Thomas’s first day began shortly. He wakes up at five thirty, takes a shower, and gets dressed.
Sofia had left at the same time as him to go to the gym.
"Don't forget, I'll pick you up at seven," she said.
Thomas nods his head and gives her a quick but deep kiss.
"I won't, I promise. See you later."
Thomas gets into his car and drives off to his first day.
When he arrives he is greeted by the receptionist.
“Hello, my name is Thomas Philip. I have my internship today.”
The receptionist smiled and pointed down the hall.
"They're expecting you. Here’s your pass and a lanyard.” the receptionist handed him a pass and a lanyard with the letters LDI and underneath read B8.
"Thank you," Thomas says.
Thomas walks down the hall and into an elevator. As he steps in he goes to press a button, but each one is listed B2, B3, B4, B5, and so on. This place must go underground for miles, he thought to himself. He pressed the B8 button and waited as the elevator went down. As he rides the elevator, Thomas inspects his badge. It says Thomas Philip, Intern.
"Intern," he says aloud to himself. "What kind of work will they have me doing?"
The doors to the elevator open and he is met by a short woman with blond hair and a white coat.
“Oh sorry am I in your way?” Thomas said as he bumped into the woman.
“A little bit.” She moves Thomas out of the way and steps into the elevator.
Thomas steps out of the elevator turns to her and speaks, “Sorry but where do I go? I’m the new intern and this is the farthest I figured out where to go. I have my badge right here. Do you think you can tell me where to go, ma'am?
The woman sighs and looks at him.
She points past him and down the hall. “You are to take a left, then another left, and there will be a room with the label engineering.
"Thank you," Thomas says. He turns to look back but the doors close and the woman is gone. Thomas follows her directions and ends where she guides him.
She was right.
The room was attached to the hallway but was see-through due to the glass window that stretched across the room. Thomas could see people inside working. He knocks on the door and enters.
"Hello, I'm the new intern. My name is Thomas Philip."
A man with black hair and a grey mustache approached him.
"Hello Thomas, my name is Harold. It's good to meet you."
"You too sir. How can I help you?
"Well, for now, I'd like you to follow me and I'll give you a tour."
Harold opens the door and begins walking.
"So Thomas, where are you from?"
"I'm from Florida," he replies.
"Ah, a Florida boy. It's beautiful there. I take my family to Disney every summer. How about you?"
"Not so much. Growing up in Florida doesn't make me want to go to Disney all the time. Me and my girlfriend do go to Halloween horror nights every year though."
"Halloween Horror Nights, huh?"
This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.
"Well, when you grew up around the theme parks, the novelty wears off after a while."
"That's fair. What did you study in school?"
"Well, I went to FSU and I majored in engineering and I dabbled in some history."
"History eh, what have you built that's history related?"
"Well, nothing really. But I do like learning about the past. I think that learning about the past and its mistakes helps us avoid those mistakes in the future."
"I agree. What kind of mistakes would you want to avoid?"
"Trying to study film at the beginning of my college career."
Harold laughs and leads Thomas down the hallway and through a set of double doors.
"We're here."
"Where are we?" Thomas asked.
"This is the engineer's room. It will be where you and I do most of our work."
Thomas looked around and saw a variety of tables, tools, and equipment.
"What are we going to be working on?"
"Now I was briefed on your resume that you previously built a battery that would run forever. We're gonna do the same but on a much larger scale. You'll be responsible for coming up with a design, making the prototype, and testing the prototype."
"I'd be happy to, but I don't have a master's degree or PhD."
"That's why as our intern, you will have full access to the tools available in this room. Courtesy of Limbo Distribution. What I want for you today is for you to create the blueprints for the project. You have unlimited creativity as that is something we value here at Limbo. You'll find the blueprint paper and markers on the left-hand side of the table. Any questions?
"None at all sir."
"Then get to work."
"Thank you, sir."
Thomas walked over to the table and began designing the blueprints. After a few hours, he was finished. Satisfied with his work, Thomas brings the blueprints to Harold.
"This is what I have for you, sir."
Harold takes the paper and looks at it.
"What is this?"
"It's a perpetual energy generator."
"I can see that. But how do you propose we make a perpetual energy generator real if it defies our laws of physics?"
"Well if we build the device in space we would be able to use the void of space as a perpetual motion device if we use a sphere or some object that could rotate at an incredible speed."
"I like it, but we have to use resources here on earth. It would be too expensive to move a product into space. Do you propose another idea?"
"How about using a spinning wheel attached to an alternator or a magnet? When the wheel spins it could create a charge and when the charge gets high enough it will power an alternator or magnet."
"Sounds good to me. Draw those blueprints out for me and then I'll bring them to my superiors," Harold says patting Thomas on the shoulder. "I like your thinking. I'm glad we hired you."
Thomas goes back to the table and draws the blueprints for a spinning wheel generator. Once he is done he brings them to Harold.
"This is what I came up with, sir."
Harold takes the paper and examines the drawings.
"I like it. But, how would this fit into our energy grid?"
"It won't."
"Excuse me?"
"I designed it to be small. This generator would be about the size of a car battery, but will definitely be more powerful than a 12-volt. "
"And how will this help us? If it's just the size of a car battery, won't that just end up being a toy to the people of the world?"
"It'll be portable. That's the market. The most powerful portable battery ever and it doesn't require electricity to charge it. We could make millions and billions. And, if we scale it up we could power an entire city with it."
Harold pauses and looks at Thomas.
"You know what? That's not a bad idea. Take these blueprints to the development room and they'll turn we'll turn them into reality. Good work Thomas, I'll see you here tomorrow to work on it."
Thomas takes the blueprints and heads to the development room.
Once inside the development room, he is met with an older man with long grey hair with a beard to match.
His hair also included a few braids and feathers reminiscent of the 70's.
"Hello, my name is Thomas. I have the blueprints for the new product that we will be making."
The man stares at him for a moment as Thomas hands him the blueprints.
"What is this?"
"A prototype for a portable battery, Thomas says.
"Let me see it," the old man demands.
Thomas hands him the blueprints. The old man examines them for a few seconds before tossing them back.
"I'm jealous, this is good. Let me look over it tonight and then we'll work on it in the morning."
"Thank you, sir."
"You can call me Henry. Now go home and get some sleep, you'll need it for tomorrow."
Thomas leaves the development room and heads towards the front desk.
He gets there and finds the receptionist sitting at her desk.
"Hey, I'm heading home. Can you let Harold know?"
The receptionist smiles and nods.
"Have a good night."
"Thanks," Thomas replies.
As Thomas walks towards the parking lot he stops at the front doors and looks around.
I'll have to come up with a better name for this thing than just a portable battery, he thinks.
