Unseen Puzzle

Kenzo lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling. While Kurokawa had taken Kaen off to train, Kenzo seized the chance to slip away. Why bother training for a fight that might not even happen if the mission went smoothly? He had better things to do with his time.

The more he thought about it, the more the conversation he had overheard gnawed at him. Why had Kurokawa and that woman been so worried about being overheard? They were agents, the higher-ups of this place—why should they be scared? It just didn’t make sense.

Kenzo also mulled over the identity of the woman. There were only two possibilities in his mind. First, Yaeko, the woman who had introduced them to the mission. She seemed to outrank even Kurokawa. But they didn’t seem close, at least not from the five minutes they had been together. Yet, the very nature of their jobs was to conceal and hide emotions. Maybe they were just doing a stellar job of hiding their connection and plans. The second possibility was that it was an entirely different woman, in which case Kenzo had nothing to go on. In either scenario, he couldn’t make any decisions until he met Yaeko again.

Determined to make sense of the situation, Kenzo crossed the room to his closet and pulled out an old, worn leather bag. From inside, he retrieved a notebook and pencil before settling down at the small wooden desk in the corner. He wrote “M.A. Group” at the top of the first page and listed the names of the agents he knew—Yaeko and Kurokawa. His knowledge about them was limited, but he made educated guesses about their ages: Kurokawa around 35, and Yaeko around 20.

Turning to the next page, he labeled it “The Team” and began jotting down all the information he knew about his teammates.

First, he wrote:

* Kaen: Annoying, clumsy, good at fistfights (he had to admit Kaen had beaten him after all).

* Gin: Energetic, very annoying, aggressive, fast, quick-witted.

* Ren: Avoids conflict, calm, not annoying, tries to make everyone cooperate (that’s annoying).

* Yuukie: Shy, quiet, stammers, bad at physical stuff, small.

He wanted to jot down their abilities, but he hadn’t paid attention when they had explained them.

Kenzo then turned the page again and tried to recall as much as possible of the conversation he had overheard that night. He cursed himself for not writing it down immediately. Every detail could be crucial, and he needed to piece it all together.
