CHAPTER 2 - THE AWAKENING
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------
5 MONTHS LATER
----------------------------------------------
The day was Monday, September 5th, 2058. There were only me, 1 guy and 1 other girl left, the other guy died after he tried climbing a cabinet to get into a vent to try to leave, but the cabinet fell on top of him and crushed him to death. The girl died by suicide, she got depressed and one day we all woke up and she was dead on the floor with a broken neck. Of course, by now, we had run out of food and were resorting to cooking and eating books and leather. We have all lost about 15-20 pounds from not eating real food. At one point the guy said we should leave and see what the outside is, but none of us wanted to. We also seemed to have started getting radiation poisoning from the bomb.
We have begun trying to get the basement door open, but it has been unsuccessful. At this point, we are just trying to survive another day, and that is starting to get hard, I mean we have no food, and 2 of the original group members are dead, which has taken a toll on us mentally. And not to mention the radiation poisoning that is slowly killing us and that if we continue to live like this we will be dead within a month. We have been spending hours trying to get that goddam door to open, we suspect that some debris that are keeping it from opening. We were on the verge of giving up when I looked up and saw a vent above the door that led to the hallway on the other side of the door. I looked around and saw a latter in the corner of the room and ran and grabbed it and placed it under the vent, I climbed up and took the grate off the vent and crawled through and hopped down on the other side.
The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.
What I saw that was blocking the door made my blood run cold, it was a giant misconfigured person that was swollen and mutated from the radiation from the bomb. I almost threw up in my hazmat suit, I yelled to the others to get their suits on and crawl through the vent because the door was not going to be able to be opened.
The girl got through without a problem, The guy on the other hand got stuck halfway through and we had to pull him out the rest of the way, after he came out we called the dog (who we named Starry) to climb the latter and crawl through the opening. We all turned and started walking down the hallway towards the stairs when suddenly the mutated person gasped out and said “WAIT! DON’T LEAVE ME HERE!!” and we all jumped and turned around to see that the person was alive somehow, and there was not much we could do other than look at him and tell him that we can’t do anything so we turned back around and continued walking to the stairs.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We pushed open the heavy double doors and walked through them and looked up, the stairs seemed endless…
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As we walked up the stairs in silence listening to our footsteps I couldn’t help but wonder if there were other survivors of the bombing attack or if we were the only ones. We all stopped as we passed a sign on the wall that said we were on the ground level and we looked at the doors, they had windows but they were covered in a layer of dust and debris. We walked up to them and pushed them open to reveal a disgusting outside world, the sky was a dark gray, even though it was daytime. We ran around to the ambulance bay and there was one that we luckily not crushed by the chunks of the hospital that had fallen, we checked the gas tank and it was full.
The keys were inside and in the ignition, we started the ambulance up and drove it slowly out of the ambulance parking lot and onto the road, once we were on the road I gunned it down the road. We made our way to the nearest highway, which happened to be I25, and right when we turned onto the highway the radio in the ambulance started to squeal and screech, then a voice came over and said “BEEEEEP BEEEEP BEEEEEEEEP THIS IS A MESSAGE TO ALL REMAINING SURVIVORS IN AMERICA, WE URGE YOU TO CONGREGATE TO WASHINGTON D.C. FOR IMMEDIATE EVACUATION! BEEEEEP BEEEEP BEEEEEEEEP”. We all sat in silence taking in what just happened, I spoke up and said let’s go to the Northern Colorado Regional Airport to see if we can get a plane or helicopter. As we were driving to the airport I couldn’t help but think back on what happened during those 5 months…
