A few weeks later, Leo found himself in his room, surrounded by half-packed boxes.
He meticulously sorted through his belongings, selecting only the essentials—clothes, shoes, and a few personal items.
Among these were some of his weapons, which he regarded as an extension of himself.
As he moved to pack them, he paused, a thought striking him with unexpected clarity.
Maybe I shouldn't pack my weapons... I feel like it might make them uncomfortable, he mused, considering the new life he was about to step into.
The idea of carrying these artifacts of his old life into a world of normalcy seemed jarring, out of place.
Just as he contemplated this, the door creaked open, and Yukana stepped inside, her expression tinged with a mix of emotions.
"So... you're leaving today, huh?" she asked, her voice carrying a note of sadness.
Leo turned to her, offering a small, reassuring smile. "Yeah, pretty much... but I should be grateful. He could have sentenced me to death, but I'm actually getting off pretty easily."
The weight of his words hung in the air, a testament to the gravity of his situation.
Yet, there was an underlying sense of relief and gratitude in his tone, acknowledging the opportunity Cross had given him—a chance to rediscover his humanity outside the confines of their world.
Yukana nodded, understanding the significance of his departure.
"You'll be missed," she admitted, stepping forward to offer a supportive hug. "But I believe this is a good chance for you. To find out who you are beyond all of this."
Leo returned the embrace, feeling the warmth of her friendship and support. "Thank you, Yukana. I hope to make the most of it."
As he resumed packing, he left the weapons aside, deciding that they belonged to another chapter of his life—a chapter that he was ready to leave behind as he embarked on this new journey.
"Oh, but I've got a surprise for you, Leo," Yukana announced with a big smile, her eyes sparkling with mischief. Leo raised an eyebrow, clearly puzzled. "What's up?" he asked, curiosity piqued.
Without another word, Yukana took his hand and led him out of the room. "Close your eyes, Leo," she instructed playfully.
Leo complied, a slight smile tugging at his lips. Okay, this is new. I wonder what's going on, he thought, allowing himself to be guided down the hallway.
Yukana stopped, positioning herself behind him, her hands gently covering his eyes. "Are you ready?" she asked, her voice brimming with excitement.
Leo nodded, anticipation building within him. When Yukana removed her hands, he blinked, adjusting to the light.
To his astonishment, he found himself standing in the cafeteria, surrounded by all his friends and comrades.
Cross, Vagan, Boon-Nam, Ike, Prudenzio, Suhal, and Elara stood at the forefront, beaming with pride and affection.
Then, from every corner of the room, more familiar faces emerged.
The elite S-rank members—Yoon Ga-ram, Verona Strobel, Rosa Negra Cisneros, Altaïr Eirikr, Ryota Takeda, Revy Mcgarden, Fabiola Francisca, Amara Webb, Enzo Suwa, Hyon Seung-Woo, and Cole Cooke—all appeared, their presence a testament to the bonds he'd formed within the fraternity.
"Happy birthday, Leo!" they all shouted in unison, their voices echoing joyously through the cafeteria.
Leo stood there, momentarily stunned, a wave of emotion washing over him.
It wasn't just a surprise party; it was a celebration of him, his journey, and the connection he shared with each of them.
For someone who struggled to express emotions, this moment was overwhelming in its warmth and sincerity.
A genuine smile spread across his face, rare and radiant, as he took in the sight of his friends gathered in his honor.
It was a reminder that despite the challenges ahead, he was not alone—he had a family that cared deeply for him, supporting him every step of the way.
"A birthday party? But you don't even know my real birthday, guys," Leo remarked, still processing the surprise.
Vagan chuckled, waving off Leo's logical protest. "Come on, bro, don't pull the 'logic' card on us, man! We know it's not your real birthday. We're celebrating the day you came here, July 17th, 2000."
"Yeah, bro," Revy chimed in, slinging an arm around his shoulder with a playful grin.
"You need to just enjoy the moment, go with the flow." She playfully punched his arm, laughter bubbling up around them.
"Rev's got a point," Ryota agreed, nodding. "The whole point of this is to show that we care about you greatly."
"He pretty much saved all of our asses," Cole added, drawing a round of nods and chuckles from the group.
Yoon Ga-ram wrapped her arms around Leo's, leaning in with a teasing smile.
"You are the most awesome person we've ever had the honor of meeting," she said, pressing closer, which briefly flustered Leo.
Yukana and Fabiola exchanged glances, a flicker of jealousy sparking between them at Yoon Ga-ram's forwardness.
Leo stood amidst the lively banter and camaraderie, momentarily speechless. Inside, a realization dawned on him.
Wow, I had such a positive impression on all of their lives? I never knew. I thought I was just doing whatever was necessary, that it wasn't even that big of a deal... But I guess I do have a positive impact on people's lives.
This newfound awareness brought a warmth to his heart, a feeling that went beyond words.
In that moment, surrounded by friends and comrades who genuinely cared for him, Leo understood the profound connections he'd formed, and it filled him with gratitude and a sense of belonging he'd never fully acknowledged before.
As the party continued, the atmosphere was filled with laughter and joy.
Leo, who was renowned for his unmatched skills, effortlessly won every game, leaving the younger members both in awe and in good spirits.
His genuine smile never left his face, a rare sight that captured the essence of happiness as he reveled in the camaraderie around him.
Watching from the sidelines, Boon-Nam observed with a soft smile. "For as long as I've known him, this is the longest time I've ever seen him smiling," he remarked, taking pleasure in Leo's visible joy.
Prudenzio nodded in agreement. "I concur. Leo often comes across as emotionless with his stoic demeanor, but the little angelus ab inferno deserves to be happy."
Elara giggled at the nickname. "Angel from hell? That's a fitting title for him. He's quite handsome, at least according to the girls," she said with a teasing glance at Yukana, Yoon Ga-ram, and Fabiola, who were all vying for Leo's attention.
Suhal, watching the scene unfold, felt a surprising warmth spread through him.
"I've been a ruthless assassin for years, relishing in the suffering of my targets," he mused, reflecting on his past.
Yet, witnessing the carefree joy of the younger members, he couldn't help but smile slightly. "This place must have made me soft... but I'm okay with that.”
Boon-Nam, noticing his softened expression, flashed him a playful grin. "What is it, Boon-Nam?" Suhal asked, a bit defensive.
"That's the first time you've said my name properly," she teased, catching him off guard and making him slightly flustered.
"Whatever," he muttered, trying to brush it off.
"Seems like they've got you soft," she teased further, prompting a quick reaction from him.
"Who are you calling soft, shortie?" he retorted, raising his voice in mock indignation.
Boon-Nam simply walked away, her laughter trailing behind her, leaving Suhal to shake his head with a wry smile.
The playful exchange and the lighthearted atmosphere were testament to the bonds that had formed within the fraternity, allowing even the most hardened individuals to find moments of softness and connection.
Cross stood quietly, observing the joyful chaos that unfolded around him.
His mind drifted to memories of his own youth, a time filled with happiness and camaraderie before the weight of the chosen selection changed everything.
This was what we had all those years ago... So young, happy, before the chosen selection, he reflected, a bittersweet mixture of nostalgia and longing washing over him.
Elara joined him, settling down beside him with a knowing smile. "They remind you of us back then?" she asked, picking up on his contemplative mood.
"Yeah, that's what I'm thinking about," Cross admitted, his gaze still fixed on the lively scene before them. "But I just realized something."
Elara's expression grew serious, sensing the shift in his tone. "Yeah, the strongest test is coming up... in a few years, actually."
Cross nodded, meeting her eyes. "When the fraternity tests one branch's strongest against the strongest from other branches. This is, by far, the biggest generation in the fraternity's history, but maybe the weakest.”
The weight of his words lingered between them, a reminder of the challenges that lay ahead.
The upcoming test would be a defining moment, not just for Leo and his peers, but for the fraternity as a whole.
While this generation had shown remarkable potential, their relative inexperience and the unprecedented nature of the test posed unique challenges.
"Yeah, but it's only going to happen seven years from now. So can't we just enjoy Leo's birthday? After all, it's a party, let's enjoy it," Elara suggested, her voice light and encouraging as she took Cross's hand, trying to steer his focus back to the present.
Cross's hand trembled slightly in hers, and he quickly withdrew it, an action that didn't go unnoticed. "It's worse, huh?" Elara asked, concern evident in her eyes.
"It's nothing... I've been taking care of it, the medicine is working," Cross replied, attempting to brush off her worry with a casual tone.
Elara wasn't convinced. "Dario, I care about you... So you should really try and take it easy. I know why you try to act strong for them, but it won't work for me."
Her words cut through his defenses, reaching the part of him that was all too aware of his vulnerabilities.
Cross sighed, acknowledging the truth in her concern. "I know," he admitted softly, casting a glance at the lively scene around them. "It's just... there's a lot on my mind. But you're right, today is about Leo."
Elara squeezed his shoulder reassuringly, offering him a warm smile. "Exactly. Let's focus on the present and make sure Leo feels loved and appreciated."
Cross nodded, allowing himself to relax a little. The tremor in his hand was a silent reminder of his struggles, but Elara's presence provided comfort.
Together, they turned their attention back to the celebration, joining in the laughter and festivities, determined to make the day memorable for Leo and everyone else.
As they watched the younger members celebrate, Cross felt a renewed sense of responsibility.
It was crucial to prepare them for what was coming, to ensure they were ready to face the trials and emerge stronger.
Yet, amidst the gravity of his thoughts, there was also hope—hope that this new generation would find their own path, learn from the past, and perhaps redefine what it meant to be part of the fraternity.
After enjoying various games and laughter, the moment came to bring out the birthday cake.
It was a delightful confection adorned with candles shaped in the number 12, signifying the day they chose to celebrate Leo's arrival into their lives.
As the cake was placed in front of Leo, everyone gathered around, singing in unison:
♪ Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Leo, happy birthday to you! ♪
The room resonated with joy and camaraderie. As the song concluded, they continued the playful tradition:
♪ How old are you? ♪
"12," Leo replied promptly.
♪ How old are you? ♪ they repeated, continuing the lighthearted ritual.
"I just told you guys," Leo responded bluntly, his straightforwardness eliciting a wave of laughter from the group.
"God damn it, Leo, it's part of the—Never mind, just blow out the candles!" Yukana exclaimed, shaking her head with amusement as the laughter continued to ripple through the crowd.
With a small, rare smile, Leo leaned forward and blew out the candles, the room erupting in cheers and applause.
It was a moment of togetherness and celebration, highlighting the bonds they'd formed and the joy they found in each other's company.
After the party, Cross volunteered to drive Leo to his next destination.
As Leo walked towards the car, he paused halfway, turning to look back at the group of friends and mentors gathered to bid him farewell.
The sight of their waving hands and smiling faces was both heartwarming and bittersweet.
"Goodbye, Leo!" his friends called out, their voices filled with a mix of sadness and encouragement.
"This is not a goodbye," Leo reassured them, his voice steady and confident. "More like see you later."
"I'll miss you every day! You better keep in touch, you hear me!?" Yukana shouted, her face a mix of flustered emotions.
"Yeah, bro, try not to stick out too much!" Vagan added with a grin.
"You did so much for us, and for me! I'll never forget how you helped me contact my family!" Fabiola said, her gratitude evident.
"How you're always quick to help others out when you can, even when you see it as no big deal!" Yoon Ga-ram chimed in.
"How you always pushed us to get together!" Altaïr added.
"How you taught me to shoot a gun from the most unexpected angles!" Ryota said.
"How to reassemble and disassemble guns and modify them!" Revy contributed.
"And so much more than we can even count!" they all echoed together, their voices blending into a chorus of appreciation and fond memories.
Leo stood there, absorbing their words, feeling the weight and warmth of their gratitude and friendship.
It was a testament to the impact he had made, not just as a skilled member of their group, but as a friend who had touched each of their lives in meaningful ways.
With a nod and a wave, Leo turned back towards the car, knowing that while he was stepping into a new chapter, the bonds he'd formed would remain strong, a constant presence in his life.
As he settled into the car beside Cross, he carried their words with him, a reminder of the family he'd found and the home he'd always have with them.
In the car, Leo gazed out the window, contemplating what his new life might entail.
He turned slightly to glance at Cross, curiosity evident in his eyes. "So... what's up next?"
Cross offered a small smile, a hint of pride in his voice as he explained. "I asked Governor Bobby Jindal to pull some strings to get you into the foster care system. I also had some friends who were eager to adopt. When I mentioned you, his wife immediately said, 'Adopt him right now!' and from there, it was straightforward.”
Leo frowned, puzzled. "But isn't Bobby Jindal known for being uncorruptible? How did you even manage that?"
Cross let out a soft laugh. "He wasn't, but fortunately, he read the protocol while dealing with the fraternity."
Leo's confusion deepened. "We have a protocol?"
Cross nodded, delving into the history. "You see, the fraternity originated in Egypt as a sacred order designed to maintain balance in the region. We worked under Pharaoh Ramesses II, who aimed for peace. He even instructed us to take action against him if he ever became corrupt. After his death, we continued our mission, establishing bases worldwide. Our branch has been here since Louisiana was founded by American soldiers. We wield such influence that we ensured fair treatment for slaves during segregation and beyond. So, a protocol was established to grant us whatever we needed because they understand—and we understand—that they can't win against us. The only way they could technically defeat our branch would be by deploying the National Guard."
Leo listened intently, absorbing the weight of the history and power that Cross described.
It was a lot to take in, the realization of the fraternity's influence both daunting and impressive.
But amidst all this, he felt a sense of reassurance, knowing that Cross and the fraternity were looking out for him, ensuring his path was carefully paved.
"So, are my guardians part of the fraternity?" Leo asked, curiosity lacing his words.
Cross shook his head with a slight grin. "Actually, no, but slightly better. They're former assassins."
Leo's eyes widened in surprise. "Like... international assassins?"
"Yep," Cross confirmed. "So you'll fit in just fine. Don't worry about being yourself around them. Just one thing—don't bring up the fact of being an assassin to their daughter, okay?"
Leo sighed, a mix of resignation and amusement on his face. "Oh, Yahawah... This is just great. Now I have to be myself and not be myself? You're putting me in a paradox, Mr. Cross.”
Cross chuckled at Leo's playful complaint. "I'm glad you still have that sense of attitude, Leo, you little bastard."
"You don't know I'm born out of Whitlock, so that term is technically invalid," Leo retorted with a smirk.
Cross, aware of the true origins of Leo but choosing to keep it to himself for now, simply sighed. "Yes, Leo... you're right, I don't know."
The exchange between them was lighthearted, a testament to the bond they had developed over time.
Despite the complexities of Leo's situation and the weight of the future, moments like these, filled with humor and camaraderie, provided a sense of normalcy and comfort.
As the car continued its journey, Leo felt a little more at ease, knowing he had allies who understood him and a future that, while uncertain, was guided by people who genuinely cared.
As they arrived at the foster care system building, Leo's attention was immediately captured by his foster mother, who wasted no time in expressing her enthusiasm.
"Oh my gosh!! You really do look just as handsome and adorable as Dario said!" she exclaimed, her hands gently cupping his cheeks and running through his curly hair.
"OHHH! Your hair is so beautiful and perfectly curly! Is this natural, or do you style it?" Her excitement was palpable, and Leo was momentarily taken aback by her bubbly curiosity and fascination.
Before he could respond, her husband gently intervened, pulling her back slightly.
"Honey, you're confusing the boy. I know you're excited, but geez..." he said, clearly amused yet slightly embarrassed.
Cross chuckled at the scene, enjoying Leo's bewilderment. "Well, I guess it's love at first sight, huh Maes?" he teased.
Maes nodded, grinning sheepishly. "Yeah, she was a pro assassin in the past, but she always has a weakness for cute things. Lilia just can't control herself."
Lilia responded with a playful pout, crossing her arms in mock frustration. "I can't help it! He's just so adorable!"
Leo, still processing the whirlwind of attention, managed a small smile, feeling a warmth in the genuine affection of his new foster parents.
Though the situation was new and a bit overwhelming, he sensed that he was in good hands, surrounded by people who were ready to welcome him into their family with open hearts.
"Leo, let me introduce you to your foster family, the Hughes," Cross began, gesturing towards Maes. "This is Maes Hughes. He's a former Delta Force soldier. I met him during a mission I had in Iraq a few years ago. He was an elite of the elites at the tender age of 18, achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class before being honorably discharged.”
Cross's tone was filled with pride as he spoke about Maes, highlighting his impressive background and the respect he had for him.
Maes gave a modest nod, a friendly smile on his face, embodying both warmth and strength.
"I'm really looking forward to having you as part of our family, Leo," Maes said, his voice genuine and welcoming. "We may have an unusual background, but we're just a regular family at heart."
The introduction helped ease some of Leo's initial apprehension, showcasing the diverse experiences and backgrounds that made up his new family.
Cross then turned his attention to Lilia. "And this beautiful woman is Lilia Hughes, maiden name Lilia Forger, also known as the Thorn Princess," he introduced, noticing Leo's puzzled expression.
"Why the Thorn Princess?" Leo asked, intrigued.
Cross chuckled. "Her favorite weapons are hairpins. She's quite similar to you, Leo. She became a highly skilled assassin at the age of 13 and was trained by a former fraternity assassin. So her abilities are very much in line with what we're familiar with."
"Really, that's interesting," Leo remarked, clearly fascinated by the connection.
"If you doubt me, Leo, you're welcome to try~," Lilia teased, taking a playful stance, her eyes twinkling with challenge.
Leo, his curiosity piqued, mirrored her stance, ready to engage.
"We should probably back up," Cross advised, stepping back with a knowing smile.
"Yeah, no need to tell me twice," Maes agreed, moving aside with Cross, watching the playful exchange unfold with amused anticipation.
This lighthearted sparring offered Leo a glimpse into the dynamic and spirited nature of his new family, revealing a shared passion for skill and camaraderie.
It was a moment that underscored the blend of discipline and warmth that defined the Hughes, making Leo feel even more at home.
As Leo and Lilia sparred, their movements were so fast that to Maes, they appeared as little more than blurs.
"Their movements are like some kind of special effects, but in real life... Can you see what's going on, Dario?" Maes asked, his eyes struggling to keep up.
"Of course I can," Cross replied, clearly impressed. "But I'm surprised she's actually beating Leo here."
"How can you tell?" Maes inquired, curious about the details.
"They're using a point system, pulling their attacks just before contact, essentially only touching each other. Leo has managed to touch Lilia 25 times, but she's touched him 55 times. Nobody has pushed Leo this much before," Cross explained, his tone carrying both surprise and admiration.
Meanwhile, in the midst of the spar, Leo's mind raced. "I'm actually losing... This is crazy. She's stronger than everyone else at the fraternity... The only person I've ever lost to was Cross himself," he thought, his competitive spirit ignited.
In a swift move, Lilia tripped Leo, but he quickly recovered, balancing himself with one hand on the ground.
As he attempted to retaliate with a kick, Lilia deftly countered, gently tapping his cheek with her foot.
"Guess I won, huh~? That was fun, Leo," she said playfully, her demeanor light and cheerful.
Leo sighed, bouncing back to his feet with a small smile. "Yeah... I lost this one."
The sparring session ended with laughter and a newfound respect for each other's skills.
Leo observed the Hughes family closely, beginning with Lilia. She was undeniably beautiful and graceful, with a striking presence.
Her long, straight black hair cascaded down to her mid-back, with short bangs framing her forehead.
Her upturned red eyes added a unique intensity to her appearance.
Despite her slender, curvaceous frame, Leo knew firsthand that she possessed incredible strength and skill.
"She doesn't look all that strong, but there's no doubt she's had the same training as us. If this had been a real fight, I would've lost pretty badly, at least in a fair fight," Leo mused internally.
Turning his gaze to Maes, Leo noted his handsome features: short blond ruffled hair, blue eyes, and light skin.
Maes's hair was often slicked back, lending him a polished look, while his narrow, sharp eyes conveyed a sense of focus and determination.
He was tall, with a slim yet athletic build, marked by a few scars from his time in the military.
"Maes is quite the intimidating guy, at least by his looks. As a soldier, especially one with Delta Force experience, he must have undergone amazing training and mastered a variety of weapons," Leo thought, appreciating the depth of experience both his foster parents brought to the table.
Leo felt a sense of respect and admiration for both Lilia and Maes, recognizing the unique blend of skills and experiences they each possessed.
It was clear that he was stepping into a family where strength, discipline, and love were intertwined, promising an exciting and supportive new chapter in his life.
"So Leo, what do you think?" Cross asked, eager to hear Leo's thoughts on the Hughes.
This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.
Leo looked at both Lilia and Maes, feeling a warmth and connection that he hadn't expected.
With one of his rare, genuine smiles, he replied, "I'll be happy to be your son, Mr. and Mrs. Hughes."
Lilia's face lit up with joy, and she let out an excited squeal before rushing over to scoop Leo up in a hug. "Yay! Thank you for giving us the opportunity to be your parents, Leo! You won't regret it!" she exclaimed, her smile stretching from ear to ear.
Leo was taken aback by her strength, despite appearing to weigh around 130 pounds, his dense muscles and bones actually made him about three times that.
Yet Lilia held him with ease, a testament to her own strength.
Maes approached, placing a steady, reassuring hand on Leo's shoulder. "Welcome to the family... son," he said warmly.
In that moment, Leo felt a sense of belonging and acceptance.
Surrounded by the Hughes' warmth and genuine affection, he knew he was stepping into a new chapter filled with love, support, and endless possibilities.
Cross meticulously ensured that all the necessary legal paperwork was completed, forging Leo's documents to reflect a history in the system since infancy.
After handing the paperwork to the Hughes, Cross knelt to meet Leo's gaze.
"Well... everything is done. You're basically a normal kid now, in the eyes of everyone else. How does it feel, Leo?" Cross asked, his voice gentle.
Leo looked thoughtful, uncertainty flickering in his eyes. "I don't know... I've never been anything other than an assassin. That's all I know," he admitted, grappling with the change.
Cross placed a reassuring hand on Leo's shoulder. "Leo, you are who you are. You've always had the choice to be who you want to be. Just like we protect the world's right to choose, we do the same for you,"
Cross said, offering wisdom and support. He smiled, continuing, "Fraternitas et amor, non debilitas sed fortitudo."
Leo's lips curled into a small smile as he responded, "Non nobis aut avaritia certamus, sed amore."
Cross pulled him into a heartfelt hug. "I never did hug you, huh?" he asked, a touch of regret in his voice.
"No... you never did," Leo replied, instinctively wrapping his arms around Cross.
The embrace was a moment of connection and understanding, symbolizing the shift from Leo's past to his new beginning.
It was a promise that, despite the changes, he would always have support and love guiding him forward.
Cross, feeling tears welling up, released Leo from the hug and walked back to his car.
"Remember, Leo. If you ever need anything, don't hesitate to call. I'm always here for you," he said, his voice steady but tinged with emotion.
Leo nodded, walking with the Hughes to their car.
As Leo settled into Hughes' car, he turned back to give Cross one last wave.
The realization that his life was taking a significant turn weighed on him.
Cross watched the taillights fade, murmuring to himself, "That's the second time I've let one of my children go. Hurts like a bitch still.
During the quiet drive, Leo was lost in thought. He had never consciously felt sadness before, not even when leaving the fraternity.
The fraternity had been his family and home, and now he was leaving it behind for a life that felt alien—a life with school, friends, and a family not bound by the code of the chosen ones.
Maes and Lilia noticed Leo's contemplative silence. Lilia, in particular, felt a tug at her heart, understanding the feeling of not fitting in from her experiences with her younger sister with autism.
Gently, she reached out to hold Leo's hand. "Leo, it's okay to feel sad," she said softly. "Change is hard, but you're not alone. We're here for you every step of the way."
Leo looked at her, holding her hand gently. Internally, he wondered, "Can I even uphold this 'normal' life? I'm like a bat trying to fly in the daylight, not a bird."
Maes, sensing the need to lighten the mood, chimed in with a grin. "Well, Leo, you're about to become a ninja in the most unexpected place—middle school. Think of it as the ultimate undercover mission."
Leo considered this, "Think of it as a mission? I think I can do that."
Maes chuckled, "Good. That's the spirit. Now, let's get you home and settled."
Lilia whispered to Maes, "You should probably let him know it's metaphorical, not literal, honey." Maes looked puzzled. "What do you mean?" he whispered back.
"Because he has Asperger's, he might think you're serious about the ninja mission," Lilia said with affectionate amusement.
Realizing his mistake, Maes chuckled nervously and leaned back. "Leo, I was just kidding about the ninja part," he clarified.
Leo, having overheard, replied calmly, "I know, I heard the entire conversation. I understood."
Maes and Lilia exchanged a surprised look, their eyes crinkling with astonishment. "How did you...?" Lilia began, but Leo cut her off with a smile. "I have excellent hearing," he said simply.
"Even with the radio on? How's that possible?" Maes asked, impressed.
Leo shrugged, nonchalant. "It's part of the package," he said, referring to his Asperger's.
Lilia laughed, patting Leo on the back. "Well, we won't be whispering near you again. You'll ruin any surprises!"
Their laughter filled the car, lightening the mood and marking the beginning of Leo's integration into a new family, one that was ready to embrace him and all the unique aspects of who he was.
As they settled into the house, Leo took in the inviting surroundings with its white and gold decor, a comfortable kitchen, and a spacious living room.
Lilia's welcoming smile made the transition feel a bit easier. "Welcome to your new home, Leo. I hope you'll enjoy it here," she said warmly.
"I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it here. Do you mind if I meet my new sister?" Leo asked, curious about the family dynamics.
Maes called up the stairs, "Eris! Come down and meet your new brother!"
Eris soon appeared at the top of the stairs, descending with an air of confidence.
Her long, heterochromic hair—black from her mother and blonde from her father—framed her face, highlighting her piercing blue eyes. Her appearance was striking and well-suited for her age.
At 12, Eris had a reputation for being contemptuous and impulsive, often showing defiance and a condescending attitude.
Her short temper and propensity for outbursts were traits likely inherited from someone in her family but definitely not from Maes or Lilia.
As she reached the bottom of the stairs, Eris fixed Leo with a scrutinizing gaze.
"So, you're the new brother," she said, her tone a mix of curiosity and challenge.
Leo met her gaze calmly, aware of her temperament but unfazed. "Yeah, that's me. Nice to meet you, Eris."
Eris's expression softened slightly as she took in his calm demeanor, though she maintained her guarded posture.
Eris towered over Leo, standing at 5'6", a good two inches taller than him.
With her parents' heights—Lilia at 5'7" and Maes at 6'0"—she was likely to grow even taller.
Her piercing blue eyes scanned Leo with a mix of curiosity and skepticism, taking in his shorter stature.
Geez, guess I'm the shortest in the family, huh? Typical, guess my parents weren't very tall, Leo mused silently, a flicker of disappointment crossing his mind.
"He's pretty short for a boy, why did you pick him out of all of them?" she questioned, her tone sharp.
"Eris, don't be rude to Leo," Lilia gently chastised, stepping forward. "He's still young, just like you. He'll grow taller."
Leo opened his mouth to speak, "Mrs. Hughes has a point, I would like to have just a little bit of resp—" but was abruptly silenced by a slap from Eris.
Though it didn't hurt, the act left him feeling disrespected.
"Eris! What's your problem, girl?" Maes's voice rose, tinged with frustration.
"He spoke out of line, Dad! He's the one who was disrespectful!" Eris retorted, her voice climbing in pitch.
"Who are you raising your voice at?" Maes countered, his authority clear.
Leo, however, raised a calming hand, signaling them to pause.
"It's okay. I think I can handle it. May I try?" he asked, his voice steady and polite.
Maes and Lilia exchanged a glance before nodding their assent.
Leo approached Eris, his demeanor composed. "You know, going around slapping people who speak out of turn is very disrespectful and illegal," he said calmly.
"Oh really? What do you know? I'm a year older than you, so I know more than you," Eris shot back defiantly, crossing her arms.
*Are normal children usually this ignorant? Guess I'm just more mature for my age, apparently,* Leo thought, feeling a mix of amusement and exasperation.
"Well, I'm not going to waste my breath trying to talk to you in big words that you obviously don't understand," he stated, his tone matter-of-fact.
"Are you calling me dumb!?" Eris exclaimed, her temper flaring.
"No," Leo replied coolly, "I'm saying that your brain is not as well developed as mine to keep up in a mature conversation, that your mind can't possibly understand."
Eris's confusion was palpable, her cheeks flushing with a mix of embarrassment and anger.
Lilia and Maes couldn't suppress their giggles, further fueling their daughter's indignation.
"Why... you little!" she spat, attempting another slap, but Leo deftly blocked her and pinched her cheek.
"Ow!" she cried, eyes wide with surprise.
"Not so nice, is it?" Leo remarked, his tone even.
Eris, now in a blind rage, lunged at Leo, fists swinging.
But Leo moved with ease, dodging her attacks and pinching her in return.
She's actually not that bad. With some proper training, she'd be pretty good. She's definitely Lilia's daughter, he thought, admiring her spirit even as he countered her blows.
Eventually, Eris was covered in small red marks from Leo's pinches, her frustration mounting as she fought back tears. "You give up, Eris?" Leo asked gently.
Defeated, Eris stomped up the stairs, her voice echoing through the house. "Stupid Leo!!" she yelled, slamming her door shut.
As the household settled into a tentative calm, Lilia and Maes exchanged looks of both amusement and concern.
They knew the path to sibling harmony would be challenging, but it was a journey they were ready to undertake together, confident that Leo's presence would ultimately enrich their family.
"Was I too rough on her?" Leo asked, a hint of concern in his voice.
Lilia shook her head, offering a reassuring smile. "No, I don't think you were. Thanks for showing lots of restraint. You were hands-on with her but not overdoing it."
"Yeah, sorry about that, Leo," Maes added, a touch of embarrassment coloring his tone.
"She gets her attitude from my side of the family. My dad, Sauros—guess that trait skipped my generation."
Leo considered this, his expression thoughtful. "I guess I should feel sorry for the kids at school?" he asked, probing further into the family dynamics.
Lilia and Maes exchanged worried glances, their expressions speaking volumes.
"Well, she got suspended from school a lot," Lilia admitted, her voice tinged with sadness. "Her hot-headed nature and... inheriting my strength make for a bad combination in a school setting."
"The principal said that if she gets into one more fight, she'll be expelled," Maes added, frustration and a hint of desperation evident in his voice. "We've tried talking to her, but as you saw, it's not really effective. We've even tried getting her some help, but she won't open up."
Leo paused, deep in thought. Okay, Eris... she seems off. If this personality is actually inherited, then there's no way Sauros was always this aggressive... So Eris might be putting up a tough front to hide her hurt. That makes sense, or could she just be a rebellious kid, he mused, pacing back and forth.
Lilia watched Leo with intrigue, her eyes lighting up. "Ohh! He's processing! Cross told us about this!" she exclaimed excitedly.
"When Leo's mind starts thinking very rapidly?" Maes asked, curious.
"Yes! When he processes information at a rapid speed! One minute to us is like an hour in his head. He could have thought about at least 10 or 20 things by now," she said happily.
Leo's mind raced through various scenarios and possibilities. Eris may feel a sense of responsibility to protect her parents from worry or disappointment. She could feel ashamed or embarrassed about being bullied, especially if she believes she should be able to handle the situation herself, he thought, piecing together the puzzle.
After a minute and ten seconds, Leo stopped pacing, clarity dawning on his face. "She's being bullied," he said aloud, the realization settling heavily in the room.
The room fell silent as the weight of Leo’s words sank in. Lilia and Maes exchanged shocked glances, their disbelief evident.
"Bullying?" they echoed in unison, trying to process the revelation.
"Correct. That's what I have concluded," Leo stated, his voice steady with certainty.
Maes chuckled lightly, a hint of denial creeping into his tone. "I know kids can be mean, but bullying a pretty girl like Eris is dumb," he said, shaking his head.
Leo leaned back on the couch, his expression contemplative. "That might have been the case back when you were growing up, Mr. Hughes... but this is 2012, Gen Z. I may not be a normal child due to my circumstances, but by talking with Eris, I can conclude that children can be cruel and very ignorant. Matter of fact..."
He paused, gathering his thoughts before continuing. "I have a few hypotheses that can support my claim."
Lilia and Maes settled on either side of Leo, eager to hear his reasoning.
Leo’s analytical mind had become a source of fascination and hope for them. "It's pretty simple, really," Leo began. "She’s getting bullied because of her hair. Heterochromia is rare, and humans being humans, we don’t like anything different from our norms. So, we discriminate against it."
"But why wouldn’t she just tell us about being bullied or about her beautiful hair?" Lilia asked, her voice tinged with concern.
Leo considered this, understanding the complexity of Eris's situation. "Well, I don't know personally, but the most common reasons I can remember are, A, embarrassment; she might feel ashamed or embarrassed about being bullied, especially if she believes she should be able to handle the situation herself, meaning she's constantly fighting to solve it. And, B, fear of disappointing you two; some children may feel a sense of responsibility to protect their parents from worry or disappointment. And not only that, you’ve just adopted a child into the family, which means she might feel like she’s failing in your eyes and fears being replaced."
Lilia and Maes absorbed his insights, each point hitting home with the ring of truth.
They exchanged a look of realization, understanding that they needed to approach the situation with empathy and care.
Leo’s perspective had opened a new path for addressing Eris’s struggles, and they knew it was crucial to support her in overcoming these challenges.
Maes rose from the couch with determination. "I think I should talk to her," he said, heading towards Eris's room.
However, Lilia gently stopped him, her expression thoughtful.
"Actually, I think Leo should talk to her," she suggested, surprising both Maes and Leo.
Maes turned to her, puzzled. "Think about it," Lilia continued. "She hasn't opened up to us in months. Leo is around her age, and she might not open up to us just because Leo told us."
Leo hesitated, recalling Eris's earlier aggression. "But she literally tried to smash my face in. Do you really think this is ideal?" he asked, with uncertainty in his voice.
"Trust me, Leo," Lilia said with confidence. "My mother's intuition tells me that you'll have this in the bag."
Maes placed a reassuring hand on Leo's shoulder. "Just try your best, Leo. You've already given us useful information to go on. We'll try again if it doesn't work," he said, his tone supportive.
Lilia shot Maes a playful pout. "You're planning on my failure, Maes?"
Maes rolled his eyes with affection and pulled her into a hug. "I'm a soldier, remember? I always have to make a contingency plan. You know I have faith in you, babe~," he said, kissing her softly.
"I know, honey~," she replied, returning the kiss.
Leo stood by, observing the exchange with a blank expression that seemed to say, Really, guys?
His presence brought them back to reality, and they pulled away, slightly embarrassed.
"I'm just going to get going..." Leo said, excusing himself as he headed up the stairs.
He felt a mix of apprehension and determination, ready to approach Eris with the hope of understanding and perhaps bridging the gap that had formed between her and her family.
As he ascended, the soft creak of the wooden steps echoed the quiet resolve settling in his chest.
He knew this conversation could be pivotal, not just for Eris but for the entire family dynamic.
"So... Eris, you're not actually mad at me, huh?" Leo asked gently, trying to catch her gaze. "You feel like I'm going to replace you, like the spotlight of their love would be taken away?"
Eris looked at him, her eyes still glistening with unshed tears.
His question seemed to hit a nerve, and she hesitated, her fingers fidgeting with the edge of her pillow.
"Maybe," she admitted quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's just... ever since you came, it feels like they've been more excited about you. Like I'm not enough anymore.”
Leo nodded, understanding her fear. "I get it," he said softly. "It must be hard to feel like you're being sidelined. But, Eris, I don't want to take anything away from you. I just want to be part of the family, too."
She looked at him, a flicker of hope mingling with doubt. "But what if there's not enough room for both of us?"
"I think there's plenty of room," Leo replied. "Love isn't like a pie. It doesn't get smaller with more people. It grows. I bet your parents have more than enough love for both of us."
Eris listened, her defenses slowly lowering. "You really think so?" she asked, her voice tinged with vulnerability.
"I really do," Leo assured her. "And I’m here to help, not replace. Maybe we could team up, make things better together?"
Her lips twitched into a small, tentative smile. "Maybe," she conceded, her heart opening just a little to the possibility of change and acceptance.
"I always believe that you shouldn't let those kids get to you," Leo said softly, "and that includes beating them up."
Eris huffed, her frustration bubbling over. "They deserve it! They keep making fun of my hair," she said, rubbing her fingers through her unique locks. "It's not my fault I have heterochromia hair. I didn't ask to be born this way, being a freak of nature."
Leo could sense the deep insecurity in her voice, her words laced with pain and self-doubt.
Gently, he reached out and took a strand of her hair, surprising her with his boldness.
"H-hey!? What are you doing, Leo?" she exclaimed, her tone defensive.
Ignoring her initial protest, Leo examined her hair with care. "This is a very rare condition," he said, picking up a brush and beginning to gently smooth her hair. "Heterochromia in the hair is rare, and only a few cases have been reported. It means having two distinct colors of hair, which can be due to inherited factors, genetic mosaicism, chimerism, or other causes. I'm guessing you were born with it, right?”
Eris nodded, her eyes closing as she relaxed under the rhythmic strokes of the brush.
I don't know why, but this is making me feel very calm, she thought, surrendering to the soothing motion.
"I'm the one who's jealous of you, Eris," Leo admitted, his voice filled with sincerity. "I don't even know my blood parents. I've been in the system for so long, wondering if my own parents ever loved me. I didn't even have a first or last name when I was born. My caretaker, Cross, gave me my name."
Eris opened her eyes, listening intently as Leo shared a piece of his heart with her.
His vulnerability was unexpected, yet somehow comforting.
"But I have to say," Leo continued, "when I see your hair, I see the kindness and beauty of your mom on the left and the strength and toughness of your dad. Your hair doesn't make you a freak to me, Eris; it highlights your best traits visually. If you value my opinion, anyway?"
His words made Eris's heart race, a warmth spreading through her chest.
Flustered by the unexpected compliment and the emotions it stirred, she impulsively pushed Leo off the bed, sending him tumbling to the floor.
Though he could have caught himself, Leo allowed the fall, understanding she needed to express her feelings in her own way.
"What was that for?" Leo asked, looking up at her with a mix of amusement and curiosity.
Eris, cheeks flushed and eyes wide, was momentarily speechless.
"I-I don't know," she stammered, the rush of emotions catching her off guard.
But deep down, she knew Leo's words had touched her more than she was ready to admit.
Leo just sighed, brushing off the moment with a gentle grace, and stood up, extending his hand towards Eris with one of his rare, warm smiles. "So, how about you get up and tell your mom and dad about those bullies who've been bothering you? I'm pretty sure they can offer you some reassurance that I know you need."
Eris felt her cheeks flush even harder, taken aback by how handsome he looked when he smiled.
Oh crap... he's so handsome when he smiles... she thought, momentarily caught off guard.
But quickly, she reverted to her familiar tsundere demeanor, swatting his hand away and standing up on her own.
"Please, I don't need your help getting up! I can do that myself!" she declared, getting right in his face with a playful defiance.
"And FYI," she continued, poking his nose for emphasis, "my mom and dad are your mom and dad now too! From now on, you will call them mom and dad around me, got it?" she demanded, her tone both commanding and affectionate.
Leo noticed the sudden shift in her personality, from vulnerable to defiant, but he wasn’t complaining.
It was a good sign. "Sure thing, I'll do that from now on," he replied, his voice steady and reassuring.
"Good!" she said, brushing past him with a renewed sense of determination.
She stopped at the door, hesitating for a brief moment before turning back to him, her expression softening.
"Thanks..." she said softly, the word filled with gratitude and a hint of newfound connection.
Leo nodded, watching her go, a sense of accomplishment settling within him.
He knew that this was just the beginning of their journey together as a family, and he felt ready to embrace whatever challenges and joys lay ahead.
A few hours later, the dining room was filled with laughter and an atmosphere of warmth.
Lilia and Maes exchanged smiles, relieved and delighted to see Eris happier than she had been in a long time.
Her mood seemed lighter, and she engaged in conversation with a newfound ease, the tension of earlier seemingly forgotten.
After dinner, Leo found himself in the backyard, perched high in a tree, gazing at the stars.
The cool night air and the twinkling sky offered him a sense of peace and familiarity.
"Enjoying the view up there, Leo?" Lilia called from below, noticing him nestled among the branches.
Leo looked down and nodded. "It reminds me of the fraternity where we used to train and sleep in trees," he said, a hint of nostalgia in his voice.
"Mind if I join you up there?" she asked, a playful challenge in her tone.
He nodded, and with surprising agility, Lilia made her way up the tree, using her skills to join him with ease.
As she settled next to him, Leo was impressed. "You trained like this too?" he asked, curious about her background.
"Just slightly," she admitted with a smile. "Nowhere near as dangerous as the training you did, though."
They both sat quietly for a moment, the stars above them casting a gentle glow.
"You know," Lilia began, breaking the silence, "I was really worried about Eris. Seeing her happy like this means the world to us."
Leo nodded, understanding the depth of her concern. "She's a strong kid," he replied. "Just needed someone to remind her of that.”
Lilia smiled warmly, grateful for his presence in their lives. "You know, you're part of this family now. We're really glad you’re here, Leo."
Leo felt a warmth spread through him, touched by her words. "I'm glad to be here too," he said, feeling the truth of it settle in his heart.
As they continued to sit together, watching the stars, there was a comforting sense of belonging and hope for the future shared between them.
Lilia wrapped her arm around Leo, offering a gesture of warmth and solidarity as they sat together in the tree.
"I heard about how you took down El Chapo a year ago," she said, her voice gentle but filled with curiosity. "You're the youngest person to make such a big impression in the underworld. Taking down the world's most dangerous drug lord is very impressive. Why did you do it? It's not like the fraternity needs that kind of money."
Leo paused, the memories flickering in his mind like shadows.
He took a deep breath, steadying himself before speaking. "I wanted revenge," he admitted, his voice calm but carrying the weight of past pain. "His men beat and raped a person I cared about, and I got it. It's just that simple. Everything else was a plus."
Lilia listened, sensing the depth of emotion beneath his words.
She nodded, understanding that some actions are driven by deeply personal motives, beyond the reach of logic or reason.
"I'm sorry you had to go through that," she said softly, her arm tightening around him in a comforting squeeze.
Leo appreciated her empathy, finding solace in her presence. "It's in the past now, but it changed a lot for me," he said, looking up at the stars. "Made me realize what really matters."
They sat together, enveloped in the quiet night, sharing a moment of silent reflection.
Leo pulled out the St. Jude's medallion from around his neck, a symbol that had been with him through thick and thin, and gazed at it thoughtfully.
The medallion was a tangible link to Inés, someone who meant a great deal to him.
"That day made me question a lot of things," he said, his voice tinged with introspection. "My intentions and my humanity... I killed a lot of men in those 30 hours, and I didn't feel a thing for taking a life. I don't see dreams when I sleep, and it's hard finding my heart."
He looked at the necklace one more time before tucking it back beneath his shirt, his hand settling over his chest.
"I have a heart... but do I really have a heart? Sometimes it feels like there's a hole in my chest," he admitted, the vulnerability in his voice revealing the turmoil within.
Lilia listened quietly, her heart aching for him. She understood that carrying such a burden could take a toll on one's soul, creating scars that were not easily healed.
"Leo," she began softly, "what you've been through would change anyone. But the fact that you're questioning these things, that you care enough to wonder about your humanity, shows that your heart is still very much alive."
She paused, choosing her words carefully. "Healing takes time, and it's okay to feel lost sometimes. But you're not alone, and you don't have to face it by yourself. We're here for you."
Her words hung in the air, a promise of support and understanding.
Leo nodded, grateful for her compassion. "Thanks, Lilia," he said quietly, feeling a little less alone in his struggles.
As they sat together under the vast night sky, Leo allowed himself to hope that maybe, just maybe, he could find a way to mend the hole in his heart.
"You think it's too early for me to say 'I love you?'" Lilia asked, her voice tinged with a mix of vulnerability and cautious hope.
She was aware of the depth such words carried and didn't want to overwhelm him.
Leo looked at her, genuinely surprised by her admission. Love? he thought to himself, a concept both familiar and foreign.
While he understood love in theory and knew that his fraternity friends cared about him, the word itself—laden with emotion and expectation—was something he had never personally experienced or known how to express.
"Well, it's only been one day since I got here," Leo replied thoughtfully, trying to process the intensity of her feelings. "So most people could consider it a bit strong."
He paused, meeting her gaze with honesty. "But I'm not against it," he continued. "Though I don't know if I can reciprocate those feelings back... not yet."
Lilia nodded, understanding his hesitation.
She appreciated his honesty and was willing to give him the space he needed to navigate his emotions.
"That's okay," she said softly, a gentle smile on her lips. "I just wanted you to know how much you mean to us already. There's no rush, Leo. Just be yourself, and everything else will fall into place."
Her reassurance offered Leo a sense of relief, and he appreciated her patience and understanding.
As they sat side by side, the night around them serene and filled with possibilities, Leo felt a small spark of hope that perhaps, in time, he could come to understand and embrace the love that was being offered to him.
Maes watched from the window, a satisfied smile stretching across his face as he observed Leo and Lilia getting along.
He sipped his beer, chuckling to himself. "Yeah... I think Leo is going to be just fine," he thought. "At least we know our house will be safe with three dangerous people instead of two."
Later, Maes led Leo to his new room. "Well, I hope you enjoy your room, Leo. You'll be staying in it from now on. I have a feeling that it's very homie," Maes said, grinning.
Leo opened the door, and his eyes widened in disbelief.
The room looked just like his old one at the fraternity—his weights, custom punching bag, even the comic book posters Vagan had given him adorned the walls.
It was as if he had never left. "But... I left most of this stuff at the fraternity," Leo said in amazement. "All I brought were my clothes, shoes, toothbrush, and essentials. How did you get it all in here?"
Maes chuckled, a hint of pride in his voice. "Oh, we were expecting you. While we were having a little fun before bringing you home, we snuck all your stuff in here and set it up just like your old room."
Leo was touched but curious. "You were expecting me the whole time..." he realized.
Maes nodded. "Yeah, pretty much. Cross and I have been talking about it for a while. I even watched you train. You were amazing. Cross felt that the environment wasn't ideal for you to grow—physically, yes, but not as a person."
Maes led Leo into the closet, revealing a secret panel.
After entering a code, a hidden door opened to a walk-in armory filled with all of Leo's weapons and some he hadn't seen before.
"No way... You got all of this here at short notice?" Leo marveled.
Maes nodded again. "We wanted a child who could understand us. Eris couldn't possibly grasp how dark and dangerous the real world can be, but you have, and you came back stronger."
"But why me, out of all the children? There were others more ideal," Leo questioned.
"Because, Leo," Maes said, pointing at Leo's heart, "you might not feel or think like everyone else, and your face might seem emotionless most of the time, but deep down, whether you know it or not, you have the biggest heart I've ever seen. You may brush it off as logical, and maybe it is, but deep down, I know there's a person who cares a whole lot."
Leo stood there, absorbing Maes's words. For the first time, he began to see himself through the eyes of someone who truly believed in him, offering him a sense of belonging and acceptance he hadn't realized he needed.
A year had passed since Leo moved in with the Hughes, and both he and Eris had experienced significant growth.
Leo, now standing at 5'11", was pleased with his sudden growth spurt, no longer feeling as short as he did at twelve.
The changes in his life had not only been physical but also emotional, as he found himself more at ease with his new family and environment.
Eris, too, had blossomed into a stunning teenager. At 14, she had caught up with her voluptuous mother Lilia in terms of curves.
While she was growing into her own,Eris felt self-conscious about her more developed breasts compared to other girls her age.
The attention from boys, often unwelcome, sometimes resulted in teasing and nicknames like "Cow tits," which frustrated her greatly.
Whenever the teasing got to her, Eris's instinct was to retaliate, often with her fists.
However, having Leo at the same school was a blessing.
He was always there to calm her down, his presence a steady anchor that helped her manage the tumultuous emotions that came with adolescence.
"Eris, you know you don't have to listen to them, right?" Leo would say, his voice calm and reassuring as he walked alongside her. "You're amazing just the way you are, and you don't need to prove anything to those idiots."
Eris appreciated his support, even if she didn't always show it outwardly.
"Yeah, I know," she'd reply, trying to shrug it off, though Leo's words always helped soothe her temper.
Their bond had grown stronger over the year, and Leo had become more than just a protective presence; he was a confidant and a brother figure she could always rely on.
As they navigated the challenges of growing up, they did so with the knowledge that they had each other's backs, no matter what.
Over the year, Eris found herself grappling with unexpected emotions.
Despite knowing it wasn't the norm to develop feelings for her foster brother, she couldn't help the way she felt about Leo.
He was the only person her age who treated her with genuine respect and kindness—qualities that stood out to her amid the chaos of adolescence.
Leo was always there for her, helping with homework, standing up to bullies, and boosting her self-esteem at every turn.
He was a constant source of support and comfort, making it hard for Eris not to feel something deeper.
However, whenever she got too flustered around him, her tsundere nature would kick in, and she'd resort to physical expressions like punching or pushing him.
It was her way of coping with her feelings, though it often left her feeling frustrated with herself.
"Aww! Damn it, I did it again! What the hell is wrong with me!?" she'd think, annoyed at her inability to express herself more openly.
Leo, on the other hand, didn't mind her antics.
He understood that this was just Eris's unique way of showing affection, and he took it in stride, often with a smile or a gentle laugh.
"You pack quite a punch, Eris," he'd tease lightly, rubbing his arm where she'd hit him.
Her actions, though sometimes rough, were endearing to him.
He appreciated her for who she was, quirks and all.
As they navigated their feelings and the complexities of growing up together, Leo and Eris maintained a bond that was both strong and uniquely theirs, built on a foundation of mutual respect and unspoken understanding.
