A Fairy Tale (Season 1)
8. The Living Specimen

8. The Living Specimen

Ethan’s makeshift lab was buzzing with glowing concoctions and the faint shimmer of sunlight streaming through the windows. His small hands carefully dripped one chemical into another, his face tense with focus.

Ethan (whispering nervously): "Please don’t explode this time..."

He cautiously shook the mixture, but as the swirling contents settled, he realized it wasn’t enough. The liquid needed to be shaken much faster than he could manage alone.

Ethan : "Hmm... Time to go to Aria."

Leaving the lab behind, Ethan wandered through the grand fairy castle, his tiny footsteps echoing against the grand marble floors. On his way, he spotted Mira in the main hall, fluffing and rearranging the huge cushions and sofas that the fairies had left scattered last night. Her back was turned as she adjusted a pillow, but the moment she heard Ethan's voice, she lit up like the sky at dawn.

Ethan (happily): "Miraa!!"

Mira spun around, her face breaking into a wide smile, her eyes sparkling with affection. She immediately knelt down to his height, her arms wide open.

Mira (in her soft, sweet voice): "My sweet mushroom... come, come, come!"

Without hesitation, Ethan rushed into her arms, giggling as she wrapped him up in a soft, warm hug. Mira didn’t waste a second and began peppering his face with her signature hard, exaggerated kisses, each one accompanied by a loud “Mwah!” that echoed through the hall.

Mira (between kisses, laughing): "Mwah! Mwah! Mwah! Oh, I missed your sweet little face!"

Ethan giggled uncontrollably, his small hands pushing playfully at her as he squirmed.

Ethan (laughing): "Mira! You always kiss me like this! But I love it!"

Mira’s heart melted at his words, her face softening even more. She pulled him even closer and showered him with another flurry of affectionate kisses.

Mira (grinning): "Well, if my mushroom loves it, then I’ll give you more!"

With that, she dramatically kissed him again and again, each “Mwah!” sound louder than the last, making Ethan laugh so hard he had to catch his breath.

Ethan (laughing): "Mira! Stop! It tickles!"

Mira (mocking a pout, continuing to kiss him): "Oh no, no, no, my mushroom! You can’t escape these kisses. It’s been a whole few phls since I’ve seen you! Mwah!"

After a moment of playful chaos, Mira leaned back, letting Ethan catch his breath while still holding him close.

Mira (sweetly): "Alright, my little mushroom. What brings you running into my arms? Do you need anything?"

Ethan, still smiling brightly, nodded.

Ethan: "I was looking for Aria. Have you seen her?"

Mira tilted her head thoughtfully, as if she were considering keeping that information secret for a while longer. But then, with a twinkle in her eyes, she leaned in closer.

Mira (grinning): "I could tell you where Aria is... but first, I think I deserve some of those cute little kisses of yours."

Ethan giggled at her playful tone. His small hands reached up and cupped her big, soft face, his tiny fingers barely able to cover her cheeks. He leaned in and, just like Mira, he kissed her with exaggerated “Mwah!” sounds on her lips.

Ethan (in his sweet voice, imitating her): "Mwah! Mwah! Just like you do!"

Mira’s heart melted completely, her cheeks glowing from both his kisses and her overwhelming affection.

Mira (melting): "Aww, you’re too precious! Thank you, my little baby."

She hugged him tighter for a moment, clearly savoring the moment before gently setting him down again.

Mira (smiling warmly): "Now that you’ve given me those wonderful kisses, I’ll tell you—Aria is out near the waterfall, behind the castle."

Ethan’s eyes lit up.

Ethan: "Thanks, Mira!"

Mira (whispering to herself): "That mushroom is going to melt all our hearts one day..."

Ethan rushed through the grand archway leading to the open area behind the castle. His small feet patted against the ground as he approached the shimmering waterfall, where he knew Aria would be practicing. The air was filled with the sound of rushing water, but something else caught his attention—an occasional burst of wind, a blur in the waterfall, almost impossible to track with the naked eye.

Ethan (looking around, a little confused): "Aria?"

He stepped closer, squinting at the blur of motion within the waterfall. Aria was moving at supersonic speed, zipping through the falling droplets, dodging each one with precision. It was her unique form of training—trying to stay completely dry while passing through the cascade at impossible speeds. To Ethan, she was practically invisible, a mere distortion in the air.

Ethan (calling again, a bit louder): "Ariaaa!"

But no matter how loud he shouted, Aria couldn’t hear him—she was moving faster than sound itself. Ethan, being the curious and clever little boy that he was, paused to think. He knew sound wouldn’t reach her at those speeds, but light? Light travels faster than anything.

His eyes fell on a small mirror shard lying near the ground, half-buried in the dirt. He picked it up and angled it just right, catching the sunlight and reflecting it toward the waterfall. The beam of light bounced off the water, creating a glinting flash within the cascade.

Just as he’d hoped, Aria noticed the light. She skidded to a halt, appearing suddenly from within the waterfall, her hair slightly damp but not a drop on her body. Gasping for breath, she collapsed onto the ground next to Ethan, panting heavily with a satisfied smile.

Aria (panting, between breaths): "That... was really... smart of you, Flash."

Ethan beamed with pride, kneeling beside her.

Ethan (grinning): "I knew you must be zipping faster than sound, so you couldn’t hear me."

Aria (smiling, ruffling his hair): "Aren’t you my smartest little Flash?"

She leaned down and planted a quick kiss on his cheek, making Ethan blush a little. His smile grew even wider.

Ethan (in awe): "But Aria... you’re really amazing! The way you move so fast through the waterfall, dodging every single drop—like you're dancing in the air. How do you even do that without getting soaked?"

Aria had finally caught her breath, and she grinned proudly, her cheeks glowing with the compliments.

Aria (playfully squeezing his cheeks): "Aww, thank you, my little Flash. You're the smart one for figuring out how to get my attention! Come here, you."

She pulled him into a warm embrace, Ethan wrapping his small arms around her neck as she kissed his face repeatedly. But Ethan, always the curious one, pulled back slightly, his face serious, a small pout forming.

Ethan: "But Aria... please tell me, what’s it really like when you run faster than sound? Last time, you said it’s all quiet, but I bet there’s more to it than just silence."

Aria chuckled, amused by his unending curiosity. She kissed him again, this time on his forehead, and settled back on the grass, leaning on her elbows.

Aria (with a smile): "Alright, my little curious flash. Imagine this—everything around you freezes. The world slows down to almost nothing, but you... you're still moving. It's like you're the only one who gets to see the world in a different way. Each droplet of water looks like it’s hanging in the air, waiting for you to slip between them. But there's no sound—just you and the stillness. It’s like running through a painting that hasn’t finished being painted yet."

Ethan’s eyes widened, completely engrossed in her description.

Aria (continuing, grinning): "And the wind? Oh, it’s a little like being hugged by a thousand breezes at once. It’s soft, but powerful. It pushes you, but you push back, and the whole world bends to your will. It feels like freedom. Complete, endless freedom."

Ethan (in awe): "Wow... that sounds incredible. Like you can see the world in slow motion but at super speed!"

Aria (nodding): "Exactly, Flash! It’s like having the whole world to yourself, even if it’s just for a second."

Ethan hugged her tightly again, his small face glowing with excitement as he imagined what it would feel like to move like her.

Ethan (dreamily): "One day... I want to feel that too."

Aria smiled warmly, stroking his hair.

Aria (gently): "Maybe one day you will, Flash. But even if you don’t, you’ve got something just as amazing."

Ethan looked up, curious.

Ethan: "What’s that?"

Aria (poking his head): "That brilliant mind of yours."

Ethan giggled, snuggling back into her arms as they lay together, the sound of the waterfall in the background.

Aria (grinning): "So, my little Flash, is there something you want from me? Or were you just here to flatter me with compliments?"

Ethan, smiling mischievously, sat up and turned to her.

Ethan: "Actually, I need your help... in the lab."

Aria groaned dramatically, rolling her eyes in mock protest.

Aria: "Ugh, not your science stuff again..."

Ethan (pouting playfully): "Ariaaaa, pleaseee..."

Aria looked at him with a teasing smile, then reached out and gently pinched his small lips between her fingers.

Aria: "Hmm, I’ll think about it... but only if you give me a kiss from these adorable lips first."

Ethan giggled at her playful demand, shaking his head as he beamed up at her.

Ethan (laughing): "You’re so silly, Aria... but I love you."

He then leaned in and kissed her soft cheeks, then gave her a quick peck on the lips. Aria sighed dramatically, placing a hand on her heart as if she were melting right there on the spot.

Aria (pretending to swoon): "Ahhh, now I’m completely melted! You might need to pour me into one of your beakers, Ethan. I don’t think I can move!"

Ethan laughed, his joy bubbling over at her playful antics.

Ethan (giggling): "Ariaaaaaa"

They both laughed together, the sound echoing in the open air, before Aria scooped him up effortlessly into her arms.

Aria (laughing): "Alright, alright, let's go to your lab before I turn into a puddle. But you better keep those kisses coming, Flash!"

As they headed back inside the castle, Aria kissed his head affectionately every few steps, and Ethan, still giggling, returned the favor with tiny kisses on her cheek. The way they exchanged affection felt like the most natural thing in the world, an endless loop of warmth and love.

When they entered the makeshift lab, Ethan hopped onto his small chair while Aria stood behind him, her towering presence making the lab feel cozier. Ethan handed her a beaker carefully.

Ethan: "Okay, I need you to shake this as fast—but not too fast, or it’ll break!"

Aria raised an eyebrow, smirking as she took the beaker from his hands.

Aria (teasing): "Hmm... high speed but no shattering? Alright, Flash, I’ll try not to cause a mini-explosion in your lab."

With a wink, she began shaking the beaker with her speed, her movements so controlled and precise that the liquid inside swirled smoothly without splashing. As she worked, the mixture began to shift colors, glowing with soft hues. Ethan’s eyes widened with excitement.

Ethan (grinning, examining it): "It looks... perfect! Thank you, Aria!"

But Aria wasn’t satisfied with just a verbal thank you. She leaned down with a playful grin, her eyes twinkling.

Aria (teasing): "Oh no, no, no... That’s not how you thank someone, Ethan."

Ethan giggled, catching on immediately. He extended his small arms toward her, inviting her closer.

Ethan (giggling): "Ariaaa!"

Aria, delighted, bent down to meet him, her cheek hovering near his face. Ethan placed his small hands on her soft cheeks, holding her gently as he kissed her sweetly on both cheeks and then on her lips. His kiss was full of affection, and his little “Mwah” sounds made her heart melt.

Aria (sighing happily): "Now that’s a thank you I like."

With a grin, she kissed him back, planting a soft, lingering kiss on his forehead, then gently pecking his cheeks again.

Aria (murmuring affectionately): "You’re the cutest, Ethan. My little Flash, always making my heart feel like it’s running a race."

Ethan giggled, resting his head on her shoulder as she held him close, the lab now filled not just with the glow of magical chemicals but the warmth of their bond.

After Aria gave him a final kiss on the cheek, she stood up, stretching dramatically.

Aria (grinning): "Alright, little Flash. I’m off to see what the others are up to in the hall. If you need anything, you know where to find me!"

Ethan (smiling): "Okay, Aria. Thanks again!"

As she left, her playful energy faded into the distance, Ethan returned to his work, focused once again on the complex task before him. He scribbled a few more calculations on his notepad, biting his lip in concentration. This was the moment he’d been working toward for weeks—the final test.

His hand shook slightly as he picked up a vial filled with a bluish chemical. Ethan carefully pipetted a single drop of the glowing liquid onto the tissue sample—skin taken from one of Ryznith’s monstrous minions. His heart raced as the liquid soaked into the rough, ugly skin. For a few seconds, nothing happened.

Ethan (whispering to himself): "Come on... work, please..."

Suddenly, the skin began to bubble. Ethan’s eyes widened in excitement. The grotesque layer of minion flesh slowly started to dissolve, revealing something smoother, lighter beneath. He leaned in closer, his breath held, watching as the disgusting gray surface peeled away and turned into... normal fairy skin. It shimmered slightly, stable and healthy.

Ethan (jumping out of his seat): "It worked! Oh my …, it actually worked!"

His heart thumped wildly in his chest. He couldn’t contain his excitement. Grabbing another skin sample, he repeated the test, and once again, the minion skin dissolved into normal fairy flesh. His discovery was real—he had found a way to reverse Zovrath’s curse!

Ethan (laughing, talking to himself): "Yes! Yes! I did it! This is incredible!"

Without wasting another second, Ethan dashed out of the lab, clutching the pad containing tissue sample in his hand as he ran toward the hall. His feet barely touched the ground as he burst in the grand hall, breathless and glowing with excitement. The fairies were scattered around, some lounging lazily, others laughing and chatting amongst themselves. Sylph, Nia, and Aria were sitting together, while Lira and Elara were having a quiet conversation.

Ethan (shouting, almost tripping in his excitement): "I did it! I did it! It works!"

All eyes turned toward him as he ran into the room, holding the tissue sample high like a trophy. Sylph raised an eyebrow, leaning forward curiously.

Sylph (teasing): "Whoa there, Firefly! Slow down. You did what exactly?"

Breathless, Ethan thrust the tissue sample into her view.

Ethan (giddy): "Look! The skin! It transformed back into normal fairy skin!"

Nia blinked, sitting up straighter as she processed his words.

Nia (eyes widening): "Wait... you mean that’s from one of those ugly monster minions?"

Lira immediately took the sample from Ethan’s hand, examining it closely, her expression turning from curiosity to awe.

Lira (in disbelief): "He really did it... Ethan, this is incredible."

Elara stepped forward, her calm, wise demeanor hiding the excitement in her voice.

Elara: "Ethan, are you sure? You’ve found a way to reverse the transformation?"

Ethan (beaming up at her): "Yes, Elara! I can show you. I’ve tested it twice, and both times the ugly outer layer dissolved, leaving normal fairy skin underneath. It’s stable!"

Mira joined them, her mouth slightly open in shock.

Mira: "No way. Is that even possible?!"

Ethan (grinning): "Look for yourself, Mira! It’s not just dissolving; it’s fully reverting. We can save them! We can turn them back!"

Tara, who had been standing quietly, took the skin sample from Lira and held it up, squinting.

Tara (grimacing playfully): "Eww, it’s still kind of gross-looking, though."

Ethan laughed, rolling his eyes.

Ethan: "Tara, it’s fairy skin! We can help them now, isn’t that the important part?"

Nia, Aria, and Sylph exchanged amused glances before Sylph leaned over, smirking.

Sylph: "I don’t know, Ethan. Are you sure this isn’t just a clever way to get us all into a spa day?"

Aria (grinning): "Yeah, I mean, I wouldn’t mind turning back into my fabulous self if you could make it happen faster."

Nia (laughing): "Maybe Ethan's trying to start a new beauty trend. 'Monster skin detox,' anyone?"

Ethan couldn’t help but laugh along with them, the joy of his discovery radiating through him.

Ethan (giggling): "You’re all impossible! But seriously... we can save them now."

Lira placed a hand on Ethan’s shoulder, her expression softening as she looked down at him with pride.

Lira: "You’ve done something incredible today, Ethan. You’ve given us a real chance to fight back."

Sylph smiled, giving him a playful nudge.

Sylph: "You’re our little genius, Firefly. We always knew you had it in you."

Ethan, glowing with happiness, looked around at all the fairies, his family, knowing that his discovery meant something big for all of them. The future looked brighter now—because of him.

Zara (still inspecting the skin closely): "Will it work on a living minion though? I mean, this is just a dead tissue sample, right?"

Ethan (pausing, his excitement dimming slightly): "I... I’m not sure. The formula works on dead tissue, but I haven’t tested it on anything living. It could react differently."

Luna (nodding thoughtfully): "So, what you're saying is... we need a living minion to find out."

Ethan (sighing): "Exactly."

Flora (kneeling down to Ethan's height and gently kissing his forehead): "Oh, Flower, I know it will work. You always find a way to do something amazing."

Lira (her voice filled with admiration): "If this works on a living minion, Ethan, this would be the greatest gift you've ever given us. We could save our kind—everyone Zovrath turned into those monsters."

Elara (her calm voice carrying a deep sense of hope): "It would mean the survival of our civilization. Ethan, we would be in your debt. Forever."

Ethan (shaking his head, feeling slightly overwhelmed): "Elara, don’t say it like that. I’m just... just a curious and was trying to solve a problem. That’s all I did."

Zara (smiling softly): "No, Ethan. What you’ve done here is greater than all your other inventions combined. You’ve given us hope."

Ethan (laughing, still a bit confused): "All my inventions? The only thing I made before this was the boulder breaker, and that ended up demolishing the wall by accident!"

Zara and the other fairies chuckled at the memory.

Aria (grinning mischievously): "Alright then, enough talk. Let’s go find ourselves a living minion. Who’s with me?"

Sylph (piping up immediately, her eyes flashing with eagerness): "I'm in! I've been itching to destroy those ugly minions of Ryznith. Call it my personal revenge on her."

Lira (her voice turning serious, bold): "You two think you can handle it alone?"

Sylph (her playful tone replaced with a serious edge): "You know me, Aarthel. If Ryznith’s involved, then no one knows her better than I do. Let me go."

There was an unmistakable intensity in Sylph's voice, and her mention of "Aarthel" made Ethan frown in confusion.

Lira (locking eyes with Aria): "And you?"

Aria (teasing Sylph with a smirk): "Someone’s got to save my Sylph when she inevitably gets herself into trouble."

Sylph shot Aria a mock glare, but the tension lightened as the fairies laughed.

Ethan (scratching his head, confused): "Wait... Aarthel? What’s that? And how does Sylph know Ryznith better than the rest of you?"

Tara (stepping in quickly, her tone light and reassuring as she tried to defuse the situation): "Oh, charmer, it’s nothing. You know how Sylph can be—always pretending to know more than she does." (She smiled warmly, giving Ethan a playful wink to smooth over his confusion.)

Ethan, still curious, hesitated but then nodded, trusting Tara's words for the moment. But something in Sylph’s expression stayed with him—a hint of something deeper, something left unspoken.

Lira: "Then it’s settled. You’ll go at night. You two, make sure you’re prepared."

Sylph (her voice low, but intense, eyes flickering with fiery anger): "It’s Ryznith who should be prepared now."

As Sylph's eyes began to blaze with flames, the sheer force of her anger was palpable. Her hand began to glow red-hot. She got lost in it, her fiery hatred for Ryznith burning brighter. But in that moment, she became oblivious to how it affected those around her, especially little Ethan, who trembled and instinctively clung to Lira's leg, seeking shelter.

Ethan (whispering, his small hands clutching Lira’s leg tightly): "Liraa....Her hand... they're red..."

Lira (quickly kneeling, wrapping her strong protective arms around him): "Hey, hey, don't get scared, sweetheart?"

The other fairies immediately sensed the tension and all called out in unison.

Everyone: "Sylph!"

Snapping out of her rage, Sylph blinked, her eyes returning to their usual vibrant. Her fiery glow dimmed as she saw Ethan trembling behind Lira. Realizing what had happened, her heart sank.

Luna (gently but firmly): "Sylph, you scared him. You need to control that anger."

Sylph’s face fell. She quickly knelt down to Ethan’s level, her expression filled with regret and guilt.

Sylph (voice soft, desperate): "Oh...sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry. Ethan... I didn’t mean to frighten you. Please, don’t be scared of me."

Ethan (his voice small as he peeked out from Lira’s arms): "But your eyes... they were flaming..."

The other fairies had all seen Sylph’s eyes ignite like that before—when she was enraged or deadly serious. But they also knew she would never harm any of them, least of all Ethan, whom she adored more than life itself.

Lira (stroking Ethan’s hair, her voice soft and reassuring): "Ethan, it’s just her power. There’s nothing to be afraid of, okay? She would never hurt you."

Sylph (her voice trembling with emotion): "Oh, baby... please…please.. don’t be scared of me. I love you so much. I just... I got angry at Ryznith, but never at you. Please... come to me..."

Nia (trying to lighten the mood with a gentle smile): "Snow, you know Sylph is silly sometimes. She just overreacts, that’s all. Right?"

Aria (chiming in, her voice teasing yet comforting): "And you know how much she loves you. You always talk about how you love her hair and her jokes. Don’t be scared of her."

Zara (her calm, wise voice adding to the reassurance): "And you know Sylph would never, ever hurt you, Ethan. You’ve seen that in her a hundred times."

Ethan's fear was starting to ebb, but he still hesitated, his voice small.

Ethan (his voice small): "But... I never saw her like this before..."

Flora (with her warm, nurturing tone, kneeling beside Lira): "Sweetie, all of us have different powers, and we all have different reactions when we use them. Sylph’s just got a little too fiery. Now, why don’t you go over there and give her a hug? Otherwise, she’s going to wither away thinking you’re scared of her." (She winked at him.)

Sylph (her voice cracking, on the verge of tears): "Please, Ethan... baby, come to me... I promise I won’t let my anger out like that again. Please..."

Ethan slowly emerged from Lira’s protective arms. Sylph, on her knees, was just about to cry, her beloved Ethan—her little Firefly—was scared of her, and it broke her heart. She couldn't bear the thought.

As Ethan reached Sylph, he looked into her eyes, seeing the tears welling up, her usual fiery spirit now fragile.

Ethan (in his soft, sweet voice): "Sylph..."

Sylph (her voice trembling, almost crying): "Oh, sweetie... I’m so sorry... Please, please don’t hate me. I couldn’t live with that...You’re all I left with…."

Ethan (quickly shaking his head): "No, Sylph. Don’t say that. I’ll never hate you. Ever."

And with that, Ethan stepped into her open arms, and Sylph pulled him tightly into her embrace. The tears finally fell from her eyes as she held him close, crying softly into his hair, overwhelmed with relief.

Sylph (whispering as she clung to him): "Thank you, Ethan... Thank you..."

The other fairies exchanged gentle smiles, knowing the bond between Sylph and Ethan had only grown stronger through this moment. As Sylph held Ethan tightly, her tears soaked into his hair, and her trembling hands betrayed just how shaken she was. She continued to cling to him, desperate for his forgiveness, terrified that she might have scared the one person she cherished above all others. Her fiery rage toward Ryznith had given way to a deeper fear: the thought that Ethan might never look at her the same again.

Ethan, wrapped in Sylph’s warm embrace, could feel her body trembling against his small frame. Her grip was tight, but not suffocating—more like she was holding on for dear life. He could hear her soft sobs and feel her warm breath on the top of his head. It wasn’t the Sylph he knew—the joyful, teasing fairy with the flaming orange hairs. This was a Sylph filled with regret and fear, a side of her he had never seen before.

With his small hand, Ethan reached up and gently touched her cheek, his fingers brushing against the tears that flowed down her face. His fear of her fiery anger melted away. He could see now that her rage wasn’t directed at him—it never had been. She was hurting too, just in a different way.

Ethan (his voice soft, soothing): "Sylph, don’t cry... It’s okay. I’m not scared anymore. I know you’ll never hurt me."

He wiped away more of her tears with his small fingers, his touch delicate but filled with warmth. Sylph’s sobs softened, but she still couldn’t bring herself to let go of him. She buried her face into the crook of his neck, her arms refusing to loosen their grip around his tiny frame.

Sylph (her voice muffled, full of pain and guilt): "Oh, Ethan... I’m so sorry. I just... I got so angry. Ryznith... just thinking about her makes me lose control. I—I didn’t want you to see me like that. I can’t handle it... and the thought of you being afraid of me... I can’t bear it."

Ethan's small hand continued to stroke her hair, a gesture far too mature and comforting for someone his size, but in that moment, it felt right. He understood now. Sylph’s anger wasn’t something to fear; it was a reflection of how much she cared—about him, about the fairies, about their world. It was her way of protecting what she loved.

Ethan (soft but firm): "Sylph, I know now. I know you would never hurt me. I’m not scared of you... I love you too much for that."

Sylph let out a shaky breath, but her arms still clung to him like he might vanish if she let go. Her tears, though fewer now, still fell as she pressed her forehead against his.

Sylph (whispering, her voice breaking): "Please... don’t ever leave me, Ethan. I can’t stand the thought of it. You’re my little Firefly... the light in my world. I couldn’t handle it if you were ever scared of me. I can’t even control how I feel when Ryznith comes to mind. She did so many horrible things, and every time I think of her, it’s like this fire inside me burns hotter... but I swear, I’ll never let that fire hurt you. I promise, Ethan... I’ll never let anything hurt you. Not even me."

Ethan felt her sincerity, her desperation to protect him, to keep him close. He squeezed her back as tightly as his little arms could manage, reassuring her in the only way he knew how.

Ethan (softly, resting his head against her chest): "I’m here, Sylph. I won’t leave you. You don’t need to worry about that."

Sylph’s sobs softened even more at his words, though she still held onto him as if afraid to let go. She kissed the top of his head, her fiery temper long gone, replaced by nothing but pure, unfiltered love and relief.

Sylph (her voice barely above a whisper, still holding him tightly): "Thank you... Thank you, Ethan. You’re so much stronger than I am sometimes. I’ll always protect you, I swear it... I’ll never let anything take you from me. Not Ryznith, not anyone."

Ethan pulled back just a little, enough to look up into her tear-filled eyes. His small fingers gently wiped the remaining tears from her cheeks.

Ethan (smiling softly, his voice reassuring): "I know, Sylph. I trust you. You’re my Sylph, and you always will be."

Sylph let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding, and she finally, finally loosened her grip on him, though her hands still rested on his back, unwilling to let him go entirely.

Sylph (her voice cracking, but relieved): "You’re everything to me, Firefly. I don’t know what I’d do without you."

Ethan gave her a little grin, his eyes sparkling with the kind of trust and affection that made her heart swell.

Ethan (teasing gently): "Well, you’d probably burn a few things... but I’d never leave you, Sylph."

That playful remark broke through Sylph’s lingering sorrow, and a soft, choked laugh escaped her. She leaned down and kissed his forehead, her fiery eyes now filled with warmth and love, her anger long gone.

Sylph (smiling through her tears): "You’re impossible, you know that?"

Ethan (grinning): "But you love me anyway."

Sylph nodded, still holding him close.

Sylph (whispering): "More than anything, Firefly. More than anything."

As Sylph held Ethan close, her tears finally starting to subside, the other fairies stood in silence, their hearts heavy with the weight of what they had just witnessed. None of them had ever seen Sylph like this before. She had always been the one to make them laugh, to lighten even the darkest of moments. But now, she was vulnerable—raw with emotion and fear—and that shook them more than they cared to admit.

Flora was the first to move, stepping forward quietly, her face filled with a tender understanding. She knelt beside Sylph and Ethan, placing a gentle hand on Sylph's back. Her voice was soft.

Flora (smiling warmly): *"Sylph... You’ve got such a big heart. It’s okay to cry. You’ve always been there for us, and now we’re here for you, just like we always will be.

Lira, who had been standing with her arms crossed, her expression stern but emotional, took a deep breath. Even she had to fight back tears seeing Sylph break down. She approached slowly and placed a strong, reassuring hand on Sylph's shoulder.

Lira (in a firm but affectionate voice): "We all know what Ryznith did, Sylph. She haunts all of us in different ways. But you're not alone in this fight. Ethan’s not alone. None of us are."

Lira looked down at Ethan with a smile, then ruffled his hair gently.

Lira (softer now): "You're our heart, Ethan. And we will always love you. You don’t have to be afraid, not of Sylph or anyone else."

Sylph, her face still damp with tears, nodded slowly, her lips trembling as she tried to find her voice.

Sylph (voice still shaky): "I—I just don’t want him to see me like that again... I can’t stand the thought of hurting him..."

Nia, her usual gentle and calming presence, couldn’t hold back anymore. She knelt beside Sylph and Ethan, wrapping her arms around both of them in a warm, nurturing embrace. Her voice was soothing, filled with love.

Nia: "You’re not going to hurt him, Sylph. None of us will. We're family, remember? We’re stronger together, and Ethan... well, he’s the piece that holds us all together, isn’t he?"

Ethan, feeling the overwhelming love surrounding him, smiled shyly. His fear had long since faded, replaced by a deep understanding of just how much he meant to each of the fairies.

Ethan (his voice small but happy): "I know you’ll never hurt me. I love you all too... so much."

Aria, who had been unusually quiet, couldn’t hold back anymore. She stepped forward and crouched down, wiping away her own tears with a dramatic flourish before speaking in her usual playful tone.

Aria (smirking, trying to lighten the mood): "Well, if we all start crying like this, we’ll flood the whole castle! I mean, come on, it’s Sylph crying! Sylph! I didn’t even know you had this many tears!"

Luna (playfully): "Well, now we know what it takes to get Sylph to cry! But honestly, Sylph, no matter what happens, we all know you’d burn the world for us—and especially for this little guy."

Sylph let out a choked laugh, her tears still falling, but now mixed with a little bit of joy. She looked up at Aria with a playful smirk of her own.

Sylph (sniffing, trying to smile): "What can I say when it comes to my firefly?"

Luna, who had been watching with her arms crossed, stepped forward and added with a grin.

Mira : "Well, I’ll tell you this—Ethan’s braver than all of us. He just soothed a fairy of fire! Not many can say they’ve done that."

Zara, wiping her own eyes, nodded in agreement.

Zara (chuckling): "He’s not just a little bookworm; he’s our heart, our warrior. We’re all so lucky to have him."

Tara, who had been quietly observing, suddenly broke the solemnity of the moment with a mischievous grin.

Tara: "And if we don’t lighten up, Flora’s going to drown us all with her tears!"

Everyone turned to Flora, who was indeed crying softly, her large, maternal eyes glistening with emotion. She let out a little gasp and wiped her face dramatically.

Flora (sniffling, trying to sound offended): "Well, I can’t help it! Seeing my little Flower and Sylph like this... it’s just too much!"

At that, everyone laughed. Even Sylph couldn’t help but giggle through her lingering tears. The tension in the air seemed to lift as they all shared in the warmth of their love for one another.

Sylph, still holding Ethan but with much less desperation now, sighed deeply and kissed the top of his head again.

Sylph (softly): "Thank you, Firefly. I feel so much better now... I promise, no more scary eyes."

Ethan, now feeling completely at ease, looked up at her with a grin.

Ethan (teasingly): "Good. But you know... you still owe me for scaring me like that."

Sylph raised an eyebrow, pretending to be shocked.

Sylph: "Owe you? What does the little firefly want as payment?"

Ethan thought for a moment, then smirked.

Ethan: "Well, maybe... an extra big hug?"

Sylph’s eyes lit up with joy, and without hesitation, she pulled him into a huge, exaggerated hug.

Sylph (laughing through her remaining tears): "You got it, Firefly! The biggest hug in the whole world!"

The other fairies watched, their hearts swelling with love as the mood lightened once more. Whatever darkness had hung over them before was now gone, replaced by the warmth of their unbreakable bond.

----------------------------------------

The night had fallen softly around the castle, its dark cloak punctuated by the twinkling stars above. The giant trees encircling the castle stood tall and protective, they call it Treeline-shield, their massive trunks swaying gently in the cool breeze. The fairies had gathered in front of the entrance, their silhouettes illuminated by the soft glow of moonlight filtering through the thick leaves.

Aria and Sylph were standing in front of Ethan, both dressed in their sleek war uniforms, a sight so different from their usual soft, flowing attire. Aria’s uniform, tight-fitting and stylishly red and white, accentuated her speed and agility. Her special boots were made for enhanced movement, practically gleaming with potential. Sylph’s attire was just as impressive, her flaming orange and white suit glowing faintly as if igniting her fire and wind powers from within.

Ethan, wide-eyed and clearly amazed, stood there gawking at them, unable to pull his gaze away. He had been staring for phls (Hours in this universe, 1 phl = 75 minutes) now, but he couldn’t help it. This was the first time he had seen either of them in battle attire, and to him, they looked like warriors straight out of a dream—strong, fierce, and, well… stunning.

Aria noticed his lingering gaze and smirked, crossing her arms and tilting her head. Her eyes sparkled with mischief, always eager to tease.

Aria (playfully mocking): "Ethan, sweetheart, you’ve been staring for ages now. Do I have something on my uniform? Or... could it be that you just can’t resist how fabulous I look in red and white?"

Ethan’s face turned a bright shade of red as he struggled to find the right words. Before he could respond, Sylph chimed in with her own teasing grin.

Sylph (grinning): "Oh, I see what’s going on here. He’s just mesmerized by how blazing I look in orange, isn’t that right, Firefly?"

She raised her arms, twirling dramatically, the fiery glow of her uniform casting small flickers of light into the night air.

Ethan, overwhelmed by the sudden attention, stammered as he tried to respond.

Ethan (sheepishly): "N-n...No..Its..just you both look so cool! I’ve never seen you wear these before. And Sylph, this has to be the best dress you’ve ever worn! It’s... it’s just amazing!"

Sylph's eyes widened, her lips parting in exaggerated shock. She clutched her chest as if she’d been gravely insulted, her expression mock-hurt.

Sylph (dramatically, pretending to be wounded): "Oh, Ethan! You mean to tell me all my other dresses weren’t amazing enough for you? After all the time I spent choosing them just to impress you?!"

She pouted, turning her back slightly and crossing her arms, pretending to be offended.

Ethan’s eyes went wide with panic, his innocent heart racing as he tried to fix the situation.

Ethan (frantically): "No, no, Sylph, that’s not what I meant! You always look beautiful and awesome, in every dress! I-I just meant this one’s... well, special!"

Before he could catch his breath, Aria, never one to miss an opportunity for playful teasing, joined in, her hands on her hips.

Aria (pretending to be upset): "So, what you’re saying is, my regular outfits don’t do it for you either, huh? All those times I dressed up and now it’s just, 'Oh, this one's better'? I’m hurt, Ethan. Really hurt."

She feigned wiping a tear from her eye, sniffing theatrically.

Ethan’s face went pale as he tried to dig himself out of the hole they were both playfully burying him in.

Ethan (pleading): "No! I didn’t mean that! You both always look amazing—every day, every dress! I swear!"

Sylph pretended to sniffle, wiping a fake tear from her eye, while Aria smirked, her eyes twinkling with mischief.

Sylph (in a trembling voice): "It’s too late, Ethan. My poor heart is shattered. I’ll never recover from this betrayal..." She dramatically turned away, as if she were on the verge of weeping.

By now, Sylph and Aria were biting back their laughter, the whole thing too funny to continue. But they weren’t quite done yet. Sylph gave Aria a wink, and the two fairies exchanged a look, ready to push him just a little bit further.

Sylph (mock-serious): "I don’t know, Aria. He didn’t sound all that convincing, did he?"

Aria (shaking her head dramatically): "Nope. I think he’s in trouble."

Both fairies turned their backs to Ethan, arms crossed, pretending to sulk like they’d been seriously offended. Ethan, feeling completely lost, looked between them in sheer panic.

Ethan (desperately): "Please! I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings! You’re both the coolest, most beautiful fairies ever! I promise!"

There was a beat of silence, just long enough for Ethan to wonder if he’d seriously upset them. But then, both Aria and Sylph turned around, grinning from ear to ear, their laughter bubbling up all at once.

Sylph (sqeezing his cheeks): "Awwww..., My Firefly, you’re just toooo cute!"

Aria (giggling): "You should’ve seen your face! We were just messing with you, Ethan!"

Ethan blinked, realizing he had been thoroughly played. A wave of relief washed over him, but he couldn’t help the shy smile that followed.

Ethan (grinning, still a little flustered): "I should’ve known... you two are the worst!"

Aria stepped forward, ruffling his hair with a playful grin.

Aria: "Aw, come on! You know you love it. Admit it, you enjoy all the attention from us!"

Sylph, still grinning, knelt down to be closer to his height and gently cupped his face in her warm hands.

Sylph (softly): "You can stare as long as you like, Firefly. We don’t mind. And just so you know, we’ll always love you, no matter how much you get lost in our outfits."

Aria nodded, crossing her arms and giving him a wink.

Aria: "Exactly! So feel free to admire us anytime you want. We won’t get upset—promise."

Ethan’s cheeks flushed, but the warmth in their eyes reassured him. They weren’t teasing him to be mean—they truly cared for him, and they’d never stop showing him that love. Feeling more at ease, Ethan smiled back up at them, a little more confident now.

Ethan (genuinely): "Thanks... I love you both too."

Sylph leaned down and planted a gentle kiss on his forehead, her eyes sparkling with affection.

Sylph (softly): "We know, Firefly. And we’ll never stop loving you."

Aria, never one to be outdone, wrapped her arms around both Sylph and Ethan, pulling them into a tight, warm hug.

Aria (grinning): "Now, come here! Group hug time, because we love you that much!"

Ethan found himself sandwiched between the two fairies, their laughter filling the air as they held him close. In that moment, surrounded by their warmth and affection, Ethan felt completely at peace.

The night around them seemed to hum with the same joy, the giant trees standing tall and silent, guarding their little family as they shared this playful and heartwarming moment under the stars.
