Chapter 1: Cascade

Chapter 1: Cascade

The woman grunted as she fell from the shattered galvanized iron sheet roof, caressing the gash in her left arm in an attempt to lessen the pain. She also jerked her left leg violently in an effort to divert her attention from the agonizing pain shooting down her leg. Her quiet moans of agony was all she could mutter, her vision blurring as the impact of her fall severely damaged her physique.

Her arms are spread out on the floor as she catches her breath before deciding to get up and walk it off. A sting in her lungs was enough to convince her that she should have died in the fall. The smaller woman closed her eyes and observed how being at ease on the chilly floor caused her breathing to become steady.

No one should find her in this state, so she took precautions to prevent herself from dozing off.

She could barely hold her arms up to support her head while sitting up due to the pain, but as long as both of her legs could move, she was fine. The throbbing pain that she received from being forcefully held up in the air was an experience for her, she couldn’t lie that it was amazing but the after-math was something she wouldn’t wanna go through. Eyeing her surroundings to find herself inside a warehouse, a used one.

The woman was surprised that the people around her didn’t try to investigate the sounds of metal falling on to each other.

“Neunis – Are you okay?” Neunis’ head rang; she hated how she’s trying to talk to her telepathically, not that she couldn’t respond to her back, it was a stupid question to ask. “ … Be quiet.” She spoke in a lower tone, almost as if it was a whisper.

Gathering all of her strength and attempting to stand up while her arms are almost paralyzed, she could stay for the night but it was too risky.

Neunis ended up in a small quiet city where there is a strict curfew that not even adults can break; it was too dangerous to go out at midnight in this dystopian society, she reasoned. It’s been a while since she stepped foot on this earth. Her initial instinct was to break into a random thrift store to get some decent clothing; she was almost naked at this point. Using her foot to kick the glass door to try and pry the lock from the inside, she looked around for any dark-colored clothes.

She did steal a medkit on her way out to try to tend her awful gash and ease her bruise from every direction she looks at, sitting in an opened dog shelter to avoid being caught outside by patrols, rocking her head back not letting a sound as she shakily and lousily stitch her wounds with a stapler, that’s all she could ever find inside the store and there was no pharmacy to break into.

Neunis opened the bottle with her free hand and poured disinfectant directly on her wound, biting the small cloth she had stolen as well, silencing her screams of agony, the stinging sensation was more painful than when she had fallen just hours before, taking her sweet time to let the pain pass before patching it up.

“Neunis, speak to me.” Her head rang once again.

“Could you … quit talking to me.” Neunis could barely form a coherent sentence.

“I just want to make sure you are still alive.”

Neunis held her arm up to lay it on her stomach, making sure it didn't land on her discomfort. "I wish I wasn't," she grumbled. "What did they say? Are they done with me?"

  “I am … not sure.”

“Stop trying to contact me in my head, it hurts.”

Neunis was deeply frustrated at this point, out of all the people that had been brought into this hellhole of a world, she was the unlucky one to meddle in their business. Her blood was something she couldn’t change, and yet they never miss a chance to show her how troubled she truly is.

Amaranthine is one of the wires that she could somehow trust, and the other deity that is not Amaranthine’s kind was the one tormenting her, using her to get on to the Earth. The situation was unclear for Neunis, she tried to understand but all her effort was practically in vain.

“Meet me back to where you landed.”

Neunis jerked her head in confusion,

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

  “What?”

“Meet me there right away if you don't want your head to hurt, don't make me repeat myself.” Amaranthine said.

The smaller woman rose from her seat, tying her arm that replicates a splint. Walking all the way back to the warehouse.

“Will I shake the hands of those who broke me deeply just to feel some hope that my life will ever change?” she thought.

Only she could see the blood trails that were visible as the distraught woman walked the silent road. She questions whether being alive is something to be held in high regard, protected, and maintained at all costs if her purpose was to entirely break her own mind.

The breeze touched her skin as she walked along the road in the dead of night, and the coldness calmed her raven-colored hair. She tries to maintain a calm demeanor, but she just can't shake the enraged emotions she is experiencing.

Neunis reached the warehouse, the very place where she had landed quite harshly. Finding to see a huge void of a woman, Amaranthine. She didn’t try to hurry her steps even if it was still far, she could see the hunk of a female that was standing so stiff, looking at the warehouse’s entrance. It looks like she was deep into thoughts, gathering all the words she could possibly announce to Neunis. She wasn’t excited to hear what Amaranthine had to say, all she could think of at the moment was … pure frustration, and hunger.

“What do you want?” Neunis spoke first,

“I have some important news.” Amaranthine replied.

“ … ? ” Neunis couldn’t even stand straight at this point, she was slouching over.

  “The Arcanea,”

“What about the Arcanea?” Neunis uttered in confusion.

  “They’re looking for you.”

“Considering they can't enter, I believe it would be best for you to remain in your own world, but you won't have much time before they figure it out.” Amaranthine continued.

Neunis looked at Amaranthine dead in the eyes, shrugging the off warning before turning her heels around and walking away. The Arcanea wasn’t so much of a threat for her, it doesn’t faze her one bit.

“Hey! Where are you heading off to? I’m not do-”

“I am part arcanean too? They can’t lay their hands on me but verbally abuse me or … or lay a curse on me. Even the curse that they have laid on me years ago was trashed.” Neunis slightly raised her voice.

“If there is one thing I know about, is that they can’t hurt their own kind, that’s their weakness among themselves. And for some reason, since I’m not like them as a whole, they can still try to harm me. But, that is something that I don’t care about anymore. If anything, you Wires are going to be the end of me if you don’t leave me alone. Acting like my savior when all of you are the same as them, earning my trust and then … blowing it into smithereens. Amaranthine, I don’t even know if I trust you too. I’ve made a mistake, and I won’t let it happen again.” Amaranthine was left speechless hearing Neunis speak her heart out, was it because of the fall that had damaged her head like this?

Neunis broke the silence after her sentences and said, “Just tell them that I died from the fall, tell them they’ve won.”

“I’m done. Don’t talk to me anymore.” She added, finally speaking her last words with Amaranthine.

The wire observed Neunis walking carelessly as if one of her legs were uneven; she could see that she was having difficulty moving, but she was determined to do things her way. This is why it never succeeds. In any case, Neunis is still a young girl who makes rash decisions and it makes her surprised by how far she has come. Amaranthine could give her credit for that.

Amaranthine respects her decision at this time, though she is not sure if she’s able to keep that respect any time soon, not contacting her in times of need is one of her weaknesses. She is her weakness.

“That was the shortest meeting I have ever attended before in my life. Well, I’m glad. I wouldn’t wanna spend another time talking nonsense with her. Stupid.” Neunis said with such venom in her tone, walking around with a replicate splint on her arm as her other arm were free.

Neunis decided where life takes her starting tonight, on the streets, kidnapped, or enslaved, anything but deities trying to get under her skin; she would accept.

But, if there’s something she can’t ignore, it’s her hunger. At this point, she is starving, and someone who is hungry cannot continue; however, she was in need of a bite and didn't care about continuing.

On the other side, Amaranthine was worried for her safety, but she can’t interfere in her life if she wants her gone, that’s the downfall of the pact that they’ve made with each other, she listens to whatever Neunis orders her to do, if she wants Amaranthine to disappear out of her life, she would do so.
