White. White all around you, in every direction. It's all you can see, there is nothing else.
Except there is something else. At first, you didn't notice them, as they were just a blur, but then your vision cleared and you were able to distinguish them.
Two figures, sitting on the ground, facing each other with a chess board in the middle. They were... playing chess, obviously.
They still had to notice you, so you observed them. The first was clearly human. You've seen a lot of average people, the type that was kinda hard to remember because of their lack of distinguishing features, but this one beat them all. He was the most normal person you had ever seen, normal face, normal clothes, normal build, normal everything. He was the definition of average.
While the other... well, it was like looking at a blue blaze, moving and reshaping without ever stopping. It was strange to look at, disturbing even.
Then, you had the impression that the flame turned towards you, and someone spoke.

"Ah, there you are! Sorry, I didn't notice you!"
A look of confusion appeared on your face. After all, a blue flame just spoke to you. It wasn't exactly normal.
"You're probably wondering why you're here, eh? Well, I could tell you, but then it would become a mess to explain."
The thing stopped talking, seemingly deep in thought.
"Yeah, let's do this: I will now tell you a story, and then I'll make it clear, what is your role in the great scheme of things. How about it?"
You nodded. Or at least, you tried. You didn't actually have a head with which you could nod; or a body, for all that matters.
The fact that you didn't freak out surprised even you, but then again, it was probably because of all the fictions about reincarnation and such that you read on RoyalRoadL.
The flame started speaking again "Right, how rude of me, I didn't even introduce myself. I am the Author. Or, at least, a medium which the Author communicates trough. You can call me a god if you want. You wouldn't be the first."
And then, he started narrating, while also continuing his game of chess...
