A Giant Problem
Chapter 5: Walking Catastrophe

Chapter 5: Walking Catastrophe

As a brand new dawn heralds the start of another day, nobody in Read Peak village managed to get any rest.

The news about the abnormal giant had spread across the townsfolk like wildfire, and as expected, panic ensued.

The local guard alongside the local hunters had to step in to prevent a riot.

Due to the gravity of the situation, the mayor called for a meeting in the town center to discuss what should be done moving forward.

“This is something that could affect all of us, so i believed everyone should be included in this matter” The mayor said standing on his podium. “The news you´ve heard are true, there is a giant in the forest that could pose a threat to our home. The problem is that said giant is half a day from here and we don´t know if it's hostile or peaceful, so we can´t just attack it as we might earn his rightful anger if it were indeed peaceful.” The mayor paused to let his people digest what he just said for a moment.

“We don´t know much about it, only that it is abnormally large even amongst giants, it has monstrous might, and most importantly, one of our hunters said he saw how it fell out of a tear in the sky”

After he said that, the crowd began to whisper among themselves.

“I know this seems like a bad omen or punishment from the gods, but we don't have enough information to be sure. So I propose that we wait and see what this being can do”

“I've already sent a runner to the nearest city but that will take days to get there and even more to get back so we have to wait. Loret has volunteered himself to keep an eye on the giant and then report back to us, meanwhile the guard will be fortifying the town. All I ask from you is that you try to remain calm and maintain order in these coming days.”

With that he concluded his speech, even though he could see the lack of confidence on the face of his people, he did almost everything he could, and now they could only wait.

Loret was now observing the giant beast, trying to understand anything it could by just looking at it.

Crouching at the edge of the forest while in his ancestral form he observed how the creature went about his day, although it didn't do much the things it did confirmed many of his suspicions.

Firstly, the creature was obviously intelligent, or at least it had the best innate instinct ever (which he doubted), although crude and inefficient it knew how to make a fire…using the “unburnable” Adamantite trees.

Leaving that terrifying fact aside, it seemed to speak a language, or at least that's what he thought the occasional mumble or shout were, he couldn't discern a pattern or logic to it, so he couldn't even hope to try and understand what it was saying, if it was saying anything at all.

Secondly, he deduced that the creature wasn't necessarily aggressive, rather it looked like it acted with conscious thought, for example: it started gathering logs, putting them of the ground, forming a pile, then he took a few of the smaller pieces of wood and set them on…fire…using a flame in his…hand

Thirdly, the thing COULD USE MAGIC SOMEHOW

Normally this wouldn't be such an issue, basically every single being could use it if they had even the smallest affinity to it and were trained properly.

Magic comes from the air, it then enters into the lungs as raw energy, this energy is called Aura, and its main use is to reinforce the body of its user, simply Enhancers, this is the most common type of mage since not everyone can handle the requirements for further types of mages.

Once the wild energy has entered the body, passes through the lungs and becomes Aura, it then goes through the heart to become Mana, a more stable and tangible type of energy that can be projected outside of the body of its user, this powerfully energy is stored in the blood of its user, where it can be called at a moment's notice to be used, being able to do almost anything, so long as you had sufficient energy.

These types of mages are called Casters, and for every 10 Enhancers, there is 1 Caster.

The reason as to why there are so few of them is because the process of processing Aura into mana is incredibly taxing on the heart, making the Casters life shorter in the long run. The only exception to this are those born with a heart that is unnaturally adept at converting Aura into Mana, these are called (with a very original name) “Mana-Hearts”.

And for every ten thousand or so people one was born with this condition, but even then, not every single one of them became a powerful Caster, since besides this single, but important advantage, it had no effect on their daily life.

Now, having said all of that, the problem was that giants were unable to project magic due to the fact that they lacked hearts, nobody really knew how they stayed alive, but since it's widely known that they can't use it (even crudely), and the few times a giant was slain they didn't have one where it should have.

And many, many people thanked whatever god they believed in that giants were unable to project it outside their body. Since giants were, well, giant, that meant their colossal bodies could store an enormous amount of mana. A normal Caster with enough experience and preparation could single handedly wipe a city off the map, and that's with only his own reservoirs.

Now imagine a giant, a being that had almost 100 times the amount of Mana, and had no reason to limit itself thanks to their lower intelligence and we would have walking catastrophes that could rival dragons in terms of destruction.

AND THIS ONE HAD INTELLIGENCE,THE ABILITY TO PROJECT MAGIC AND APPARENTLY IT COULD REINFORCE HIS BODY WITH AURA.

The only “upside” to this whole was that maybe it could be reasoned with, but that was a big maybe.

Loret was frustrated, but he could only watch and learn as much as possible before doing anything else.

---------------------------

Unbeknownst to everyone, far away from the village, deep in the mountains, an ancient being started to wake from his deep slumber. It wasn't his time yet, but the world would tremble and mortals would cower before him once again.

For he is the subject of legends, but only of tragedy and destruction.

He had to be patient, the time was nigh, but if he appeared earlier than planned all of his effort would be wasted and he would be forced to sleep once again.

But a being like him had patience to spare, he could wait a little while longer, if that's all it took to rid himself of his bindings he would swallow his pride, and stay put.

And once he did, he would bring destruction across the land as revenge for imprisoning for so long. When that's done, he would direct his attention to the ones that confined him here, yes, not even the gods would be safe from his fury.

It didn't matter how long it would take, how many lives I took him, he would make them pay for what they did to him and his kind.

“...my chains are weakening, your followers are forgetting, and your final sunset is drawing closer…when the time finally comes no one will save you from your worst mistake…”

And with those words, the beast went back to slumber, waiting, until he could enact his final performance.
