The Beginning

The day was Tuesday, April, 5th 2057. It was like any normal day, that Tuesday, I woke up, took a shower and ate breakfast, and went to work. I work as a paramedic at PVH in Fort Collins, Colorado

Everything was going well, the sun was shining and the birds were singing and the traffic was not too bad. My shift was pretty good, with a few rough customers here and there. It was the drive home that was… strange.

As I was driving home, the radio blared its regular tunes, the same three songs in repeat stuck on a loop. Then the radio began to blare. A loud beeping noise. A robotic voice began to speak.

It seems our fears about the oncoming war with North Korea were not t be taken for granted.

As of 11:59, North Korea has launched a nuclear missile at the city of Denver, Colorado.

In approximately 24 minutes, the missile will collide with the earth. Find Immediate shelter, this is not a drill.

The radio cut off with a loud screech, the signal lost.

It was obvious other people had heard the broadcast, as chaos stormed outside my car. Cars flipped over, screams, and loud sirens screeched.

I had to move fast.

I stepped on the gas pedal and floored it down the road, I was racing against time to get home and get my dogs before the bomb struck. As I was hurrying down the road, I was rummaging through my glovebox to find my phone and I was not paying attention to the road ahead of me.

In doing so, I did not see the flipped over eighteen-wheeler blocking the road…

I awoke to sirens, and blood trickling down my face.

I looked around to see that my car was totaled.

It took a minute to regain myself and to check to see if anything was broken, nothing was, luckily, just a few cuts on my face, and a larger one across my forehead, I tried opening the door using the handle but it was stuck, so I started kicking the door and it only budged a little so I kicked it harder and sighed in relief when it fell open.

I crawled out of the car and made my way to the closest building, which happened to be the building I had just left from. PVH.

As I walked through the empty halls of the hospital I could still hear the sirens outside.

I made my way to the lowest level of the hospital while grabbing food and water to survive as long as I needed.

I ran to the basement and shut and locked the door, shortly after locking the door I heard banging on the door and people begging to be let in so they don’t die from the bomb.

I sat for a minute looking at the door in a daze before I ran and unlocked it and opened it and let them in, then I slammed the door shut and locked it again. After I let them in, I surveyed to see who was all in the room and how many supplies we had for everyone.

I did a headcount and in the room, there were 3 guys, and 2 girls, technically 3 girls, if you counted me, Oh and there was also a dog, a young husky, oblivious to the chaos outside.

After a while, the sirens stopped, and there was an eerie silence that came across the room.

Then the room began shaking violently, we all ran for cover under tables as stuff was falling from shelves. The room shook for about 30 minutes, and then it stopped, and there was a very loud yet distant boom.

We all looked at each other and we knew the bomb had struck.

A few minutes later we heard a loud crash from above us, and we knew it was the shock wave knocking over the rest of the hospital. After the building stop shaking we counted our supplies,

We had 3 first aid kits, 2 boxes of canned beans, 3 boxes of canned vegetables, and 1 box of canned fruit, it was not much but it would have to last.

After counting up all the supplies we split up and searched the room for something to do.

One of the guys found an old retro gaming console that required no internet, and as a bonus, we found Super Smash Bros!

We spent about 5 hours playing Smash Bros against each other while eating some chips we found in the back of the room.

But Smash Bros only entertains you for so long, after a while we got bored and someone had the “bright idea” to see who could hold their breath for the longest amount of time…

We lost one of the guys to that “bright idea”, he held his breath till he passed out and when he fell he hit his head on the metal shelving that he was sitting next to.

I tried to revive him but I couldn’t
