Ability

The walk down to the football field was long. Not because it was a far distance no, because of the fog. Kaen had never seen fog in his life, books he had read mentioned something about fog but he had never imagined it to be like this. It was honestly quite scary. He pulled his burgundy jacket around him tighter, shivering. It was cold it was wet and it was hard to see. Honestly worse than rain, Kaen thought as he and Ren walked down the small path through the woods. It smelled like a wet dog, which only worsened the experience

“I’ve never seen fog before either, but don’t you think you are overreacting?” Ren laughed melodically as he took a few quick steps In front of Kaen.

“I’m not overreacting it’s super freaky,” He said as he tried to catch up with Ren.

“It’s just condensed water vapor,” He chuckled. “Didn’t understand a word you just said smart ass,” Kaen groaned trying to sound angry but he didn’t really mean it.

“If you actually think it’s that scary I’ll remove it for you, look” Ren stopped dead in his tracks, Kaen almost stumbling into him. Before he could ask what he was doing, Ren put his hand out in the air. He breathed in a big breath. First Kaen didn’t see anything, but then he started to see rain droplets forming out of the fog, it became a bigger and bigger rain droplet until it was as big as a basketball. Then he breathed out and the big water ball fell to the ground. Just as he had said it, the fog in front of them was gone.

“Whoa, is that your ability,” Kaen almost whispered entranced by the thing he just witnessed.

“Yes and no,” Ren said turning to him.

“My ability is all types of water manipulation,”

“No way! That’s so cool,” Kaen gasped, thinking his ability was even lamer than he already thought it was. “Well I can’t do it on a big scale, this is about the max I can do,” He said scratching the back of his head.

“Still cool though,” Kaen laughed, completely forgetting his fear of the fog as they now continued walking towards the field.

They were the last down at the field. The other three sat in the wet grass while Kurokawa stood above them, making him look taller than he already was.

“You’re late, we had to wait for you,” the girl with the braid groaned while stretching her arms. Kaen was about to say that she should mind her own business, but Kurokawa interrupted his thoughts. “Sit,” he said in a commanding tone while pointing at the ground. They did as they had been told and took a seat in the grass.

“You are all here today to train,” Kurokawa said as he started pacing around eyeing every one of them.

“We will have one week of intense training where you will learn how to be of use in the mission. After this training will you be ready to face The Rebellion?” He paused,

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

“The answer is no.” Kaen wasn’t surprised, how could he gain as much fighting experience in a week as one person had gained in a lifetime, it was impossible.

“But what should we do then?” The girl who almost vomited yesterday stammered, Kaen felt sorry for her she looked like the youngest here.

“I can train you how not to die, your mission will be very simple it’s not to fight or defeat these members it’s to trick them into running straight into our grasp,” He paused again before clapping his hands together.

“But that’s enough for now, You stand up,” Kurokawa pointed at the boy who Kaen had argued with yesterday. He had triangle-shaped earrings that shined a deep green color, they looked very expensive.

“Tell me your name and your ability,” He stood up and wiped off his brown dressing pants.

“My name is Kenzo, and my ability is plant creation, I can like make plants grow and shit,” Kaen made a face, why did a guy that rude get a cool ability? But he wasn’t that surprised, demons often had abilities that linked to their appearance. Like Ren, he had blue eyes and white-blue hair, and he could manipulate water. Green hair and green eyes seemed like it had something to do with nature. Scientists didn’t know why this was but they thought it had something to do with the environment you live in with a mix of genetics. They would have probably figured out why this was a long time ago but the underground didn’t exactly have a big funding for science. And humans didn’t bother with things concerning demons, especially not their abilities.

“Now you,” Kurokawa said as Kenzo sat down. The girl Kaen thought looked like the youngest stood up.

“Hi, um I’m Yuukie Fujisaki and my ability is wind manipulation, I think.” she quickly sat down again pulling her big green hoodie over her knees. Kurokawa didn’t even have to say anything this time, the girl with the braid stood up on her own.

"I’m Gin and my ability is that I can control metal, I’m also the underground’s best mechanic,” she smiled a big grin so her fangs showed and then she sat down again, Kaen thought she was annoying. Was this really the best time to brag? Ren stood up next.

“Hello, I’m Ren I can manipulate water,” He gave everyone a quick smile before gesturing to Kaen. Kaen knew he had to introduce himself too, he felt out of place. Everyone had a cool ability, being able to control something or create something, he was just; Oh well if I’m cold I can always warm myself up. He couldn’t even make another person warm they would just get even colder since he would suck all the warmth out from the air.

“Stand up,” Kurokawa said, staring him down with his chocolate brown eyes. Kaen sighed.

“Ah well, I’m Kaen and my ability is heat manipulation,” He said trying to make it sound as cool as possible.

“What’s that, you regulate temperature or what, in that case, could you make it a little warmer?” Gin said looking over at him. Shit, did she really have to ask that?

" Well I can make myself warm but in exchange, I make my surroundings colder,” he mumbled trying to make it so they couldn’t hear. But it was too late.

“Hah! You can’t do shit then dude,” Gin laughed as she held her stomach, it wasn’t even that funny. Kaen sunk down in the grass again, feeling a bit humiliated but mostly pissed off. He would have probably hurled at her if Kurokawa weren’t there, he wasn’t about to get fired today. “Okay well,” he cleared his voice.

“Since you are all feeling so very competitive with your teammates,” Kurokawa said looking at Gin.

“I want you to run laps around the field till you can’t run anymore, the one who lasts the longest wins breakfast,”

“Aww come on,” everyone groaned. Kaen didn’t though he liked running, he was also very hungry which was a good motivation. He’d definitely win this breakfast.
