Empty Heroes

The truck hit me, and I felt like I was floating.

When I awoke, I found myself lying in front of a crowned man. Between us a sword protruded from the ground.

Before the king said anything, I stood and instinctively grabbed the sword’s handle. As I did something flowed into me from the sword.

Power coursed through my body, but my mind became increasingly fuzzier. My hand gripping the sword was no longer in my control and I quickly lost the rest of my body to the sword’s influence.

The king bellowed an order that I could no longer hear. In response, servants came and dressed my body in shining armor before it left the castle. We traveled by horse for weeks with barely a moments rest. Our destination became visible soon after the horse collapsed. A fortress covered in black flames.

My body traveled the last distance by foot. Despite the long travel it didn’t seem to feel any exhaustion even as it cut its way through the fortress’ inhabitants. They looked like monsters but some still had weapons in hand as they fought.

My body finally reached the end of the fortress. Monsters were coming from all sides, but my body only focused on the female monster sitting on the throne.

As my body stood over the corpse of the female monster I felt again. The sensations that had been robbed of me were slowly coming back. My tears fell on the corpse, but it was a shortlasting joy as the army of various monsters threw themselves at me. With my last breath I cursed the sword and the king that commanded it.
