Speak of the Devil (POV: Rose)

Speak of the Devil (POV: Rose)

Things were going well for the Siren’s Call. The new recruit was fitting right in, learning the ropes well and proving to be a great addition to the crew, and after our last raid, the Call had been laden with exotic spices and bergamot that we sold for a small fortune back at port. More than enough to pay for whatever r and r the men desired.

There was one thing that could make things even better though, I caught myself thinking. Something the Cordia could never replace.

The new recruit in question ran up to me,worry clear on her face, breaking me out of my thoughts. “Captain! I’ve spotted a pirate ship on the horizon. Should we try to avoid it or engage?”

“That depends.” I said “What's her flag like?”

“Its…similar to ours ma’am, but the positions of the mermaid and skull are swapped.”

My face split into a massive grin.

“Speak of the devil and he shall appear. Don’t you worry your pretty little head, lass.” I said, stepping away. “Awrite, men, I want us headed towards that ship fast as possible.

Before long we reached the other ship, which was on its way to us just as quickly.

The gangplanks lowered and a pair of shiny black boots stepped onto my ship. Inside of them was a tall, broad man with hair and a beard just as black.

I marched towards him. “Captain James Darcy you sorry fucker!” I called. “You’ve got a lot of nerve showing your face around my ship.”

The two of us glared at each other like two unstoppable forces, my hands planted firmly on my hips, his arms crossed.

He broke first, cracking a smile and laughing quietly.

I pulled him in for a passionate kiss, doffing my hat so as to not collide with his.

He kissed me back with the vigor of a man starved.

“What took you so long, idiot?” I asked after I pulled away.

“Ran into some trouble with the navy over by the Bahamas.” he said. “But I’m here now.” he held me tighter.

He pulled away to look over my crew. “I see there’s a new face.” he said.

I turned to where he was facing to see Abigail, barely catching a glimpse of shock before she tried to compose herself.

“This is Abigail, my newest recruit. Caught her stowing away in the hull, running from her piece of shit husband.” I introduced her.

“Hello.” she said tersely.

“Pleased to meet you, m’lady.” He smiled warmly.

Abigail did not smile back.

I couldn’t help but wonder what was wrong, though I had a few ideas.
