The Infinite Tier
Yoshi’s voice grew softer but more reverent. “All beings, no matter their rank, answer to the Infinite Tier. This is the highest and most unattainable pinnacle of power. It transcends both reality and non-reality. To describe the Infinite Tier is to fail because it exists beyond comprehension. It is the source of all power, the essence of existence itself.”
Joseph shook his head in amazement. “So basically, there’s no touching the Infinite Tier?”
“Exactly,” Lyra replied. “It is both all and none. No being, no matter how powerful, could ever hope to rival it.”
Joseph leaned back, absorbing the information. “Well, I guess I’ll settle for aiming somewhere around Demon Lord. Baby steps, right?”
Yoshi laughed. “That’s the spirit, Joseph. But trust me, even baby steps in this hierarchy will test you like nothing else.”
Joseph rode his horse a bit further ahead, blocking their path. The group came to a halt, watching him curiously. Yoshi and Lyra exchanged a brief glance before turning their attention back to Joseph.
He smiled at them cryptically, his arms wide open as if embracing the world.
"Joseph! What is this madness?" Lyra demanded, her voice firm as she glared at him. "You know we have important matters to attend to—this is not the time for your nonsense."
Joseph grinned, undeterred. "It has come to my attention that since both of you could make me a Demon Lord, I am ready for that ascension. The glorious purpose that awaits me is just beyond the horizon."
His words hung in the air as the rest of the group stared at him, stunned.
Lyra and Yoshi exchanged a silent look before Yoshi chuckled lightly, covering his mouth. Then, in unison, they both responded to Joseph's bold declaration.
"No!" they said simultaneously.
"But the Archdemon said I would..." Joseph started, but was quickly cut off by Yoshi.
"Don't care!" Yoshi replied, his tone sharp and final.
"And that's even more reason to be cautious," Lyra added, her voice steady. She urged her horse forward, signaling for the group to continue their journey.
Yoshi gave Joseph a gentle pat on the shoulder as they rode ahead, leaving Joseph trailing behind. Despite their dismissal, Joseph pressed on, trying to convince them that becoming a Demon Lord would make him a more powerful asset to the team.
"If I became a Demon Lord, I wouldn’t have to rely on my Xentrocurnia Prime Tech Orb in combat anymore," Joseph argued. "I could be more independent, stronger, and you wouldn’t have to worry about me being a liability."
But his reasoning fell flat. Yoshi and Lyra remained unconvinced.
"Come on, guys!" Joseph called out, frustration creeping into his voice. "Without my powers, I’m barely an asset to the team! If not for my XPT, I’m constantly depending on it, and it's limited in so many ways." He winced as the XPT within him emitted a slight static shock, reacting to his words.
"Sorry, no offense," he said, turning to apologize to the orb inside him. "It’s totally true."
Suddenly, an idea struck him. He turned inward, addressing his XPT. "Hey, if Yoshi and Lyra won’t help me become a Demon Lord, could you do it for me?"
The XPT’s voice responded, a hint of annoyance in its tone. "Making you a Demon Lord would require a massive amount of my capabilities, Joseph. And considering my current state—at only 1% power—the chances of you actually becoming a Demon Lord are... well, about 0.0000000001%. If we're being generous."
Joseph’s eyes widened in disbelief. "What??? C'mon! I thought you were better than this!"
The XPT shot back, clearly offended. "Excuse me, mister! I’m just a prototype at best, and the way you’re speaking makes your request seem like a mockery of my abilities and function." Its voice now echoed loudly, causing the rest of the group to hear their entire conversation.
The XPT's frustration erupted. "You’ve been just as impatient as my primary user—a female variant of you, embedded within you—and reckless! If she had only waited for the advanced tech instead of stealing a prototype on her impulsive day, without asking any questions, none of you, or any of the variants fused within you, would be in this mess."
In a huff, the XPT suddenly left Joseph's body and vanished.
"Wait! No, I’m sorry!" Joseph cried out, but it was too late. The orb was gone.
The group watched as Joseph stood there, a mixture of shock and regret on his face. His companions exchanged uneasy glances, unsure of what to say. Yoshi rode over to him, concern flickering in his eyes. But to Yoshi's surprise, Joseph was already masking his internal hurt, offering a forced smile.
What neither Yoshi nor the others realized was that the XPT hadn't truly departed. Instead, it had projected a convincing hologram to make Joseph believe it was gone, while, in reality, it remained hidden inside him, silently biding its time.
Joseph, none the wiser, tried to push the feelings of abandonment aside.
"Nah! Not at all," Joseph said, shrugging it off with a casual wave. "XPT always comes back. Eventually."
He then proposed another idea to Yoshi and Lyra, suggesting they should train him to better control his abilities. His words were thoughtful, and the suggestion made sense to them. He playfully added that the chapter of the Fujimori Wisteria Forest Kingdom arc was almost coming to an end, and soon the author would move on to an entirely different arc and narrative.
He continued with a mischievous grin, "The author has totally gone off-script, diverting from the original plan and story drafting. Can you believe that? Each 200 chapters were supposed to have at least fifty chapters dedicated to each arc. Now look at us!" He paused, waiting for their reactions. Yoshi and Lyra exchanged puzzled looks before he shrugged it off playfully.
Despite his antics, Yoshi and Lyra reconsidered his request. Yoshi nodded thoughtfully. "Well, I could at least help you bypass a fraction of the seal on your forehead. It holds back half of your abilities. If we start there, we might make some progress."
Joseph grinned widely and, without missing a beat, leaned over in the saddle to embrace Yoshi warmly. They remained on their separate horses, but the gesture was genuine. With that settled, they continued their journey toward the neighboring region.
"The Infinite Tier has been a very bad boy or girl—or whatever they are—I don’t care," Joseph teased, his voice light but laced with conviction. "I’m going to put an end to their reign of terror."
"But don’t get me wrong," he continued, his tone growing more serious, "I’m eventually going to exceed every rank. I know it, not because it’s been foretold by the Archdemon, but because I can feel it in my gut. When I do, I’m going to save the world. Hell, I’m going to save all of creation from the Infinite Tier. Whoever or whatever they are, they better believe it. Dattebayo! Because I, Joseph Benjamin Carmen, am going to be the savior of this last Isekai world!"
With that, he raised a fist in the air, shouting with determination as he rode beside his companions. Some of the group stared at him, others smiled, while a few remained indifferent. Yoshi and Lyra, however, both shared a warm smile at his unshakable resolve.
Lyra's gaze grew distant, her voice softer now as she muttered to herself, "The Archdemon revealed many things, but what matters is what we choose to do with that knowledge."
The conversation dwindled into silence, leaving a thoughtful air hanging between them. For a moment, Joseph’s playful energy gave the group a brief reprieve from the weight of their thoughts. But beneath the surface, the unspoken question of what lay ahead lingered, quietly shadowing their journey to Takamatsu.
