The Council of the Thousand

The Council of the Thousand

The council of the thousand, also called the council of the people. is the most important branch of the Rüt (Root) Kingdom, when a national decision or law is passed within the root kingdom, except in a few edge cases, It has actually been passed by this council. This council addresses Fund management, murder of higher citizens not covered by the lower courts, the collection and distribution of taxes, and many diplomatic matters relevant to the running of such a large state.

“ ‘Exploring our Rüts’ by Reya Arkinsun”

Before the council stood a boy, a man 24 years of age. and yet more a boy than a man.

Dressed in my finest clothes. Clothes made of platinum and precious minerals, My formal armor made out of my platinum a small shell of comfort. Standing Infront of the menace that is the one-thousand.

I have been raised in politics, shaped by it. So why am I distressed?

“Pale Bānčär, you have been summoned upon the council today for an important message”

The words echoed through my head. I never expected that I would be on the receiving end of one of these orders.

“I the councilor Parvor Crœl now will send you on a mission, a mission of the highest importance.”

So they were sending me away. I do not doubt the importance of this mission, simply my place in it. Such a blatant push to remove me from the political sphere.

The counselor reached under his stand, and with great effort removed a large box placing it before the council.

“This box shall be delivered as instructed to the central commuun before two years time has passed. As an important member of the Bānčär family I would like you to handle the case, do you have any questions?”

“No councilor, you are perfectly understood.”

the Councilor turned around to the crowd “I will abstain from the vote so for matter there will be an odd number of votes. Are there any objections from the council?”

A minute passed and not one person raised his voice.

And that’s it. the end of my political career, my life as the member of the mighty Bānčär family. By the time I am back the places in the council will be filled, and my family will be down a member.

If no one shall speak now the decision…

“I Councilor Reagian Bānčär speaking, do indeed object, I do not see a viable reason to send this fine gentleman-” there was a quick stop as the councilor looked around and noticed something,

“I retract my objection.”

“You can't do that! its…” I shook my head profusely, still struggling to believe this was happening “I am the most promising politician, how could you tell him to stop. its…” I sighed, I tried to clean my head. a task seemingly impossible, my mom which i was following was not reacting back. probably because she realized the big mistake she made. as the head of the Bānčär family she probably feels ashamed. “I deserve an answer, what was that all about?” I asked, waving my hand behind us, it was frustrating.

My mother didn't react, it felt as if she wanted to infuriate me, but I said what I had to say. I kept my quiet waiting for her reaction, I followed her out of the court building leaving with her to her cart. I didn't get kicked so i assumed she wants me there, we continued our way in silence

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

We reached the Bānčär castle, Humility* Davis opened up the door for my mother I followed right behind. When we reached mothers room on the third floor, my mother finally looked at me, “Yes Pale, what is it?”

What is it? she can not be serious! “Oh Mother Dearest!” I announced sardonically, “We have been planning this for the last 3 and a half years, I have earned this place, I have proven my worth for years. Why in the Emperor’s holy name did you leave me out to dry like that!”

Mother waited until I regained my composure before she responded “As it is written on the front door ‘for my descendants are to be humbled seeing what I have accomplished.’ ” She paused waiting for me to take a breath.

“If you can't fathom why I did what I did, you do not deserve an answer. Greater opportunities presented themselves and the costs of not taking them were too great.”

“There are seats to be filled.” I mumbled.

“And they will be.” She responded with finality to her words.

That… Was not what I expected. I wasn't in the most familial mood as I walked towards the balcony, Hoping this was just some sort of cruel joke. Why would they raise me so high, to have the object of my desires, the role I had been preparing for my entire life, removed as a possibility.

Sending me instead to the barbaric Commuun area. It is not such a terrible future, but I would be losing the most important era of my life delivering a stupid box. Never again, to come to the same role as before.

I looked over the city. The roofs sprinkled with white, sprinkled on top were cleaners rushing to get their work down before the sun crested too high. I could see Elleclyn resting on top of the mountain, as glorious as ever, the cold affecting it and the light reflecting off of it causing it to resemble an obsidian sculpture more than a tree. Seeing the light of the lanterns hung around the reflective surface of the Firgen-tree calmed me. The familiar sight. It is home, here is where I am safe. Even with everything changing Elleclyn remained and it would await my return.

This gave me the time to think; my thoughts were sporaliking. Mother, she agreed to this, let it happen to further family goals. Should I keep pushing? I could pull in favors, maybe I could still get back on track?

But… that would be a betrayal of my family or my mother. And I would not be here without them.

I noticed a note, somewhat hidden on the balcony,

“Your hair as black like the night sky, your eyes an aquamarine ocean with the way they move, I could get lost in those patterns.” I stopped reading as my sister walked onto the balcony, I held my poker face as I handed her the note. “This is for you.”

“Thanks”, she answered and took the note from my hand, she sat down. and ripped the note into pieces, “so, it seems they got you.”

I sighed, “yes, for the family.” I punctuated that statement with a moment of silence, ”What about that amazing love letter someone left for you. Who is the unlucky one this time?”

“ArmÖnd KârsÖm, I met him today in the meeting. Not the most pleasant experience.” She threw the rest of the note off the balcony and headed to the house motioning for me to follow her.

I followed her into the house as she spoke, “I don't believe you let Mother make you go, since when do you back off things this fast? I still remember the four hour debate you had with Cklorck̃ about why our Firgen-tree is superior to theirs, and this was while just at a house party. and now when this happens,” she waved her hands in the air to impress upon me the magnitude of the situation, “you back out!” She took a deep breath.

“Well, there's nothing I can do. the council has decided. And there is literally no step I can possibly take to reverse their decision without ruining my chances anyway. Besides, this was mothers decision, I am only in this position due to family support, how long would that last without her.”

Rhea was visibly disappointed, “its, haaa. it just seems wrong that she would just let you go in that fashion, after working with you and helping you she would just give up?”

“you are assuming she gave up, she won this battle. There are seats to be filled and losing one isn't bad when the reward is another five.”

“Besides,” I continued, “I’m not giving up entirely. There's still a future I can build on this diplomatic mission and. I will milk it for all that it is worth.”

There is a hint of pity in her voice as she responds “I’m sure you will…”
