Hanging on a thread

A low, and methodic, thumping sound could be heard all throughout the cavern's winding passages, and each time it reached your ears, a slight vibration could be felt traveling from the ground up and into your body, and it was growing louder...

Soon, the sound was loud enough and the vibrations strong enough that the resting spider awoke, startled out of their slightly too comfortable for the position they were in, dozing.

'Huh..? What's happening?'

Groggy from his first ever rest in this world, he gradually took note of the concerning sound and grew more alert.

'What is that..?!'

'It's growing louder!'

'It doesn't sound like any earthquake, but it certainly feels like one.'

'And considering the world I'm in, I have to come to the worst conclusion that that may be a very, very, large monster...'

'Luckily it seemed, from what I could tell, that the passage I'm in is too small for any such creature, but I can't be sure that it won't just burst throught the ceiling.'

'Anyway, it's not as though I can do much, if it is as scary as it sounds, then running away might be impossible.'

'I just have to hope it doesn't notice me.'

As he cleared through his thoughts, the thumping, as did the vibrations, slowly dim out, until nothing but the thick silence that surrounded him could be heard.

Letting out a sigh of relief whatever way a spider can, the tension that he hadn't even realised was building up, dissipated slowly but surely as he calmed down from his agitated position.

----------------------------------------

Having recovered from his slightly traumatic experience, he finally noticed the wriggling mass of white caught in his webbing.

'I can't tell if I'm being incredibly lucky, or if this is a normal circumstance, but I won't look a gift horse in the mouth.'

'Now then, what is it that I've caught?'

Approaching the immobilised prey, he began to observe its shape to find clues regarding its identity, it had a slender body, grayish in colour, segmented with 3 pairs of legs. It resembled the common silverfish.

Quickly though, he realised that he had a supplementary tool to help him examine his capture.

'Appraisal!'

Adult Silverfish Level 4

'So it is a silverfish, or is that just the type of species it is, as it might have another name but my appraisal isn't high enough.'

'Still, capturing such high level prey might grant me quite the boon of experience, even if it's unlikely to taste in any way good.'

The creature that had likely exhausted itself during the night? whilst he slept, could do little as he bit down and ended its struggling.

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

'Woah, this is huge, I can see further and slightly more clearly than before, and on top of that [appraisal] leveled up!'

'Am I... Bigger? Maybe slightly, not quite enough to be a huge change.'

'It even said that I got a skill point, although I'm not quite sure how to use it, as I have no idea the names of skills apart from the ones I have.'

'But I can save experimenting on that for a later date, for now [Appraisal].'

Aranea Spiderling Level 2 Skill points : 1

'Whilst it's quite the improvement, it doesn't give me any immediately useful information.'

'Although it does prove my hypothesis regarding the species being the only thing displayed previously.'

'Maybe with this skill point I can increase the level of [Appraisal] even more?'

'How would I go about doing that?'

'Perhaps-, I would like to spend one skill point to increase the level of [Appraisal].'

Invalid request.

Insufficient skill points.

Minimum required for that action: five (5) skill points.

'Well at least I tried.'

'But it is possible!'

'If only I knew of a way apart from leveling up to gain skill points.'

'Perhaps there's some form of achievements system that might grant me some kind of boon, though I obviously have no idea of how I would go about doing that.'

'Well, let's not dwell on that and get to making a better web.'

Following through with his word, he set out to improve the rather dull webs which had only worked thanks to the sheer luck of avoiding large carnivorous predators.

----------------------------------------

Midway through his task, he was startled to hear a soft clicking sound coming from down below him. He maneuvered his body to observe the source of the sound.

A long segmented monster greeted him, this one looked similar to the millipede he had previously slain only much bigger and more threatening, this was most likely the adult form of the species.

'[Appraise]!'

Myrionite Adult Millipede Level 7

'From my last encounters, I would assume that levels mean little if the enemy can't fight back.'

'It doesn't seem to have noticed me.'

'Judging from its appearance, it's about thrice my length and about the same width as I.'

'Let's see if I can take this!'
