the actual game. Flickering back on, the hologram was now of a middle aged man. Turning to look at Keith, he began to speak.

“I’m sorry sir. I know this is an inconvenience to you as you can’t reset your character, but keep in mind. At level five you will be receiving a unique skill that has been adjusted to fit your circumstances. To say the least, this skill is going to be a tough one to level, in fact for the first couple of levels, you shouldn't even be able to use it to it’s full extent. The one thing amazing about this skill is that at least for the first couple of in game years no one should be able to learn it besides you without extensive exploring. With the permission of the game’s creator, we were able to switch out the predetermined skill with this one, on the condition that you wait till after a couple of months of game play before you decide on deleting your account. Is this acceptable?”

Standing there with his mouth wide open Keith could only nod. I can’t believe it I can get an even better skill straight off the bat than most people will have even after playing for a long time! There is no way I can refuse this!

Noting that the offer had been accepted the Admin disappeared. Leaving Keith to complete his character.

The computer kicked back in stating, –You may alter your appearance however you may wish.–

Appearing before him, a small fairy like creature with no wings appeared. So small in fact, It didn't even reach his knee.

Widening his eyes in outrage, Keith let out some explicit language until he felt calm enough to continue. Letting himself look closer at his character Keith finally realized why the gender neutral was, well… neutral. It was way too feminine to be a male, yet not quite cute. Sort of almost a pretty boy. To say the least, it was weird looking at himself reflected in this way. Thinking about it, Keith had the hair grow longer, his eyes and hair turned to silver, and raised his character to get about chest high. Then he adjusted his age to be only a couple years older than it previously had appeared..

Looking at his character now he looked like a thin and short teen. It was no longer the child it had appeared to be, yet not quite an adult either either. Definitely an advantage if he wanted to find a party of females to travel with. (To say the least, Keith constantly looks back on this moment and wishes he had just gone and cut all his characters hair off. While making his character more masculine)

–Your account has been activated. Your stats and class shall be determined while you are playing Royal Road–

“I know this, thank you…” Impatient to join the game, Keith was losing his patience.

–Select a city and kingdom you want to start.–

This time Keith really didn’t care where it was. “Let’s actually go random this time.”

–The city of Artists Rhodium has been selected. Welcome to Royal Road–

Sitting back and thinking the tutorial would only take a few minutes, Keith began to relax.
