Always the Bridesmaid (POV: Mateo)

Always the Bridesmaid (POV: Mateo)

As I trudged back onboard the Call, I wasn’t entirely sure what I planned to do when I reached my galley. Maybe it needed cleaning or maybe the pots needed…counting.

At any rate, I wasn’t ready for bed yet and I really had nothing better to do than sit in my room at the inn and pretend I didn’t know what my friends were doing. At least here I could keep myself occupied. Besides, the galley was a place all my own and that was a comfort.

“Lovely evening isn’t it Mateo?”

I nearly jumped out of my skin.

I turned to see the ship's surgeon, sighing in relief. “Hi Wén. What are you doing here?”

“Had some things to take care of in sick bay. Just because we’re at port doesn’t mean emergencies can’t happen. And I told you, we’ve been sailing together for years, my given name is fine.”

“Everyone else calls you Wén, though.” I said, fidgeting uncertainly.

Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

Wén treated me to a pinched but patient expression.

“So what are you doing here?” he asked, relaxing his face.

“Oh I was just”-about to count the pots-“feeling lonely.”

“Being away from the rest of the crew is an interesting remedy for that.” he said. “Unless you came here to see me.”

I laughed nervously “I certainly wasn’t expecting to run into anyone here. Though I am glad to see you.”

He smiled at that. “And I you.” he walked over to rest his arms in the railing and looked up at the sky “After all, the stars are beautiful tonight, it’s nice to have someone to share them with.”

I joined him at the railing.

“This wouldn’t have anything to do with Darcy and Pearl hogging the captain and Abigail, would it,” he asked

I nodded

“You know,” he said, touching my hand, “if you’re ever lonely, I’m always here.”

I felt my cheeks heat a little at that. “Thanks Anfang.”
