Setting the Scene

The Dwergan city of Bauesse, the capital of what was once the scattered Dwergan empire, was essentially a hollowed mountain supported by Dwergan engineering and a central pillar. From the outside it looked rather unassuming, a simple mountain peak nestled amongst others near the edge of the Iron Mountains. The city boasted one of the most intricate Dwergan architectures, designed by master craftsmen.

Etched walls followed the structure of the mountain, leaving a couple dozen feet of stone remaining. As the wall made its way down it curved back in on itself creating a kind of tiered donut shape that sloped up to a massive central pillar. Nestled in the valley ran a waterway, bridged at various places, that washed away the waste of the city. Lit by a large crystal set at the very top of the main pillar, like a keystone, the city was able to fabricate a day and night cycle.

Known for its dwarven population, precious gems, and ever active forges, Bauesse was a bustling trade center in the Alliance as well as home to the Dwergan Nobility who nestled at the base of the central pillar. However, the numerous prosperities of the city were mirrored by an innumerable number of poor who lived in the deepest part of the tiered valley. Among those who lived in the valley were the young homeless children that seemed to thrive, known to the general population as 'crags'.

Cassius had been the son of a prominent human family known for their exquisite forging abilities. His father had been one of the greatest artisans in the Alliance, rivaling the craftsmanship of the Dwergan, producing some of the finest weapons and armor. His mother was a fine jewler, and crafted beautiful pieces of art for the high class. Alas, a terrible fate befell his family.

A storage cart holding lumber, toppled from a higher tier, crashed through the roof of their forge-home. His father was crushed in a mere instant, his mother trapped beneath burning wood. Cassius, at the young age of six, watched as the charred visage of his mother reached out to caress him one last time. The home around the young boy was soon eaten away, blackened by the hungry flames.

The city guard found him unconscious, collapsed at the edge of the destruction and covered in soot. All that remained of Cassius's family were two charred bodies and a ruined home. He was taken into custody and housed for a short period as the guard looked for any next of kin, but none could be found. After three days at the guard station, he was released to an orphanage, and in accordance with Dwergaz law, stripped of his surname.

He stayed there for one week.
