Entry 8- Out of the woods and into the woods

Being dragged further in the space of blood, viscera, and bones, Rita felt like vomiting as she was dragged through the carcasses, but as they went further in she realized a hunger that sat in the pit of her stomach. Looking at all the meat of many things as she was dragged along, and smelling the thick wet stench of blood seeping into her clothes, her breathing began to settle into a more sedate pace as a growl of hunger was heard.

Rita tried to turn towards the sound of a growl of satisfaction that came from the monster as it slowed to a stop to look at her with a chuckle. "ah-I a-am... gl-ad you like the... eff-ert I put in for h-our... n-nest! Th-the des-pair... of lost... trav-el-ers... and the fear of... s-sim-ple beast-s is a delicacy I... I am glad we share." As it turned back to make it's way to the nest at the center it began walking, followed by the sound of squelching with each step.

Knowing it'd be much easier to grab something, anything, Rita took this moment to look around for a weapon she might be able to grab. Rifling around with desperate hands as they sent signals of disgust and pain from the broken finger nails searching through the blood and meat to her brain, they came across a shape they recognized. With desperate excitement, her hand dug in to capture the foreign object and, pulled along by the monster, her fingers nearly slipped from the blood as a hunting knife was saved from the corpse it was embedded in.

Adrenaline began to surge again as she held it desperately in her hand, sure she wouldn't get a second chance if she failed. Looking around at the innards of this strange tent that seemed to be it's own world of blood and gore for a moment more, praying this wouldn't be where she dies, she fought and twisted with renewed determination to lean down enough to stab the monster.

"Hnnn... why... do you... struggle... so... my-" A roar of annoyance erupted from it as it released her to look at it's hand. On it's hand, just before the wrist sat a hunting knife embedded into it's flesh, reaching for it it stopped before it could try to grip the handle with it's enlarged hands. "Th-is... this... I... know this... knife... SHAN... DRA... my..." The horned monster fell to it's knees with it's hollow eyes transfixed to the blade, as for Rita, with her leg free, she began trying to quickly leave this gruesome place. Her leg was injured from being gripped so tightly, assuming she may have sprained her ankle from trying to escape she hurried on her hands and knees towards the flap of the entrance.

Cold gripped at her hand like a starved parasite as her hand touched the packed dirt of the outside, the cold air bringing an unsettling and numbing comfort as she breathed while leaving the tent and trying to stand up straight. Knowing she wasn't far from danger, she looked for her chair where her stuff was only to see the campfire had long died down, gone. Looking around she realized the trees were covered in frost, illuminated by the light of a half gibbous moon in the sky.

Growing numb to panic from building exhaustion, she looked around and saw her small bag of on-hand supplies and carefully hurried to grab it. With a quiet and haggard voice bordering a shrill tone Rita whispered to herself, "Jesus fucking Christ I need to get help and get the fuck out of here!" Opening the bag she hurried to find the satellite phone she bought to call for help as well as the small med kit but found they were gone, quickly looking thorough each section of the bag she found that everything was gone.

Eyes wide with disbelief as she mentally began to disconnect from the stress, unable to understand what was happening, unable to get a grip on this twisting reality, she was losing the last of her wits as she began stare at her feet. Trying to focus on breathing she was at loss for what to do when she saw the small radio on the ground where it fell when she knocked the chair over. A grave desire for normalcy was not yet lost from her grip as she crouched to grab it tightly in her hands for fear it too would disappear. Looking it over it was ON but non-functional, assuming the battery died or it broke when it fell, she was just grateful to have something in her hands she knew was real.

A piercing scream that momentarily silenced her heart erupted in the direction of the tent, intense fear grated on her nerves as her senses went on full burn as the world began to move faster than she could process. Her mind was struggling to process what was happening, though she bagan to understand as she looked down to see her legs moving. She finally realized the monster must have snapped out of it and seen she was gone, and her body, using it's fight or flight instinct, chose to run for all it's worth.

Looking forward again to try and pilot her body to the best of her ability; she went between trees, ducking under limbs, climbing over large rocks, and generally making a mad dash to be anywhere else. She ran until the adrenaline had run it's course, she ran until she was sure whatever that thing was would turn around rather than gave chase and kept going, she ran until she realized she lost track of how long she'd been running and almost immediately stopped to a halt.

Looking around she realized she didn't recognize these trees that surrounded her as she tried to catch her breath. It was then she realized her breathing was fine as if she hadn't been making a dead sprint for... however long she ran. She even looked down, finally realizing her leg was fine and all the blood was gone, checking her hands showed that her nails were as they were before anything had even happened.

The radio however, was still here, clenched tightly in her left hand. Sighing with relief out of a numb acceptance of the moment and being grateful to at least not be in pain and covered in gore anymore she checked the radio. Her face gradually returning to it's neutral stare, she held the radio next to her head and gave a modest shake, hearing no sounds from within, she considered herself lucky nothing was dislodged inside. Checking the dials and such showed it was set to "emergency power", assuming nothing would come of it at this point she switched "battery". To her modest surprise the radio came to life and... no music.
