Within the School

Within the School

Waking up and looking at the a mirror he has in his room, Ozwald Griffins, is currently testing out facial expressions to see what looks natural. All of them look very convincing to Ozwald, well all of them but one, his full teeth smile. Looking at his reflection he sees a young boy with dark black hair, light blue eyes, and a menacing smile. With a smile like that even a cute child would look terrifying.

Sighing and deciding mentally to never show his teeth when he smiles, Ozwald finishes getting dressed and then ready for school. The school his is going to is magus and warrior family exclusive, so they actually have a uniform even for first graders like Oz. After brushing his teeth Oz ran out his door and down the halls to reach where library where Jade would be this early.

Reaching the library of the house Oz walks in to find Jade using magic to clean the place up a bit. She looks his way before stopping the magic and saying, “Oz good morning, your lunch for school today is on the table there.” She walks over and gives Oz a hug before finishing, “Have fun at school and make sure to say goodbye to Sebas before you leave.”

Oz smiles back at her, making sure not to show his teeth, before saying goodbye. “Seeya later Jade, thanks for the lunch.” After saying that Oz ran out the library with lunch in hand and made his way to Sebastian.

Seeing Oz running towards him putting his lunch in his bag Sebastian waves to the young boy before saying, “Morning Oz, you all ready for school today?”

Oz hardly containing his excitement replied with a smile, “Yep I’m super ready for school I’ll tell you all about my first day when I get home.” After saying his bit Oz resumes his run out of the house. Most everyone in this house ignores the young boy so he just does the same. If not for Jade and Sebastian, Oz might not have had anyone to talk to.

Making his way outside Oz recales the way to school in his head. Being a member of a high ranking magus family his house was located quite close to the school, and so it would not take Oz long to reach the school from his house. While making his way to the school Oz looked at some of the cars passing by and noticed that some of them had students being driven. To pass the time Oz started to count the number of students and also try to remember their faces.

Halfway to the school at this point Oz spots another young boy wearing the same uniform as him. The boy also taking notice of Oz smiles and greets him, “Hey, were going to the same school. My name is Jack I’m going into the first grade today. Since we live so close to each other and both walk to school we should be friends. What grade are you going into?”

Ozwald seeing the friendly face of this stranger was slightly stunned for a second before smiling and replying, “Nice to meat you Jack. My name is Ozwald, but you can call me Oz. I’m also going into the first grade and would like to be your friend.” This was Ozwalds first time making a friend or even talking to someone his age. He was a little nervous and also a little relieved at how easy it was to make friends.

Jack puts his fist in the air and smiles widely while saying, “Yes first friend get. Lets keep walking to school together from now on Oz. I have a feeling we’ll be great friends, come on lets see if anyone else walked today.” Practically dragging Oz with him they make their way to school. Seeing how fast Oz was Jack couldn’t help but ask, “Hey Oz have you opened any of the gates yet?”

Not seeing any problem in telling his new friend the truth Oz happily replies, “Yep I’ve even opened two of them the mind and speed ones.”

Jack replies with his bright green eyes practically shining, “That’s awesome Oz, I’m close to being able to open my speed one, and I’ve started preparing for the muscle one. You’ve opened not only one, but two gates already you must have good talent. I’ve only got average talent in wind and fire affinities.”

Wanting to avoid the topic of affinities Oz, spotting the perfect opportunity changes topics, “Hey Jack look another person is walking besides up, this time it looks like a girl.” Before Jack has a moment to say anymore Oz walks up to the girl before greeting her, “Hey I’m Oz and he’s Jack, it looks like we’re all walking to school. What’s your name?”

The girl, albeit shyly, managed a response, “Nice to meet you Oz and Jack, my names Alice. Um.. would you like to walk together to school?”

Jack responded in a similarly shy manner, “Nice to meet you Alice, my names Jack. Um.. I would like to walk together to school with you.”

Letting out a little chuckle that made both of them look at him Oz said, “Alright then let’s go to school, before we’re late.” A bit of the tension in the air was released as they made their way to school.

Alice and Jack were starting to ease up, with Oz being the head of most conversations. Alice talked about her affinity. Apparently she had average light affinity and proceeded to ask Jack and Oz about theirs. Jack happily told her which caused her to look at Oz for his response.

Seeing he had no way out of it this time Oz sighed and said, “Well I actually have bad affinities with all elements.” Alice and Jack were both surprised, Jack even more so as he said with admiration in his eyes, “That makes the fact that you opened two gates even better. You must have worked really hard, I have average affinites and still haven’t opened any. That’s it from now on I’m going to work twice as hard and catch up to you Oz.”

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

Alice was now stunned silent and Jack had passion in his eyes as they walked silently into the school. They followed the signs and ended up in an auditorium with a bunch of other students around.

Before they had time to process what was going on a loud voice boomed within the auditorium, “Now that all the students are here it’s time to welcome in a new year here at our school. We’ll be welcoming our first years to this school for the very first time while the fifth through sixth graders many of you have been here before…”

The speech was pretty boring to Oz and he had zoned out through most of it. In fact it was hard for him to even hear it, and it seemed that he was the only one with this problem. Then it came time for the first years to head to class. The first four classes were math, english, history, and science. After the first four was lunch. The last two classes were specialised for magus or warriors and had plenty of different courses to choose from.

On their way to the first class Jack asked Oz and Alice, “Hey I’m taking the basic warrior and the basic weapons classes for my last two how about you guys?” Alice chimed in, “I’m taking the basic magus and basic supporter classes.” Oz answered right after, “I’ll be with Jack in the basic warrior class, and in the basic martial arts class after.”

Jack was happy that his new friend seemed to be a warrior like him only specialising in martial arts. Alice on the other hand was sad she still hadn’t made friends with any other magus, she was still happy that she had found some friends however. Oz seeing her sad look said, “Well although I am taking warrior classes I’m from a magus family.”

Alice realising her sad look must have been seen blushed. Jake looked at Oz with a puzzled face before saying, “So Oz if your from a magus family how come you want to be a warrior?”

Alice taking notice of that fact as well looks at Oz for answers. Giving it to their looks Oz sighs saying, “Well because my talent is so low I can’t learn any of my families techniques so I decided to become a warrior instead.” After satisfying the twos curiosity they made their way into the classroom and the first class soon started. Oz, Jack, and Alice all sat closer to the warrior side as they were all more welcomed there then the magus side.

The first class was math and pretty normal. Oz knew all the questions asked so he would answer whenever he could. Every time he did answer all the kids in the magus section would give him dirty looks. Some of the warrior kids couldn’t help but laugh at the sight of ‘one of their own’ beating the magus at their own game.

After math was english, then history, and lastly science. The classes went pretty much the same as the first one. Oz knew most all the content and would answer questions when he could. This resulted in the magus side being split. Some simply admired his intelligence regardless of whether or not he was a warrior. Yet most didn’t like this show off warrior in the slightest and would show him up if they ever got the chance.

Finally came lunchtime and none of the magus went near Oz and crew, but the warriors were more than happy to. They talked for a bit and asked what classes they would all be in. They were all happy with bing in their first class. Some were even happier to learn they would be in martial arts with Oz and thought they made the right choice, even though they were the minority. They were surprised to learn that Alice was a mage, but understood why she was with the warriors after she said her second class. Most mage looked down on supporters and warriors alike so the enemy of my enemy is my friend right.

Shortly after the discussion they seperated into groups to eat lunch. Most of the kids didn’t pack, but Jack, Alice and Oz all did. Jack had a lunch his dad had thrown together for him. Alice had a nice looking simple lunch that she made. Lastly Oz his lunch was simple, but large, it was about three times the size of Jacks.

The other two were stunned at the size of Oz’s lunch, and then even more stunned when he started eating. He was fast, yet calm while eating. Deciding that it was just one of the many things that was weird about their friend, Jack and Alice started eating their lunch.

After finishing lunch Jack and Oz made their way to the basic warrior class, while Alice sadly had to go to the magus class. Making their way inside the classroom they were greeted by a large indoor training room with multiple sets of training equipment lined on the side. A burly man with a large beard addresses the students in a booming voice, “Hey first years, I’m your teacher Mr. Bullard, and for today I’m going to show you how to use the training equipment. After that just start to do whatever basic training you can. I want to get a good idea where all of you stand right about now.”

Showing them how to use the equipment the kids went about doing some basic training. All of these kids were from warrior families and had all done at least some training before. It was obvious very quickly the ones who had trained more than others. Jack showed that he was very close to opening his speed gate like he said.

Oz on the other hand was almost out of control. He wanted to try out every piece of equipment, and was not satisfied without pushing his limits on every single one. At first the teacher thought he was showing off and would quickly become tired before finishing using all the equipment. Oz would soon prove him wrong. The equipment Oz had never used was now helping him stimulate muscles he could never get on his own. He wanted to get the most out of this and he could always monitor his own fatigue so Oz was very efficient with his training.

While finishing the last bit of his training all eyes were on Oz. When he was finally done Oz sat down on the ground to catch his breath when suddenly Jack laughed out from the crowd, “No wonder you could get so strong Oz, if that’s your basic training.”

Realizing his mistake Oz quickly apologized to the teacher, “Sorry Mr. Bullard, I was just so excited to use new equipment that I quickly went overboard.” Laughing it off like it was nothing Mr. Bullard said with a smile, “No problem, Oz was it, your fine to do that if you want. Just sit there and rest while I help correct the other students training a little bit. I’ll give you some tips and help at the start of next class, as I don’t think you’ll be fully recovered by the end of class.”

The rest of the class when just like he said. Mr. Bullard helped the other students with correcting their training, while Oz rested. By the time class was over Oz had lowered his fatigue by a lot and thanks the teacher, before parting with Jake and making his way to the basic martial arts class. Walking in the classroom Oz was greeted by a similar sight the room was almost the same as the basic warrior class. The only differences were the amount and type of equipment. The equipment was also of a lower quality, but Oz not having much to reference it on was none the wiser.
