Ch 8: Hidden Expert

IImar had looked at Doctor Elaine for almost 2 seconds but it was enough to nearly blind him.

He saw the mystic vein circuits hidden in her body where her mystical energy flowed, the green-gold color enamored him, and he subconsciously focused on the flowing energy which magnified in intensity under the power of the sharingan, his gaze was like a splash of lava and he felt the overwhelming power condensed in that energy as thick as blood and as bright as the sun.

In the final moment, he even glimpsed a humanoid entity with a green crown of thorns and eyes of verdant green.

—‘What in the world was that? And why did looking at her mystic energy feel so painful? The color is unfamiliar too.’

From what he had learned in school mystical energy typically had a light reddish color that got deeper and more dense the higher your realm.

Realms were divisions of power and stages of metamorphosis of one's magical energy in this world. It was no exaggeration to say you evolved into a different being in each realm.

There was also the vague silhouette with a crown of thorns that he saw.

Was this the equivalent to a tailed beast?!

What exactly was that?

IImar felt he had seen something he shouldn’t have seen and the Doctor’s increasingly sharp gaze further pointed to this.

“Say my dear little Freed, what exactly did you see just now?” She calmly asked as if it didn’t matter at all.

But IImar knew if he answered wrongly he could be in danger. Doctor Elaine was known as a saint due to her kind acts and record of helping poor persons free of cost but she was far from a soft persimmon.

The brain damaged men who thought only with their lower body currently being in a coma were living proof of this.

“I-I didn’t see anything. Nothing at all.” IImar stammered. Dear me this goddess in the hearts of man was a verifiable hidden expert!

IImar gulped nervously seeing the Doctor examine his expression.

—‘Hm. As a newbie awakener he shouldn’t be able to see much at all. It’s already outrageous enough that he was able to look for even a second. This kid, what kind of ability did he end up awakening.’

Elaine was sure she knew 38 000 of the 39 000+ recorded abilities. She could confidently claim she knew 9/10 of all abilities, it was the remainder that she was concerned about.

The most likely situation if she checked and didn’t find out what ability it was despite IImar being aware of the name…

—‘Did he choose Aurudamir, the epic ritual?’

The more she thought about it the more she was sure that this was likely the case.

Only abilities gained from the God of Epics were truly unique and unlikely to be inherited or randomly awakened in the ceremony, the abilities given by the other gods were almost completely recorded and the only special situation capable of such an ability without any strong likeness to any prior pupil talents was that it was born out of the epic ritual.

There were other scenarios as well but the destitute IImar didn’t have any of that within his possession but it was too soon to say, he could have been lucky or gained investment from someone.

The signs pointed to her guess being true however.

The Epic Ritual was a gamble many ambitious and lazy people both chose it as their final gamble.

—‘I was wondering why he suddenly became good at telling stories, i thought it was to get girls but I heard he has only one in his heart although her reputation is a bit… to think he was hiding it all along and was practicing for the epic ritual.’

“Okay, I believe you.” Seeing the nervous IImar almost forgetting to breathe she laughed and released him from his mental binds, “Hold still.”

While the deflated IImar finally heaved a sigh of relief she stop him and waved her hand.

A tattoo of a purple flower with three layers of oval leaves briefly appeared on her delicate had before a little girl about the size of a four year old child appeared yawning widely.

She had purple hair big yellow eyes and a golden halo above her head as she floated in the air beside Elaine.

“Huh? Juu?”

IImar said in surprise, as far as he knew he only ever got the lantern head for treatment. He only met Juu by accident once and became familiar with her.

“Juuu~”

She exclaimed only making that sound.

After stretching her tiny arms for awhile she grabbed his face and looked at him.

She lightly headbutted him after a short while and then turned to Doctor Elaine.

“Juuu. Ju. Ju. Ju. Juuu. Ju. Ju.” She began conversing with Doctor Elaine.

“Hm. No injury at all spiritual or physical you say?” Doctor Elaine made an odd expression.

Surely not, right? An ability capable of briefly seeing her just after awakening should be a purely spiritual type and would have almost certainly suffered damage from gazing at her even if it was only for a brief moment.

For his eyes to be okay and only suffer from a light shock was unthinkable, that must mean he was a mixed or variant type with elements of either both physical and mystical or physical and spiritual, all three types or something else entirely.

The first two would require a very high level for Freed's situation to occur; this Elaine was sure of as she had met several people with those abilities.

Yet from what Juu also told her the level of his ability was just at the Fading Ember level.

Things were getting stranger by the minute.

IImar was slapped goodbye by the cute and lazy little Juu who immediately went back to sleep and vanished from the room but IImar was still in a daze from his body suddenly feeling rejuvenated.

His eyes felt even better than he had when he just awakened and his body even more so.

As ironic as it might sound, he felt reborn.

Like he had a new body.

—‘Who knew Juu could heal, i thought she was just a strange humanoid pet or something’

Before he could sense carefully Doctor Elaine’s beautiful eyes landed on him again; staring at him weirdly.

He froze like a mouse seeing a cat.

—‘She didn’t change her mind and is going to settle accounts with me is she?’

Elaine felt like she discovered a new continent, was this really the same bullied weak kid who sometimes sobbed under the sheets when he thought she couldn’t hear?

Seeing his nervous expression she decided to let it go for now, she would understand his ability in due time.

—‘Besides whatever he saw was only for a brief moment and it might have really been nothing, Juu is a much bigger secret and he already knows about her so it should be fine. It was an accident but now that he has become a mystic he will likely surmise her true identity before long. How troublesome. Though i suppose both situations are practically the same.’

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

Seeing the IImar avert his gaze from her to the ceiling admiring the composition of the wall she cursed and sent him off.

“Alright off with you now you lucky little mischievous imp. Being healed by Juu is something many would hope for but never attain. You are now one of six people aside from myself. Your body should now feel the same as if you drank the basic ‘Nutrient Solution’ without the hunger satiety effect. You’ve been here for several hours now, I'm sure your family is anxiously awaiting your news.”

I-Imp?

IImar was taken aback by the name but when she mentioned his family he suddenly felt uneasy.

—‘Ah yes. Now that i’m an awakener i can help them move to a different house in the middle district.’

But would they accept his gift? He felt it was unlikely to happen immediately but they might eventually succumb.

IImar didn't plan this far ahead before because he was afraid of the disappointment if he failed or obtained a different ability like [Toad Summoning] or [Chidori].

So now he really was a Mystic in the flesh.

A Class C citizen with privileges.

He could walk in the streets without fear he would be whimsically abused or killed.

The police would answer his calls and take him seriously.

He could no longer be forced to be anyone’s lover.

“What’s with you Freed? I said you could leave.” Elaine found IImar’s expression an odd reaction being told he could go back home to his family.

“Ah, I’m no longer Freed Williams. I go by IImar now.” IImar replied.

“???” Elaine felt the conversation direction took an odd turn. How did this turn into a name change?!

IImar explained that he had cut ties with his family for being an unworthy son but didn’t explain further.

Elaine felt it wasn’t her place to pry so she kept quiet.

“Oh– The school sent someone to tell you to check in when you woke up to register you ability and change your file. Congratulations, you’re now a Class C citizen with all the benefits.”

IImar said his thanks but his mind was turbulent from the topic of his family being brought up.

He couldn't exactly leave them out to dry, barely scraping by, as poor F class citizens lower than a fly.

But how exactly should he help them out and still keep his distance?

Should he go back if even just temporarily?

As he made his way through the door deep in thought he heard a wonderful voice behind him.

“What’s your last name?”

“?” IImar stopped in his tracks.

Seeing his puzzlement Elaine continued, “You said you gaze yourself the name IImar right, the same as the Sword Sage but will you be keeping your last name Williams?”

“Ah.” IImar exclaimed in surprise, he hadn’t thought much about it but surely that was an issue to be resolved, the name IImar was not exactly that uncommon so he needed to distinguish himself if only for that reason.

It didn’t take him long to decide however.

It was almost a certainty what his last name would be.

He had the signature ability and it was only right he paid homage to the true lineage.

“Uchiha. IImar Uchiha.”

He responded with a bright smile.

****

IImar headed over to the registration office to document his ability and apply for his citizen certificate since he was now qualified to have one and it was standard practice to do so through the school.

IImar had no issues with this and intended to follow the procedure.

The registration area was a converted classroom from his usual school building so it was easy to find.

“Name?” The male clerk said in annoyance once he stated his purpose.

These newbie awakeners were too gung-ho and reality hadn’t set in yet.

They said so many words like firing a rapid fire shotgun series and tossed all their aspirations to be like past heroes and current powerhouses frivolously.

Lower your chests and visions okay? It's not gonna happen. He had thought barely amused.

Sure they had awakened and ascended Classes but the difference between those with abilities and without was like a chasm particularly for the majority who came from poor households.

It would take at least a few years for them to see any real results from awakening.

“IImar Uchiha.”

“Oh.”

“You’re not on the list.”

Although the number of students was astronomical the school naturally had a detailed track of them due to the laws and their duties.

“It would have been Freed Williams but now I’m changing it to IImar Uchiha.”

—‘Tsk, another one of the name goons. As if an extra awesome middle name or changing your first name makes a difference.’

The male clerk visibly snorted as he changed the name on file. It was not a rare occurrence to change one’s name after awakening.

Some did it to match their abilities, others wanted to sound cool, and some poor fellows like orphans had been given atrocious names by the state like Bush Brown and took the opportunity to change it.

“Done.”

“Now do you have any abilities, if so please state and we will commence the exam if not then please fill out the form before you and commence with the—” The clerk mechanically went through the motions before IImar could properly answer.

“Yes.” IImar replied.

“Yes what? I said if you don’t have an ability then—”

“I have an ability.” IImar commented.

“Yes so, wait what?” The clerk halted.

“I said — nevermind.” IImar was about to reply once again but saw the reaction of the clerk who no doubt had to deal with him as one of the last awakeners when the ones with talents would have come from the beginning and some wouldn’t come here at all and use their families instead.

So he had probably seen hundreds of awakeners without abilities today.

Therefore he felt it was faster to show him instead of wasting time.

Seeing IImar’s eyes turn blood red with a drop of ink, the clerk finally realized what was happening.

“On-One second let me go fetch my boss.” The clerk quickly abandoned his post. Those at his level weren’t qualified to document talent awakeners.

They were too much of an important human resource.

With the rampant anti-human cults and other evil organisations it was also decreed that only someone who had made a vow at the church could do the procedures since files had been tampered with before.

Ordinary ability awakeners were not that attractive to cults so the risk of their files being tampered with as they were brainwashed, kidnapped or willingly defected at this stage were low since it would eventually alert the higher ups and lose a valuable pawn within the system for just a few ordinary awakeners.

The cults were crazy, not stupid.

Soon the clerk returned with a tall man with brown hair and a prominent mustache. He wore a thin blade on his left hip and a gun on his right. A gas mask hung on his neck.

“IImar Uchiha right. Come with me.”

He curtly ordered before leaving without looking if IImar would follow him.

IImar was brought to a room with several machines, he was directed to an old machine not as sparkly as the other clearly well maintained and new models but didn't complain.

“It looks out of place compared to the rest but pupil ability users are rare after all and the variations aren't as numerous as some other categories like the elementals. Still that machine is only 20 years old and runs well.”

Seeing his puzzlement and looking back and forth between his machine and the others the invigilator explained.

IImar placed his head on the headrest attached to the equipment similar to an eye testing machine and quickly finished his test without much issue.

Name: Unknown

Abilities detected: Enhanced Visual Acuity, Micro Processing???, Spiritual??, Analysis??, ???, unable to be detected.

“Strange, to think there's so many things it's unable to see.” The mustached man whispered to himself. Analyzing the further information provided on the sheet produced by the machine he recognised that this ability met the requirements as most fields had x's or question marks or simply unable to be detected.

This was exactly what the researchers in the school and the district's association would pay a high price for as an invigilator he would also get some of the soup.

Furthermore a Fading Ember talent with six different abilities or more was comparable to a Bright Spark talent.

“Congratulations, this ability meets the requirements and can supplement our knowledge base. You can receive 100 silvers for detailing your abilities and 1000 silvers for cooperating with those researchers for testing.”

The mustached man quickly fetched a tablet made of a weird resin like material with faint flickering times on the back and started tapping and swiping.

“Okay. Now what are your abilities?”

He asked after finding what he was looking for.

While the machines were inaccurate and could miss information as talents were given by Gods even if it was a new talent the user would have a vague idea of what he or she could do.

He waited for a while and saw IImar deep in thought.

“Young man time is precious. I'm afraid we can't dilly dally for much longer.” The invigilator said with mild annoyance.

IImar gasped, snapping out of his little mental abacus and replied, “Yes of course. I'll pass on that. Anything else?”

The mustached invigilator was taken aback, he had read IImar’s file and knew he was poor even if he was born a C class citizen 100 silvers was not spare change.

Who in their right mind would refuse?

The assisting researchers irked some awakeners since most were ordinary pawn folk or awakeners with weird personalities but just explaining your abilities was simple and didn't require much effort.

Due to this the invigilator suspected he heard wrongly and asked again.
