Three Trips of the Clock
A Flash of Light

A Flash of Light

His ears twitched, but Esper did not wake up from his deep sleep when the first two flashes of purple light occurred. On the third bright flash though, he startled from his sleep, quickly opened his eyes, and sat straight up. Then he shook his head in disbelief and blinked a few times.

He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Pulsating light was flooding the dark room then dimming to near nothing before building again in intensity. The whole room was bathed in waves of purple light. Yet, everything was strangely quiet. Esper rubbed his eyes and thought he must still be dreaming.

He lay back down on his bed and pulled the covers up around him. He hugged his pillow and squeezed his eyes shut, only to open them again in a squint a few seconds later to see if the light was still there. It was. He repeated this action several times before sitting up again and slapping himself in the face on both cheeks. WAKE UP! he thought to himself.

But nothing changed. The light keep pulsating. He squeezed his eyes shut again but could still make out the variable purple haze. I guess I’m actually awake, he thought with some disbelief. Well, there will be no more sleep for me until I can find this light source and turn it off. I’d better get up.

Esper heaved himself up with a downward-sliding cascade of bedding and lumbered out of his warm bed. He sighed, arched and stretched his whole body, then vigorously shook his head.

He started to look around the room to locate the source of the problem. He didn’t think he owned anything that could make a purple light such as he was seeing, but he looked around anyway. This light HAS to be coming from somewhere. What could it be?

Esper yawned and shook his head again, then whirled his heavy body around while looking up, down, and just about everywhere, but he was stumped. He couldn’t find the light source, although it seemed more intense near the bedroom door. He started to move towards the door but got his feet caught under him and stumbled.

“CRAP,” he exclaimed out loud, as he started to fall. He lifted his arms up and opened the palms of his hands wide to try and catch himself. He braced for the impact…This is going to hurt, he thought. But it didn’t.

Just as he thought he was about to hit the ground, Esper held his breath and shut his eyes. When nothing happened, he opened his eyes slowly and found himself lying prostrate on the bedroom floor in total darkness. No purple light?
