chapter4: 22

  Some year,month, and day, gloomy.

Today was a terrible day, absolutely dreadful. My inner self felt the same way too.

This marks the seventh day since I was kidnapped into this world, and my emotions have been like a tightly wound string, constantly on the verge of snapping.

The monster named Cha claimed to have“invited”me here, but can we really call this act an invitation when it was done without my consent? I have serious doubts about it.

Over the past few days, I have been reflecting and trying to make sense of everything that has happened to me. Despite my brain often feeling foggy, it hasn't been completely useless. These creatures, who call themselves dinosaur-beings, possess a supernatural ability, similar to a form of mind control or psychic power.

This is not a comic book or some science fiction movie; it is a real existence. Psychic powers can manipulate one's mind or alter their memories.

They manipulate my body and create an illusion of self-destruction, ultimately bringing me to this extradimensional world called the Reptilian paradise through a wormhole (a swirling portal that appears out of nowhere, emitting a soft white light).

Their reasons for kidnapping me are so ridiculous and absurd that I suspect there's something wrong with their brains.

Damn it, those idiots think I'm some fucking savior, that's the biggest bullshit I've ever heard, more unacceptable than the sun rising from the west or my grandma's smelly socks.

Relying on a high school student to save the world, what kind of Japanese fantasy light novel is this?

I once had a period of Sparkling Daydream, but everyone does, right? Who hasn't fantasized about becoming a hero and saving the world when they were teenagers?

When that monster told me that I was the savior they were looking for, honestly, I was shocked. I can't deny that I felt a slight excitement, but it was just a fleeting feeling.

I even unconsciously recalled some heroic figures like Superman, Spider-Man, and Sun GuKong. I tried to find some similarities between them and myself, but fuck shit, it was meaningless. I am destined to be a no one, not a big one.

This is obviously their trick, a lie to make me let my guard down. I don't know how they will deal with me in the future, but it's always right not to believe their words, yes, absolutely right.

Moreover, they have an unfriendly designation for me,“Subject 45.“ He explained to me that it is part of a plan: the Savior Project.

But what does 45 represent? That monster didn't tell me. The only thing he told me is that I need to go through a series of tests, but he kept me completely in the dark about the content of the tests.

Perhaps the so-called tests have already begun, on the day they brought me here, or maybe they started even earlier.

I even had a bold thought: I was born to fulfill some special mission. Oh, of course, definitely not the mission of being a savior. I'm sure of that. Come on, a guy with no talent, average abilities, and an average appearance can never be cut out for it, I mean, a savior, right?

I have to think that way. The evening's fiery clouds, the eerie scene at the platform on the day I returned to school, they are like shadows engraved in my memory that won't go away.

This thought is not groundless because that monster, with a slightly threatening tone, told me that they have long been in collusion with some big figures in the human world.(Who are these big figures?) He even proudly claimed that they have played a role in the development of human civilization.(Isn't the development of civilization the result of human wisdom?)

If what he said is true, based on this, my birth is schemed, a speculation that I am a product cultivated by them in the human world doesn't seem far-fetched.

It's not just me, in this base, there are many other subjects captured from the human world.

There are many things that I instinctively refuse to believe, but the undeniable facts in front of me remind me of those unbelievable things I have heard of: dinosaur-beings, aliens, black magic, Illuminati, and so on.(Dinosaur-beings have been confirmed, our human world is not as simple as it seems.)

Human intelligence may not be the result of natural selection. Perhaps, as mentioned in a document called the Lecerta Files, human intelligence is bestowed by higher intelligent beings called Anunnaki.

Yes, Cha also mentioned that Aquatics and Reptilians are the original intelligent beings on this planet, and we humans have been modified, transformed by extraterrestrial beings called Anunnaki.

Are there civilizations in the depths of the ocean that are more advanced than humans? I'm not sure, I have never seen it. But if that's the case, what are we humans? Are we just domesticated poultry of the Anunnaki, or lowly slaves?

I dare not delve into this question, it would make me even more uneasy. These days of fear and anxiety have exhausted me mentally and physically.

In my restless moments, I miss my family, friends, teachers, and classmates even more. Even if I didn't like some of them, I miss them now. Even those annoying guys who used to bully me.

The person I miss the most is Xiao Bai, my dream girl. She is a petite girl with short hair and wears black-framed glasses that cover half of her face.

Oh my god, why didn't I have the courage to confess to her? If I ever have the chance to return to human society, I will definitely tell her how much I love her.

Late at night, tears well up in my eyes, only abundant tears and clear sadness can make me feel alive.

I am a complete coward, I really hate myself. Why do I lack the courage to end it all? Why don't I dare to oppose them, those monsters?

Every day, I live in the torment of being a walking dead.

That monster also told me that my fate is already intertwined with his, we are in this together. If I leave this world, his life will also come to an end soon. I don't understand what connection exists between us. What prompts us to share life and death? I asked him, but he didn't tell me.

Rationally, I shouldn't believe his nonsense, but emotionally, why not try to believe him once? After all, when he said those words, his attitude was so sincere.

I think the main reason I am bewitched is because of his promise. If I can successfully fulfill the mission (this damn mission that is driving me crazy), they will let me return to the human society unharmed.

Personally, there is nothing more important than going home, absolutely nothing! It is the strongest desire deep in my heart and the last glimmer of light that gives me courage. Without it, oh my god, I don't know what I would become.

I have decided that no matter what they ask me to do, as long as it doesn't endanger my life, I am willing to do it all, just as long as it can really bring me back home. I've had enough of everything in this world, the dirty sky, the pitch-black prison life, the monstrous faces, and the ghostly gaze that makes me tremble with fear.“

  - Diary of Wu Fan

At 6 o'clock in the morning, just as the day was breaking, the dawn revealed a faint light through the leaden clouds. A strong beam of white light pierced through the wall, waking up Wu Fan from his deep slumber. He was greeted by a piercing shout,“45, you lazy bones, wake up! Damn it, when are you going to stop sleeping? Are you planning to sleep until midday, doomsday?“

Cha's voice was alarming, instantly jolting Wu Fan awake from his drowsiness, his sleepy eyes meeting Cha's sharp fangs just inches away.

“Hurry up, you lazy bones”,Cha's tone was far from friendly, but as Wu Fan's dedicated prison guard, he was efficient in his role.

Wu Fan quickly got out of bed and hastily put on his dark gray jacket, which was placed by the bedside. He then hurriedly walked to a small square table, its surface covered with a pair of grayish-white jeans stained with mud. Next to the table leg were a worn-out pair of brown leather boots, his work uniform, bearing the marks of its loyal service. Wu Fan was not its first owner, and whether he would be the last remained uncertain.

Once dressed, he picked up a peculiar concoction from the table. It was the leftover liquid he had drunk the previous night, a murky green substance called“Nutrient Solution No. 5.“ It served as both his sustenance and his toiletries.

He rubbed his hands together with the grayish liquid, as if applying face cream, and haphazardly smeared it on his weathered face. Although it didn't change anything, it provided him with a slight sense of psychological comfort.

He poured the remaining nutrient solution into his mouth and mumbled, making gulping sounds until his mouth made a gurgling noise. He forced himself to swallow the nauseating liquid.

“This is the rule here,”Cha had been so rough and unquestionable in his tone when Wu Fan first arrived.

Under the sharp gaze of Cha, Wu Fan entered the wormhole beside him. He felt genuine delight, no matter how many times he had experienced it. It was an amazing sensation, like stepping into a warm breeze on a summer day.

The wormhole transported him to his destination in the blink of an eye.

Upon emerging from the bright light, he instinctively looked up, hoping to catch sight of something familiar in the distance, be it a person or an object.

Unfortunately, the sky never cooperated. It remained dim and unchanging, shrouded in mist, obscuring his view of anything.

The wind whispered, and the mining field was sparsely populated. Slaves wearing gray-blue work uniforms and experimental subjects in orange-yellow attire were laboring wearily, performing monotonous and heavy tasks. Large trucks carried piles of excavated minerals to each person's designated mining area.(Fortunately, the appearance of those trucks was not much different from those in human society, which was one of the few things that made Wu Fan feel a sense of familiarity, even though they added physical burden to him.)

Their work involved using a specially designed pickaxe to break down piles of minerals, roughly the size of a palm. The processed minerals were then stacked together until there were enough to be collected by specialized machines. These machines were a bizarre form of transportation, equipped with a“square-shaped mouth“ similar to a vacuum cleaner, capable of quickly sucking up the sorted minerals.

Rows of quadcopter drones monitored their every move from the leaden clouds. Low growls occasionally emanated from the clouds, as if something was rapidly emerging and then quickly retreating into the depths of the clouds.

Wu Fan furrowed his brow and gazed for a while. It was a creature, and he was certain it was not a mechanical creation made of steel and iron. Its body was long, with an equally slender tail, and its wings spread out, gliding like a bat rather than flapping like a bird.

The expressions of the experimental subjects, slaves, and observers on the ground were all the same - indifferent and stern, as if wearing masks of deep resentment. As observers, their main task was to observe the various conditions of the target subjects and report to their superiors promptly. They also served as guides for the subjects' lives (although it sounded nice on the surface, they were essentially prison guards).

An area of about 100 square meters served as both the work and rest area for each slave and experimental subject. During lunchtime, the prison guards would bring Nutrient Solution No. 5, and the slaves and experimental subjects would have one to two hours for their meal. Although drinking that substance only took a minute or two, very few could finish it in one gulp. After all, the sour and bitter taste posed a great challenge, both physically and mentally.

Ten mining sites make up a group, each of which is equipped with two soldiers armed with live ammunition and handheld rifles, in addition to the ten observers. These soldiers wear black uniforms and helmets made of a glass-like material (if you are familiar with StarCraft, you would find them similar to the helmets of the Ghosts). The screens on their helmets are made of one-way material, allowing them to observe the outside world while the people outside cannot see their expressions.

Wu Fan was certain that one of them had a round face, another had a donkey-like face, one had sideburns, and another had a mustache. He imagined that they were all smiling, trying hard to hold back their laughter...

The boy was fond of fantasizing and enjoyed gossiping about the soldiers whose expressions he couldn't see. It was one of the few pleasures he had in this place. However, he also understood that most of these“big lizards”(as he liked to call the dinosaur-like beings) had only one expression - a sour face, like a block of wood.

Suddenly, Wu Fan shivered and reflexively looked behind him, meeting Cha's indifferent eyes.

“What's wrong?“ the dinosaur man asked impatiently, biting his lip.

“It's back, that ghostly gaze,”Wu Fan pleaded, his eyes filled with desperation.“It's driving me crazy.“

Cha glanced behind him and said,“You mean him?“ He pointed to a hunched figure, burying his head under a large pile of processed minerals.

“22, come here,“ Cha called out to the person.

The person immediately put down what he was doing and hesitated for a moment. After getting the approval from the observer behind him, he bent over and ran over.

“Hello, sir. Is there something I can help you with?“ he asked timidly.

  “Look up,”Cha instructed.“Look at me.“

22, the experimental subject, lifted his head, revealing a face as black as charcoal.“You were just looking at him, weren't you?”Cha pointed at Wu Fan and asked.

“No, sir, that's absolutely not true,”22 quickly lowered his head again. His voice sounded choked, and his pitiful appearance seemed like he would burst into tears in the next second.

“Alright, you can go back now. You have nothing to do here,”Cha's tone was icy.

“Okay, sir,”22 breathed a sigh of relief and happily ran off, looking like a donkey that had just been relieved of a heavy load.

“Now, do you still think someone is spying on you?”Cha stared at Wu Fan, his attitude towards the boy seemingly reduced to impatience.

“No, sir,”Wu Fan wanted to continue defending himself, but seeing Cha about to explode, and looking at the slaves who bowed and ran away, he could only swallow his dissatisfaction.

“Alright, get back to work. Let's not waste each other's time,”Cha continued,“unless you want to get yourself into trouble.”

Wu Fan suddenly felt an uncontrollable surge of nameless anger welling up inside him. Almost instinctively, he glared at Cha.

Of course, he understood the threat from the dinosaur man. On the second day of his arrival here, he witnessed a scene where a slave wearing a gray-blue outfit shouted back at an observer, defying their orders. In response, two beams of laser shot out from the soldiers' guns, instantly knocking the slave down.

“That's a laser gun, I think you should be familiar with it. However, at this level, it's not lethal, at most it just makes the disobedient person faint for a few hours. Remember, don't cause trouble here,”Cha explained, sensing his fear.

“What's wrong?”Cha's cold words suddenly brought Wu Fan back from his deep memories.

Wu Fan dared not speak his anger. He just lowered his head and said,“Nothing, sir. I understand. I will definitely not cause any trouble.”He picked up his mining pickaxe and continued to work, clanging away. He disliked this version of himself and also disliked the other experimental subjects who seemed to possess a shared trait of accepting their fate. Compared to the slaves, they were far behind. At least the slaves knew how to resist, even though their efforts were mostly in vain.

“Damn it, son of a bitch, you bunch of scoundrels,”Wu Fan cursed in his mind.

As his curses began, a massive fireworks display suddenly exploded in the sky above the base. A blue fireball illuminated the ground, turning the world into a deep blue.

Wu Fan's mind went blank for a moment. A few seconds later, dizziness, buzzing, and a piercing sensation flooded his brain. He instinctively looked behind him and saw Cha covering his ears with a fierce expression. His lips were moving, as if saying something, but Wu Fan couldn't hear a word.

Everything was in chaos. The slaves and experimental subjects cried out and fled in all directions, while the stern reprimands of the observers proved futile. Soon, the observers themselves joined the fleeing crowd. The soldiers attempted to raise their laser guns to maintain order, but they didn't know where to aim.(Were the escapees from the ground or invaders from the sky?)

The drones emitted dazzling light as they disintegrated in the air, turning into electronic debris that scattered on the ground. They were shot down by the beasts soaring in the sky, or more precisely, the figures hidden on the backs of the beasts. These people wore armor and uniforms similar to the imperial soldiers, with the only difference being that the imperial soldiers' armor was mostly dark, while theirs was predominantly bright white.

A quetzalcoatlus raised its head high and swooped down towards the ground. They were ancient creatures with beak-like bills, emitting high-pitched and sharp cries. Their mouths were filled with strong teeth, and they had a snake-like tongue covered in milky white mucus.

Their wings, when spread open, appeared to be a thin layer of grayish-green membrane. Their arms had degenerated, and their palms had evolved into small claws at the top of the membrane.

Figures knelt on their backs, holding reins in one hand and laser guns tightly in the other, firing indiscriminately.

Beams of light darted between the sky and the ground, creating a scene of both devastation and splendor.

Soldiers fell one after another. Wu Fan saw a slave being hit by a beam of light and never getting up again. The enemies in the sky soon faced retaliation from the ground. One quetzalcoatlus had its left wing torn apart by the beams, resembling a malfunctioning aircraft. It skidded along the ground for dozens of meters until it crashed into a neatly stacked pile of uncollected minerals. The person riding on its back was thrown out and landed with a head injury. As soon as his head emerged from the minerals, four or five laser guns fired simultaneously, turning him into a sieve.

All of this happened in just about two minutes. Wu Fan's stagnant thoughts felt like they had experienced a hundred years. Before he could scream in terror due to the proximity of death, a pair of strong hands grabbed him.“Idiot, fool, don't just stand there,”Cha slapped the boy twice, and the dinosaur man's loud shout snapped him back to reality from his shock.

Wu Fan instinctively followed Cha as they fled in all directions. They maneuvered through the dense barrage of firepower, with Cha occasionally shouting at him in anger,“Get down, you idiot!“ and forcefully pushing him to the ground. At other times, he would yell,“Hurry up, idiot!”as he pulled Wu Fan's hand, resembling two deer fleeing for their lives on a battlefield.

More and more people fell in front of them. When Cha saw that it was other observers who had fallen, he would throw himself onto their bodies and take something out of their pockets.

“Ouch!“ Wu Fan let out a cry of pain as Cha's fingertips cut a long gash on his right arm. Fresh blood gushed out, and only then did Cha realize that in his haste to escape, he had neglected to protect the boy by his side.

“I'm such a fool. His body has just been modified, he's just a baby,”Cha muttered to himself.

He held the pale-faced boy tightly and led Wu Fan through a long corridor. The only sounds in the corridor were their heavy footsteps, while the voices of others gradually faded away.

After turning a few corners, they completely separated from the main fleeing group. Cha was familiar with the basic structure of the base and knew that there were secret passages in certain areas, specifically designed for situations like this.

He entered a room, pried open a floorboard, and slipped into a tunnel with Wu Fan.

The tunnel was filled with thick dust and a pungent gas, likely due to long periods of disuse. Cha tore off two pieces from his own white coat and covered his mouth and nose. He quickly fashioned a makeshift mask and placed it on Wu Fan's face. The boy coughed incessantly, feeling suffocated.

Cha then dug out two glowing beads from the walls of the tunnel. He held them up, providing a faint light to guide their way as they waded through ankle-deep water.

They continued deeper into the tunnel, and the light gradually disappeared into darkness. The water had risen above their chests, and Wu Fan felt as if his lungs were being filled with something cold and hard, as if a pair of large hands were tightly gripping his insides.

Cha remained silent as they walked in the darkness. His face was as cold as ice, as if facing a formidable enemy. The darkness was mysterious and dangerous, and it was difficult to guarantee that something wouldn't suddenly emerge and launch an attack.

He held the boy tighter, feeling his faint heartbeat. Cha's footsteps gradually slowed down. At first, he could maintain a pace of one step per second, but later it became one and a half steps per second, and finally one and a third steps per second.

They walked in the dark tunnel for an unknown amount of time until Wu Fan almost fainted from suffocation. Suddenly, a faint light entered his field of vision, and a sweet and refreshing breath of fresh air seeped through the gaps in his mask, entering his nostrils.

Cha flipped open the floorboard above his head and climbed up. He carried Wu Fan out and gently laid him flat on the ground. He turned the boy over so that he was facing the ground, and carefully removed his mask, causing Wu Fan to continue coughing uncontrollably. His coughs came in waves, tears and mucus streaming down his face. Cha tore off a clean piece of white cloth from the lining of his coat and used it to wipe Wu Fan's mouth and nose.

After completing these actions, Cha lay down next to Wu Fan, looking up at the sky. He took deep breaths, gasping for air.

“We finally... finally... escaped,”he said in a broken voice, as if he had survived a disaster.

“What happened, sir?”a weak Wu Fan managed to ask, spitting out a dark green liquid.

“The revolutionary army attacked,”Cha hesitated for a moment, furrowing his brow.“I just didn't expect them to break through the force field so quickly.”

“What is the revolutionary army, sir?”Wu Fan asked.

“They are a group of traitors, an anti-government organization, a despicable and shameless bunch,”Cha replied.

“Perhaps they are a group of brave individuals, fearless patriots who dare to resist the imperial power,”Wu Fan suddenly heard a cold laugh coming from above.

He struggled to sit up and looked at the person. He was astonished. Then he turned to Cha, and the dinosaur man's green face turned slightly pale.

That coward, 22, was holding a laser gun and looking at them with a smile that was not quite a smile.

“Hello, the Empire's lackey.“ 22 moved his mechanism, the sound of ammunition being loaded.

"You, it's always been you."Cha's eyebrows furrowed,"It was you who led the attack this time."

“I have been ordered to take him back.”He pointed at Wu Fan with disdain.“But it's no longer your concern. I thank you, without you, it would have been difficult for us to find him."

Wu Fan suddenly felt a sharp pain in his stomach. The ghostly gaze that had made his heart race for the past few days was not just his imagination.

22, like a victor in a movie, after showing off, would usually proceed to eliminate the enemies who had become losers.

Cha reached into his coat, the action that did not escape 22's eyes.

22 pulled the trigger, and a beam of light struck Cha's chest. His crouching body fell to the ground once again.

Wu Fan opened his mouth wide, wanting to scream, but no sound came out. His fear seemed to be bound, only able to reach a certain point.

“Alright, we should go now. There's no time to waste,”22 reached out to grab Wu Fan's shoulder.

The boy tilted his shoulder, avoiding his grasp. His head was spinning.“Tell me, who are you?“ he blurted out, shocked by his sudden outburst.

“Just like you, we are experimental subjects who were suddenly captured here for research,”22 said in a cold tone.

“So, we are in the same boat,”Wu Fan said, surprised by his own words. He struggled to stand up and slowly approached Cha.

“Squat down!“ 22 shouted,“Don't make any sudden moves. I told you, I'm only here to take you away, to where you should be. Don't resist unnecessarily, and don't waste time.“ His tone was almost a roar, scaring Wu Fan into shrinking his head.

“Where are we going? Tell me, where are you taking me?”Wu Fan licked his dry lips, swallowed his saliva, and anxiously glanced at Cha's lifeless body beside him.

“I can't tell you right now. Just come with me for now,”22 reached out his right hand, and this time, Wu Fan couldn't dodge it.“Ouch!”Wu Fan exclaimed as his injured arm was grabbed by 22.

He had intended to continue resisting, but he was abruptly interrupted by 22's rough voice.“Hurry up, we don't have time. There might be people coming soon.”

Wu Fan had no choice but to follow his instructions. After they had walked a certain distance, he turned his head and silently looked back at Cha lying on the ground. A bitter feeling welled up in his heart. Cha was indeed a scoundrel, but now he was just a lifeless body. Wu Fan thought about his own miserable fate and what Cha had said about being together in life and death. He felt a wave of sadness wash over him.

The two of them gradually moved further away. When they were a distance away, the body lying on the ground suddenly moved.“We will meet again,”Cha said, patting his white coat. He looked in the direction where the two had disappeared, and a smirk appeared on his face.“The test has officially begun, 45, don't disappoint me.”
