Chapter 3

Passing off as a human for me is easy. The only particularly non-human part of my body would be my wings, which I usually just keep within my body to avoid breaking or harming them.

This body especially made it easier. In my old one, I had to shrink my size by quite a lot, but in this one, I could simply walk in and nobody would suspect me. Unless there's a thorough examination by a paladin or priest, I would never be found.

Granted, my clothes were a bit... out of place. When I woke up in this new body, they were already on, and I had none others so I just went with it.

So... Basically, I needed some clothes, more information, and perhaps a place to stay in that's not a cave in the middle of god knows where.

I was reluctant to do it... but perhaps, just perhaps, it might be a good idea to stay with the humans.

I sighed. I really didn't want to go through all the work that blending in a human society as a blood-sucking hellspawn required.

As I stood in front of the gates of a decently sized city, I pondered. With people pushing left and right to enter first, I just stood at the sides as I observed.

Things had changed quite a lot since my times. Back then, the atmosphere was almost always gloomy, with people losing loved ones left and right. Furthermore, the number of people back then was simply impossible to compare to the mind-boggling crowd of today.

I played around with the cash I 'borrowed' from the bandits with my fingers, feeling the cold metallic surface. It wasn't much, but I hoped it would let me in.

If not... I could just sneak in at night. However, from what the kids told me, patrols were quite strict and it was surprisingly hard to get in. Even for me, it would be difficult to get in without being spotted.

Finally making a choice in my heart, I stood up and walked over to the busy gate. There were plenty of guards these, some keeping order, some giving directions and others checking what was going in the city, making sure no smuggling was going on.

I couldn't help but be awed at the mighty creations of humankind. Walls that reached over 20 meters in height and two whole meters in width. It was an impressive sight indeed.

One of the guards noticed me staring at the walls and shouted at me. "Hut hut, keep it moving, lady!"

Hearing him, I realized I had been blocking the people behind me. I didn't really care what they thought, but I didn't want trouble. I smiled sheepishly at the guard and kept going.

After paying a toll of one silver coin due to not having citizenship nor any form of admission, I finally got to walk in the city.

As I walked around like a tourist, I started feeling plenty of gazes on me.

I tensed up slightly, but relaxed after thinking about it for a bit.

The gazes were annoying, yes, and they were also intense, but I couldn't feel any ill intent in any of them. They simply... Stared at me. Inappropriately, sometimes.

I huffed in annoyance. Yet another thing I had to get used to. Of course, I could always try and recreate my old body, but I had a feeling the manager would never let me do such a thing.

Besides, altho I was annoyed, this was still exciting! A new body, a new life, a new start. Granted, the new start seemed to be somewhat similar to my old one, as I had already murdered over 20 people on the first day. I could have probably spared the kids from earlier, but I really didn't want anybody getting any clues that I was still up and alive.

After around 2 hours of exploration, I had some ideas as to the layout. I even asked a couple people I passed by for information, glad to see that they happily shared everything I wanted to know.

The center of the city was reserved for the nobility, while the further out you went the poorer the city became. A pretty common setup, all in all.

After I was satisfied with what I found, I got a room in a nearby inn and decided to meditate for a while, partially to pass the night that would come in a bit and also because it was a habit of mine that I found hard to suppress.

Surprisingly, the humans were much less... corrupt than I imagined. Granted, I had only seen the surface, but people seemed to be having a pretty decent life overall.

I was definitely no crusader for justice, but I still despised inequality.

I closed my eyes as I hummed. "Life is like a rainbow, always seemingly the same and yet always so different..."
