Whispering Realms: Echoes of Fate
Prologue - Relics of Time

Prologue - Relics of Time

The sun hung low in the sky, casting a long shadow across the dense Amazon rainforest. Birds sang their evening songs and the distant sounds of the jungle created an ambient melody. Hidden among this natural splendor an ancient temple stood in silence, its stone walls holding stories from centuries past. This long-forgotten structure concealed by towering trees and creeping vines was a testament to a civilization lost to time.

Inside, the vast main chamber was a maze of shadows and whispers. Statues of deities, some standing tall, others worn away or fragmented, lined the periphery. The walls were a canvas of stories, intricately carved and showcasing scenes of celestial events, epic battles, and mythical creatures—the history and tales of an ancient civilization. Some areas of the chamber had succumbed to time, with collapsed columns and eroded inscriptions, while others seemed almost untouched.

The echo of methodical tapping and soft brushing filled the air in the dimly lit chamber. Leo, a young archaeologist with a fire of curiosity in his hazel eyes, worked diligently, uncovering artifacts and relics that hadn’t seen the light of day in millennia. Absorbed in his work, he gently brushed away layers of sediment from a stone tablet in front of him, revealing an intricate script. The cool, musty air of the temple was thick with the smell of history, and every artifact was a voice from the past yearning to be heard. Leo's fingers danced over the tablet, tracing symbols he’d never encountered in his studies. He had only just graduated from university last year and this was his first real expedition to a remote and ancient ruin. "Every piece here is a puzzle waiting to be solved," he whispered to himself, feeling an overwhelming connection to the people who'd once inhabited this place.

A sudden memory pulled at him—of younger days when he'd pore over his grandmother's tales of brave explorers and mysterious lands. Those stories had ignited a passion, setting him on this path of discovery. It was what had driven him to become an archeologist in the first place. He recalled Eldoria, a realm often mentioned in hushed tones in those tales. Was it merely a myth? In his youth, he had dreamed of a faraway land full of magical creatures, and magic. Knights fought battles against evil and dragons in those dreams, they had always felt so real. That was how he imagined Eldoria, but unfortunately, the real world was far more boring.

Lost in his thoughts, Leo was jolted back to the present by Professor Alaric's voice, “You always did have a penchant for speaking to yourself, Leo,” He teased, his voice rich with amusement. "Remember, my boy, it's not just about uncovering these relics, but understanding their tales."

Professor Alaric was his teacher from university, and he had invited Leo to join him on this expedition a few months after graduation. Leo of course jumped at the offer to work with Professor Alaric. His lectures on ancient Rome and the Aztecs were fascinating and he had come to respect Professor Alaric and his opinions significantly.

The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

Leo looked up, smiling at the professor's sagely demeanor, his silver hair and beard contrasted starkly with the surrounding darkness, illuminated only by the lantern he carried. He was average in height, only slightly shorter than Leo, but very thin and had a graceful air about him at all times.

"It’s these stories that drive me, Professor. They make history feel alive, and tangible. I can't help but get lost in it. Each artifact, each inscription, they all hold a piece of the grand puzzle."

Alaric nodded, placing the lantern on a stone pedestal. "And what a puzzle this temple is. That's why I love archaeology. We don't just study history; we touch it and interact with it. I've encountered relics from many different cultures over the years, but none quite like this. This temple might be one of our most significant finds yet."

Alaric motioned to Leo. "Come, I want to show you something." Leo set down the tablet he had been studying and followed the professor. The two moved deeper into the temple, drawn to a grand mural depicting a cosmic event—a meteor shower, a sun, and a strange symbol that appeared to be an amulet of some sort. As they discussed the possible interpretations, a subtle vibration grew beneath their feet, intensifying until the entire chamber was shaking. Dust shook loose from the ceiling, and the two men exchanged alarmed glances. All of a sudden, the shaking stopped and the murmur of the forest outside grew distant, an uncanny silence enveloped the temple.

Leo’s attention was irresistibly drawn to a metallic gleam partially obscured by some fallen debris. With growing excitement, he carefully moved away the debris, clearing the rubble to reveal an ornate amulet with a luminous crystal at its center.

"Could this be...?" Leo trailed off, realizing the resemblance to the mural's depiction.

“Professor!” Leo exclaimed, his voice filled with excitement, “Look at this!”

Alaric, joining him, peered closely. "Hmm, very interesting. It might be best to proceed with caution after that earthquake, but I can say the design is unlike anything I've ever seen. This design might predate any known civilization in this region. Perhaps you should wait until we're sure the tremors have subsided before..."

Unable to contain himself Leo threw caution to the wind and reached out for the amulet, as his fingers made contact with the crystal the chamber instantly lit up, bathing everything in a bright light. An intense surge of energy enveloped him in a feeling like thousands of tiny pricking needles. The world began to blur at the edges and time seemed to speed up and slow in waves. The air grew dense, he could not breathe or move and a force unseen began to pull on him as he started losing consciousness.

Amidst the swirling vortex of light and energy, Leo's last coherent thought was of the amulet, its glow, and that the adventures he dreamed of as a child were about to begin.
