Chapter Four: House of Madness

Chapter Four: House of Madness

Quay’tera 7

Quasqueton is finished. At least for us. More creatures will move in sometime in the next few months, and someday another adventuring party will have to clear it out again. It’s the circle of life. No singing, please.

We’re on the way back to Farzey again. I could really use a travel montage here.

----

Quay’tera 11

Arriving tomorrow. Didn’t get my montage.

----

Quay’tera 14

It took three days, but we finished selling everything, which got a small [Treasure: +129 E.P.] bonus. Halamin and Torendrock will both be in school starting tomorrow. Those final fights must have put him over the top. Marigold said she needed a few weeks to work on her spellbook, so… I guess I need to find something to do for the next two weeks.

----

Quay’tera 15

You can probably guess where I was. Yup, in a tavern, enjoying a drink, waiting to see if lightning would strike again, and drop another hook in my lap. It did, but I had to help it along.

“Thokul figured out what happened to the missing kobold war band. He found tracks outside the cursed wizard house, and it looks like they went in. Won’t have to worry about those buggers anymore.”

“How many did he figure?”

“Half-dozen or so. Didn’t see any strays, so I reckon that’s the lot of ‘em.”

The small group of farmers I was sort of eavesdropping on were just passing on information about known local threats, or in this case, the absence of a threat. With most fall crops still a few weeks away from being harvested, it was a brief period of rest for them. The kobold raids were an event our group missed out on, having been traveling at the time.

I leaned toward the table the group was sharing and, in as polite a manner as a half-ogre barbarian can have, asked, “I don’t suppose there’s a reward for collecting kobold ears?” A gruesome method, but fairly standard for bounties on monster races.

I got a couple of head shakes and one shrug in response. The oldest farmer there, judging by the heavily lined face and thin white hair, cackled.

“You gonna go into that cursed house to get ‘em? Best o’ luck to you boy!”

One of them took pity on my blank look. “Wizards built the house. No one who has gone in has come back out in.. ten years at least?”

“Twenty, more like,” another corrected.

He nodded and continued. “There might be a bounty for the house. Used to be, I recall.”

I grunted, “Thanks. Maybe I will. Where is it, anyhow? Can’t hurt to take a look.”

There was some hemming and hawing, but after swearing not to blame them if it went badly, they told me where it was, right on the outskirts of town about where I’d expect wizards to build a house for privacy. I went and took a look, but since I don’t make a habit of walking around town armored and fully loaded with weapons, I decided to tackle it in the morning.

----

Quay’tera 16

The house was two stories, and large enough that you could call it a mansion. Brick walls, with a generous number of good-sized windows; not a single window was broken, though. Dark curtains behind every window, none of which looked rotted away. There was a wooden porch stretching the length of the house front, in good repair but the gray paint was peeling. The entrance was a set of oak double doors with a pair of very amusing door knockers, one a devil, the other an angel.

No doormat this time.

I tried the handle, and while it was unlocked and would turn, the door wouldn’t open. The thought that struck me was that in twenty years, no one had tried to break the door down? Didn’t seem likely. But, wizards… I glanced at the devil and angel knockers. Probably one was a trap, and the other was the way in.

I knocked with the devil knocker.

A moment later, I heard footsteps beyond the door, coming closer. There was a sound like a deadbolt being disengaged, and then the door slowly creaked open. I peered inside, but the foyer was empty, with no sign of whoever opened the door. There was a red carpet running from the door across the room and up the grand stairs on the opposite side. The foyer itself was both stories tall but covered with a fine layer of dust.

I sighed. Dust, with not a single footprint in it. Wizards! Right then and there, I decided that was going to be my all-purpose curse word while inside this house. Because for certain, I was going in.

I loosened my swords in their sheaths but didn’t draw them yet. I stepped into the foyer and one stride past the door, I heard it slam shut behind me. Turning to look, there was no one. Wizards! I stepped back to see if I could open it…

There was no handle on this side.

I tried knocking, but nothing happened. It didn’t matter, I was going to explore this house anyway, but now I knew one part of why no one ever came back out. Besides being too smart to go in in the first place, that is.

I had a choice of four ways to exit. A door to the left, one to the right, or the grand stairs could lead me to doors on the second floor left or right. I chose left, and strode across the foyer.

I was halfway across the room when a sudden and violent wind swept all the dust up into the air. Choking and sneezing, I stumbled across the room and opened the door I was aiming for. Even leaving the room didn’t help much and I must have passed out from the dust, because I woke up in the hallway, leaning against the closed door. No idea how much time had passed, either.

Someone had made an effort to rob me while I was out, though. My swords were scattered on the floor, my backpack had been rifled through, but after putting everything to rights, the only thing missing was a dagger. I had wisely left the bulk of my valuables with Torendrock, just keeping a handful of small coins on me. Whoever robbed me wasn’t interested in silver or copper, I guess. Even the silver-coated sword I have was left behind. Or possibly it was too heavy for the thief.

Looking around, I was a set of hallways that branched everywhere. I drew my swords and pulled open the door to the room right across the hall. The room was probably once a dining room, but with all the furniture jumbled in a pile in the corner. And the stench was awful. The mess and the smell reminded me of the trash ogre we had found.

I must have seen him before he saw me because the ogre looked surprised when I suddenly charged him. I hit him once [-20] but missed with the other. He roared in anger, but I hit him again before he could attack [-27] and he dropped to the floor, dead. [+284 E.P., +1 honor]

I went back and closed the door, then sighed and started searching through the trash. He’d collected in a little pile. Mostly silver, some copper, a bit of gold, a pearl, and a flask of some potion. While I was searching, there was a rather strange occurrence. A pair of eyes suddenly opened on the wall near me. They rolled to look at me, blinked, then shut again, gone entirely. Wizards!

I went back into the hallway and headed to the next room. It was the kitchen. Unlike the dining room, which was simply trashed, this room looked to still be in use. It was messy and could use a good cleaning, but it clearly was still being used to prepare meals. I was still looking around when a cold gust of wind shot through the room. No dust this time, instead all of the knives got swept up by it, it even tried to pull both swords from my hands and succeeded with one of them.

I stepped back, but none of them actually tried to attack me. They just swirled around in a cyclonic pattern in the room. I grabbed for my sword, dodging the other blades to do so. I got my hand on it on the first try and whatever force was animating it let go when I did. I grabbed at the other knives, mostly catching them with each grab and dodging every time. I could see, however, that this would have been a terrifyingly dangerous trap for anyone who couldn’t dodge the blades as easily as I could. As I grabbed the last one, the wind died out. I put the recovered knives away in a drawer.

There was a pantry attached to the kitchen, with mostly fresh food. Nothing spoiled, nothing rotten. Well, except for one old loaf of bread that might have been forgotten. I left the food there.

The next room was the library. It was fairly empty of books for the number of bookcases available, and the furniture was in bad shape. There was a flickering light coming from under the couch, though. I didn’t smell smoke, but it looked like there was a fire underneath it. My walking over to investigate must have been noticed because two fire beetles crawled out to greet me. I swung and hit one [-9], they tried to bite me with the uninjured one simply missing and the other slamming his head into the floor, so I hit that one again [-21]. Either my blow or hitting the floor took it out, as it stopped moving. The remaining beetle tried to bite again, but I took it out [-16] with two [-15] good blows. [+74 E.P., +1 honor]

I knew about these guys. Each had three special glands that glowed red, a bit like a firefly glows yellow. It was a purely chemical glow, and the glands could be harvested and would keep working for a few days. I ruined four glands learning how to cut them out, but I got two. The floor in the library would have a nice bright red glow for a few days.

I wasn’t sure if the books were worth anything, but I started tossing them in my pack regardless. I could at least try to sell them. Had a laugh when one of the books turned out to be fake. Into the Netherdeep was the trigger for a secret door. Never would have found it otherwise. The secret door led to a set of stairs going down, but I decided not to mess with that just yet and closed the door instead.

Heading out the second library door, I nearly walked into a hunchbacked man-sized figure locking a door right next to the one I was coming out of. He was standing over a full sack and holding a shovel but didn’t immediately move to pull out a weapon, so I held back on attacking him. He finished turning the key and tucked it away as he spoke to me. “Doeth the mawther know you are here?” he asked, in the most cliched Igor-ish lisping accent I’ve ever heard.

“Haven’t found him yet.” I gestured at the door. “Is that the exit?”

He ignored my question and picked up his sack, then started to sidle around to walk past me. “I need to let the mawther know you are here.”

I stepped to block his path. “Naw, that’s not gonna happen. Give me the key.”

He stopped short and started to back away, holding the shovel like a talisman in between us. “Thith ith the mawther’th houth!”

I grimaced. “Give me the key or I take it from your corpse.” I feel the need to defend myself from criticism here. I wasn’t actually planning on killing him, I just wanted to secure my exit path. But really, looking back, it’s fairly obvious that of course, he would feel he had to defend himself with a preemptive strike.

He dropped the sack and shifted his grip on the shovel. I’d forgotten about the Shoveler from Mystery Men, and also that the shovel was considered by many military men to be the best weapon for trench fighting. He’d been holding a weapon the entire time. I got my blade past his defense first [-17], dodged his shovel, and then hit him again [-19]. He sank to the floor, bleeding but still alive. [+160 E.P., +1 honor]

I reached into the pocket that held the key. He lay still, only his eyes moving as I took it out and held it up in front of him. “Was that really necessary? All I wanted was the key.” I looked inside the sack he’d dropped. It was food, for restocking the pantry I assumed. When I looked up, he’d passed out, but was still breathing.

I moved him into the library and left him there. He’d probably be fine. I grabbed his coin purse, of course.

I moved onto the next room, which opened into a greenhouse, badly overgrown. It didn’t seem like there was anything interesting in here until some of the branches unfolded and attacked. I hit the first one I saw [-20], but couldn’t figure out what I was fighting until they bit at me. There were three of them, including one I never saw behind me. Luckily, my armor held that one off, and the other two never came close. I took down the one I’d hit [-9] and shifted so there wouldn’t be one at my back.

They were giant-sized stick bugs, and the skinny things were strangely hard to hit. I missed a few times before striking home [-11] once. I hit the same one again [-7] and took it out, hitting the third once [-10] as well. Two more blows [-9] were enough [-9] to finish the last off. [+47 E.P., +1 honor]

There was a second door out of the greenhouse, so I headed through that. Some kind of drawing-room, it appeared. Amusingly, there was a kobold peeking from behind a couch, pointing a javelin at me. It barked something at me, but I don’t speak Kobold.

“I don’t speak Kobold.”

It paused, tilted its head, and barked something fairly different. A second language maybe.

“Don’t speak that either.”

Two more kobold heads came out, and another javelin pointed at me. They didn’t seem willing to start a fight. I was still feeling guilty about nearly killing the hunchback, so I hesitated too. When nothing continued to happen, I put my swords away and held up my empty hands. Maybe a tiny bit risky, but how could I consider kobolds a real threat? They didn’t back down at all but didn’t attack either. So, I turned and exited the drawing-room through the nearby door, stepped back into the hallways, and closed it behind me.

As far as I could tell, there was only one more room on this first floor. Rearming myself, I opened the door into a music room. Stacks of sheet music on shelves, a wide variety of instruments around the room, and a flute rested on a music stand in the center. Based on the light dusting on everything but the flute, it was likely the only instrument still getting any kind of use. I took a closer look at it, curious if it was worth anything. The moment my fingers made contact though, it levitated up and started playing itself. Wizards! Pretty melody, though.

It finished playing and dropped back onto the stand. This time, I was able to pick it up and toss it in my pack. Magic always fetched a decent price.

So, now I had a tough choice. Brave the choking dust cloud to go up, or go through the secret door down. Wrapping a wet rag over my face, I went upstairs. The same gust of wind triggered, swirling dust around, but I noticed as I went up the stairs that none of it went above the level of the first floor. Standing at the top of the stairs, the air was clear again.

The hallway upstairs was larger, with nearly all the rooms visible. I didn’t expect this to take long to search.

The first room upstairs was a game room. Pool table, card table, and a small table with a chess set on it. Chess is one of the finest games ever invented, in my opinion. I was a member of the chess club in both high school and college. So naturally, I went over to examine the set. It was already in the start positions and it looked like a gorgeous set of ivory and ebony pieces. I sat down in the single chair to examine it closer.

The voice came from nowhere. “Do you want to play a game?”

“Yes?”

Immediately upon answering, one of the white pawns moved forward. I responded, and the pieces continued to play, utterly crushing me quickly. It felt like all my chess knowledge, and I once had quite a bit, had evaporated. Needless to say, that set was carefully packed in my bag.

The next small room was the first room that was properly clean in the entire house. It was also bare of anything but a bed and a mop. I moved on.

The next room was another bedroom, but deeply disturbing. It was decorated in the most hideous shades of pink, purple, and green, with tarnished metal accents, and all manners of evil iconography. I gave the room the most cursory of searches and found nothing.

The next room was the master bedroom. Most of the room was dusty and decrepit, appearing to have been unused for many years. The bed itself was perfectly clean and pristine, with a beautiful red-headed woman laying on top. She was dressed in gold and black robes and was almost certainly a wizard. My guess was magical sleep. I really should have left her alone, but I didn’t.

I walked over and went to jostle her or prod her awake or something like that. I wasn’t even sure what I’d try.

The second I touched her, the illusion shattered, and the zombie hidden beneath the illusion attacked me! I struck it down [-17] in two [-19] hard blows. [+68 E.P., +1 honor]

You could be reading stolen content. Head to the original site for the genuine story.

The bed itself was no illusion, but I was hardly going to try and carry that out of here.

There was an ensuite bathroom here as well, decorated in his and hers slate grey and pink. The tub had a curtain around it and possessed by curiosity, I pushed it back.

The tub was full to the brim with blood or bloody water. There, just to top it off, a man’s dead body floating face down in the bloody mess. Wizards! I started to walk out, then had an epiphany strike me. The corpse was probably another zombie. I turned back, and sure enough, it was standing up now, stepping out of the tub. One rather remarkable thing that I honestly didn’t notice until a bit later was that the blood or bloody water had stayed in the tub.

I swung first and had some of the weakest blows I can recall making, with the first [-9] below what I thought was possible, and the second [-13] at the minimum.

I swung again, hitting [-10] twice more [-14] almost as poorly as before before it went down. [+68 E.P., +2 honor]

I must have triggered some kind of internal alarm because coming out of the master bedroom, I surprised three skeletons in the hallway.

I fell upon them from behind and nearly obliterated them in fast blows. [-9], [-10], [-8], [-10], [-10], [-14], [-8], [-8], and two of the three went down. I didn’t recall skeletons being so slow to react, but I got in eight blows before they even turned to attack me. I still hit the last one twice more [-6], with the final blow being the only one [Crit! Severity 5, Forearm, -17, +1 honor] of interest. [+205 E.P., +2 honor]

I waited in the hallway for a few minutes to see if anything else was coming, but with only one room left on this floor, I was eager to get done. While I was waiting, I noticed one of the skeletons had dropped a key. It was an identical match to the one I already had. Why on earth would a skeleton be trusted to go outside--actually, I wasn’t sure a skeleton was even smart enough to use a key.

It was some kind of den, with a fire lit in the fireplace. It also had some interesting decorations, but I’ll get to that in a minute.

There was a seated figure, and as you might guess by now, it was yet another undead. Ghoul, this time. Which meant paralysis touch. I struck first [-17] and then dodged the fast-moving claws at least once each before getting the second blade to strike home [-27] and took it down. [+184 E.P., +2 honor]

So, the decorations. As soon as the ghoul went down, a voice came from nowhere. “Well done! Now you get your pick of the spoils - you may only take one of each. Choose wisely!”

OK. Hanging above the fireplace were three round shields. On the left, three suits of chainmail on stands. On the right, three longswords hung on the wall.

The armor wasn’t elven chainmail, the swords were too small, and I don’t use shields. But, loot is loot. I touched the first set of chainmail, which instantly resized to fit me while the other two sets vanished. I touched the last longsword, which to my regret did nothing, and the other two blades also vanished. Finally, I touched the middle shield, which did nothing, and the other two shields burst into song and flew around the room.

No, not really. They just vanished.

I collected my spoils. Things to sell were useful for at least that much.

There was a second exit from the study that led to a short hallway. The only remarkable feature was a trapdoor set in the ceiling. Not a hidden type of trapdoor, a perfectly obvious one. Opening it led to a tower-like room above the entire house. It had a coffin fitted with a mattress - perhaps a necromancer with a sense of humor. I looked under the mattress, found some coins and carved bones. Might be worth something.

As far as I could tell, I had now explored the entire house above the ground. All that was left was the library’s hidden stairway down.

There was a substantial bloodstain where I had left Igor’s body, but it was now missing. I guess he woke up at some point. That made me feel a bit better.

Into the Netherdeep, the only remaining book on the shelf, opened the door for me. At the bottom of the stairs, the first door to the right was a wine cellar. Dusty and sadly depleted.

The next room was quite large and only had two interesting features. One was a summoning circle, the other a podium. No book was on the podium. However, upon entering, there was a brilliant flash of light and a figure appeared in the circle. Shimmering gold robes, worn by an angelic creature with bronze skin, silver hair, white eyes, and white feathered wings. It spoke with a deep voice, “So, have you finally decided to release me?”

I was skeptical. “And what sort of celestial being do you claim to be?”

“I am El. I have been trapped here for some time, my power siphoned to empower this house.”

I nodded in understanding. “Ah, like the fire elemental in the kitchen, and the water elemental in the bathroom?”

“Yes, yes. You must break the circle and free me.”

I tried to look eager. “Freeing you will send them back? They’re too hard to fight.”

“Yes, absolutely. Break the circle and free me.”

“Yeeeeah, that’s not gonna happen.” I got much closer, looking it up and down, trying to see through the illusion. I could almost feel the spell peel back as I hammered the chisel of my disbelief into it. What was left behind was a halfling-sized creature that was probably a devil of some sort. “You can go to hell.” I turned and walked out of the room, rather proud of myself. As the door closed, I got a very pleasant notification. [+1050 E.P., +3 honor]

The next room was a laboratory. A secret laboratory. A secret wizard laboratory. A secret necromancer wizard laboratory. A secret evil necromancer wizard laboratory. Ok, I’m done.

I skipped most of the place, especially the bookcase display cabinet with whatever it was moving inside. The desk had some journals and a strange big mirror. There was a multi-position dial beneath it. So of course, I twisted the dial.

Whoever made this thing was clever. It showed many of the rooms in the house: the porch, the foyer, the ogre’s room, the music room, the kobold’s room, the greenhouse, the back entrance (I hadn’t gone out yet, but it was), the library, the study that had the shield/armor/swords, the small clean bedroom, the master bedroom, and… wait, what was this one?

Did I miss a room? It was showing - actually, what on earth was it showing? It was a scruffy man sitting on a couch, with a puppet on each hand. He seemed to be having a three-way conversation with himself. I suppose I missed a secret door somewhere. Perhaps it was for the best.

I decided to check this room extra thoroughly to make up for it. And sure enough, under the desk was a secret panel. I got stabbed by a possibly-poisoned needle but didn’t feel any effects, so I didn’t worry about it. Inside the panel were two books. Neither was in a language I knew, but I grabbed them anyway. I also collected all the notes on the desk in case they were worth anything to a wizard. There was a second exit from the lab that appeared to lead to the last room, so I went on.

It was a bedroom, and it was occupied.

“So, the adventurer who’s been wandering through my home. The bastard who killed my servant. Die!” Not to delay recording our fight, but I really have to add that he was dressed in the most ghastly combination of eye-searing colors I’ve ever seen. Anyhow…

He started casting a spell, which I certainly wasn’t going to allow. I hit him [-17] and the spell fizzled out. A homunculus I hadn’t been paying much attention to tried to attack me then [-3 dam] and succeeded!

I swung at the homunculus with my second attack [Crit! Severity 11, Arm (upper outer), -16, +1 honor] and got serious payback.

But I needed to take out the wizard, fast. So I hit him again [-16] and watched another spell fizzle. That was good, so I used my second swing at the familiar [-8], but it was hard to hit the tiny thing.

I decided to stop splitting my attack, and hit the wizard again [-26], cutting right through him and then through the familiar as well, dropping both on the same blow. [+897 E.P., +10 honor]

*ding!* Ok, not really, but it was enough.

I took what was worth taking. Sadly, that included the hideous red and pink trimmed cape. Searching the room, I found a locked chest under the bed. Using the key I had just taken from his pocket, I unlocked it and found three books and some glasses. Spellbooks, hopefully?

After all that, there wasn’t much left to do. I opened the back door and left it open. Then I went to the kobold room and opened that door too. The back door was almost just barely visible from their room. Then I left, went to the kobar, and registered for classes to start next week. Without Torendrock to help, I suspected I’d need extra time to sell everything for the best value.

P.S. Got [Damage: +284 E.P.] and [MVP: +1050 E.P.] this time. Very nice way to end a rewarding day. Solo adventures are the best. Although… Not that I'm complaining, but I don't know why there's an MVP award with a party of one.

P.P.S. [Converting 28 honor to 7 Honor] That’s huge. Probably because I was on my own.

----

Quay’tera 21

Well, that was quite the adventure. Selling everything, that is. I basically did what I’ve seen Torendrock do in Haggling, and it seemed to work well enough. I held onto the spellbooks and glasses he had stored under the bed, and also the two books in the secret compartment. Everything else got sold. [Treasure: +1942 E.P]

Had to repair my armor again. Annoying.

Marigold, who had been studiously adding to her spellbook, jumped on the new ones. This evening, she was nearly dancing in delight. Seems like learning spells from someone else’s spellbook gives E.P., which would fit with other bonus rewards I’ve seen. After all, I get bonuses for hitting hard, I would guess Torendrock does too, so Marigold should get extra for learning spells. Which leads to a disturbing thought. What would Halamin get bonuses from? Hopefully not stealing from party members.

----

Tarn’tera 1

School is done! [+2 honor] I am now level 3. Unfortunately, Marigold needs more time to record spells again.

I was torn. On the one hand, I’ve found a decent group of people. On the other, they’re slowing me down. We discussed this at length over drinks tonight and decided to break the party apart. Basically, we cashed out the party treasury, just leaving a few potions and scrolls.

Halamin really isn’t cut out for dungeoneering. Torendrock is too proud to let me carry him so we could travel faster. (Halamin was okay with the idea, but only if they both did it.) And Marigold needs another month to record spells and make a backup spellbook.

So, I’m moving on tomorrow. I’m heading to Frandor’s Keep. The group may or may not follow when Marigold is ready to go. Torendrock voted yes, Halamin voted no, and Marigold wanted to wait until they were ready to go before she’d vote.
