Within the Family

Within the Family

Ozwald Griffins the black sheep of the Griffins family. Born into a magus family with negative talent in all affinities, while his twin Grizwald has high talent in all affinities. It's been five years since Oz was born and he hasn’t seen either of his parents since he was born.

He hasn’t lived a bad life, his parents didn’t spare any expense when it came to his care, they just never did it themselves. The people who took care of him most of the time where one of two people. The first an old butler named Sebastian who showed Oz some basic exercises and proper etiquette that he now practices every day near the garden. The other a young woman named Jade who taught Oz how to speak, read, write, you name it.

He absorbed knowledge like a sponge, and Jade not knowing any self restraint taught him everything from every textbook she could find. Whenever he finished a textbook she would sit down with him and watch some anime. The whole time while watching it she required him to put himself in the place of the main character and then afterwards write Jade an essay about what he would do differently.

This was something they had to keep secret from Sebastian. She only did it to get Oz into anime so she would have someone to talk to about it. Oz truly like watching the anime and then writing about it, because it actually helped him out. When watching a particular anime the main character had a game system window in front of them. While Oz was putting himself in the main characters shoes he suddenly saw a game system of his own.

Well at least he had something, Oz was content with just this much. This was enough to make Oz to ‘like’ anime more as he started looking for something which might help with his own system.

Jade was very happy that Oz seamed to enjoy anime at least, she wanted him to have a hobby like normal kids, as all he used to be interested in was getting smarter and getting stronger. One day after his daily exercises Sebastian went up to Oz and handed him a bottle of water, “Hey Oz it's official you’re going to start school in six months. It's a school with that had both magus and warrior classes in it so which do you want to attend?”

Grabbing the water and taking a big gulp Oz replied, “Thanks Sebastian, I want to attend the warrior classes since I can’t be a mage.”

“Well that’s your choice and I won't stop you, just be careful you are still a member of a magus family after all.” Sebastian says while patting Oz’s shoulder then walking off to finish his work.

For the next three months Oz continued his daily routine of exercise, study, anime, and messing with his system. What Oz found out was that the it was the most incomplete, buggiest, piece of shit system ever created.

During one of his study sessions with Jade Oz was getting a headache at the start of the lesson. The headache kept getting worse and worse, but he kept going. Oz felt he was clawing up a huge wall in his mind and felt that falling would lead to something worse than just a headache. His headache had reached its peak after finishing a textbook and Oz felt like his head would actually explode soon.

Jade noticing he was pale and looked tired sat him down on a couch and turned on one of his ‘favourite’ animes, one with a system. Out of habit Oz put himself in the place of the main character and that’s when the explosion in his head that was building up finally went off. Oz very quickly lost consciousness. The last this he saw was his system.

When he woke up Oz looked around and found himself in his room. After sighing in relief he apologized to his system as he called it useless, but it struck back with a vicious headache. Even more it finally had some stat values. Double checking what his values were Oz realized that he really couldn’t be a mage as his mana was locked at zero. Seeing that his intelligence was at 10 Oz figured the it is what triggered his system to rank up so to speak.

Over the next three months until he had school Oz determined to raise his other stats to rank up his system. Nothing new happened in his schedule, but Jade started to have Oz watch a little more anime and seemed to be paying closer attention to him. With only a month left to go until Oz started school, it happened again.

This time during one of his daily exercises his body started to burn, and similar to his headache last time it kept getting worse until he finally got over the ‘wall’. This time when he finally came to a rest he didn’t pass out, but lost all strength in his body instead. Sebastian seeing his exhausted state came over with a concerned look on his face and asked, “Oz don’t beat yourself up to hard you’ve got school in about a month ya know. Are you okay right now?”

After finally catching his breath Oz said in a low voice, “I’ve just passed a wall I felt in my limits and lost all my strength I should have it back after a quick rest. It happened in a similar way while studying two months ago, this should be similar.”

Hearing what Oz said Sebastian struggled from stumbling over before asking, “Oz can you tell me exactly what happened both times this happened?” Due to his exhausted state it took Oz a couple of minutes to tell Sebastian what had happened. While he was telling him this he also regained some strength and checked his system.

Oz was pleased with the changes after working so hard. After Oz was done explaining what happened Sebastian looked his wide smile before sighing and saying. “Oz what you experienced is called the birth gates. They are the first gate in each of the five series mind, bone, muscle, speed, and will. Each one requires a good amount of talent and effort, which shows how hard you’ve been pushing yourself. From what you’ve explained it seems you’ve opened the mind and speed birth gates. The strange part about you opening the gates is that usually a techniques is used to open them giving the user a skill related to that gate. Doing it your way is not only harder, but also doesn’t give you any skills. The plus side to this is that we don’t have any techniques that you can use anyways due to your negative affinity to all elements. So while you wont get any skills this is the only way you can open gates to get stronger.”

A fire lights up in Oz’s eyes are he responds in a tired yet resolute voice, “That’s perfect this way I can get stronger, I’ll just have to focus on learning combat techniques instead of skills. Besides I think everyone relies on skills too much this way is much better. I can push my limits to open gates while perfecting and practicing new techniques.”

Sebastian contemplated Oz’s words and thought that he was actually right. Imagine if a mage spent all of his mental energy creating a new and powerful spell of his own. If the spell was above the mage’s current abilities, perfecting the new spell would most certainly open the next gate. He decided that it would be best to test this theory later so he stopped and turned to Oz saying, “You should rest for the rest of the day, I’ll take you back to your room.”

Using one hand Sebastian picked up Oz and carried him to his room. Oz fell asleep on the way to his room so Sebastian just laid him on his bed. A little while lated Oz felt a tingle in his mind and woke up, looking around seeing he was in his room by himself he checked the system.

… Mana:000 … Fatigue:000 … Int:10 ... Agi:10 …

Seeing his fatigue at zero Oz guesses that this is the reason he was woken up. What a nice function now he would know when he was pushing it too hard or when he was fully rested. This was the case as Oz’s efficiency over the next month had increased. Sebastian chalked it up to opening his mind and speed gate both opening. Jade had chalked it up to his excitement for school. Over the month Oz had managed to increase his Int and Agi to eleven before the first day of school had finally arrived.
