Chapter 2. Encroaching shadows.

Chapter 2. Encroaching shadows.

Harvey Dennis is an infamous serial killer known as the Kansas City reaper. He laid down on his cell's cot in Kansas city prison reminiscing of when he was caught. Some chick who was jogging saw him doing his work and had called the cops on him while he was busy hammering a body to a tree in a park outside the city next to the road so all could see it, he didn't even know she existed until she was called up as a witness, he'd always remember that name, Alice Blackwell, and that face, beautiful but had a military bearing. He'd been convicted for 48 kills and was on deaths row, though he'd kept count far better than Them it was actually 66 kills, not including the people he'd killed while on prison, if he included them he'd have over 90 kills, though those looked like accidents, only one kill did he make a public display of and it was of a prison guard who'd made him wake up early to clean toilets. In retaliation he'd wrapped a bed sheet around his neck cut his stomach open and threw him over the rail, their guts came out of the cut and hung all the way down to the floor a few prisoners puking up their dinners from the previous night. He spent three months in solitary for that stunt.

He sighed, looking over to his cell mate who was reading some old bible, apparently he'd been arrested after burning down a church after they turned him down after he asked to be a pastor, he said god told him to do it, that they were all living in sin. "Hey, Bradley, your god tell you anything recently?"

He looks up from his bible, smiling he nodded to Harvey's surprise. "He just said to look up."

Harvey laughed at him, then felt a massive impact in the ground, he looked across the cell block seeing the wall crumbling and the cieling collapsing and after the dust cleared he could see what looked to be a massive wall of black crystal a couple minutes went by before he could see black roots start crawling across the ground, eventually reaching their cell on the second floor, he could hear screams coming from the cells downstairs and he backed away from the vines.

He saw Bradley hop down from his bunk and one of them raised itself up like a cobra and touched his chest. He stared at nothing and poked something that wasn't there and it punctured his chest and he screamed as vines started creeping beneath his skin and it severed itself from him.

One of the vines raised itself up as he backed up against a wall and it touched his heart, no, his soul, and it apparently liked what it saw because a deep purple prompt popped up in thin air.

[I am the void, darkness eternal, and I sense in you a darkness in your soul that yearns for blood.]

[I shall grant upon you my gifts and blessings, in return you shall serve me.]

[Accept] [Deny]

Harvey looked at the options and grinned a black toothed smile. "Looks like your god came through me preacher man." He said and pressed accept.

He felt it stab into his chest and stuff crawled beneath his skin, it was an extreme pain that felt like it'd never end. But eventually it did and he looked at himself, his hands were covered in bulging small black roots, he clutched his fist and noticed it felt slightly stronger, there was also his increased hunger not just for murder but hunger in general. He looked up seeing his cell mate looking back at him.

They brought their hand up and swiped it down and looked back at nothing. He did the same seeing the following.

Name: Harvey R. Dennis.

His grin widened as he looked at it, when he looked into the reflective surface of the toilet water he found something that looked like a poor imitation of himself, but he felt like this wasn't the case, rather it was his true self taking off the mask of humanity at long last.

He looked to his cell mate, and they were grinning as well, Harvey walked over to the cells automatic doors and willed his new scythe into being and put it's blade between the bars and pulled, it took about a minute for the steel bars to fall down after he cut a large square in the crisscrossed bars. He walked out, he couldn't wait to hunt again.

------------

David looked at the creeping black vines encroaching across his lawn, he looked to Jona who looked back to him. David grabbed his six shooter from his holster and Jona brought out a Glock. He stepped on one of the vines and it seemed to wither beneath his foot. He looked at Jona again seeing him do the same, the vine withered beneath is foot as well.

David heard something in the woods, the yelping of a dog, he carefully continued inwards eventually seeing his Neighbor Rose's golden retriever, though when he found it, it seemed to already be dead, some of the vines seems to puncture through it's belly. David turned to Jona, and shook his head. "Rose won't be happy that Gunner is dead." He turned back to it and saw something moving beneath it's fur.

"What the Sam hell?" Jona said, as the body twitched, then it moved again, attempting to stand up and fell down, it was like looking at Bambie trying to ice skate, like something was trying to get used to a body it didn't belong in.

David saw enough zombie movies as a kid to know not to let it get accommodated, he raised his revolver and shot it five times in the body and once in the head, when he saw it fall down and start madly flailing around he started reloading, until an actual ball of fire hit the thing in the chest and set it aflame. He heard it's shrieks and the creatures skin ruptured as the vines inside of it tried to escape but only ended up burning away. David looked at Jona seeing him looking just as confused, then looked over his shoulder more to see his daughter holding her hand up a swirl of smoke trailing to where the fireball hit, and it started to dissipate.

David smirked. "That's my girl." He looked back to Gunner's corpse, it was still smouldering, though from what he saw these things didn't like fire so maybe a forest fire would be a blessing, god help them if a moose or a cougar or shit even one of his cows caught whatever this was. And the flatter ground would let them see if anything was co.ing their way, but on the not bright side these things would be able to blend in with the blackened ash a lot easier. He shook his head, problems for future David.

David walked over to his daughter. "Alice, what was that?"

She looked at him, a sunny smile on her face. "I'm a cleric, I can use magic."

David looked further more confused. "What?"

She sighed. "This is like a game I play in my VR pod, it's called voidstar online, and if it's accurate, this is going to get so much worse."
