The voice from the crystal sent chills down Leo's spine. Its luminous glow and deep resonance seemed to pierce his very core, demanding answers even before he could articulate them. The secluded clearing felt like it bore the weight of countless ages, with the pulsating crystal at its heart.
"Ahhhh... I see," the voice intoned. "You've been summoned by fate." The crystal's rhythm slowed, its glow dimming.
Leo's brow furrowed. "Fate? Is this what Seraphina was hinting at? Do you know of her whereabouts? And who, exactly, are you?"
"Patience....Eldoria does not call to those without purpose," the voice replied, echoing with a depth that suggested an immense well of knowledge and wisdom. "Your friend Seraphina is on her own journey. When the time is right, your paths will converge again. As for my identity..." Just then, the same bird-like creature Leo had glimpsed earlier descended gracefully from the canopy, alighting on the pedestal. Leo took a moment to take in its appearance. Dante was unlike any bird he had ever seen. He had iridescent feathers that shimmered in hues of blues and purples, much like the crystal. His tail feathers were elongated, cascading down like a royal cape. But the most striking feature was his eyes. Deep, expressive and almost human-like, they bore a wisdom beyond his birdly appearance. And to Leo's surprise, this magnificent bird offered a bow in his direction. Did the bird just bow??
"Chuckling, the voice—seemingly attuned to Leo’s thoughts or emotions, much like Seraphina—explained, "Think of me as a guardian spirit. Call me Yana if names comfort you. This realm under my watch is sacred, and I do what I can to shield it. My feathered companion here has been observing you on my behalf. But enough about us, Leo, I must ask: what do you seek, beyond the company of your friend and a way back home?"
Leo hesitated for a moment. While his immediate instinct was to flee this strange spirit and find Seraphina, he instinctively reached for his father's pendant. "I seek understanding," he said, his voice firmer now. "I want to know why I’m here, what purpose Eldoria holds for me. I've spent so much of my life feeling lost and searching for direction. If answers lie here, I want to find them."
The crystal's glow intensified, casting intricate webs of light across the clearing. "Your journey has only just begun," Yana spoke softly. "To understand Eldoria, you must first listen to its magic, understand its creatures, and respect its ancient ways. Only then will you find what you seek."
Suddenly, the hum began to intensify, electrifying the clearing's atmosphere. A fog began to rise, enveloping Leo. As the surrounding forest's nocturnal chorus faded, the mist presented visions: a majestic city with towering spires, shadowy figures moving on mysterious errands, and an expansive library.
Just as abruptly, the mist vanished, returning the clearing to its previous tranquility. The crystal's glow dimmed, settling back to its original gentle glow. Yana, however, had one last message for Leo.
"Continue seeking the City of Luminara. There, in the heart of Eldoria, you may find the answers you seek. Trust in yourself, trust in the land, and your path will reveal itself," and with that, the last spark of the crystal dimmed.
"Yana?" Not receiving a response, he groaned out in frustration. What was he to make of all this? 'Listen'? 'Honor ancient customs'? Leo took a moment to process everything. The path to Luminara was slightly clearer now, but he was filled with even more questions than before. The visions he had seen in the fog must have been Luminara. He was anxious to arrive and hoped he would find Seraphina there waiting for him.
He then noticed the bird, still perched regally on the pedestal, eyeing him. "I didn't quite catch your name earlier, if you have a name, but it's good to meet you. I'm Leo, though I suppose you already know..." he trailed off, unsure why he was talking to the bird, sure it was intelligent but it's not as if it could speak back to him. He might as well have been talking to himself. His shoulders slumped, and he dropped his head, feeling the fatigue and exhaustion from the past two days.
"Dante, at your service, young lord."
Startled, Leo scanned the surroundings before locking eyes with Dante, who had one wing draped across its chest in a genteel bow. "You... you can talk?" Leo stammered.
"Indeed," Dante replied, his tone suggesting this was common knowledge. "I am a Prismavox. We may be scarce, but each of us is fluent in the common tongue."
Leo chuckled softly. "My apologies. In my world, most birds don't really talk." Suddenly realizing Dante might be able to help him, Leo decided to ask, "Dante could you possibly show me what is safe to eat? It's been days since I've eaten properly."

"With pleasure," Dante replied, hopping from the pedestal. He soared past Leo, beckoning him to follow.
Leo trailed behind Dante, the forest awaking with an energy he hadn't noticed before. The ground beneath his feet was soft, covered in a layer of vibrant green moss that released a fresh, earthy scent with every step. Massive, ancient trees with bark resembling silver and gold towered above them. Their leaves, translucent and of varying shades of pastel, created a beautiful picture under a full moon. Strange, flower-like luminescent fungi sprouted from the tree trunks, providing an additional soft glow to the path.
Every rustle of the leaves and the soft coo of distant creatures felt like the land was speaking directly to him. From the canopy, he could hear the trills of creatures not unlike birds, but with melodies more complex and harmonious than any he'd heard before. Nearby streams of shimmering, crystal-clear water reflected the moonlight, illuminating small iridescent fish that darted playfully. The gentle sound of the flowing water was accompanied by a soft, enchanting hum, perhaps a song from the forest itself.
Dante alighted on a branch of a bush bearing vibrant blue berries. "These, young lord, are Luminberries. Not only are they safe to eat, but they also have a refreshing taste and can provide a quick burst of energy. Just what you might need after your recent travels."
Leo approached cautiously, plucking one and examining it. The berry was slightly luminescent, almost pulsating with a gentle glow. Taking a deep breath, he popped it into his mouth. The taste was an explosion of sweetness with a hint of tanginess. "These are incredible!" he exclaimed.
Dante bowed slightly, a gleam of pride in his eyes. "Eldoria offers many such wonders. But always be cautious; not everything that looks appealing is safe."
As they continued, Dante showcased various plants, like the Silverleaf Fern which, when crushed, could help with minor wounds, and the Whispering Reeds that emitted a soft, melodic tune when the wind blew that could be used to brew a tea to help sleep. With each new discovery, Leo's awe for Eldoria grew.
Through Dante's instruction and conversation, his mannerisms became more evident. He carried himself with the poise of a butler, knowledgeable and ready to assist, yet always maintaining a respectful distance. Every time Leo stumbled or had a question, Dante was there with an answer or a helpful wing.
"You've been here for a long time, haven't you, Dante?" Leo asked, taking a moment to rest on a moss-covered rock.
Dante perched beside him, nodding. "Indeed, young lord. Many cycles of the moon have passed since I took on the duty of safeguarding this region alongside Yana."
Leo chuckled, "You make it sound so formal. Just 'Leo' will do. No need for the 'young lord' title."
Dante blinked, his feathers ruffling slightly in surprise. "Very well, Leo," he replied, emphasizing the name with a hint of playful formality. "But it is in my nature to be polite.'"
Leo nodded, "I understand, thank you for showing me so much. I feel much better, I probably should find a place to sleep for the night. Will you travel with me for a while?"
Dante cocked his head in a very bird-like manner, "I will watch over you to the edge of Yana's protection, I can go no further than that Leo. But I will continue teaching you until we reach that point. For now rest without worry, Yana will watch over us as you sleep."
With night fully embracing Eldoria, the forest around them seemed even more alive. The moon overhead shone brighter than any Leo had ever seen. Constellations unfamiliar to him wove tales across the night sky, while bio-luminescent insects and creatures danced in the shadows, illuminating the forest floor below.
Leo sighed with exhaustion. The weight of the day's revelations was settling in, and the forest's gentle cadence made it all the more appealing to rest. He found a small clearing under a canopy of translucent leaves, which gently filtered the moonlight, creating a soft glow on the forest floor. It seemed like the perfect spot.
He was about to lie down on the mossy ground when Dante fluttered down beside him. "Wait," Dante chirped, his voice carrying a hint of amusement. He rustled through the underbrush, revealing a large, velvety fern. "This is a Moonlit Cushion. The locals say it's like sleeping on a cloud. Give it a try."
With a grateful nod, Leo settled onto the fern. It was unbelievably soft, adjusting to his body like a mattress, and yet, it retained a pleasant, refreshing coolness. "This is... amazing," Leo mumbled, his eyelids already drooping.
Dante seemed pleased. "Told you. It's one of Eldoria's little secrets." He paused, looking thoughtful for a moment. "Would you care for a lullaby, Leo?"
Leo chuckled softly. "A lullaby from a bird? This really isn't my world."
But Dante simply spread his wings, releasing a cascade of harmonious notes. It was unlike any lullaby Leo had ever heard. The melodic tune echoed the sounds of the forest, combined with a quality that seemed to resonate deep within his soul. Within moments, Leo's breathing deepened as he drifted into a restful slumber.
Dante watched Leo for a moment, a soft, affectionate look in his eyes. Then, with a graceful leap, he perched on a nearby branch, keeping vigil over the sleeping human. He began to hum softly to himself, intertwining his melodies with the whispers of the forest as the night deepened and the forest wrapped them in its protective embrace.
