Chapter 13

Chapter 13

The sweet dreams of a candy wonderland were gently nudged aside by the warm rays of the sun, kissing our cheeks and beckoning us to a bright new day. I opened my eyes, momentarily disoriented by the lack of a gingerbread ceiling, only to realize that the delectable house had vanished, just as the timer had predicted, leaving us all outside on a lush carpet of grass.

Stella's sigh confirmed my suspicion that she was annoyed but not surprised. "Blake, did you really have to summon a fairy tale for us, only to have it disappear by morning? I'm guessing all that wonderful food is gone too?"

I stood up, stretching and surveying our surroundings, trying to suppress a grin at the overnight transformation. "Sorry, I should have warned you. The house and all its contents were on a timer."

Emma and Jacob were staring at me, their eyes wide and mouths open. They were now looking at the tall, lanky, and, in my opinion, quite attractive version of Blake rather than the pink-haired, pigtailed gnome they'd seen the night before. The confusion in their eyes was almost comical.

"What... what happened to you?" Emma finally stammered, her eyes darting between my current form and the spot where the gingerbread house once stood.

"I change," I explained casually, wiggling my fingers as if it were a magical trick. "It's part of the whole 'game character' thing. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the gingerbread house while it lasted."

Jacob shook his head, squinting in the morning sunlight. "This is unreal. One minute we're feasting on a Winterfest dinner in a house made of candy, and the next we're waking up to a bright new day, and you've turned into someone else."

Stella, having recovered from the initial surprise, was already in action mode. "We need to figure out our next move. Without the shelter and food, we'll need to plan carefully. Blake, you mentioned you had other items that might be useful?"

I nodded, considering our options. "I've got tents, food, weapons, but most of them are level-locked. We'll have to test what works."

A thoughtful look crossed Stella's face. "Your 'cheat skill' could be a game-changer. If we can utilize these items from your world, we'll have an advantage."

Emma seemed to have regained her composure, a determined spark in her eye. "And we'll need every advantage we can get. We're in this together, right?"

I grinned, feeling a renewed sense of camaraderie in the bright morning light. Despite my normal gruffness I was a little moved by Emma’s youthful optimism. "Right. Let's see what else I can pull out of my inventory. And don't worry about breakfast; I think I have some adventurer's rations tucked away somewhere. Stella, I can’t seem to access my inventory unless I'm one of my game characters. What do you think would be the best choice for us for the foreseeable future or at the very least for the rest of the day?”

“So far I know you can be a frontline Paladin with minor heals and are nearly indestructible, or you can be a priest with god-like heals and resurrection. My question is, what other options do you have?” Stella said, trying to figure out how insane my abilities were.

“Well, let's see… I will start at the top of the list and go down: Paladin, Priest, Mage, Warlock, Monk, Hunter, Rogue, Warrior, Shaman, Necromancer. Of those, which do you think would be the most advantageous?” I asked as I looked up to see horror on Stella’s face yet again. “What now?”

This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

“You are a Necromancer and Warlock? Those are evil classes and outlawed by every kingdom in the world!” Stella said in disgust.

“So not Necro or Lock. Check.” I said flippantly. “That still leaves us with 8 choices.”

“I don’t know what most of the rest are, though. What do you have that would help the best with our group's survival and keep us incognito in town?” Stella asked, letting some of her unease slide away.

“Well, Paladin, Priest, Monk, and Shaman are all hybrid classes with damage and healing abilities. Paladin may be bad because of the High Elf thing. Priest doesn’t seem good because her damage is terrible. Shaman may be the best choice, but how do people react to Minotaurs?” I asked.

“Minotaurs? You mean the mythical magical beast man who protects the labyrinth dungeon that nobody has ever completed because it's a level 100 raid dungeon requiring 50 people? I think seeing one out walking around may get a little attention,” She said in exasperation.

“Monk it is. He's at least human, but he’s a hand-to-hand combat fighter and uses Chi to heal and do damage. Much better healer than the Paladin and much more damage than the priest. I really hate being this guy. I thought it would be so funny to make a fat monk and name him Monkmcfatty, and now I get to run around as him. Karma is a bitch,” I said in defeat. Focusing on my Class Menu dropdown box, I selected (Monk)Monkmcfatty, and a golden light in the shape of Buddha exploded out of me, and when it cleared, there I stood, a 5-foot 8-inch, totally bald chubby Monk in full garb.

I could see the looks of amazement on Jacob and Emma’s faces, but all Stella showed on her face was amusement at my predicament. “Not a word. I'm going to get us breakfast, and then we will figure out where to go from here.”

I knelt down, focusing on my inventory screen that only I could see. The others watched me with curious anticipation as I navigated through various menus, searching for the right items. "Ah, here we go," I said, a triumphant smile on my face.

With a wave of my hand, a couple of boxes appeared on the grass in front of us. The first one I opened contained a collection of slender bottles filled with shimmering golden liquid. The second held packages of neatly wrapped food, labeled "Hearty Breakfast."

"Feast your eyes on these," I announced, holding up one of the bottles. "Apple juice with an agility buff, crafted by one of my other characters. And for our main course, a Hearty Breakfast Buff meal. It gives a boost of 50 stamina and vitality for the day."

Stella's eyes widened, and she quickly moved to inspect the items. "This is incredible, Blake. If these work, it could change everything for our journey."

Jacob looked dubious but intrigued, cautiously taking one of the bottles and turning it over in his hands. "It looks like regular apple juice."

I chuckled. "Taste it, and you'll see. The buff will take effect shortly after you drink it."

Emma unwrapped one of the Hearty Breakfast packages, her eyes lighting up at the assortment of eggs, bacon, and fresh fruit. "It looks amazing. How did you manage to have all these things?"

"I come from a world filled with games with fantastical elements and a virtual inventory system," I explained, pouring the apple juice into glasses for everyone. "It has its perks."

We all sat down to enjoy our enhanced breakfast, talking and laughing, feeling a bond that was growing into a powerful team dynamic. The food tasted wonderful, and the juice had a refreshing flavor, leaving a tingling sensation that seemed to increase our agility.

"So, what's our plan for the day?" Stella asked, turning to me with expectation in her eyes, glowing with fresh energy.

I surveyed the surroundings and pondered our current situation before answering. "We should take advantage of these enhancements to cover as much ground as possible. Our objective is to reach the next settlement and gather information."

Emma nodded, her eyes filled with determination. "We have the upper hand now. Let's maximize it."

With renewed vigor, we quickly packed up our belongings and set out on our journey.
