Chapter 31 The chase in the secret tunnel

Chapter 31 The chase in the secret tunnel

Although Natalie gritted her teeth and accelerated to 100 km/h within 3.7 seconds, William's hands clenching on the steering wheel were quickly drenched with sweat. He didn't need to press the clutch pedal now, but his left foot was resting stiffly on the carbon fiber brake pedal. Ranran, the co-pilot, also held her white hand to her chest.

"Ah -- ah, where is he..." She cried softly.

William thought he heard Devil's scream close at hand.

"Don't worry, Master, we're coming to the first bend." With her eyes glaring at the sharp bend ahead, Natalie adjusted her tail shape early. Kinetic energy recycling electromagnetic brake system and electric motors on the front wheels allowed her to control her speed around bends just right.

"Vroom!" Devil chose the fastest route to the secret tunnel. His engine was so powerful that the sound was still clear as it reached William, two kilometers away.

Devil zoomed through a glass showcase in the lab. Moments later, the showcase already smashed to pieces.

"Hum," Snorted Natalie, as she blitzed along the long straight, "no matter how fast you're going, there's nothing you can do about the secret tunnel."

"Oh, no!" The screech of the brakes pierced the heavy air. Devil really overestimated his braking ability. He was about 30 meters in front of the brake point before starting to brake. In return, he has to sacrifice his perfect positioning. Meaning, he couldn't take the "out in out" route this time. But it was a blessing in disguise that his slight speed advantage quickly brought him to the outside shoulder at the bend.

"Not bad, is it? With all my experience, there's no bend I can't pass." He sneered, causing his mighty heart to roar again.

What was pity was that he would soon be laughed at in the cold merciless way of facts.

With her powerful hybrid system, Natalie got a commendable acceleration when leaving the bend. By this time, they had driven about four kilometers, and in front of them was the first spiral. "Master, come on!" She cried loudly and excitedly.

William placed both feet on the brake and the gas pedal, perfectly controlling the beast's speed. At the same time, he first approached the outside shoulder, then quickly turned left and stayed close to the inside shoulder. Ranran glimpsed the speedometer reading 60 km/h.

"You're brilliant, Natalie. That guy can't go through a bend as fast as you can." As William encouraged the car, she stretched out the exhaust pipes behind the front wheels and gave a few loud rumblings.

As soon as the 2km straight appeared, Natalie quickly placed herself on the outside shoulder and accelerated wildly. True to her name, "Natalie Hurricane" wasn't just a random thought of Mr Mighty -- he certainly gave her hurricane-like speed, and Uncle Sam, who ran Garage 95, was a helpful assistant.

"Vroom..." The car roared around the bend and headed for the dirt.

"Have fun, Natalie." Cried William, laughing, and pressing the gas further.

Ranran looked out of the window and saw Natalie's tires churning up a few meters of slippery dirt. They put out the tips of their brown tongues and licked the ceiling. The diesel rotary engine's distinctive low growl echoed back and forth, putting a lot of pressure on Devil in the rear. If he had been scornful of the little guy when he first entered the secret tunnel, he was now despairingly aware that his 560km/h maximum speed was nothing at all. It was this worrying braking ability and flexibility that forced him to endure the sharp bends that Natalie could have taken at twice his speed.

"What a lot of bends! Hum!" He cried angrily as he passed the spiral, "Why isn't there a longer straight?"

Then this dirt road was his nightmare. There was not enough torque in the high rev range to pull him out at high speeds, so he was only able to crawl at less than 200km/h.

Their distance had widened to about five kilometers. Enraged Devil howled almost as soon as the rear wheels were fully out of the detestable dirt, and the tires rubbed thick white smoke. Unfortunately, the time had not come for this fury, for the hairpin was coming.

He sighed and slowed down again to crawl through at 30 km/h.

Natalie, who had a great advantage, looked like a loach, deftly shuttling in the secret tunnel. And Devil was always restrained -- no, the chance for full release had not yet come.

Finally, the chance came. In front of him was a straight five kilometers long. Taking advantage of this golden opportunity, he quickly reduced the distance to about half.

Ranran's heart beat faster. "Are you all right, Natalie?" Her voice trembled.

"I'm fine. I'll be all right..." Said the racing car hesitantly, her eyes involuntarily glancing back.

The black shape had not yet appeared, but it was very close indeed.

After a few turns, their distance didn't change much. But suddenly Natalie began to feel dizzy. One moment her vision was clear, the next it was blurry. She blinked hard, but to no avail.

"What's the matter with you?" Nimble William was quick to detect the strange situation.

"I... Oh... I'm so dizzy......" She blinked more often and slowed down slightly. William anxiously saw that the speedometer read at 360 km/h.

"Is that the sports car?" Ranran asked William.

"Very likely." He replied gravely, braking again into a hairpin.

Devil's heart screamed furiously, as if it would tear everything apart. But then he glimpsed the fuel gauge closing in on the red line. "Oh, there's not much time! I can run for three minutes at most!" He thought in a panic.

Natalie turned a corner and stormed out again like lightning. When they came, they ignored a small device on the roof of the tunnel, which was the trigger of the bomb. At this moment it picked up the car. So, from there, the signal was sent instantly to Capsule Laboratory via a cable buried in the wall of the secret tunnel. As a result, in an unmarked, dark corner of the top floor of the laboratory, there suddenly came a regular sound "tick, tick".

This was the elaborate blasting device designed by the spider robot. The bombs were hidden not only in the hard walls of the laboratory, but also in the walls of the tunnel. In a few minutes, the best dream of the greatest scientist of the future would be dashed.

When she glimpsed a sign, Natalie knew she was near the exit. "Vroom..." The sports car stared menacingly into the distance, trying to fix his eyes on the blue-black figure.

But the spiral turned again to pull them apart. "Damn it!" When he finally came out of the bend and saw a five-kilometer straight ahead, Devil beat his chest and said, "I'm going to catch you on this long straight!"

The tires were burning the road and the fuel gauge was spinning fast. Although gasoline engines were synonymous with speed, yet fuel efficiency did not favor them. Instead, Natalie's 180-liter fuel tank could allow her to run for another a few hundreds of kilometers on support of leftover blue-algae diesel fuel.

The sports car was caught in the trap. He was still traveling at more than 400 km/h when the perfectly hidden hairpin suddenly appeared. The brakes screeched again, but all in vain. Devil slammed into the hard wall of the tunnel, leaving a huge scar on the front of the car.

No time to complain, he had to speed up again to catch up. But there was only enough fuel left to keep him going for a minute.

"Look! Exit!" When Natalie passed the final bend perfectly, she could see the vast light ahead in the distance. At last a huge smile appeared on the racing car's face. Then she gave a final frantic acceleration, letting the red-hot engine roar like a burst of thunder and rip the road beneath her feet.

Inside the lab, the ticks became more rapid. However, there was still a dead silence. Robots, no doubt, had been damaged; the only guard, the sports car, was making his last effort to catch the black, hurricane-like shadow before squeezing out the last drop of fuel.

The arched opening zoomed closer to William. Natalie made a great leap, drew a beautiful arc in the air, and landed outside on the vast expanse of grassland.

What a shame, Devil only had ten seconds left to run. When the powerful heart finally stopped beating, the lab's explosive device let out a blew of "Beep!".

"Boom!" The sky was burning and the earth was shaking. In a flash, the capsule-shaped building, which it had taken years to complete, as well as the secret tunnel carefully designed by Uncle Sam, went up in flames. Just a few hours ago, hundreds of "valuable experimental materials" were being trapped there, and it was not clear when they would once again follow in the footsteps of their predecessors and "make a modest contribution to the great biological weapons". Now, however, they had arrived safely at Thomson's tree house and were anxiously awaiting William's return.

Looking back, William saw the flames licking mercilessly at the tip of its hot tongue. He turned back and just shook his head gently and said nothing.

The car sped down the road along which they had come, in full view of passers-by on either side. She skimmed past Garage 95, as well as Sophia's cafe. Even when she passed the windowless building, she did not stop to admire the perfumes of violets and tulips in the fields on either side. All that remained on the road was the distant roar of the engine.

Natalie dashed into the maple trees. Only about half a minute later did she catch a glimpse of Black Ghost bombers ahead.

"We are here at last," She said with a sigh of relief.
