1st Path: Chapter 3

Virgil nodded at Xavier and introduced himself to Xavier.

"Virgil Winters. Forced to be a student here but I will learn as much as I can while here."

Xavier smiled but did not comment on Virgil's words. He had heard from Storm about this new student of theirs and gotten his profile sent over by She-Hulk. Proud, smart, skilled. When looking at his capabilities, it was not wrong for the boy to be so proud. He had skills that surpassed even those of adults. And his mutation giving him additional abilities did not do anything to lower his level of pride.

But this was not the first time Xavier had dealt with a teenager like this. Star athletes, math prodigies, trained assassins. He had seen them all. Each one was great in their field before gaining a mutation that made them even greater. Most let the power get to their head.

But as Xavier looked at Virgil, he realized the boy was a bit different. Although he was prideful, he was not arrogant. It was obvious in the way he spoke.

"I'm sorry to hear that you were forced to be here but I am glad you are here nonetheless. We enjoy having students with your particular skills and... personality. It keeps the staff on their toes."

Virgil smiled at the hidden meaning in the comment but did not retort on it. He knew that he was considered a problem child but had no plans on changing himself to appease the Professor or make the lives of the staff easier.

"Good to hear that your staff are well equipped. I would hate for there to be any issues that crop up later."

"I'm sure there won't be. My staff will not create problems for the students and I believe that you won't purposefully create issues for them either," Xavier said while raising an eyebrow.

Virgil shook his head and put on his best innocent smile that he could muster without being fully sarcastic.

"I can't make any promises but in case I step on anyone's toes, I will apologize afterward."

'Better to ask for forgiveness than being denied permission' was a mentality that Virgil had picked up. And Xavier picked up on Virgil's meaning as well. The older man smirked at the thought of the boy openly admitting to causing trouble.

"I'm glad to hear that you are willing to admit his mistakes and apologize for them," Xavier said before getting on to the main topic. "I'm sure Jean gave you a basic introduction to the school. You are here so that we can help you master your gifts. I was wondering if you don't mind sharing with me what those gifts are exactly. Your eyes are related, I assume."

Virgil's eyes instantly became vigilant.

'Never give away your secrets so easily.'

This was something that Virgil had grown up learning. In a world full of heroes and spies, keeping secrets was second nature for Virgil. He always kept his cards close to his chest. But mutants were different. Their powers were known to all, even their enemies.

Mutants were family. Once they found a team or leader they were under, they became part of that.

'No. Not just the teams or forces they join. Any mutant that comes out as one pretty much outs themselves and their powers. Those that don't... have something to hide.'

Xavier waited for Virgil to make a decision. He knew it would be a large step for Virgil to make. The file that he was sent had a large amount of information about him.

Virgil saw that the Professor was waiting and knew he had a choice to make.

'I told them that I would put in the effort. Such a drag.'

Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

"Fine. My powers originate from my eyes. The basic principle is that I can share my vision with others who have my eyes, create rods made out of pure carbon, and have extreme telepathic resistance. Besides that, I have 6 or 7 powersets attached to these eyes depending on your interpretation," Virgil then went into detail about each of his powersets and what they allowed him to do.

The more he spoke, the more surprised that Xavier became. Each powerset that Virgil had was vastly different from the one before it and would allow him to be helpful in so many situations.

After hearing it all, Xavier's mind was buzzing. So many thoughts were going through his head.

'This boy is magnificent. Each one of his abilities is a gift that many other mutants would be jealous of but he was able to receive them all at once. Not just that he had received them but he also knows about them all as well. How was he able to experiment with all of them so fast to get such a good grasp?'

Xavier could not hold it in and asked the last question he thought of aloud. The answer he got had surprised him just as much as the rest of what Virgil had said before.

"When my powers awakened, I just knew. I had a decent grasp over everything I could do without even using a single one of the abilities yet."

Few mutants knew what their mutant powers were instinctively, yet Virgil could use his powers just like that. His words of not needing to be at the school were not completely false if all that he said was true. After thinking for a moment, Xavier decided to divulge something to Virgil.

"I'm planning to put together a new X-Men team that is composed of young mutants. I believe that not all kids need constant supervision so plan on having this be a more hands-off team with minimal assistance from me and the normal X-Men team. Are you interested in being a member of this team?"

Now it was Virgil's turn to be surprised. While he had heard about how young the original team was when they first went on missions as well as the few exceptions of young mutants allowed to join the team, Xavier had pretty much cut off anyone from becoming a member of the team unless they were an adult for the past 5 years.

'I figured I'd be stuck here for the next 2 and a half years until I graduated. If I join this team, I can at least get some live combat and team training during my time here.'

Virgil accepted the Professor's offer with only a few thoughts. The pair spent the next 20 minutes going over the details of what being on the team meant, a few more rules for the school, and Virgil's potential 'outings' that he might have to apologize for later.

Once he was given his key and told where his room was, Virgil left the office to find his room on his own. He wanted to be alone as well as explore the mansion a bit by himself.

Xavier watched Virgil leave with a small smile on his face. He was not confident about this new team before but with Virgil's skills and mutations, he felt much more confident in sending them on missions. The world was no longer as safe as it was when the X-Men were first formed so they needed more people like Virgil.

'He has spunk and a fire in his heart. Let's just hope that he will stay with us for a long time and not just think of this as a temporary team and mission for him to undertake.'

---

It took Virgil about 20 minutes to finally locate his room. Once he put the key in the lock and opened the door, he was greeted with a plain room. The only things inside of it were a bed with a generic blue blanket and sheet, a dresser, a nightstand, and a closet.

Virgil pulled the luggage into the room before closing the door behind himself. He opened up one of his suitcases and pulled out all his clothes before organizing them in the dresser. Then came the other suitcase. Inside of it were many personal items of Virgil. Several different sets of headphones and earphones, chargers, speakers, and various other small objects. These were placed all around his room to give it more life and personality. But even with all the new items in the room, most would still call it minimalistic.

Lastly was the duffle bag. Virgil pulled out 5 cases of various sizes from within it. When he did, if anyone else was in the room, they would see several boxes left within the duffle bag. Virgil opened each of the cases and checked the state of all the times inside before he put most of them at the top of his closest except for a small one that was put in his nightstand.

Virgil pulled out 2 knives from his duffle bag and put one under his pillow and another was taped to the bottom of his dresser. With all his items put in place, the duffle bag and suitcases were put inside the bottom of the closest. Virgil looked around the room and nodded in appreciation before leaving his room to explore the mansion.

While the rest of the students were in class, Virgil walked around the entire mansion and built a mental map of it. Within 2 hours, he had already memorized most of the rooms within the mansion. The only place he was unable to visit was the basement.

Having had his fill and not wanting to meet any other students for the day, Virgil went to the kitchen to score some snacks but the only things he could find were children's snacks and fruit. With no other choice, Virgil returned to his room with a bag of apples.

Almost as soon as he closed the door, Virgil could hear the halls filled with chatter. At 4 pm, all the classes had gotten out. Now all the students were walking the halls while hanging out with their various friends.

Virgil walked back over to his door to make sure it was locked before he hopped on his bed. The teen pulled out an older set of headphones that looked like something a person would use from the 80s, he plugged them into his phone and starting blasting his playlist of country and rock music. The music was so loud that if anyone else was in the room, they would have been able to hear the music as clearly as if the headphones were not being used.

With his music playing, Virgil grabbed one of the books from his nightstand and opened it up to where the bookmark was located before he started diving into the book. For the rest of the day and part of the night, Virgil was in a world of his own and enjoying his alone time.

Several students wanted to try and talk to the new student they heard about but it was an unspoken rule in the school to not try and force themself on any new student. No one knew what situation someone came from and since many of the kids were runaways if anyone felt uncomfortable before they acclimated, there was a chance that kids could run away from their new home.

So as much as they wanted to meet the student that 'flirted with Kitty in front of Bobby' and 'tried to hit on Ms. Grey', none of them could sate their curiosity.

Around 10 P.M. Virgil finally got too tired and decided to head to bed. His official first day at the school would be the next.

Before Virgil turned off his lamp near his bed, he went into the nightstand and pulled out the small case that he had put inside of it. Virgil flipped through the numbers on the lock of the case before it was opened and revealed a gun with 2 clips of ammo. As a SHIELD agent in training, Virgil had gotten used to keeping a weapon by his side at all times, so his gaining of mutant powers would not change that habit any time soon.

After loading one of the clips of ammo into the gun and making sure the safety was on, Virgil placed it under his pillow. Virgil soon placed his head down on the pillow and soon drifted off to sleep.
