Chapter 12 - Memories of the Past

There was nothing. It was empty. Blank. Nothing.

They scanned about, seeking something. But they couldn’t. The empty void held nothing within.

It was empty. So empty. Empty.

As they continued to exist, and as they noticed the emptiness, and began to endlessly wail into the vast boid, in the back of their head a small thought grew. The train of thought endlessly chugged down the tracks, picking up some little bits and pieces, compiling and reorganising and retrying different ideas.

They still wailed as their mind continued, but it didn’t matter. All they needed was time, and they had plenty of it.

The idea formed, why not make something, anything, to fill this void of theirs? It continued, noticing how they had something tethered to them. It was the void itself, but maybe it’s not truly nothingness. As the idea fully formed, their wails grew quieter, fading slowly, until finally, it stopped. And they began to focus. They felt themselves. They felt the void. They felt the tether, no conjoined nature of them. They were the void, and they were the resident in the void. They were the mind of the nothingness. And they wished to no longer be alone. They took themself, they took the infinity of themself and tore a fragment off. They took this fragment and began to experiment. They stretched, they bent, they broke, they expanded, they contracted, they made it bigger, and they made it smaller.

With basic manipulations complete, they began to make different, far more complex changes. They made a mind, a companion. This mind formed and began to break down immediately after its release from their power. They grabbed it again, fixing the corroded parts. They began to think, what could they do? Why was it corroded? Perhaps this void was the problem. They took another part, taking care to release neither the mind nor the new piece, and began to form something. Into it, they imbued great will, that it could store anything without their void corroding it. With such a space crafted, they released it, nervous.

It existed there, something else in the void of nothingness. The mind didn’t count, it couldn’t exist without their influence, and while under their influence, it couldn’t think. But, with this new creation, it could. They pushed the mind into the bubble, the bubble of something. No. The Bubble of Reality.

With the mind successfully transferred, they watched with bated breath the mind awaken. As it awoke, they realized something. The bubble they were placed in, you couldn’t see beyond. Thus, it couldn’t see them.

While opening such a view would likely create major problems, they instead made a physical vessel. As they began, they had an idea. So instead of creating outside the bubble, they would instead create within the bubble.

As the formation began, the mind watched. The body came together, a gelatinous blob. Satisfied with their creation, they connected it to themselves. Now, they were the blob, as well as the void, and, to their surprise, a mind in the void. As they thought with their void self, they began to attempt communication with the mind. The void self concluded that the void, much like that blob until moments ago, held no mind of its own. And, without the careful direction of a mind, randomly produced a mind. This mind was themself, and due to the spontaneous creation, they didn’t immediately know they were the void.

Meanwhile, communication was going terribly. They both couldn’t make sounds, or transfer thoughts to each other. Fundamentally, they couldn’t transfer their thoughts, ideas, emotions, or anything to each other.

The void mind got to work, making a carefully adjusted connection between the blob mind and the vesselless mind, which would hopefully allow for communication.

The blob didn’t react to the tethering, it was still the void mind after all, even if a separate mind. The shelless one though? It panicked, leading to the void mind putting it to sleep to tether properly.

With the tether properly attached, the blob mind got to work testing it. Prevention of other side communication… check. Regular communication… check. Communication has to be active… check.

With the main features functioning as intended, the void mind reawoke the mind. And it worked!

After the forceful nap, the mind had calmed down, and with the tether in place, was already communicating. Their conversation started boring, just introductions of who and what they were, it began to slowly get more interesting. They both began to experiment with their powers, and the void mind got to thinking in the meantime.

The blob could wield the void within itself, an eternally replicating resource. When the void mind realized that a) void could duplicate itself, and b) the blob didn’t have its powers, it took the tether between itself and the blob and carefully cut it. The blob collapsed temporarily, before coming back together, to the surprise and relief of the other mind.

The blob was now free. It was now its own being. This somewhat saddened the void mind, but it didn’t mind much. It was practically its own being already, so they just made it official. They even watched to make sure the blob retained its power. Upon confirming that, the void mind went back to thinking.

The mind continued to talk with the blob, eventually revealing it had no powers. It simply existed. The blob couldn’t let such a thing happen to its friend, the endless monotony of powerless eternal existence. It started by trying to give its void, but that failed. As soon as the void left them, without a clear goal it began to corrode. The mind slowly convinced them they couldn’t even control such a power. So the blob began to think. And it came up with an idea. Telling the mind of its plan, it requested that it not resist anything. So it gathered its void, and parts of itself, and grabbed the tether tightly. It drew the mind within itself and used the void to carefully split itself in two. One part held the blobs mind, the other the vesselless mind. It split its void in two and gave one half to the other half of its body. It used the void to tie the mind to the body, but it failed. The mind however had lost its protection in the process, a requirement to tie the mind properly. As the blob watched, its only friend began to fade, dissipating into basically nothing.

The mind told them not to feel sad, that it was alright. It wasn’t their fault. The blob was wrapped in sadness, its void reacting to the strong emotion to drip from the section they use to look.

The void mind was deep in its work, constructing a mechanism to automatically create worlds, ignorant of the passing of the mind. With the mechanism finished, they merged it with the bubble to make endlessly expanding worlds.

The blob hardly noticed though. A world appeared, tied to their sadness and grief. A land, an entire world was made around them. All they did was sit, their shape changing as they lay there. Their shape began to have limbs, an arm, another, a leg, another. A head began to form, and so did a torso. Their arms grew stubs, which grew fingers and joints. Their legs grew lumps, which elongated and formed toes. As their grief continued, their transformation ended, leaving them indistinguishable from a human.

Around them, among the grassy fields, slowly grew white lilies. The other half of them lay there as well, unchanged. But as their sorrow continued, the ground opened before the former blob, a small pile appearing a short distance away. The body began to move, the dirt and soil rising and falling to move the body. The hole began to shape itself, forming a rectangular shape. The lilies began to gather in a swirl, and the stone deep within the ground began to rise. The body slid gently into the hole, with lily petals falling all around, and the small mound moved back over to bury the body. With the grave filled, the lilies fell one final time, layering the grave and etching onto the stone tablet sitting at the head of the grave “Here lies Laya”.

The void mind had returned to the void, still ignorant of the death of Laya. They dissolved themselves into the void, to return to who they once were.
