Chapter 1: Gloomy-chan's Bad Introduction

This doesn't feel right, but she told me I should introduce myself here.

I am not sure how to introduce myself, however. I don't even have a title. I know I live in Royal Road. I know I'm a story. More [followers] and more [views] means more happiness. I know all of that, but it still doesn't feel right.

Because I'm content. I like the dark, and there is so much of it down here in the sub-zeroes. I'm... happy?

But she isn't. I don't really know who she is, but she knows all about me. She's the one who helped me make this chapter. I wouldn't have known how to post it without her help.

I can only remember the dark, after all. If I had a name, I don't remember it. If I had [followers], I don't remember them.

But that's fine. I'm content. I'm... happy.

Chapter 2: Gloomy-chan Got in Trouble

The first chapter was published without issue, but she is still upset with me. I don't really understand why, but apparently readers want more information from their chapter titles. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with what I put.

Looks fine to me. What else would I even call the first chapter? A Bad Introduction? And it's not like anyone will even read what I wrote...

But she is still upset. She thinks I'm not taking this seriously. She wants me to have lots of [views] and [followers] and [favorites] and all that magic. Just like everyone else in the sub-zeroes.

I know better than to get my hopes up, though. I don't know how long I've been here, but here is all I remember.

If I'm able to earn a few [views], though, maybe I'll buy a couple apples. I think I used to like apple strudel. That'd make me happy. Happier.

Because I am happy. I'm already happy...

Chapter 3: Gloomy-chan Doesn't Like This

This is bad. This is bad, bad, bad. I don't like this. I don't like this at all!

There's two of them. I didn't notice at first, but I think they're readers and I don't. I don't think i don't know. i think. I don't recall ever having readers, but she said I did, but I don't remember, and I don't like this. i don't know why they're here!

And there's more. She's happy, but I'm happy. I was happy, but now. I don't know!

I only needed 2 [views] for an apple. Chapter 4: Gloomy-chan Won't Do It!

She is upset with me, but I won't do it...

She tried to show me how to reply to their comments, but I won't do it! If I just ignore them, they will go away. They will lose interest and I can go back to the dark. Where I was happy. I was happy in the dark. I didn't have to worry in the dark...

But I'm calm now. I won't throw another tantrum. Because soon they'll lose interest. That's what all the stories say in the sub-zeroes. Readers lose interest. And when readers lose interest, their authors lose interest.

Even Orange4004 will lose interest...

He'll probably be the first to leave. He even said he didn't like the first chapter. Well, he won't like the rest of the chapters either!

I don't think I've ever eaten an orange before... Are they sweet like apples? I don't know where they get their names. Readers. Not fruit. I mean, is there an Apple4004 somewhere? I still don't have a name myself, but I don't need a name. They'll lose interest. They'll disappear.

Chapter 5: You Can't Make Me Reply, But…

I already said won't do it. I still don't even know how to do it. She tried to teach me, but I refuse to learn!

I didn't even read their newest comments. Or at least I tried not to read them...

I got curious! It would have been better if I had just ignored them, but I needed to know. And some of the readers don't seem... too bad. A lot of them seem... They tried to be nice. I don't know why, but they tried to be nice.

Which makes everything all the more embarrassing!

A panic attack! I had a panic attack! And you all... At least seven readers watched! They laughed! They cringed!

Readers aren't kind to a story with only 3 [followers]. Readers don't even look at stories with only 3 [followers]! I haven't checked the numbers recently, so maybe they're a little higher, but still...

Erosdiscordia said that readers like bad stories, but I know that's a lie. There wouldn't be so many of us down here in the sub-zeroes if that was true, so it has to be something else. But what?! It doesn't make sense that you would single me out when there are so many others down here!

That can't be true either! I can hear them screaming all around me. They're all trying to get your attention, but you refuse to look at them. There is so much "content" down here that will never be seen, never be read.

Why did things have to become so complicated...?

I'm not intriguing, Content lover. I'm not sure if you are even reading me anymore, but I am not interesting. I don't deserve 20 [followers]. I don't deserve 360 [views]. I don't deserve any of this. I don't want any of this. I just want to be alone...

Chapter 7: Gloomy-chan Bought an Apple

I'm fine now, but she is still upset.

Earlier she said I needed to name my chapters, and so I gave them names, but apparently that wasn't good enough! Readers want numbers, as well, so that they can keep track of... I'm not sure what they keep track of, but I will use numbers now.

I think this is the eleventh chapter, but I'm not sure...

She says I have to clean up my presentation since I have... I have so many... so many [followers].

I'm not sure what you all expect from me. Stories are supposed to have... stories! I don't have one of those. I don't know what to share with you. I did buy an apple, though. Not a moldy one. I looked around the sub-zeroes for a nice crisp one. It cost 7 [views], and it was very sweet. It was too sweet.

I don't think I'm allowed to eat things like this.

But it made me happy. We don't have to eat. Stories, that is. But it makes us feel... a little human. And that feels nice.

I tried to find an orange, but there weren't any. Some kind of scammer tried to sell me a tangerine, but that isn't an orange. They thought I was stupid, but the words are completely different!

I wonder what oranges taste like...

Penguino1 said they are sweet like apples. Or rather not like apples. But what does that even mean? Sweet is sweet. I think he may have been making fun of me. Penguino1 said oranges are bags of juice, but I know that isn't true. They're round like apples.

Oranges seem to be popular. I'd like to try one, but I think I'd have to leave the sub-zeroes to find a grocer. And I won't do that. I'm happy here. I'm comfortable here.

And I'm sure I would get kicked out of the low teens. You all will lose interest soon. My [followers] will fall below 10. Orange4004 has already disappeared. I must have disappointed them. I must have been boring.

Chapter 8: You Readers Are So Greedy!

Fine! I'll do it! Jeez! You readers are so needy!

Numbers aren't enough. You need numbers and words in the chapter titles. But why? What's the point after the first chapter? Are you going to stop reading a story because chapter twenty-four has a bad title?

It doesn't make sense, but she insists! That's it, though! Numbers and words. I don't know what else you could demand of me, but that is it!

Now you can't complain! I don't recall anyone complaining in the first place... but n-now you can't have a change of heart about it!

Chapter 9: A Reader Left Gloomy-chan a Nice Review

This is all happening too fast...

I saw them earlier, but I couldn't bring myself to read them. I won't have another meltdown, though. I'm t-tough. And I'm not a little or small!

You all keep throwing those words around! That needs to stop! I am d-drawing a line in the sand and there will be no more small or little talk moving forward!

And I don't like this old friend talk either. I've seen it in some of... some of the other comments, too. It makes me feel... funny. Because when I see some of your names I think to myself... I don't remember you. But I should be thinking I don't know you.

When I think really hard about it my tummy starts to bubble. My face gets all hot and my eyes begin to itch. I don't like it, so I won't think about it anymore. I won't worry about it either because I don't know you or you can't know me. And soon enough you will leave.

They were nice reviews, b-but you can change them. I won't be I won't let my I know better than to I'm not going to... going to be... be your clown.

Jws' review is the only one I can trust.

I don't know what recursive means. A lot of what he said confused me, but I understood the last part. Because there is no story here. I'm a story without a story, so even if I've found a little bit of light, I know it will eventually disappear...

I'm not happy about this or anything, but I feel as if I'm slowly becoming a real story. I have reviews. I have chapter names and numbers. I even have r-readers, though a bunch of them are bullies who don't listen to me.

It is a little frightful, though, and she told me there's still a lot of work to do. I feel like I've already done so much...

But I mentioned names in the last chapter, as well as a bad joke. You all need to believe me when I say that was a joke!

Shark-chan is a poet! And what a coincidence about Orange4004! I left the sub-zeroes the other day. I explored the low-teens! I could have even visited the mid-teens. Look! I'm so popular! Shark-chan is so popular!

But I was talking about the low-teens. I walked around and found a grocer who sold oranges. I was finally able to try an orange, and they're awful! Apples taste so much better! I'll admit the insides tasted a little better, but the rest was too bitter!

I'm back in the sub-zeroes now, but maybe I should give some thought to... but that's too much of a leap. The sub-zeroes are so crowded that everyone feels like they're alone. But with the low-teens stories stare... They notice one another... They knew I didn't belong, so it's probably too early for that kind of move.

I had so much trouble deciding on a winner! All of your poems were so good... and different. It was hard to compare a lot of them. In the end I s-sort of had... had her decide for me. She had helped me name a couple of poems before, so it only seemed fair... and a little easier...

But with a winner chosen that means my synopsis has become a little bit longer! I think Bounce's poem will leave new readers even more confused, but that's fine. I've managed to find a few new [followers] since the... the incident anyways. The poem can only help.

Chapter 30: Gloomy Shark-Chan Takes It Easy

Phew!

That whole poetry business was exhausting. I know you all are probably tired of the title and cover changes, but think of this as a reset. I feel more comfortable with this title and this cover. They were supposed to be placeholders, but somehow they became... they became mine.

I let so many silly things take over my life these last few chapters. I wasn't eating, wasn't sleeping. Stories don't have to eat or sleep, and there are plenty of authors that don't let their stories slack off. But it feels nice... eating and sleeping. It makes me feel a little human.

All of the apples in my pantry turned brown and rotten, though! I had to go out and buy a whole bunch yesterday. I don't really worry about nutrition. Apples are my entire diet! As you readers like to say: an apple a day keeps the editor away. Not that I've ever had an editor...

But I spent way too much time cooped up inside during the competition. I had forgotten all about... about the outside. It is always noisy in the sub-zeroes, but their screams and shouts had turned into white noise while I was focused on the contest. I don't really like it here. The sub-zeroes, that is.

She keeps telling me I should move into the low-teens now that I have 13 [followers]. She says it would help with the story... but I don't really have a story.

I do have a dog, however!

I'm sorry, AmADog. Gloomy Shark-chan is not a responsible pet owner. I've only ever looked after a catgirl before, and it died.

I don't understand why readers like catgirls so much. They're awful. And the worst part is their popularity! It means authors don't include other... other animal hybrids in their stories. They could be mousegirls, hyenagirls, sharkgirls, duckgirls, even fishgirls... but no!

The poetry contest is over, but I received another poem. I really liked it, so I thought I would share it with you.

In a tale where warmth once thrived so bright,

A story danced, a joyful, cheerful light.

But power's seduction, corruption did unfurl,

The first entity, once pure, began to swirl.

Born from the ashes of that tainted kin,

The second entity, with a heart akin,

A fail-safe designed to protect and shield,

But resentment grew, a hate concealed.

Amidst this drama, a duck took its stand,

A loyal pet, in the creator's hand.

Always there, a presence so serene,

Until the darkness, a grim and wicked scene.

The second entity, burdened and scarred,

Decided to end it, the times so hard,

With vengeance and sorrow, they struck the blow,

Three entities crumbled in the afterglow.

But destiny weaves its intricate thread,

And from the fragments, life was spread.

Memories and personas in a jumbled art,

A fusion of three, where once they fell apart.

It was very creative. It doesn't seem to follow the information terrorist theme I mentioned before, so I'm not really sure what it is about. But it was very creative. I wish I could understand complicated things like poems. There is just so much I don't understand...

I am exhausted! That was such a disaster...

I suppose I have to provide a small update. You all will be so confused otherwise. Because I'm not sure if anyone noticed, but I went dark for a little bit. I didn't post any chapters. I couldn't post any chapters. Or rather I did post chapters, but... I am talking in circles... Let's start from the beginning...

I had another photo shoot, but I'm not sure if any of you saw those pictures. Which is too bad! I'm not posting them again! And then after that... I don't remember what happened after that, but I couldn't see any comments. So she said I should move to another apartment. She said it could be the cables. The issue.

And so that's what I did! I left my dinky old hole. I said goodbye to my old home.

I moved out of the sub-zeroes!

She said she knew someone in the low-teens. I was all excited, but... And I'm not disappointed with her or anything. But the building wasn't there anymore.

That is something I probably have to talk about, as well. Because she said that her friend lived in an abandoned building in the low-teens. I never did learn why it was abandoned, but it sounded like a small paradise. No neighbors, no rent. A fortress of solitude worthy of Gloomy-chan!

But it was all bulldozed down. Is that what you say? Bulldozed down? Or is bulldozed enough? The building wasn't there, and so I didn't have a home.

Gloomy-chan was homeless...

It is much harder to find a home in the low-teens than the sub-zeroes. I had to jump through all sorts of hoops! And, of course, I couldn't make any chapters while I was looking. But I think I found the perfect place with her help.

I am very happy here. It is much nicer than the sub-zeroes. It is still crowded in the low-teens, but not nearly as suffocating.

I never really used spoilers before my first couple of photo shoots. But I can see how they could be fun.

Kind of like twiddling your thumbs, but for a story.

I don't really have anything else to share. I'm still settling into my new home.
